December 2012

Somehow not only for Christmas But all the long year through, The joy that you give to others Is the joy that comes back to you. And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad, The more of your heart's possessing Returns to make you glad. – John Greenleaf Whittier

glance at this month’s What’s On pages will show there is plenty to do this December. In fact, many people have told me they find these pages very useful, and I am grateful to those of you who email me with details of forthcoming events. The effectiveness of this was evident on 10th November when my family joined over 200 people at the Charity Concert at the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, Wisborough Green. Over £850 was raised for Cancer Research. A report of this superb concert will be in next month’s ’Tweet. I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas. Christmas / Food and drink

Your perfect Christmas Put aside others’ expectations – celebrate your way!

T

he perfect family Christmas – we’ve all seen it on the telly: adoring parents watching beautiful children open immaculately wrapped gifts, their faces full of joy and wonder. So why is it that so many festive seasons consist of weeks of frantic present-buying, culminating in arguments, tantrums and burnt sprouts? A lot of the stress of Christmas comes from our unreasonable expectations of the day. We can feel pressurised to celebrate in a way that is never going to work. Difficult as it may be, the most important thing is to think about what you really want from Christmas and to stick to it. Maybe you’d like to spend the day just with your partner, or to eat curry instead of turkey for once? If this ruffles people’s feathers, try a compromise – you could agree to do things one way this year and another the next. Say no to things you are really against, but offer an alternative. For example, you could suggest meeting up with friends or family during the quiet days between Christmas and the New Year. If you are the one who hosts the family Christmas lunch, ease the pressure by asking people to bring specific contributions, and allocate jobs beforehand. It

may seem bossy, but things will go much more smoothly if everyone knows what they are doing. On the day, designate one room as a chill-out place, where people can go to escape if they need to. And try to take a break from the sofa for a breath of fresh air. It’s easy to stagnate over Christmas and a dose of the great outdoors is good for everyone. Worrying about money is one of major causes of stress at Christmas and can spoil your enjoyment of the day. This year, why not challenge yourself to choose smaller gifts that are really special? You can look in local independent shops for unusual items, or try Christmas craft fairs and charity shops. Last year I decided to have a real budget Christmas and made food gifts for my friends and family. Ask a foodie friend, or search online if you’re stuck for recipes. (Nigella’s Chilli Jam is a good one.) Another idea is to give your time to help someone. Or you can buy pretty boxes or bags and make your own bespoke gift sets or kits. Christmas is said to be all about children, but I think for it to really work, the adults also need to have fun. So arrange some treats for yourself and make this Christmas really special – for you too! Alex Brown

Make your own ‘green’ Christmas wreath

L

ast Christmas I made an environmentally friendly Christmas wreath made from recycled materials. I thought this year I would share it with other Village Tweet readers. Collect green and red net bags from supermarket fruit punnets, cut spirally to form long pieces, long enough to tie into bows. Collect scraps of green and red fabric or ribbon, cut (with pinking shears if possible) into ribbon pieces long enough to tie into bows. Collect other sparkly ribbon, silver or gold balls

such as those from Christmas crackers or old decorations. Lastly, you will need a wire coat hanger. 1. Form coat hanger into circle with hook at top. 2. Sort fabric into green and red. 3. Tie fabric/net in alternate colours onto coat hanger in bows, pushing tightly together so coat hanger is not visible. 4. When circle is full cut into loops of bows in order to ‘froth up’ the fabric and net. 5. Tie on decorations and finish with a bow. Carolyn Gibbs

Christmas ’Elf and Safety

W

e’ve all met them – those odd souls who bound up to us on the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, informing us that there are just 358 days until next Christmas. They seem thrilled at the prospect of another season of peace and good will to all men, while we’re still recovering from the last one, grateful to have emerged unscathed. There are health warnings about any number of things, but Christmas rarely features. Yet there are all kinds of dangers lurking behind innocent looking fairy lights and seemingly innocuous novelties. A whopping 31 people have died since 1996 from watering their Christmas tree while the lights were switched on; others have suffered broken arms from pulling Christmas crackers (yes, really!); and each year a couple of people die after testing 9 volt batteries on their tongue! These facts and figures are not for the faint hearted, nor is paying a visit to Father Christmas apparently. Experts say that small children often find a trip to Santa ‘terrifying’ and that responsible adults should take appropriate action to lessen the trauma. I must admit, I do possess a photo of my daughter looking highly distraught while a white-haired, bearded stranger desperately tries to wrestle her back on to his knee. We all know the dangers of drinking and driving, but did you know that accidents have occurred involving out-of-control toy racing cars? The police warn us to stay at

home when the weather is bad, but not if there is a novice Scalextric driver on the loose! Incidents with unfamiliar toys rate in the top three causes of accidents at Christmas. When my sister and I dropped the odd Lego brick, we knew dad had found it when we heard a loud howl and saw him hopping around on one foot. Treading on broken toy parts, or being stabbed by pins left in shirts, may result in a trip to casualty. Nothing less than total vigilance is called for. Do not open beer bottles with your teeth, or leave fairy lights on unattended, nor should you use a knife as a substitute for a screwdriver, pair of scissors or tooth pick. Every year, dozens of people are admitted to Accident and Emergency departments over the Christmas period having done one, (or in some cases more than one) of these. And finally… the Food Standards Agency tells us that some ten million turkeys are sold every year at Christmas. They also tell us that 20% of all cases of food poisoning are poultry-related, so you can see there is a capacity for disaster lurking inside almost every oven in the land. How many of us check our oven temperatures using a thermometer? And how many more of us are still eating left-overs a week later. Make an oven thermometer top priority this year, and freeze left-overs or dispose of them after three days. Wherever you are this festive season, take care and have a very happy (and safe) Christmas, then exhale because it’s a full 358 days before you have to do it all again. Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Kirdford welcomes a new proprietor to the Half Moon

J

ennifer Cambell has recently taken over the Half Moon restaurant and pub in Kirdford, choosing to swap the pressures of an intensely competitive corporate environment for the relative tranquillity of rural West Sussex. Her professional experience of assisting a variety of companies to develop their businesses has inspired her to put her skills to work in more congenial surroundings, where personal service is more important than the bottom line. The Half Moon, located in a picturebook setting opposite the village’s Norman church, fulfilled all the criteria that Jennifer had set herself when she started her lengthy search for a suitable establishment. It has enabled her to create a venue worthy of the charm and character of its ancient building, set in attractive and spacious gardens both front and back. It is open every day except Monday for lunch and dinner. If you are walking in the local countryside, with or without your dog, you will be

warmly welcomed for a pub lunch or even a full meal. Just leave your Wellingtons at the door! The menu features such original dishes as Savoury Blue Cheese Bread and Butter Pudding, and a range of appetising and well-presented choices to appeal to all tastes, using locallysourced produce wherever possible such as pheasant and other wild game. The restaurant can cater for events (there is a private dining room which is free to hire and can seat up to 16 or the full restaurant can be booked out depending on numbers), and the chefs frequently create special menus for individual parties, or for annual celebrations such as Beaujolais Nouveau, Burns Night and Valentine’s Day to name a few. Jennifer insists on not being a back room proprietor – she aims for a friendly atmosphere and a high quality of personal service – so take a drive through the country lanes and try the Half Moon, Kirdford!

The Icing on the Cake with Austen’s Home Hardware

W

e have our Victorian ancestors to thank for establishing the Christmas cake as part of the traditional festive fare. Its origins lie in a Plumcake popularised in the 16th Century that was boiled, not baked, and served on Twelfth Night to celebrate the end of the Christmas season. The Victorians, however, took it upon themselves to give the Plumcake a makeover by popping it in the oven and then decorating it lavishly with icing, replacing the modest dusting of sugar that had been the decoration of choice for the Plumcake. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or enthusiastic amateur, there are a few basic items of equipment and accessories every cake decorator needs and you’ll find them all in-store at Austen's Home Hardware, Billingshurst. That means you have plenty of time to gather the tools of the trade so there’s no last-minute panic close to the big day. Countless cookbooks and websites offer advice and suggestions on how to make and apply the icing to cover your cake. If you’re going for a pristine finish then a rolling pin, a smoother and even a side

scraper are worthwhile investments, but if marzipan penguins clambering over snowdrifts are your thing, then a more informal approach can add authenticity – and may prove less of a challenge. First, you’ll need a cake board, a little bigger than the cake itself, to provide an attractive base. There’s a range of sizes and shapes in-store. A piping kit will almost certainly come in handy, if not vital, for writing a festive message on your cake. Kits come with a selection of nozzles (or icing tubes as they’re sometimes known) and a piping bag or syringe from which the icing is dispensed. These are great for adding fine detail or simply creating interesting patterns and textures to your decoration. Austen’s also stock a range of cutters to help you create uniform shapes out of rolled icing to add intricate detailing. Of course, we also stock spatulas, mixing bowls, airtight containers and a wide range of essential kitchen equipment. So visit Austen’s Home Hardware and we’ll help you all the way on the countdown to Christmas! David Lobley

A Massage is for life – not just for Christmas… but Christmas is a good start!

hristmas and birthdays are about the only time I can unashamedly play on the image that massage is a treat or indulgence usually for middle-aged women. If you have never had one before then you are surely in for a treat if someone close to you is kind enough to buy one for you. I want to convince you that a massage is so much more important than a novel improvement in the gift department but an essential part of everyday health and fitness. Massage is something we all do instinctively (e.g. rubbing an aching joint) and is probably the oldest form of medical treatment used throughout history by all cultures. In ancient Greek and Roman literature there are numerous references to the use of massage to prevent and cure diseases and to heal injuries. Julius Caesar was massaged daily to relieve neuralgia; Gladiators were massaged before and after the games. However, with the decline of the Roman Empire it would appear that massage has become less associated with medicine and more with the pursuit of pleasure. So, “What did the Romans ever do for us?” What did they know about massage that we’ve forgotten?

Well for a start we have forgotten that massage is for men too. Men benefit just as much as women from the deep relaxation effects which can reduce blood pressure and stress. Men, although less active (only joking), also benefit from the mechanical effects of massage (breaking down knots, adhesions and scar tissue in muscles, tendons and ligaments thus helping to maintain their optimum function as well as reducing pain and tension) as well as any woman. Supplying fresh oxygen and nutrient rich blood to every cell in the body and removing waste products is good for men too. So, rather than Christmas socks and jumpers, treat your man or woman to a gift which could set them on the road to the greatest gift of all – better health! As a fully qualified sports massage therapist and personal trainer with over 10 years practical experience you will be in safe hands so book your massage with me.

Sports Massage Therapy (Not just for sporty types!) “Most people work hard and spend their health trying to achieve wealth. Then they retire and spend their wealth trying to regain their health.” Don’t get caught in the trap – massage is an easy, enjoyable way to make a huge difference to your health and wellbeing right now. If you want to improve your mobility, flexibility, circulation, reduce stress and reduce risk of future injuries then book a massage with me. As a member of the International Institute of Sports Therapists (IIST) you know you will be in safe hands

Book reviews

A Good Read A Christmas selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett

S

o, it’s Christmas – time to curl up with a good book. But what to read? The newspapers are full of recommendations of which books to buy for your mum, your brother, your secondcousin-twice-removed… probably even your dog! Here are a few alternative suggestions. For Grown-Ups Want nostalgia and a lyrical description of times gone by, when ‘December was as white as Lapland though there were no reindeers’? Then dig out A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas, preferably with Edward Ardizzone’s illustrations. Short, simple and beautiful, it sums up Christmas with the Uncles, snow on the ground and the myriad delights for a small boy on the best day of the year. If, however, you are feeling slightly less full of cheer and goodwill, Jilly Cooper might be more to your taste. The Christmas scene in Appassionata is one of my favourite ever depictions of the holiday, but every December I find myself turning first to How to Survive Christmas – bleak, witty and sometimes crushingly accurate, it is Cooper’s account of how to get through a typical festive season. Another excellent book with a brief but memorable Christmas sequence, is Angels and Men by Catherine Fox. It is hard to get hold of, but I promise you, Mara’s Christmas with her grandmother is not one you will forget – and the rest of the book is beautifully written, too. Finally, from the realms of fantasy, why not try Christmas Discworld style in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett? As you might expect, this Santa is very different – for a start, those are pigs, not reindeer pulling his sleigh. And he seems a little on the bony side. What does Death have to do with

Christmas? More than you might think… For Kids For many people, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs is the Christmas classic of choice. I much prefer his Father Christmas – eloquently told by pictures and relatively few words. It follows a curmudgeonly Santa on his journey around the globe, dropping off presents, struggling down chimneys, trudging up stairs, through all kinds of weather… “Merry Bloomin’ Christmas!” Another favourite is Dear Father Christmas by Jeanne Willis and Rosie Reeve. This picture book follows Mary as she writes her Christmas letter. Her wishes are rather different, as she doesn’t need any more toys – but an everlasting hamster and self tying shoelaces would come in rather handy. Of course, there is a twist in the tale, but we certainly didn’t see it coming, and it has been read over and over again – even at the height of summer. And, if you like the Jolly Postman, then you will love The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. As you might expect, there are a range of letters to be opened, with cards, games and even a jigsaw puzzle for the lucky nursery rhyme characters on his rounds. An absolute delight. And finally… How could we look at Christmas without mentioning the two biggest Christmas classics ever? I mean of course, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore. I know you have seen a million and one adaptations of the former (The Muppets do it best!), but the book really is worth a read. Be honest, when else are you going to curl up by the fire with a Dickens novel if not during a long snowy holiday? Merry Christmas!

New guide to exploring the Wey & Arun Canal Visiting the Wey & Arun Canal is a new guidebook from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) that aims to make it easier for visitors to use the canal for leisure activities and to also find out more about the canal’s history and route. While the Canal Centre at Loxwood, and their boat cruises have helped people explore one section of the Canal, there are many other parts of the waterway that visitors have yet to discover. The launch of this publication aims to change that. Sally Schupke, WACT chairman says, “This marvellous little book is an absolute must for anybody wishing to visit

18

the Wey & Arun Canal. They will have the opportunity to see where original canal structures still stand, newly restored areas, and explore its path through Surrey and Sussex countryside.” The 72-page guide includes colour photographs of the canal, as well as maps and details of how to access parts of the canal by road and by public transport. Priced at £5, the guidebook can be bought from the Loxwood Canal Centre (behind the Onslow Arms, on the B2133), opening hours 12-3pm Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends or by mail order (plus £1.50 P&P) from the WACT office, The Granary, Flitchfold Farm, Loxwood, RH14 0RH. Community / Christmas

BilliMarket A Community Market by the Community for the Community

T

he newly created BilliMarket community market aims to bring together a range of local talent and to provide them a regular place to sell each month. The markets are held at Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre in Roman Way. The first market last month was a huge success with many sellers signing up until the end of 2013 for a monthly slot. The majority of sellers are local but several have travelled from Redhill, Dorking, Chichester and Worthing. Many visitors commented BilliMarket was just what Billingshurst needed. There will be over 20 sellers each month selling a vast range of gifts and products; each has their own niche. Stalls include retro cupcake makers, household products, jewellery, specialised fused glass gifts, wooden toys, delicious homemade chutneys and heart warming pastries perfect for those cold days ahead. There is an embroiderer who sells photo albums and notebooks covered in handmade fabrics in the richest warmest autumn colours ideal as a unique and totally original gift for Christmas.

From January the markets will take place on the last Thursday of each month from 1pm until 4pm but this month there will be an opportunity to buy a variety of unique and special Christmas gifts on Thursday 13th December from 1pm until 5pm. The market has been extended that day to accommodate the late shopper. Sellers interested in a stall should contact Claire Golding or Bik-Kay Talbot on 07546 210189 or email billimarket@gmail.com. “We are delighted with the success of BilliMarket and hope the market will grow from strength to strength within the local community. The market has a wonderful community vibe and we are delighted that Billingshurst Primary School Community Association are getting involved with BilliMarket and will be selling the school’s Christmas cards, Eco bag, recipe book and other creative ideas from the children. We can’t wait to see what the children come up with each month!” comment Claire Golding and Bik-Kay Talbot, founders of BilliMarket. Bik-Kay Talbot & Claire Golding

Extensions and Dimensions

W

ith most families choosing to stay at their existing home rather than moving, extending your home offers a way to reconfigure your existing living space in a way which will work for you. Home improvements are also a reliable way of adding value to your property. Whilst it is likely there are some significant changes coming within the Planning system that will affect what you are able to achieve with or without Planning Permission it is important not to think in these terms. Simply adding rooms to the back, side or roof of your home can have a detrimental effect on your property and how you use it. The way in which people live has drastically evolved over the last few decades. However, different people still prioritise spaces differently to others depending on their individual lifestyle. For example, you may use your kitchen as the hub of your home or you may want your living spaces to have a direct relationship with your garden. You may be looking to create a home office, increase your entertainment or living spaces or add new bedrooms or wings. In any case working out what you ultimately want should be your first priority. Whether you have a traditional Sussex Vernacular building, or even a Listed building, you

may choose to be sympathetic to the existing design right down to the methods used, or starkly contrast the design in order to differentiate between the old and new. In between are countless opportunities that can vary in degree, ambition and design. An extension can mean adding a simple but elegant space with a character of its own or it can be part of a larger remodel where the new structure inspires the interior renovation or vice versa. To some, bringing more light into the existing internal spaces can be more important than creating new space itself. Of course, there are practical issues such as how not to deprive yourselves and your neighbours of a sense of privacy, how the extension relates to the structure of your existing home, and how to keep the costs in order. The planning process itself is not as onerous as some people may think and with the right guidance you should be able to achieve your goals. Whether or not you are involved in the construction industry already, there are a range of different professionals who can tailor their services to your needs and will, importantly, save you money in the long term. GOING, GOING, GONE GREEN!

ake One Productions, Horsham-based video and digital media company have really gone green in every sense of the word! Their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Sussex Green Living (SGL), won the Going Green Award at the Business Matters Awards in July and in September they receiving Highly Commended for Going Green at the Southern Business Awards. Carrie Cort, one of the directors, explains why SGL was set up, “We work with companies large and small in all sectors. However, we have done a lot of work in the educational and environmental sectors. The current economic climate has made everyone tighten their belts and reflect on the future. It made us realise we wanted more social purpose”. The directors at Take One all have young families and a growing concern for their futures, with constant reminders from the media about climate change and the need to live more sustainably, the team decided to take positive steps. MD Nick Webber explained, “Our children were our inspiration and incentive to set up SGL

and to do more for their future lives on planet earth”. SGL is a green children’s club and website providing tips and information about how people can live more sustainably, it has a Kids Zone, Adult Zone, Recycling Zone and much more. Carrie says, “We need to all change our attitude to the resources we are constantly taking out of the planet. For example, plastics made of petroleum which takes some 3 billion years to form – we use the plastic, throw it into the landfill and then it takes between 3001,000 years to biodegrade. This doesn’t make sense. Lets all change our attitude – there is no such thing as rubbish, just waste resources in the wrong place!” The team have set up recycling schemes diverting waste resources from landfill, recycling them into new products for the financial benefit of William Penn Primary School, Sussex Wildlife Trust, WAKOOS Centre4Children and the Philippine Community Fund. Deck the halls

n abundance of cut-foil decorations, thin wispy tinsel and multicoloured fairy lights are my earliest recollection of Christmas decorations, where the lounge was proudly decorated like a pub (you can tell I was an 80’s child!). My brother and I would drag a dining room chair into the lounge for our father to stand on (a time before health and safety was an issue), and he’d hang the same dusty decorations we’d bring down from the fusty loft every year. He’d insist that “we must use the same holes as last year” as he pushed the drawing pins through the Artex ceiling. To be fair to my parents, by the 1990’s Mum tried to modernise the decorations, opting for a more muted colour pallet of red green and white. As kids we hated the idea of such radical change, but alas the foil decs were relegated to our bedrooms. Although I hold these memories dear, I wouldn’t have this kind of decoration anywhere near my minimalist abode, and much prefer real ‘trimmings’ wherever possible. I don’t think there’s anything more special than a family day out collecting pine cones and seed heads, then returning to the garden to cut long lengths of Ivy to wrap around the spindles on the staircase while humming ‘Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly’ (words from 1881). The word ‘deck’ in the title is of course referring to the verb meaning ‘adorn’ and entered the language from the Dutch word ‘dekken’, meaning ‘to cover’ (although you’d be forgiven for thinking it sounds like a piece of furniture from Ikea!). Both holly and ivy will last a week or so without

water when cut and brought into the house (longer still if its cooler), but other foliage will require some moisture. The easiest way to make your own table decoration is to take an old 6 inch terracotta pot and squash a wetted piece of green oasis inside. Place a church candle centrally and add in cut pieces of holly, ivy and other evergreen leaves, as well as berries such as holly and Cotoneaster. You can even add in pine cones (scented with a few drops of festive scented oil) or push in a couple of cinnamon sticks. Do make sure you place it on a level saucer or similar, keep it moist and don’t let the candle burn too low (remembering never to leave a lit candle unattended!). Festive jobs to do this month: Use excess trimmings from the Christmas tree to make a wreath Plant up a colourful festive pot for outside your front door, and why not add some battery operated lights Ensure your Poinsettia is placed out of cold draughts Oh, and don’t forget to make a gardening Christmas wish list for Father Christmas!

Winter Survival

W

inter is a time most horse owners dread! Short daylight hours and increased workload as horses are stabled for longer due to the cold, wet days. The possibility of ice and snow and limited turnout due to rutted, frozen paddocks is part and parcel of horsey life. Here are a few tips to help horse and rider through the long months ahead! Helping the horse: Mud fever is a common winter problem; bacteria enter the skin through minute abrasions and set up an infection. Horses affected will have scabs and sore, cracked skin – most likely on the lower leg but it can occur on other areas of the body as well. Mild cases can be treated by the owner by washing the legs, removing scabs and then thoroughly drying the legs after wards and leaving the horse on a deep, clean bed and using a barrier liquid or cream before turning out. More severe cases will need antibiotic treatment from a vet. Rain scald is another skin condition caused by bacteria thriving in wet conditions. Affected horses will have scabs forming under the hair on their back, neck and withers, often accompanied by a serum. Affected horses need to be kept clean and dry and have access to shelter and a good waterproof turnout rug. Rain scald treatment is similar to that of mud fever and severe cases should be attended by a vet. Coughs. Some horses are sensitive to dust and this is exacerbated when stabled for long periods in the winter, feeding dry hay can challenge the respiratory system. Look to using dust extracted bedding; there are plenty to choose from and either steam or soak hay or use haylage to minimise challenge to the respiratory system, stable hygiene is also of great importance, do not let ammonia build up in the bedding and keep surfaces free from dust. Limited turnout. Some yards have limited turnout over the winter, especially those on clay soils which become boggy very quickly. If your horse has to spend lots of time in the box make sure he has plenty to keep occupied with. There are many stable toys on the market: treat balls that dispense pony nuts and boredom breaking licks are very popular, you can put carrots in the hay net and apples in his water bucket as well as hanging a swede to keep your equine friend from getting bored!

34

Rugging. Apart from some of our very hardy native ponies most horses will benefit from some sort of rug during the winter months. Rugs are available in a huge range of different fits, weights and styles and it is often trial and error as to what works best for your horse! Invest in as high a quality of rug as you can. Rugs must be removed daily and the horse given a good groom and checked for any rubs that may be caused by the rug. Keep rugs in good order of repair and check buckles and surcingles periodically for signs of wear and tear. Rider: Head Torch. This wonderful invention allows you to have both hands free so you can get on with the job to hand – in fact you can use the precious daylight hours to ride and poo-pick in the dark! Waterproof trousers are a must too; many types allow you to ride in them, keeping your legs warm and dry! They are also great for popping on over you office clothes so you don’t smell of horses when you get to work! And… Keep some road salt to hand for putting down on the yard when the weather is icy, much safer for humans and horses! Lag all water pipes as much as possible. This will help prevent burst pipes as well as keeping the water flowing. Putting a football in water troughs can also help prevent the water freezing solid. Keep a few filled water containers in an accessible and well insulated place – wrapping them with old stable rugs works a treat! If the taps are frozen then you will have water ready to fill buckets with. Let’s hope this winter is kind to us. We have Christmas to look forward to and after that has been and gone the evenings will start to ry lengthen, slightly at first and then by the end le d of February we are on our way towards d y, sa ha spring. It’s that time of year again! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

A

s you get older do you find that you reflect ever more on events and times long gone? I do. For some reason I measure the passing of the years more by the passage of winters than by any birthday celebration. Perhaps as a farmer the long winter nights and the quietness that descends on the land at this time of year gives me more time to dwell on the seasons that have passed. I consider myself fortunate to have been born during the later part of the Second World War and as such to have witnessed a dramatic and wonderful change in the world around me. However, there are memories from those days of my childhood that still lift my spirit at their recalling and make me a little sad at their loss. For instance… Wool. Long before synthetic materials that drip dry and need no ironing. Hours spent with arms outstretched holding that skein of wool so that Gran could roll it into a ball. Peering through the dim light of a gas lamp that spluttered on the wall, as she unpicked yet another sweater to recycle the material into a pair of socks or mittens. The mangle in the yard on a Monday, tin bath in front of the fire on a Saturday, bed time in the Morrison shelter – the Anderson in the garden was always full of water; my Gran always said it was only fit to grow mushrooms in… even when a couple of houses down our road were reduced to rubble. Collecting coal on the soapbox cart from the shunting yard, balloons and goldfish from the rag-and-bone man. Milk and bread delivered by a cart that was pulled by a horse who knew the round better than the driver, who, at the end of the day, would sit in his seat and ‘do’ his books while the horse made its own way home. When the snows came it was snowball fights and slides, the latter carefully groomed to huge lengths and guarded by a boot inspector to check that nobody with Blakeys in their soles was allowed on it as they would

cut the smooth surface to ribbons. The long winter of 1948 was recalled with horror by adults and loved by us children. The Sunday school outing on double-decker buses to the coast for a day by the sea. Stuffing sand down the insides of our knitted swimming costumes to see who could hold the most and then standing in the shallows so that it leaked slowly back into the lapping water. Walking back up the beach with the crutches down around our kneecaps from the stretched wool, and small rivulets of blue dye, looking like premature varicose veins, running decoratively down our legs. Saturday morning cinema: sixpence to get in, a great singsong, then cartoons, a serial and finally a Western or similar which we would emulate by shooting at each other all the way home afterwards. Liquorice Wood, lemonade, sherbet powder, aniseed balls, gob stoppers and palm toffee bars. That accumulator powered radio on the sideboard, Rays a Laugh, Educating Archie, In Town Tonight, Dick Barton Special Agent, Workers’ Playtime, ITMA, Wilfred Pickles with Violet Carson at the piano (Later to become Ena Sharples in Corrie) and on and on… The band playing on the stand in the park and Gran sitting in her deckchair, eyes closed and pink bloomers on display. Red buses that had open doorways where you could hang on to the upright pole and dare each other to jump off before the bus stopped. Bus tickets dispensed from a wooden clipboard that the conductress held and snipped with her little machine strapped to her waist. Fag cards, cardboard milk bottle tops (useful for making pom-poms ), French knitting with an old cotton reel, marbles in the gutter, catapults, fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, Liptons, Home and Colonial, MacFisheries, Lyons corner shops, Woolworths when it had a myriad of individual counters, each one manned by its own assistant. Do you remember them all? You do? Then I guess you’re as old and decrepit as me then. Still, Happy Christmas. John Nash

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder

I

t is starting to become peaceful at Tedfold. The Billingshurst fireworks are over for another year thank goodness; they are held extremely close to the farm and cause much distress to the livestock especially the horses. We have held our last pig course in 2012 and then we sort of hibernate for the worst of the winter! Our son, Oliver, has made use of this extra time to teach a pen of fattening weaners to sit on command – always useful(!) but he probably now Ollie teaching the won’t eat them now. The rain is causing us problems for the pigs with a thick mud of Velcro soup in some of the pens, so we have ordered yet more arks to be able to create new pens. Excitingly we are now pig exporters and sold a Middle White sow to a smallholding in France – or should that be La Petite Ferme. Time was against us as she is pregnant and you cannot export in the last 10% of gestation. However, the AHVLA export centre and our vet were

exceedingly efficient and after a 4.30am start she arrived safely with a few days to spare. We have one gilt left to farrow before Christmas and have confirmed a few sows pregnant to give birth in January, ready for the 2013 show circuit and the spring weaner market. We selected some lambs to send off for our Christmas customers (and the lovely Harry Sherrard who cut our hay for us in exchange for pigs to sit! some meat – thank you Harry) which, after maturing, will be delivered to freezers around West Sussex. The chickens are laying one egg a fortnight – lucky we don’t rely on them to pay the mortgage! The WSSC has a reshuffled committee with a new activities manager ‘Mossy’ who will organise additional trips and activities for club members and we have our 2012 Christmas social on the 12th December at Brinsbury so come along and meet us all. Computing and IT / Tuition

How to get online using your mobile phone More sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas

T

here are many reasons why you might want to use mobile phone technology to get online and the chances are you may even have a device that lets you do so. It’s important to feel confident and comfortable about mobile internet so that you don’t end up with an unexpectedly large bill at the end of the month. The costs that you run up will vary depending on whether you are using the mobile web with a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Once you understand the difference you’ll be in a better position to manage how much you spend. All smartphones come with 3G connectivity. Put very simply, 3G is your phone’s own internet connection. Another option is to use Wi-Fi, which works the same way that a wireless connection works in your home or office. When your mobile connectivity is switched to Wi-Fi mode you are asking the device to find an outside source to provide an internet connection, instead of using the phone’s 3G connectivity. When using the Wi-Fi connection the service is usually free of charge (if you have to pay this will be made clear before you can use it).

When using a 3G connection your use will be limited to an amount that you’ve agreed with your provider; if you exceed the limit you’ll be charged extra. So it’s best to use Wi-Fi where you can. So how do you switch on online services on your phone? In the settings menu you can select Wi-Fi if you are in an area where a Wi-Fi signal is strong, or you can choose to turn it off. By deselecting Wi-Fi, you are telling the device to use its own 3G internet connection. It is common for Wi-Fi access to be guarded by a password. When you select Wi-Fi your smartphone will be shown a series of ‘hotspots’. Each will have a padlock icon beside them but some will be unlocked while others are locked. The unlocked options are public and can be connected to without having to enter a password. In some cases a connection may appear unlocked but then prompt you to log on using a paid for service. You will usually be asked for your bank details in order to set up an account. Whether you have selected 3G or Wi-Fi, you can then browse the internet by tapping on the internet browser icon on your devices screen. Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk)

“The Care Comfort Company team have made a world of difference to my mother’s life and therefore to the rest of the family. They are truly committed to what they do, and my mother receives kind, compassionate care from the same one or two carers every day of the week. They are extremely thoughtful, helpful and very good at communicating with the family to ensure that my mother has everything she needs to enhance her comfort and peace of mind. They are definitely not your average care provider. I’m so glad we found them; they are something special and I thoroughly recommend them.” Mandy Sinclair
