HISTORY

T

he birth of each of Cheyenne County’s towns – Sidney, Lodgepole, Dalton, Gurley and Potter – can be traced back to Abraham Lincoln’s Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 which brought the Union Pacific Railroad to the area. As the transcontinental railroad was developed, military forts and work and depot stations were built in the surrounding areas, marking the very beginnings of Cheyenne County’s towns. Sidney saw significant growth during the Gold Rush as thousands of miners rushed west along the Sidney-Deadwood Trail. Saloons, theaters, brothels and boarding houses popped up to entertain the constant stream of people traveling through town. If the early railroad years represent Cheyenne County’s youth, this era can be thought of as Sidney’s rebellious teenage years which earned the area the nickname “Sinful Sidney.” As the Gold Rush settled down and Cheyenne County matured, it became known more for its agriculture than its lawlessness. Farmers and ranchers replaced railroad workers and miners and Sidney became the center of the cattle industry. In 1942, at the beginning of World War II, Sidney became the site for the Sioux Ordinance Depot, the second time in its history that Sidney acted as a military post. The post brought another rush of people and industry to Cheyenne County until the post was closed in 1967. By the mid-20th Century, oil and natural gas became the newest resources drawing folks to southern Nebraska. To this day, Cheyenne County is still the second-leading producer of oil and natural gas in Nebraska and is home to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. Though Cheyenne County has experienced some setbacks along the way with periods of drought, the Depression and other economic setbacks, it has constantly come back to thrive again.

Gurley, Lodgepole, Dalton and Potter make up the smaller, more agricultural areas of Cheyenne County. With populations of three to four hundred each, these communities are examples of the best of small-town America; quiet communities where everyone knows their neighbors and life is safe and peaceful. Sidney, the center of Cheyenne County, is somewhat bigger but still maintains that hometown feel. Sidney’s unbeatable mix of a quiet, rural lifestyle and strong economy make it a fantastic place to live, work and play. In fact, it has been named one of the “Top 100 Rural Communities in America” by national economist Jack Schultz.

RECREATIO

T

he Cheyenne County Community Center has been the heart of recreation in Cheyenne County since 1992. For those new to the area, the Chamber of Commerce provides a Newcomers Packet that includes a free pass to the community center – a great way to check out the center before deciding on a membership. The Community Center offers youth and adult sports; a fitness center, personal training and fitness classes; senior activities and events; youth camps; memorial gardens; facility rentals; special events; and much, much more. The Community Center is an excellent way to be involved in the community while staying active and having fun. Golfers love to hit the green at Hillside Golf Course in Sidney or Prairie Pines Golf Course in Potter. These scenic courses with beautiful views of Nebraska’s luscious landscape make for a wonderfully serene day of golf. Hillside Golf Course was even featured in Nebraska Life magazine as “the best” golf in Nebraska.

For a great day of family recreation, you just can’t beat Cheyenne County’s parks. Visit Sidney’s Legion Park for swimming, fishing, skating, baseball, tennis and access to the historic Sidney-Deadwood Trail. Or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, check out Sidney Shooting Park. Lodgepole’s North and South Parks provide playground equipment, tennis, basketball, baseball, horseshoes and picnic tables.

TOURISM

I

t all began here, and Sidney is still the headquarters for one of Cheyenne County’s most popular destinations, Cabela’s Wildlife Display and retail store. Cabela’s is “The World’s Foremost Outfitter” for outdoor gear and is a favorite among hunters, fishermen and campers. The Wildlife Display is a free exhibit within Cabela’s that features more than 500 replicas of local and exotic wildlife. Cheyenne County’s rich history makes for excellent local attractions that are both entertaining and educational. Visit Lodgepole’s Depot Museum on the weekends for museum displays of antique irons, bells, furniture and machinery, horse buggies, historic clothing and more all located within former Union Pacific Railroad depot. The Fort Sidney Complex in Sidney is another great way for visitors to immerse themselves in local history. Open the day after Memorial Day through Labor Day, the complex houses the Cheyenne County Museum and features the powder house, married officer’s quarters and Post Commander’s Home. If you are visiting in

the winter, don’t miss the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration. To learn more about the area’s rich history, be sure to visit museums located in Dalton and Potter. Its vast heritage and lots of artifacts are on display at these locations. Along with its playgrounds, fishing and other recreational activities, Legion Park in Sidney also features the Living Memorial Gardens and War Memorial. The Gardens are a beautiful monument to Sidney’s role in American History. The space dedicated to the gardens is a recycled municipal swimming pool from the 1940s. The War Memorial honors Cheyenne County’s veterans with the largest flag in Nebraska and brass plates memorializing wars and their veterans. After a full day of sightseeing, be sure to top everything off with an ice cream treat at the Potter Sundry, home of the “tin roof” sundae, where they still use an old-fashioned soda fountain. Another highlight in Cheyenne County’s industrial development is the Sioux Meadows Industrial Park, just 10 miles northwest of Sidney on the I-80 corridor. In the past, this area has served as the Sioux Army Depot and later the Sidney Vocational Technical School and Western Nebraska Community College. Today, the park houses more than 100,000 square feet of commercial space used for housing, office space and warehousing with easy access to the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern rail lines. For more information about the park, visit www.siouxmeadowspark.com. For residents looking to create lucrative business connections, learn more about their community and its economy and improve upon their leadership skills, the Chamber of Commerce offers the Leadership Cheyenne County program. This 10-month program consists of eight learning days that focus on different aspects of the county, volunteer projects to better Cheyenne County, leadership skill development and much more.
