he communities of Oak Forest and Crestwood are on the fast track to becoming two of the finest suburbs in southwest Cook County. History
O
ak Forest and Crestwood share a similar heritage, with histories stretching back to the early 19th century. Around this time, the region was speckled with farms and new towns began springing up with the coming of the railroad. Many of Oak Forest (originally known as Cooper’s Grove) and current-day Crestwood’s earliest settlers traveled from Germany to take advantage of the region’s high quality land – as many of these settlers were farmers. By the early 20th century, the area began experiencing much in the way of residential development. The Midlothian Country Club was established, and in 1927, residents living around the country club incorporated as the village of Midlothian. A small population just north also chose to incorporate as a village – and thus, in 1928, the village of Crestwood was born.

In 1947, Oak Forest incorporated as a village. Between 1950 and 1970, both Oak Forest and Crestwood’s population doubled. More subdivisions, the Oak Forest Hospital, a new high school district and many other new conveniences were all significant products of this era. Additionally, road improvement projects were set in place throughout the area, and the muchanticipated Interstate 80 opened the area to further development. In 1971, the village of Oak Forest was officially incorporated as a city. As 2000 approached, the mass exodus into many southern suburbs gradually decreased—but not here. Oak Forest and Crestwood continue to grow and develop, as many young families are establishing households here. The area attracts new residents and businesses for the same reasons that it had originally been sought out – its natural beauty, ideal location, the availability of affordable real estate and, most importantly, its valued residents.
Location & Transportation
O
ak Forest and Crestwood are situated just over 20 miles from the Loop, in southwest Cook County. The region’s wide range of transportation options provides residents and business owners with easy access to both the excitement of downtown Chicago and the relaxation of the suburbs. Commuters and shoppers alike can take advantage of 24/7 access to downtown Chicago and all points inbetween on the Metra trains that depart regularly from the Oak Forest commuter station at 159th & Cicero Avenue. The station is served by four commuter parking lots with more than 1,000 parking spaces.
The Pace bus system also shuttles commuters to and from the station and other destinations with convenient morning, afternoon and evening routes.

Those who prefer to drive to their destinations will enjoy the convenience of several nearby interstates, including I-57, I-80 and I-294. Oak Forest and Crestwood are also served by U.S. Route 6 and State Routes 43 (Harlem Avenue) 50 (Cicero Avenue) and 83. And for those needing to reach regional, national or international destinations quickly, the area is only 20-25 minutes from Chicago Midway International Airport and 45-50 minutes from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Community Events
R
esidents and visitors to the area delight in the array of exciting events held in the Oak Forest-Crestwood community. The Oak ForestCrestwood Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Oak Forest, hosts the Annual Oak Forest Fleadh (pronounced flah) every year in March. The Fleadh – Gaelic for festival – includes customer appreciation celebrations, a 5K competitive run, an open bike ride, a family parade and Pub and Restaurant Open House. This event will take place on Cicero Avenue between 151st and 159th Street. The Oak Forest Fleadh showcases the spirit of our community, promotes our local businesses and brings many new people to our area. Over the Memorial Day weekend, make a stop at Oak Forest’s Chicago Gaelic Park for the annual Irish Fest. This exciting event features a variety of entertainment, including Irish music, theatrical performances, cultural workshops, contests and a full carnival, plus plenty of food and beverages. Each year, a portion of the proceeds is donated to a worthy cause. The Oak Fest Commission hosts the Annual Oak Fest over the 4th of July
holiday. Oak Fest is a not-for-profit organization whose sole purpose is to raise money for Oak Forest groups and to highlight its businesses. Each year the annual festival centers around the July 4th holiday featuring local musical acts nightly as well as a carnival, food and drink, a car show, a 5K run, games and activities. The event also offers the best fireworks show in Chicagoland on the 4th of July. And as always, admission is free! Crestwood Fest is a further summertime favorite in the area. Held in August at Caesar Park, the fest offers guests main stage entertainment, arts & crafts vendors, an assortment of children’s activities, food, a car and bike show and fireworks. Admission to Crestwood Fest is free. Crestwood also hosts the exciting Windy City ThunderBolts, a professional minor league baseball team. Fans of the Great American Pastime pile into Standard Bank Stadium to cheer on their ‘Bolts at nearly 50 home games during the team’s MaySeptember season. A variety of promotions are held in conjunction with the home games including: 2-for-1 Tuesdays; $1.00 hot dog and soda Wednesdays; fireworks on Saturdays; and various themed nights.

Healthcare
I
n addition to the quality healthcare provided through area physicians, dentists, chiropractors and other healthcare specialists, area residents have access to the highly rated Oak Forest Hospital, part of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. Located on a 340-acre campus at 15900 S. Cicero Avenue, Oak Forest Hospital is a more than 600-bed facility supplying excellent services in the areas of

rehabilitation, chronic disease, acute care, subacute care, skilled nursing care and
long-term intermediate/supportive care. It has been praised for its innovations and continues to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the community through the addition of new medical programs. In recent times, programs in oncology, maternal fetal medicine, pain management, wound care and others have been incorporated into the hospital’s directory of services. As a specialty hospital, Oak Forest complements the tertiary care services of the modern John Stroger, Jr. Hospital and the community services of Provident Hospital. It is also closely affiliated with three suburban clinics operated by the Ambulatory and Community Health Network.
Further hospitals providing health services in the area include Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights and MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island.
