ROLE OF THE CHAMBER
T
he Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce plays a significant role in the community. As an advocacy group, the Chamber is financed entirely by member investments. It provides opportunities for members to stay connected, network, advertise, receive continuing education and support and give back to the community. The Chamber is governed by a Board of Directors who guide the policy making. A staff of three people facilitates daily operations and activities. The Hobe Sound Chamber is lucky enough to have the support of dedicated volunteers who assist by helping to coordinate events, acting as receptionists and managing the lobby visitor center. The Hobe Sound Chamber would not exist as it does today without the devoted commitment of its volunteers.

The Hobe Sound Chamber is proud to provide thousands of referrals a year, driving business to our members in turn making membership investment priceless. The user-friendly website, www. hobesound.org, showcases member profiles, maps, coupons and additional information in its Business Directory, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The website contains a community calendar, local news section, visitor and relocation information and opportunities for advertising. Our lobby visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and displays several brochures, pamphlets and coupons that help residents and visitors alike as they plan vacations, family activities or learn about local businesses that can meet their every day needs. The Hobe Sound Christmas Parade and Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts are signature special events that contribute greatly to the local economy. These events not only draw an influx of visitors to the area giving an increased amount of exposure to businesses; but they also

encourage commerce, showcase the special small-town charm of Hobe Sound and build a sense of community pride. Additionally, the Chamber hosts a golf tournament in May and a progressive dinner party in October. These events provide entertainment opportunities for Chamber and community members. Each month the Chamber organizes a number of networking functions for members, giving them the opportunity to make new connections and learn about local issues effecting business. These events have proven to be quite effective for making key business contacts and for leadership development. There are also numerous opportunities for members to serve through committee roles and service projects. The Hobe Sound Chamber also publishes a quarterly printed newspaper and a weekly e-newsletter keeping the community informed about Chamber and community events and news. Widely distributed in the area, The Pelican newspaper provides affordable advertising opportunities to its members. obe Sound is an unincorporated village within Martin County. Because it is unincorporated, it does not have its own mayor or town hall. Instead, it is governed by the Martin County Board of Commissioners. The Board of County Commissioners is made up of five members, each with their own district within Martin County. Hobe Sound falls under District 3. Commissioners are elected by voters in the county, and those elected serve a four-year term. The Board of County Commissioners acts as the main, local governing body for Martin County. As such, it is responsible for providing local laws and programs, disaster and emergency services, construction and maintenance of infrastructure and other governmental services. All meetings of the Board of County Commissioners are open to the public, and citizens are encouraged to attend. Meeting schedules, agendas and minutes are available online at www.martin.fl.us.

Along with the Martin County Board of Commissioners, the Hobe Sound Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) oversees issues of community redevelopment within the Hobe Sound Redevelopment Area. This committee is made up of volunteers chosen by the board of commissioners. Volunteers must live or operate a business in Hobe Sound in order to be considered for a seat on the committee. HOBE SOUND COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AREA A Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is a public entity that finances redevelopment within focused areas. These areas tend to be older neighborhoods

where there is a need to reverse deterioration, create jobs, revitalize the business climate, increase property values and encourage active participation and investment by citizens. Plans to enhance Bridge Road between US-1 and Dixie Highway officially began in 2000 with the establishment of the Hobe Sound Community Redevelopment Plan. Precursor goals for the corridor were identified as early as 1994. Bridge Road was highlighted as the No. 1 focus area in the 2010 NOW Visioning community report. The vision for Bridge Road is that of a sustainable neighborhood “Main Street� setting that will support a vibrant downtown for all. Objectives of the Bridge Road project include increasing the amount of on-street parking, improving vehicular and pedestrian safety, undergrounding overhead utilities, improving drainage, reducing speeds, and promoting walkability through sidewalk additions and landscape enhancements. County staff has worked closely with the Hobe Sound Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) and the community on the corridor design since early 2011. Participation by the NAC, residents, business owners and property owners ensures the design will meet the individual needs of each business along the corridor and align with the vision as outlined in the

Hobe Sound Redevelopment Plan. Engineering drawings are nearly complete, accounting for the needs of the property owners and businesses along Bridge Road. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners previously approved the acceptance of any right of way needed to complete the project. Staff will be coordinating with property owners and Martin County’s Property Management department to accept additional right of way needed to make the project a reality. A component of Phase I of the project, the A1A Service Road, is currently under construction and a second component is in final design. The Board of County Commissioners has recently directed staff to move the project forward and will be considering funding options to construct the project.

obe Sound has a small-town feel while offering breathtaking natural amenities. It is home to gorgeous beaches, an awardwinning state park that welcomes visitors with a wide array of activities, and worldfamous golf courses. Top-rated schools serve students here, as well. When it comes to beaches, Hobe Sound has a lot to offer. It was recently dubbed the “best beach town housing market” in
the country, according to RealtyTrac, a real estate data company in California. It earned the accolade based on its low crime rate, ideal weather and affordable housing market. Neighboring city, Stuart, was named Happiest Seaside Town of 2016 by Coastal Living Magazine. boating, surfing and snorkeling, as main attractions. Another big draw for Stuart is the Riverwalk, a scenic respite that hosts free weekly concerts. Hobe Sound has a quaint, relaxed vibe, thanks in part to its history, which dates all the way back to the late 1600s. The area was discovered when a British merchant ship sank off the coast near the Jupiter Inlet, where the crew had to abandon ship on shore. There they met two local Native American tribes, which would eventually influence the naming of the town. Hobe Sound is an adaptation of the Jove/Jobe Indians name. As the town evolved, it became known as “Picture City” in the 1920s when the

Olympia Improvement Corporation bought a huge tract of land and billed it to be a mini-Hollywood. The project was billed to be a Greek-style motion picture studio and planned housing development. But a devastating hurricane in 1928 halted the project, and the village ended up reverting to its original name. Today, there is little evidence of the plans except for several Greek and Roman street names and a few cement lamp posts that still dot Dixie Highway. But Hobe Sound still has plenty to give it distinction. It is immersed in natural beauty: Jonathan Dickinson State Park is to the west; Blowing Rocks Preserve is to the south; and the National Wildlife Refuge and Jupiter Island are to the east.

Martin County consistently ranks among the state’s top-performing districts, and has been officially recognized as an Academically High-Performing District in Florida. The area’s youngest learners have the option to start out at the Hobe Sound Early Learning Center, which is a private, nonprofit school that helps students from ages 1 to 5 with their social and emotional development. The early learning center provides a foundation of kindergarten readiness skills in reading, math, art, music and more. Founded in 1962, it currently enrolls 140 children in full-day programs. In addition to the above-mentioned Hobe Sound Elementary, there’s also SeaWind, which is dedicated to sustaining an atmosphere of care, respect, responsibility, and a love of learning.

obe Sound is the gateway to the Treasure Coast. There is a wide variety of performance art available for those who enjoy theater entertainment. Locally, guests can visit the Barn and Lyric Theaters in Stuart or the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter. Visitors can also enjoy a concert, show or play at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts or Cruzan Amphitheatre, both located about 30 minutes to the south in West Palm Beach. Hobe sound is also home to numerous talented artists and art galleries. A few of the local galleries include the Hobe Sound Fine Arts League, Hobe Sound Art Gallery, Lighthouse Center for the Arts, Jupiter Island Art Council & Town Hall, the Framery and the H. Allen Holmes showroom off of Bridge Road. Many of these locations offer classes, workshops, summer camps and art fairs for all local and visiting art-lovers to enjoy.
Outside of the art galleries there is still plenty of stunning visual art to enjoy. In 2009, local artist Nadia Utto began the Hobe Sound Mural Project. The project’s goal is to honor past history, and present vitality and future promise while creating an outdoor gallery of beautiful walls.

With the help of more than two dozen local artists, there are now 21 beautiful murals with plans to continue adding more. These murals are located throughout the town on the outside of walls of various buildings in Banner Lake Park and along Federal Highway, Bridge Road and Dixie Highway. These murals depict gorgeous beach scenes, kooky underwater seascapes, sunrises, recycling themes and more. Visitors can tour these murals on foot, bike or by driving tour.

ATTRACTIONS There is an endless list of fun activities that will keep Hobe Sound’s residents and visitors busy and entertained. Aside from the museums, galleries, theaters, parks, and beaches, there is still more fun to be had. Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts The Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts occurs every year on the first weekend in February. Parking and admission are free to the public. Festival-goers can enjoy lifesize sculptures, spectacular paintings, oneof-a-kind jewels, photography, ceramics, a local green market and much more. The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce partners with Howard Alan Events to bring the Festival of the Arts to Hobe Sound each year and in 2018 we will celebrate the 17th year of this fun, family festival. With 150 artists participating, including a children’s poster art contest, this weekend event adds incredible value to our community by showcasing our downtown. This festival also gives local businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Chamber volunteers greet each attendee and collect donations used for Chamber small business programs, as well as scholarships to local high school seniors. Known for its pristine public beaches and unblemished parks, this area beckons outdoor enthusiasts as the perfect picturesque getaway, either for memorable day trips or even longer stretches. Straight out of a postcard, it is located along the Atlantic coast between Jupiter and Stuart. It is also home to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, where visitors can observe a myriad of wildlife.
