Letter from the Dear Readers,

The weather is beautiful, the sky is blue and the rocks are red. Are you ready for some adventure?

I am always amazed when we compile our adventure issue just how much there is to do within a few miles of where we live. It is the perfect time for getting outside to hike, bike, or play in the water. There are breathtaking views at every turn. I feel blessed to live in an area that has so much to offer.

There are so many great events taking place that it is almost impossible to choose which ones you will attend. Please see our calendar at the end of this issue to check out some of those amazing events.

If you are not feeling so adventurous, you’re still in luck. You can just sit back, relax, and breathe in all of the beauty that surrounds you. As the evenings get longer you can enjoy family outings or just some solitude in our great outdoors.

Since we combined View on Mesquite with View on Southern Utah into one magazine at the beginning of the year, we hope that you are enjoying our broader coverage. We have heard from many readers and advertisers that you are, and that you enjoy finding out what is going on all around us.

A

s summer approaches, I sometimes hear that there isn’t much to do in Mesquite. I find it to be just the opposite. Starting with our annual Mesquite Days, the activity here actually starts to pick up. Here is just a sample: For a period of six weeks you can explore Mesquite’s heritage by taking a walking tour. Or visit the many free exhibits at the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum and Fine Arts Center, attending an old-fashioned bake-off, a Founders Forum, and even a Zumbathon. All, of course, in air-conditioned comfort.

Want some outdoor activities? The list is nearly endless. We have a Mayor’s Breakfast, Mesquite Days BBQ, rides and carnival activities for the family, an old-fashioned family fun night, and of course, don’t miss the Mesquite Days Parade.

Is adventure your thing? Nearby hikes and other outdoor activities can be found at Zion and Bryce National Parks, Cedar Breaks, Cathedral Gorge, and Valley of Fire. Like it a bit cooler? Visit Brian Head Resort for the day. If staying closer to home is more to your liking, be sure to check out Mesquite MX, our well-kept city parks and trail system, and of course, our first class city Recreation Center.

All in all, Mesquite has plenty of activities to keep us all moving and busy as we approach our warmer temperatures. There is no need to remain in your homes should you choose to enjoy and explore all we have in this “Gem in the Desert.”

Why I Love O

ne rainy day in Seattle, I stumbled upon Mesquite. That was early 2004.

I was searching for a sunny getaway when an ad caught my eye. After locating Mesquite on a map, I came for a visit and left with a new home.

In spite of the rain in Seattle, I grew up in the outdoors. I spent lots of time hiking, camping, and exploring. Mesquite offers all of that and more. Within sight, there are hundreds of miles to hike and explore here. Flat Top Mesa offers some stunning views and the Virgin Mountains quickly take you out of the desert with their pine trees, running creeks, and snow.

The small-town nature of Mesquite makes it easy to get involved in all kinds of activities. At one time, I was a member of four non-profit boards! Currently, I enjoy my role with Mesquite Senior Games, Friends of Gold Butte, and Mesquite Geezer Softball.

While these are the reasons I came to Mesquite, the reason I stay is because of the people. Mesquite is a welcoming town and I have made many wonderful friends here. They are like family to me. ~Terri Rylander

hen we moved here from Idaho 17 years ago, I never imagined that Mesquite would turn into my HOME. Originally I came here to be closer to my mom and brother, but when they moved back to Idaho, I stayed because I liked it so much. The close-knit, small community and the amazing weather got me hooked. Between work, church, and the kids’ school, we have built an irreplaceable extended family. With six very active kids, there is never a shortage of activities going on to keep us busy. I love having the opportunity to see both sides of the Mesquite community through work. I see the kids and families through substitute teaching at the elementary school as well as the retired and business people during my work at the day spa. I feel like I know everyone in town! Perhaps the best part is that Mesquite is a quiet, safe place to raise our family and that’s why we love it! ~ Heidi Garcia

Kanab

W

elcome to the Greatest Earth on Show! In Kanab the possibilities for adventure are sure to be endless. If hiking in the most scenic areas, learning about the western heritage of southern Utah, or even participating in the many activities we have to offer excite you, then you need to be here.

Kanab is known to have the most extravagant 4th of July celebration around.

Starting with the main street parade, the festivities lead up to the Jacob Hamblin Park where delicious food and constant entertainment is provided with the grand finale being the most exciting fireworks production around.

During August, Kanab holds a street fair type of event celebrating our western heritage called Western Legends Roundup. Western Legends is a real cowboy event with a cowboy parade including long horned cattle being herded by cowboys on horses, as well as horse drawn covered wagons, and even mountain men. The festival also presents many western movie actors that have filmed numerous shows and movies in and around Kanab. They are available for meet

and greets and even autographs. Lots of live entertainment and good food is also available.

If you’d like to learn about our western heritage any other day, Kanab has a Heritage Museum full of history of the area and schools, military memorabilia, Arizona Strip information and stories, and countless other western items and books that you may not see or read anywhere else. Come learn about life in Kanab back in the good ol’ days.

Another well-known activity people come here for is hiking. We have the Squaw Trail, Bunting Trail, K-Hill Trail, and the Hog Canyon Trails, just to name a few.

There is also a 10K race every May around Mother’s Day starting from Moqui Cave through Highway 89 to the Jacob Hamblin Park. There are awards and trophies for those who participate and t-shirts are also available.

Something you must do while in town is take a self-guided tour of the many breathtaking sites and must-see areas in and around Kanab. With tons of land to

see and many adventures to take, why not seize the day and come to Kanab?

Why I Love I

love living in southern Utah because of the beautiful blue sky and clean air. Because of the hundreds of miles of trails just waiting to be explored, and because every day is a new adventure. You can walk, hike, bike, and ride your ATV. Just a short drive in any direction and you’ll find wide open spaces. Such a great quality of life.

Whether you’re a young family or retiree, artist, outdoor enthusiast or nature lover, there’s something here for everyone. I’m inspired by the amount of people who just want to get outside and be active, and you can here in southern Utah. There’s a welcoming sense of community, with people helping others. Over 300 days of sunshine a year—can’t beat it. I’m happy to share this with my friends and family, and so blessed to call this area my home!

I

t was 1967 and we were driving up Utah Hill on Old 91 seeing signs that said, “It’s not your car it’s the altitude.” Betsy and I purchased some burlap bags in Beaver Dam, filled them with water, and up and over we went. We were driving back to Philadelphia from Barstow, CA after being discharged from the USMC. We had no idea what the road ahead had in store for us but we sure did fall in love with the Kayenta Formation. Every trip out to the west we would stop somewhere in Utah to enjoy the beauty, the federal and state parks, and meeting special people along the path. Our sons’ (8 & 9 at the time) first rock trip was near Cisco, UT. We stopped at a gas station and the attendant said, “Your boys love rockin?” I said yes, and off they went into the desert. Betsy freaked out on me, saying “you don’t know who that man is!” But off in the distance I could see the boys with two small buckets walking back. They found petrified wood, dinosaur bones, and some dung.

Years later we purchased some land in Ivins, and built our home in 1997. I started teaching at Dixie State University, Red Mountain Resort, and doing merit badges for astronomy and geology for the Boy Scouts of America. I spent some time at Snow Canyon Clinic working with some great physicians and staff. Today, Betsy and I have a small glass business at the Tuacahn Market and we enjoy making people smile as our journey continues. It’s fun walking the path.

Catch the Best New Wave in the Desert

alifornia may be known for its beaches and surf, but Nevada has its own great wave – the Fire Wave in the Valley of Fire State Park. It is the park’s most recent, and favorite, addition to its list of hiking trails and attractions.

In fact the ancient rock formation is so new it doesn’t even appear on many of the existing maps.

"Someone in Germany took a picture of it, uploaded it, and it became very popular.” A German travel agency put it on one of their guides for the southwest and then, “They (foreign tourists) showed [up] out here and asked us where it was! We didn't have a trail out to it. We weren't sure exactly where it was."

The Fire Wave is a smaller version of “The Wave,” a famous geologic feature in the Coyote Buttes North area in the Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness on the Utah/Arizona border. That wave has limited access and requires permits to view. The Valley of Fire’s wave is open to all.

Now new improvements have made it is accessible from the Fire Wave trail head, the former #3 parking area, along the scenic drive to White Dome. It is a growing favorite and amazing photos of the area can be viewed by searching for Fire Wave on the Valley of Fire State Park Facebook page.

Park Superintendent Jim Hammons explains that highlighting the natural feature with its undulating bands of red and white color is a response to

piles of red rocks that look like giant hives.

Petrified wood is exposed in several areas easily accessed from the main road through the park, and Native American petroglyphs cover rock faces at Atlatal Rock on the western scenic route and in the canyon at Mouse’s Tank.

The Visitor’s center has displays highlighting local animal life like the Big Horn Sheep which can be seen in the park as well as the flora, fauna, and native artifacts. Rangers are available to offer assistance on things to do and see in the park and the gift shop sells maps, snacks, and memorabilia.

Hiking Valley of Fire Most of the hikes shown on the park maps are short to medium in length, and require easy to moderate exertion for average hikers. The park staff also plans guided

hikes to highlight special features or events in the park. These hikes are often longer and more difficult. Some of the guided hikes include White Domes Trail, Atlatl Rock, Colorful Canyons, Petrified Logs, Wildflower Hikes, Beyond Mouse's Tank, Fire Wave-Kaolin Wash, and Duck Rock Loop. Special hikes are planned throughout the year to allow access to areas of the park that do not have trails or meet seasonal opportunities. Guided hikes allow a limited number of hikers so those interested should watch the park's Facebook page for the addition of new hikes, regular updates, and opportunities to sign up.

theater. Presenters explain the park’s geological history, human history, and common flora and fauna. They also host “Bats in the Sky,” a look at fascinating facts about these largely misunderstood creatures and “The Basics of Rock Art,” a short presentation on the various forms of rock art found throughout the American Southwest. The talk includes methods commonly used for dating rock art, how it

is interpreted and what is known about the peoples who made it.

Special activities for children are designed to be educational or just plain fun. “The Crayon Rock Cycle” and “Make your own Petroglyph” workshops offer children an opportunity to learn about how rocks are formed and Native American history.

Other Activities Valley of Fire Park also has access for equestrian use. Horses are allowed throughout the accessible areas of the park but not near the campsites, picnic areas or along existing roadways. Dogs are also allowed in the park but must be on a six foot leash and under the handler’s control at all times.

Rappelling is allowed in one designated area of the park. To reduce damage to the rocks, those wishing to rappel need to check in with the visitor's center or call for information about the location and restrictions before rappelling. For those who are not comfortable on their own or who want to learn rappelling, Awesome Adventures, located in Overton just outside the park to the east, is the only company presently holding a special use permit to take climbers into the park.

The Valley of Fire also hosts special events and presentations throughout the year that non-hikers and children can enjoy.

Some of these include the Annual World Atlatl Competition, Atlatal Demonstrations, and Moche Toss. The Atlatal is an ancient weapon used by natives for hunting and appears in petroglyphs in the park.

Members of the World Atlatl Association and park staff hold demonstrations on how to use the ancient spear-throwing tool and visitors are welcome to try their hand at using it. They also demonstrate the Moche Toss, an Atlatal game based on ancient artwork by the Moche Culture, which existed in Peru during 100-800 CE. The Visitor Center also hosts talks by park staff and Conservation Educators from the Nevada Department of Wildlife in their

photo by Stoney Ward, Awesome Adventures different rock types and shows them how to use crayons to create sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. The petroglyph workshop lets them carve their own modern petroglyphs into faux “rocks” made with arts and crafts materials. It is a fun way for children learn to respect the land around them and to never carve, scratch, or deface any of the rocks in the park.

While the park staff develops and holds events regularly, special event permits are available if you would like to plan your own private group event. Permits are also available for commercial events, and activities like filming or night photography.

If unsure whether your activity needs a permit, call the park for information.

Valley of Fire is an easy day trip from any direction. Located northwest of the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, it is approximately 55 miles southwest of Mesquite along I-15.

Take the interstate to Exit 93 to Overton and follow the signs through town, past the Lost City Museum to State Route 169. From Las Vegas it’s about 60 miles northeast along I-15 to the Valley of Fire turnoff, past the Moapa Band of Paiutes Travel Plaza and out to the park. It is also accessible from Boulder City along the North Shore Road of Lake Mead. V

10th Amazing Earthfest 2016 sends

“Love Letter t o Humanit y.”

ou are invited to the City of Kanab, Utah to the 10th annual Amazing Earthfest, May 8 - 14, that this year is celebrating the 100th anniversary of America’s National Parks, the 20th anniversary of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and our first decade of service to Kane County and the City of Kanab.

To commemorate this anniversary we will feature We Know Not What We Do, a national and international award winning documentary that sends a love letter to humanity, imploring us to make a moral and spiritual shift in the way we humans think about and live on our planet Earth. Special guest and keynote speaker Elizabeth Gaylynn Baker, recently honored with a national humanitarian award, will appear with her film.

As a centerpiece of her visit to Kanab and as a highlight of this year’s festival, there will be a free Mother’s Day screening of We Know Not What We Do, at Crescent Moon Theater, Sunday, May 8, at 6:00 PM. After the personal introduction by Ms. Baker, the film will be shown, and then followed by a lively community conversation to explore thoughts, feelings, and new directions that individuals, families, and communities can take in responding to a changing world.

Produced by Aaron David Taylor, the documentary is a tough but tender plea to human beings. It presents both the voice of love and the voice of reason, as it sets out to creatively examine the most important challenge of our time – man’s relationship to his environment. The film presents the story of this very misunderstood relationship, and how this misunderstanding has caused destruction in both the biosphere and the biodiversity of planet Earth.

The film features interviews with Katherine Hayhoe, Richard Alley, Mary Pipher, Chief Leonard Crow Dog and many others, as it explores exactly what is being sacrificed because of our unbridled addiction to fossil fuels, and examines the lack of will that we are displaying in solving the climate crisis. Association. She volunteered many hours at the gallery front desk with members Jo Anne Tower and Greg Hamilton. Greg and VVAA President Sue Brooks were formulating a lecture series to draw visitors to the not-so-highly-trafficked art gallery. The series was about to launch when Greg handed Linda the program brochure, saying, “You handle this.”

Thus, Linda set out to find folks to tell about the art at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery. For the next 60 months she orchestrated unique programs featuring everybody from a weaver who spun yarn from her dog’s hair to the CasaBlanca chefs who carved ice sculptures with chain saws on a 105-degree June day.

Hearing requests for a cowboy poetry program, Linda enlisted Butch Burkholder to teach how to write and recite cowboy poetry. In February 2007, a dozen poets

Linda Faas stood tall as they presented Mesquite's first-ever Cowboy Poetry Hootenanny. The sell-out show has evolved into Mesquite's Western Roundup, which recently staged its 10th anniversary performances.

An erstwhile poet and writer, Linda says, “I never planned to develop my writing, but here in Mesquite I discovered that skill was useful to organizations that needed publicity and other writing. I’ve probably published 300 local news stories and press releases over the past 12 years.” She comments, “I try to put enthusiasm and a special twist into each story and just hope it works.” She has contributed nearly 20 articles for View on Mesquite Magazine since 2008. Her Mesquite features have appeared in Nevada Magazine and NevadaGram. Linda loved her 15-month stint with Mesquite Citizen Journal, reporting cultural events. She viewed it as a way to promote Mesquite life. She marvels at the talents of her Mesquite neighbors. “It takes courage to stand and perform. Mesquite is a better place when people are willing to step up,” she says.

The artists association called on Linda to serve as president in 2011-12. “Holding that job was a honor. I tried my best to promote our artists’ beautiful work and bring energy and fun to the Gallery.” Artist and public participation in the gallery soared as she staged unique exhibitions like Doors and Oars. She lured seven regional artist groups to a new Mesquite Fine Art Invitational Exhibition and helped identify Mesquite's gallery as a force in the Southern Nevada art scene.

To advocate public art, Linda organized the popular “Mesquite Coyote” contest when she chaired the Gallery’s 10th anniversary celebration. Many of those 40 clever coyotes are still seen around town. She

replaced the gallery's tired landscaping with a low-water cactus garden, held kids' chalk art Saturdays, and promoted local businesses at gallery events.

Her proposals earned funding for VVAA's art education programs, but when the city declined to fund local arts in its 2012 budget, she brought her donation jug to City Council and solicited their personal donations. She raised $142 for VVAA scholarships that evening. “It’s really up to all of us to support the arts in our community,” she states.

She recalls, “Toquop threatened to forever destroy Mesquite's clean air and beauty.

I awoke nights, imagining the rumble of trains carrying coal to that plant.” With Michele Burkett, Claire Kirchen and others, Linda formed Defend Our Desert.

She wrote DOD position papers and news releases. She flew to Washington DC to carry Mesquite's plight to the Nevada Delegation as the town battled Toquop for three years. Passionate local opposition was key in thwarting the project, drawing national attention to the adverse effects “big money” might have on a small town. Says Linda, “I continue to be proud of the stand we took to protect our environment and our community.”

Recent times find Linda filling diverse roles in community activities. Leading the 2016 Senior Games History Walk, she reprised a walk she introduced to the Desert Dames Hiking Group she formed in 2005. “I want to help others appreciate Mesquite’s character and history,” she says. “Mesquite is home. We have wonderful people here.” She continues, “A couple months ago Al was hospitalized and they asked if I had a support group. I instinctively answered, ‘Yes. I have Mesquite.’”

Her statement couldn’t be more true. We’re all here for you, Linda.

Mesquite appreciates all you do for everyone in the community.

Experience Awesome Adventures in Costa Rica

T

here’s a little piece of paradise nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. While the distance is barely 200 miles, that area includes some of the most beautiful rainforests, volcanoes, rivers, mountains, beaches, and biodiversity I've ever encountered. Last May, I had the opportunity to enjoy a ten-day tour of Costa Rica and what an adventure it was!

While there are beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, it is not the type of vacation to sit on a lounge chair in a large resort and sip on fruity drinks. To truly experience Costa Rica, one must move around the country. I chose to visit Manuel Antonio, Arenal, and Guanacaste and I still did not get to see everything on my list. The highlight was Arenal, where my room sat at the base of the volcano.

Every morning, I was awakened by my Costa Rican alarm clock which consisted of colorful birds and the famous howler monkeys. Like clockwork around 5:00 every morning, the fascinating creatures would start their outdoor symphony. I learned a howler monkey could be heard as far away as three miles.

Can you imagine what they sound like right outside your hotel room? Needless to say, I did not have to set my own alarm clock or request a wake-up call.

I had to leave my comfort zone and embrace my inner Tarzan on a daily basis as I found myself soaring through the canopies on zip lines and hanging bridges in the lush green rainforest. Much to my surprise, rappelling down five 100-foot waterfalls ended up being my favorite activity. Each day presented a new challenge – everything from whitewater rafting to hiking and horseback riding.

Every activity featured incredible scenery and wildlife in every direction. We saw sloths, red macaws, 20 foot crocodiles, monkeys, toucans, and more frogs than I can count.

The people (Ticos) were just as beautiful as the scenery and they were eager to share their country and culture with us.

Our tour guide informed us our meals would consist of a choice of beans and rice or rice and beans. Of course he was

joking, but both versions were scrumptious! I even found myself trying to savor one last serving at the airport before we flew home. In addition to the traditional rice and beans, we enjoyed local coffee, chocolate, fresh fish, fruits, and some of the best pineapple I’ve ever had. Eating pineapple will never be the same again. Of course, I can’t forget the traditional tres leches and coconut flan we enjoyed each evening for dessert. I didn't worry about eating too much as the calories were burned off every day as we hiked, climbed, and paddled our way through each activity.

Pura Vida is a very common phrase in Costa Rica. The official definition according to the Urban Dictionary is "the law of the land in Costa Rica. The expression is used in many forms, from a greeting, to a synonym for ‘excellent.’ A synonym of ‘hakuna matata.’ Life is wonderful; enjoy it." There's simply no other way to describe it and one must visit this beautiful country in order to fully understand the meaning. I loved my ten days of "Pura Vida"

and I can’t wait to go back. I highly recommend a vacation to Costa Rica to anyone who loves stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and exciting adventures. V

Guardians at the Ready: Mesquite’s School Crossing Guards

by Linda Faas very school day, students walk to Virgin Valley Elementary School, and most cross the main thoroughfare of Mesquite: Mesquite Blvd. and Sandhill Road. Mesquite has made student safety a high priority, and a handful of caring adults transform those crossings from danger zones into safety zones for all. They are unsung heroes who are guardians of the kids.

Over 15 years ago, Mesquite resident Richard “Buddy” Morris formed a group of citizen volunteers to help the youngest students safely navigate busy street crossings between their homes and school. He and a few others took on the task of escorting students across city streets that had become crowded with Mesquite-style “rush hour traffic.” Knowing that it only takes a second for a tragedy to strike, Richard and his colleagues committed to keeping the young kids out of harm’s way. He knew most young pedestrians were inexperienced, and

both they and adult drivers were often careless or distracted. Walking, biking, and skateboarding across the main thoroughfare of town could be risky.

Fast forward – make that “moving at a safe speed forward”– to 2016 there have been some significant changes in the structure of the crossing guard brigade, but the basic mission has not changed. The Mesquite Police Department now employs Mesquite’s crossing guards as part time personnel and equips them with shirts, jackets, hats, and hand-carried stop signs.

They also put the teeth in the laws that tell drivers to pay attention to speed limits and pedestrians.

The crossing guard team now consists of Richard Morris, his wife Renee Morris, and Allen “Sarge” Hunt. These three are well-known in Mesquite as not only crossing guards, but also faithful volunteers who donate their time, talent, and heart to many organizations in town.

The citizen guards report to the Mesquite Police Department, with Officer Darin Wilkins as their contact person. Guards work “on the clock” about 12.5 hours a week. Guards are present at the two school-designated school crossings from 7:15 am to 9:15 am, and 3 pm to 4 pm.

Because they have become aware of the actual times that kids find their way to school and back home, they may arrive early to make sure the little ones are looked out for. “I see kids coming early because their parents are headed off to work,” says Allen Hunt. “I try to be here early because this is a busy commercial corner.”

Officer Wilkins is proud of his team. “I have worked with them for over eight years, and they are great people! They are my favorite-est,” he effuses. “No better team could have been put in place than these folks.” Wilkins is the school liaison officer for the Police Department, working with other programs like D.A.R.E. and GREAT, directed toward helping young students make wise life choices.

The Mesquite Police Department also runs programs like “Shop with a Cop,” and “Trunk or Treat” to create trusting, respectful, and caring bonds between children, the police, and the community at large. “I love working with the kids. It has been my best assignment in my 16 years with MPD.” Besides giving a helping hand to the kids as they cross the street, Renee, Buddy, Sarge, and Officer Wilkins provide a smile,

words of guidance, and an understanding ear as the children navigate their way through more than just rush hour traffic.

Many children need help learning to make safe choices as they sometimes try to take shortcuts through jammed parking lots and business driveways. Learning to be mindful of personal safety goes a long way in life. Sometimes a child needs a smile and a word of encouragement as the struggle with personal situations spills over into their time walking to school. It is all in a day’s work for these caring people to be kind, strong, adult role models for their young charges.

Begin by thinking about how you would like your outdoor space to function. Will it be used for dining?

Hosting parties? A peaceful reading nook? Make a list of all the things you would like to do in the space and use it as a guide to determine what type of furniture is necessary.

Polywood patio furniture lumber is made from highdensity polyethylene (HDPE), where the primary raw material is derived from post-consumer bottle waste, such as milk and detergent bottles or other HDPE postindustrial material. It is eco-friendly, easy to maintain, UV protected, and extremely durable. Outdoor furniture of this material is available in a variety of wood-look styles and in a variety of colors. Wipe down with a mild soap mixture and hose down for maintenance.

hether you have a porch, pool, or patio, take advantage of Mesquite’s wonderful outdoor weather by keeping in mind just a few guidelines in creating your perfect outside space. The first and most important step is selecting the best patio furniture. Thoughtful planning will ensure your outdoor living space is inviting for years to come.

Understanding what your furniture is made of will make a difference in the level of maintenance required to keep it in top shape.

Teak is the most expensive of all woods used for outdoor furniture. It is an Asian hardwood with a naturally high oil content which helps it withstand outdoor extremes. Teak furniture should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water annually and followed up with a layer of teak oil to maintain its warm wood color.

Cedar is a member of the pine family. It is also highly resistant to weathering and can last for years outdoors. Cedar can be left unfinished, stained, or painted, but requires an annual coating of protective furniture oil.

Wicker can be made from a variety of materials, including cane, willow, and rattan, which are woven together to form baskets and chairs. Wicker is typically treated at least once a year with a clear coat varnish to increase its durability.

Cast aluminum furniture has been around for centuries and can be created with fine detail by pouring molten aluminum into a cast. It has become a very popular choice for both indoor and outdoor furniture. By the time the furniture is delivered to the stores it has been fully treated and can withstand extreme elements.

Spraying it off with water is usually all the maintenance its needs.

Wrought iron means the metal is hammered, twisted, or bent into shape. It has a natural resistance to corrosion due to its high glass content. It holds up well

Resin is used to create a range of outdoor furniture including wicker-looking furniture that is more durable, fade-resistant, and easier to maintain than natural wicker. Resin wicker is also mildew and rust resistant.

Resin is cool – literally; it remains cool to the touch under hot sun, providing added comfort for patio or pool areas. It is resistant to staining, chlorine, suntan oils, and the elements, making it ideal for use in your outdoor living space.

Pay attention to the textiles. You can’t grab a pillow from your family room and expect it to adapt to life outside on the patio. Most textiles designed for indoor/ outdoor use are made from all-weather materials that repel water or encourage moisture to evaporate quickly by remaining porous.

Fabrics designed for use outdoors are usually fade resistant and UV protected, too. They’ll look good and feel soft and comfortable for several seasons. When you’re evaluating fabrics for outdoor furniture, check seams for heavy-duty thread and consistent, even stitches not only on cushions but pillows, curtains, blinds, and umbrellas. Choose cushions with vents that encourage airflow and quick drying. Invest in furniture with cushions that can be unzipped for periodic airing, repair, or replacement.

The old adage “you get what you pay for” is true for patio furniture. Consider your furniture purchase a long-term investment. Less expensive patio furniture options may only last a couple of seasons and will become brittle and lose their vibrant coloring. Shop with care, checking consumer reports and reviews before making a big purchase. V

There’s More to First-Aid Than CPR

So - let’s take a minute to review some simple steps that can make a big difference in your life and possibly the life of someone else.

R

eady? Summer fun is just about here– sun, sports, pools and other outdoor activities abound. It’s no surprise that the summer season can also the busiest for your local emergency room and medical clinics.

Educating yourself and your family about how to handle an emergency can make for

If someone near you is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

A few minutes can make a huge difference for someone experiencing a stroke or heart attack. For other emergencies, there are steps you can take to help while waiting for an ambulance.

If someone is choking and is not pregnant, you can help: Support the person in need by steadying them from behind with one hand and using the other hand to hit them between the shoulder blades, causing them to cough.

If this doesn’t work, stand behind them, make a fist and place it between their rib cage and belly button, cover your closed fist with your other hand and squeeze hard and repeat. If this fails, call 911 immediately.

First aid kit Bumps, scrapes and boo-boos can be handled at home with a well-stocked first aid kit. A necessity in every home, a first aid kit can help handle minor emergencies that don’t require a doctor’s immediate care. Your kit should be stored in a central location in your home – within easy reach for adults, not children. A properly stocked kit can help you manage emergency needs ranging from a burn to a deep cut.

Check your kit regularly and replace missing items or expired medications. It’s

a good idea to have a first aid kit in your home and another in the car. Don’t forget to take it with you on vacations, too.

If someone has an open wound without an embedded object: Check the severity of bleeding. For wounds with light to moderate bleeding, you can use a first aid kit to bandage it. First, clean your hands or wear disposable gloves, then clean the wound using water and bandage it without applying ointment.

Depending on the situation, call a medical provider or visit an Urgent Care clinic. In Mesquite, the Quick Care walk-in clinic is open seven days a week [Monday – Friday, 7:30AM to 5:30PM / Saturday and Sunday, 9AM to 2PM], and located at 450 Hillside Drive, (702) 345-2650.

If the wound is more extensive and the bleeding will not stop, or there is an embedded object, dial 911 or get to the nearest emergency room.

Be prepared According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, every emergency can be managed using the four-step process: prevent, prepare, recognize, and act. This includes mock emergency drills with family, CPR classes from your local hospital or Red Cross office, and teaching children to call 911 in an emergency. Discuss with your child what constitutes an emergency and which situations are appropriate (and not appropriate) to call for emergency help. Help your child to memorize and practice the information they’ll need to provide: their home address, their phone number, and other questions the dispatcher will ask about the person who needs help, such as whether they are conscious and breathing.V

Simplifying CPR If someone has stopped breathing or you suspect their heart has stopped, they may need cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you haven’t taken a formal CPR class, it’s best to call 911 and perform ‘hands only’ CPR while you wait on the ambulance.

To perform hands-only CPR, kneel beside the unconscious person. Position the person on their back and place the heel of one of your hands on the center of their chest. Place your other hand on top and press down to start chest compressions. Aim for 100 compressions per minute, or to the beat of the Bee Gees tune “Stayin’ Alive.”

If your arms get fatigued, scan the area for someone else to help. Keep going until an ambulance arrives or the patient begins breathing!

Zion and Bryce Join the National Parks

merica is celebrating the National Parks Centennial with events, exhibits, park projects, and plenty of public engagement. Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park will most likely experience record crowds in 2016 as they reflect on their past and share their future visions.

Zion National Park Settled in the 1860s by Mormon pioneers, named Mukuntuweap National Monument in 1909, and following the completion of a “passable road” into the canyon, Zion became a National Park in 1919. American filmmaker Ken Burns and award-winning author Dayton Duncan documented on film and in print the history of America’s National Parks. They tell the story of how Horace Albright, the second Director of the National Park Service was the first senior official of the Interior Department to visit Zion Canyon. As Albright described Zion, “The great towers, temples, spires, and peaks appeared unearthly as they encircled the narrow, lush gorge cut by the sparkling Virgin River. It was love at first sight for me. I was so impressed... that I determined we should expand Mukuntuweap and have it made a national park.”

Zion Lead Park Ranger Jin Prugsawan explains, “The goal of the National Park Service Centennial is to connect with and create the next generation of park visitors, supporters, and advocates.

Communicating and celebrating the NPS Centennial and building support with the next generation of park supporters is a critical strategy for addressing constrained budgets and challenges that impact how the National Park Service carries out its mission. There are four overarching areas of the NPS Centennial effort: A Call to Action (www.nps.gov/calltoaction/), Find Your Park Awareness Campaign (www.findyourpark.com), Working with Partners (national and local), and special events hosted across the United States.”

Zion visitation has grown from 3,692 visitors in 1920 to over 3.6 million in 2015.

To address issues related to visitation growth, park management created a Visitor Use Task Force. Zion management expanded the shuttle operation

season, increased trash and recycling services, and is working on a Visitor Use Management Plan to protect park resources and provide quality visitor experiences. Prugsawan describes a planned construction project, “In the next 3-5 years dependent on funding, there will be a redesign of the South Entrance Station to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.”

Volunteering at Zion has also increased.

In 2015, volunteers contributed 21,800 service hours and Prugsawan notes, “We are extremely appreciative of those who spend their time volunteering at the park.

We are always looking for new volunteers, especially local volunteers who are able to routinely volunteer throughout the season or year.”

Even when crowds fill Zion’s main canyon, wilderness seekers can head to Kolob Canyons where only 231,803 visited during 2015. Kolob Canyons offer an easy 1-mile round trip hike along the Timber Creek Overlook trail, a moderate hike along

Taylor Creek, or a strenuous 7-mile hike from Lee Pass to Kolob Arch. Prugsawan emphasizes, “A remarkable 84% of Zion National Park is designated wilderness,“ and “Stepping onto the trails in the Kolob Canyons area of the park often places you in very pristine sections.”

Bryce National Park Just 70 miles northeast of Zion, Bryce Canyon became a National Monument in 1924 and a National Park in 1928. Like Zion, visitation swelled to 1.7 million in 2015. Harmons Goes Solar Opening of Long-Awaited Santa Clara Store

he new Harmons Grocery in Santa Clara, which opened in late February, has brought an end to the community’s nearly decade-long wait since the project was first announced.

The first Harmons to use solar power, this Santa Clara location also boasts the largest solar installation in Utah, which is expected to offset 40% of the store’s annual electricity consumption.

“Santa Clara and Ivins are a little bit of a food desert. You’ve got to drive a bit before you get to a grocery store,” says Scott Lewis, the store director. “There’s two great communities that we were able to offer a grocery store with great food and customer service to out here.”

Described by Lewis as one of the Utahbased chain’s finer stores, the new 67,100-square-foot location offers a huge assortment of both mainstream and gourmet grocery items, a scratch-made bakery, cooking school, bistro, gelato bar, a U.S. Post Office, drive-thru pharmacy, fuel station, and conference rooms.

Harmons first eyed a western Washington County store back in 2007, and started

The following year, the company had the opportunity to purchase a prime piece of real estate on the border of Santa Clara and Ivins with expansive red rock views.

Encouraged by resurging growth in the area, the timing was finally right in 2015.

Between transfers from the St. George location and new hires, the store introduced about 250 jobs to the area.

Aside from cost reasons, companies looking to install solar are often met with opposition from municipalities that would rather keep the energy profits. However, Santa Clara was very receptive, says Lundquist.

Harmons locations in the Salt Lake area have long used wind power to offset a portion of their energy bill. But renewable energy is just one facet of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“Grocery stores, by nature, are not the most environmentally friendly industry,” says Frank Lundquist, vice president of store development. “We really try to minimize our impact on the environment.”

Anything and everything that can be recycled is; all green waste becomes compost or animal feed. The stores primarily use paper bags, which are made out of repurposed cardboard. “Not all of the decisions that we make for

“Santa Clara City was anxiously awaiting the day Harmons would ‘officially’ come to Santa Clara. We feel very lucky to have a store like Harmons,” city representative Bradi Frei says. “It also opens opportunities for other commercial projects for Santa Clara.”

Lewis says that Harmons plans to incorporate solar in both future and existing stores wherever it’s feasible.

Harmons interviewed five different solar providers before awarding the project to Creative Energies, a pioneer in clean

power systems with contracts across the west. “We’re honored to work with a company like Harmons,” project developer Mike Walton says. “We feel that they can be a community leader in our state and region, showing other companies that solar makes financial sense.”

Creative Energies and Harmons spent several years trying to pinpoint the store where solar would be most effective, and found the answer when another southern Utah location was greenlighted. “When we were looking at building a store down here, it made sense with the 300 or so days of sun we have to do that,” Lewis says.

The 2,196 optimized solar modules are capable of generating just over 1 million kilowatt hours each year. In terms of fossil fuel energy saved, that amounts to 902,475 pounds of coal not burned, 1,119,939 miles not driven, and 17,259 trees planted.

The system is ballasted on the roof—there are no rooftop penetrations—with an east-west orientation. Walton says that although solar traditionally faces south, the building could accommodate approximately 25% more modules this way. “It’s becoming more and more common in the industry. Since silicon is no longer the most expensive part of solar, we don’t have to optimize the tilt and the angle of the array,” he says.

Virtually no maintenance (aside from an occasional cleaning) is required, Walton says, since the installation doesn’t have moving parts. Creative Energies can monitor the system online to make sure everything's running smoothly.

Lewis says that the solar array was a more than $1 million investment for Harmons, though he’s not at liberty to reveal the exact figure. “We will recoup some of that in a lower power bill, but really, we’re doing it because it’s what’s best for the community,” he says.

It’s a Wrap – Another Successful Mesquite Senior Games

elebrating its 15th anniversary, the Mesquite Senior Games wrapped up another successful year. Participants came from towns across the US and Canada, in addition to many local Mesquite residents. There were participants from ages 1 to 88! By the time the numbers are counted, it’s expected that over 1800 people participated in the games this year.

Along with some new events, there were some new sports directors as well. Donna Eads took over as Director of Tennis.

She expanded the tournament to two locations and added a fun social night. Clint Bostwick, legendary hiker, led the new fitness hike down a desert wash talking about the various plants and animals there. Mary Ellen Anderson is the new Director of Target

Pistol, which grew considerably this year. And, Frank Garcia, of the Sun City Pickleball club, took over as the new director for another sellout event.

Of course the games would not thrive without the sports directors that come back year after year, continuing to improve their events. These include David Zehnder/Bridge, Linda Faas and Claire Kirchen/History Tour, Nick Montoya and Zach Robison/ Basketball, Gary Culver/Track & Field, Terri Rylander and Lenora Hutchins/Long Drive, Nancy Hewett/Bicycling, Jeff and Maria Northern/Bocce Ball, and Marty Wilks/Bowling.

Every year, the Mesquite Senior Games looks to add new events.

Suggestions include weight lifting, bicycle endurance race, skeet shooting, swimming, billiards, and even a poker tournament. All it takes is a willing volunteer to step up and organize the event.

Mesquite Senior Games will provide assistance in making it happen.

It literally takes a village to put on the games and couldn’t be done without the help of so many volunteers and generous donations by the City of Mesquite, Sun City, and local businesses. Hire aBulldog

V

irgin Valley High School has a new program called "Hire a Bulldog." This new program is intended to develop students' work-skills and give them practical work experience, while at the same time providing local businesses high quality employees. This program creates a true win-win situation for the businesses and the students at Virgin Valley. “Hire a Bulldog” helps students obtain and succeed at their first job while they are still in high school. And it helps businesses find loyal employees who have good attitudes and a good work ethic.

Yori Ludvigson, the school’s business teacher and the “Hire a Bulldog” director, is the link between the school and the businesses. Before teaching at Virgin Valley, Yori ran a successful mortgage company and helped train/mentor other businesses. He has hired many employees and has firsthand knowledge of what a business wants from its workers and what workers should provide their employers. Yori will provide the students who participate an experienced mentor on campus and will provide the participating businesses an accomplished advocate.

Mr. Cliff Hughes, Virgin Valley’s principal, adjusted Yori’s schedule to provide him the time needed to make the “Hire a

Bulldog” program successful. Cliff said: “The purpose of the program is to help our students develop work skills on campus that will translate into success in their after school, summer, and even full time jobs. We want to get students job ready.” Stephen Waite, the co-founder of the program, said “Yori is the perfect man for the job. I am certain our students and our community will benefit from “Hire a Bulldog.” The students that join the program are trained in the different areas. They also are required to be to their classes on time and keep their grades up.

The businesses can call or email the “Hire a Bulldog” staff and give feedback on employees and areas where improvement is needed.

Mr. Ludvigson said this has been a joint effort with support of the administration, counseling office, English department, and many businesses that have come to the VVHS to work with and train the students. “We are excited for the approximately one third of our graduates who continue their education at college, but are equally excited to prepare the others to find success in the jobs they pursue after graduating. Many of our students are propelled into the workforce, and the Hire a Bulldog program teaches

these students a variety of skills that will help them excel. We are excited about the program and how it will tie the local students to the businesses and the community. We will teach the students how to fill out an application and build a resumé. We will hold mock interviews and train them on do’s and ‘don’t’s of being a quality employee. Our goal is to give students the tools they need to be a successful employee. We will work with the businesses to make sure the students get the help they need in order to be effective and in order for the businesses to be successful.”

The idea took shape as Stephen Waite and Yori talked about the different students that were looking for work, while at the same time so many businesses needed help. The outcome has already been a huge success. DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN - 2015 DENNIS HANGEY Mr. Hangey is widely known for his bag piping at the 9/11 ceremonies, funerals, and other events held from Cedar City to Boulder City. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Exchange Club and oversees the annual 1000 Flags Over Mesquite. Not only does he own a local upholstery business in Mesquite, he donates pizza twice a month to the reading program for Bowler Elementary School. Every place he goes, he constantly promotes the City of Mesquite.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - 2015 ROBIN CUDE Robin has been a city employee since 1997, and in 2004 was reclassified to the position of Building Assistant/Inspector.

She continued her education and training and is now a fullycertified Combination Inspector, qualified to inspect residential and commercial buildings for building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical. She has been instrumental in helping to automate the building permit and business licensing processes.

Robin now functions as the primary building inspector and her case load is up to an average of 30 to 40 inspections per day.

She is a multi-talented and trusted resource in the Development Service Department.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - 2015 MIKE BENHAM CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) team leader. In his time as CERT Leader, Mike has brought new life into a program that was stagnant. The CERT Program has increased from 10 to 21 members. His team also volunteers one day a month to change out smoke detector batteries for the residents of Mesquite.

Mike also helps out at information booths such as Mesquite Night Out, Vendor Fair and as security for Vienna Boys Choir.

Mike and his wife Debbie have volunteered to be Santa & Mrs. Claus annually for the past five years at various events such as Christmas in July, Parade of Lights , Shop with a Cop, Emergency Services Christmas Party, and Highland Manor, to name a few.

Spring into Summer with Your BFF

pring is in the air, and Mesquite & southern Utah offer an abundance of outdoor destinations to explore with your BFF (Best Furry Friend).

Here in our desert climate, we have a special relationship with our pets. They don’t stay outdoors like common “animals” — No! Our pets chill inside with the family, and are included in family activities more so than in other communities. Many of our residents have a transitory lifestyle, and take their pets on the road with them 365 days a year.

So, before it gets too hot, now is the perfect time to plan those outdoor adventures with Fido in mind, and enhance not only your fun, but that special BFF bond as well. After all, our dogs are a member of the family, and want nothing more than to be at our side wherever, and whenever, we go.

Of course, fun and adventure are key…. But the most important thing to remember this time of year is to keep your pets hydrated. Always carry plenty of water when traveling with your pet, and know the signs of dehydration.* There are many products on the market to help your pets stay cool, from special mats to insulated vests. But it’s also fun and easy to make your own remedies, including frozen dog treats (pupsicles) and frozen bandanas to keep them chilled. It goes without saying, but please, never ever leave your pet in a hot vehicle. If it’s 100-degress outside, you car interior will be 140-degrees within 15 minutes!

From dog parks and local dog-walking groups, to hiking and canoeing, there are plenty of activities that you and your dog can enjoy together. Most parks in our area are dog friendly, and spring is a wonderful time to take your dog along on the family picnic. This will be especially fun if there’s a lake nearby that you can both cool off in.

One of the most popular activities in our area is hiking, and we are blessed to have so many trails and parks to choose from. Pets have become widely welcomed on hiking trails, including all trails and lakefront at Lake Mead, and even a few in Zion (Pa’rus Trail, a paved 3.5 mile round-trip walk, is a popular destination). Be sure to call ahead when planning an outdoor excursion to ensure pets are welcome.

There are hundreds of specialized outdoor dog products on the market for hiking, camping and boating. In fact, it’s become a whole new category in the pet industry, and you can go crazy buying anything from sunglasses (Doggles) and sunscreen to GPS Beacons. But if you’re not inclined to spend as much on your dog’s outdoor gear as on your own, just stick to the necessities: water, leash, first aid kit, and of course, poop bags.

Other useful items to pack include dog packs, life vests (with a handle) and booties (if you aren’t familiar with these, search them on YouTube and be prepared for a good laugh!).

An overview of outdoor adventures with your dog in our area wouldn’t be complete without a mention of dangerous critters.

We all know that rattlesnakes are a fact of life here in the desert. Thankfully, there are only 1-2 reported snakebites in Mesquite

and southern Utah per year. That said, local veterinarians highly recommend that you get your dog a rattlesnake vaccine. Note that a vaccine does not prevent poisoning, but serves to “buy you time” in getting your pet to the veterinarian.* Scorpion stings are more common, but less dangerous. If your dog is stung, rinse with cold water, apply a cold compress and/or a baking soda and water paste, and take to your veterinarian.

Okay, so we can’t end on a scary note like that, so here are some other fun activities that you can engage in with your pet this spring:

Springing Forward New Developments at Coyote Springs

oyote Springs Golf Club is looking forward to a lot of activity in 2016. The Golf Club anticipates over 23,000 rounds of golf this year, and will have a refreshed and remodeled golf shop for customers as well as a new restaurant. Spring 2016 welcomes the long awaited addition of a small restaurant and full bar; remodeling of the former “golf lounge” has begun, and Coyote Springs Golf Club hopes to have a grand opening of “MITCH’S BAR & GRILL” in early May. “We’ve named our first golf club restaurant after our renowned mascot – Mitch, a Yellow Heeler who joined the golf club as protector and mascot in 2008,” said Karl Larcom, Director of Golf. “Mitch is recognized and asked after by most repeat golfers here at Coyote Springs, and it seemed a fitting recognition,” Larcom explained.

Mitch’s Bar & Grill will offer breakfast and lunch sandwiches and wraps, hot dogs, hamburgers, quesadillas, and naturally a full bar to mix (most any) drink a golfer might want. “We’ll offer Bloody Mary’s and breakfast burritos, or a Mimosa and some scrambled eggs – whatever the golfer might want that we can make from our new kitchen; our goal will be to cater to what our golf customers want,” said Curt Russell, Coyote Springs Nevada Director of Operations.

“This new bar and grill is just what we need to entice more groups and events to make the picturesque Coyote Springs Golf Club the place to play golf,” agree Larcom and Russell.

“In addition to our longtime relationship with Golf Mesquite Nevada and OB Sports Card, we have a new transportation relationship with Platinum Transportation, and are working on a similar relationship with St. George Shuttle, to provide convenient and luxurious transportation from Las Vegas, St. George, or Mesquite, to Coyote Springs Golf Club, at reasonable prices,” Russell describes.

As Mitch’s Bar and Grill gets off the ground this Spring, so will the completion of the Coyote Springs Master Planned Community’s culinary water treatment plant, treated wastewater plant, and the required off site stormwater detention basins. Work has already commenced on these necessary infrastructure facilities, and are in varying degrees of completion.

“The contractor has already begun working on plans and getting up to speed on the status of all of the equipment, facilities, and related underground infrastructure,” says Albert Seeno, Owner of Coyote Springs Nevada. “We anticipate seeing onsite construction activities in mid-to-late summer on these

necessary infrastructure facilities,” Seeno comments. “We’ve had institutional power from Lincoln County Power District since Fall 2012, and once we’ve completed the rest of the community infrastructure – water, wastewater, and stormwater controls – we can decide when, and with what type of homes, we want to start building,” Seeno explained.

Do it Naturally Education in and About the Outdoors

e are fortunate enough to live in one of the most amazing environments on Earth. People travel from around the world to spend time in our backyard. Host to more public land than any other state, Utah and especially southern Utah is the perfect place if you love being outdoors or want to learn more about the environment around you. From summer camps and college courses to short programs offered at our local national parks, there are amazing opportunities for everyone regardless of your age.

For kids, the most well known programs are the Junior Ranger programs offered at each national park. Geared toward ages 5-13, anyone can participate. Each program is unique to the park hosting the program, but all share common components. Children need to engage in activities that help them to learn about the park they are in, provide some service for the park, and attend a ranger presentation.

In Utah, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Cedar Breaks, Dinosaur National Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Golden Spike National Historic Site, Parashant-Grand Canyon, Rainbow Bridge, and Zion offer various forms of these programs. A slightly less serious commitment are the various ranger led programs available at most national and state parks. These vary in their topics, the target ages, and the activities. They can include everything from listening to a presentation in a museum to a several hour hike through interesting environments to star gazing late at night and everything in between. These programs are generally free to the public and may not even require reservations. Visitors can often get into these programs on the day of their visit.

Many parks also offer more serious classes through partner organizations that work in the parks. In Zion, the Zion Natural History Association offers classes through their Zion Canyon Field Institute on everything from geology and botany to photography and painting.

Prices range from around $45 from a short, guided hike to $425 for a day long custom adventure. For more information visit their website as it is often too late to register for these types of classes on the day they start. https://zionpark.org/ There are a variety of summer camps that include components about the local environment. The Color Country Camp is the longest running one that is exclusively focused on nature and outdoor activities including kayaking, biking, archery, and photography. Generally

offered in the early summer once school lets out, this camp was established by Sandy Ferrell, a local principal at Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School and former high school biology teacher. Other partners in the program include the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, and Washington County school district and the instructors, making up an amazing roster of experts in fields ranging from biology to archeology. This camp is accepting applications now so it is the perfect time to check them out. http://ccnrcamp.org/ More formal nature education programs are offered by Dixie State University, Southern Utah University and UNLV in partnership with the national parks.

Formally established this past fall with a major grant to Dixie State, the Mojave Diverse Outdoor Leadership Institute provides scholarships to high school and college students to take courses that provide them with an appreciation of local public lands and teach them skills that could make them competitive for paid internships with the parks, Bureau of Land Management, and other federal and state public land agencies. Students are typically recruited through their schools, but there are plans to expand recruiting as the program grows. These same universities offer fantastic programs for degree and non-degree seeking students interested in learning more about the local environment. Visit each university’s website to see all of the courses offered.

Often the public forgets that these schools allow locals to take a class. Tuition is

pro-rated for individual classes, but they may require you to take basic classes before you are allowed to enroll in more advanced ones.

Lastly, there are fantastic programs geared toward retired adults. A great example of this is the Institute for Continued Learning at Dixie State University. There are a variety of courses offered through the program including a hiking class.

The appeal of this program is that it is local, taught by amazing and experienced instructors, and the program only costs $45/year for as many classes as you want to take (some classes have a small fee attached to them to cover expenses such as access to computers with specific software). offer community education classes as do most of the cities and counties in the area.

In addition to these programs offered by our local public institutions, there are a variety of private businesses that offer programs – some of them at prices that are very competitive. Rock climbing, canyoneering, caving, mountain biking, skiing, deserteering, and zip-lining classes and activities are offered by businesses in St. George, Springdale, and many other towns in the area. Many of the instructors also throw in a little education about the local geology of the area as a bonus.

Take advantage of where we live, get out there, and learn something about this amazing place we call home. The opportunities are endless and the location couldn’t be more perfect.​V

Wide or Narrow Stances

P

lacement of the feet while swinging a golf club is critical to a repeatable swing. Width of the feet varies among players and sometimes is contrary to the norm “shoulder width apart.” The main purpose of the stance is to have stability and balance while swinging between 30-100+ mph. Without balance, the club can not be delivered back to the ball consistently. Without stability, the club cannot have enough speed to impart the needed force in the correct direction.

Wide Stance

The current trend for young, powerful golfers is to take a much wider stance than you used to see. This creates torque (tension) between the upper and lower body in the backswing, while also creating a wider swing arc. The downswing starts when muscles, at the peak of being stretched, explode back – like stretching a rubber band and then letting go. This is powerful and adds distance. The keys are in the ability to transfer weight from the back foot to the front foot while using muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility so muscles spring back in proper sequence. However, as bodies age, muscles lose elasticity and the body loses the ability to remain balanced. So if a player loses balance during the swing, a wide stance may help for solid hits but distance may suffer if they lack the strength to transfer weight correctly.

Narrow Stance

Many see a smaller swing foundation as an instant way to be unstable and sure way to lose balance and distance. However, with a smaller stance, the body can rotate around the spine using centripetal and centrifugal forces to create club-head speed. The keys with this stance are a shorter swing length with the arms and not overturning the hips.

With the feet closer together, the body achieves faster rotational velocity of the hips rotating around the spine. Transferring weight is easier to do when feet are closer together, making a swing more compact, efficient, and powerful with less stress on body parts.

Both types of stances can work, so deciding which stance is better for you will depend on your flexibility, range of motion for the upper and lower body, your strength, and your ability to remain balanced throughout the swing.

Dixie Watercolor Society Breaking New Ground with an Age-Old Medium

hrough an ever-expanding array of outreach programs, the Dixie Watercolor Society is dedicated to sharing the joy of transparent watercolor with the community.

The group hosts three educational workshops per year, each led by an accomplished watercolor artist from the region. “They love coming to St. George because it’s so beautiful,” DWS president Daphne Schroth says.

These sessions have played a pivotal role in the development of DWS and raised the group’s profile within the local arts community. Workshops are open to the public (though registration costs are higher for nonmembers). “We invite the community to take part,” says Dick Rose, one of the founding members and a former president of DWS. “It’s a very well-organized art group [that] caters to everybody.”

Rose says that DWS gains about five new members at every workshop. The next one is scheduled for May 12-14 and will be led by Carl Purcell of Manti, Utah.

Monthly meetings demonstrate new ideas in watercolor, while providing insight on different artists and how they work. Schroth and the nine-person board organize an annual retreat, plus competitive shows every spring and fall. Additionally, DWS holds critique groups and plein air painting field trips on a regular basis. “It’s just a fun thing to do—go to someplace like Zion and spend two or three hours outside, painting a scene as you see it,” Rose says.

Alisha Burton, founder of Art on Main and former chair of the St. George Arts Commission, says that DWS has been the most consistently active arts group in southern Utah over the past decade.

The current membership of about 60 ranges from hobbyists to accomplished amateurs to professional artists, like renowned portrait painter L’Deane Trueblood

and Roland Lee, who was recognized by the governor for his contributions to Utah’s arts in 2014. Works by DWS artists can be found in numerous homes and businesses around St. George, Schroth says.

Since many members are seasonal residents of St. George, the group doesn’t meet over the summer. Membership dues are $35 per year, or $25 for students.

DWS was incorporated as a 501(c)(7) nonprofit in 2001 but is now in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3), making all donations tax-deductible and grant funding more readily available. “It’s part of the growth process as we are becoming more visible in the community,” says Schroth. “We’re very self-sustainable, but going into the future, if we need advertising, supplies, or equipment, we’ll apply for grants.”

The City of St. George has supported DWS with an annual contribution for the past three years. Schroth says that their 2015/16 funding will go towards organizing the workshops and compensating the presenting artists for their time and expertise.

In addition to education and outreach, the artists of DWS have sold and displayed their work at various galleries and shows throughout the years, but lacked a venue of their own—until now.

Through a partnership with Arts to Zion, DWS recently acquired permanent gallery space in St. George’s historic arts district.

Everyone is invited to the grand opening event on May 5. “That’s not only new to the area, but I don’t know that there’s another one in this whole state,” says Lee. “Very few galleries on a national basis just deal with watercolor.”

Rose says that the uniqueness of watercolor is what draws people to DWS. Its use as a fine art form dates back to the Renaissance. In transparent watercolor, the artist doesn’t use white, black, or opaque paints, instead applying a series of glazes to build up the color.

St. George art patrons have long held an appreciation for the technique not found in many other areas. Over the last halfcentury, the community has embraced those working and educating in watercolor. Local artists have sold many watercolor paintings. “People accept it, and appreciate the skill level that’s

required to use that particular medium,” says Lee. “I hope that the gallery will continue the legacy that we have here of being a watercolor community and show the rest of the world that we’re at the forefront of moving forward with that medium. Not Your Average Cowboy Mike Henrie & Horses

H

orses have been an invaluable part of our southern Utah culture since the days of those early vaqueros and pioneer cattle ranchers. Ever since, they’ve played a colorful part in our imagining and experience of this rugged western territory. We have such expectations of horses – they’re so large and glorious, with the power to draw us in.

That doesn’t mean everyone treats them equally or knows them well.

Enter Mike Henrie, a cowboy with a different perspective on what it means to sit in the saddle.

Born in Kentucky, land of the thoroughbred, his family came to Utah where he grew up on a cattle ranch working 10 - 12 hours a day. Unlike surrounding ranches, his family took on retired racehorses and gave them a second chance as ranch mounts. Growing out of that experience, Mike developed an understanding of how devoted and willing a horse is to please – if treated right.

“So often we get in their way, we take a natural animal and make it into a tool,” Mike muses. “We feel like we have to be in control instead of taking a leap of faith and gaining their trust.”

Now living in Kanab, Utah and operating the outdoor guided tour operation Kanab Western Adventures, Mike also offers horsemanship clinics and some private training. “I’m not going to teach people how to try and muscle a horse around and force them to behave,” he explains. “You aren’t going to win that battle, at least not for long, when you’re dealing with a 1,000 to 1,200-pound animal. You can go pulling on their mouth, the most tender spot in their body, or try pulling, kicking and spurring and it won’t be a happy relationship with the animal. Instead, you can be willing to let

them learn and work together. Learn to ask certain things of the horse; they want to oblige.”

Horses possess a natural empathy and are curious; Mike believes people can re-train their horses and learn with them. His six year old niece rides a horse given to Mike because it was “panicky” and “couldn’t be ridden.” Over the years, he has started over 184 two-year-olds with great success. “It’s all understandable when you just take your ego out of the equation and realize that the horse is thinking ‘what do you want me to do?’”

“It breaks my heart to meet someone who has become afraid of riding, even though they still badly want to be riding – think of all the satisfaction and happiness they are missing out on because they just don’t understand how to get past their impasse, how to ride in a spirit of trust.”

Another Horse-Whisperer? I prefer to think of him as our Gentle Cowboy with a ton of smarts. V

With the saying that “frustration begins when knowledge ends,” as his motto, Mike breaks through that impasse with his training process and helps both horse and rider. Re-training the people is harder work than helping the horses. In his estimation, over 90% of the horses are suffering from human issues that are solvable. “Many horses live in fear, and that doesn’t lead to a cooperative relationship because a horse can sense any iota of fear in the rider.” Relinquishing personal pride and taking the time to recognize the horse’s body language is a necessary first step in his process of re-education. He asks new clients to work with their horse simply grooming, bridling, touching, watching – being around the horse getting to know it better and developing a bond before mounting. “I’d say most people don’t even bridle their horse correctly, and it’s the little things that build trust.”

The horse wants to take care of you; as you learn to respect its natural movement and balance, and the way it tries to express itself, you are entering into a new and different relationship with the horse.

Proving the extent of his belief in this, Mike also teaches bridle-less riding to open-minded clients. Sitting on his mare, Mike shows how he uses a weight shift and his feet to effortlessly guide his horse to do anything asked in any gait, on any terrain. I watched Mike and Cookie leap up a bank beside the Paria river and do sweet figure 8’s without his hands ever touching her reins. It is not just a show-off training ring trick. In one of his classes, a client who has just spent the week working with him lopes around the ring with an enormous smile on her face and her arms proudly held out from her sides; there was no bridle on the easy-going relaxed horse.

Just a week before, she had come to Mike saying she feared that she had lost her courage to ever ride again.

It is a progressive method, but as this concept of natural horsemanship grows

Two-day and full week clinics are available; classes are limited to 7 - 8 people only. Each clinic varies according to the expectations, experience, and issues of the attendees. Private classes and clinics are also available, as is stabling. Ground work, riding exercises, and “refinement training” are part of the clinic, as well as Mike’s philosophical discourse on “the bond” and, when appropriate, training in bridle-less riding.

arch 19, 2016 marked the date for one of the most challenging races on the planet. The Las Vegas Spartan Race was held in Mesquite NV / Hafen Ranch Littlefield Arizona and it was a tough one. 85 degrees for nine miles, massive obstacles, and sand dunes that felt like two steps forward and one step

back were enough to even give the elite racers a “run for their money.�

Fitness and adventure are without a doubt a big part of our culture here in the west which is why it is no surprise that over 4,500 people participated in the race and nearly 2,000 spectators came. But what

is one race a year good for with no way to prepare for it? Awesome Adventures and Results by Design were asking the same question and came up with a solution that will have any athelete prepared and ready by the time the next race comes to town.

Good Customer Service isn’t

hile hurrying off to work one morning, Beverly, an executive assistant, pulled into a fast food drive-thru. When asked what she wanted to order, she requested, “iced tea with cut lemon.” The clerk replied immediately, “We ain’t got no cut lemons!” Shocked by such rudeness, Beverly asked politely, “Can you cut some?” The clerk’s abrasive reply was, “It’s not my job and the guy that does it ain’t in yet!”

In a recent customer satisfaction survey by the University of Michigan, two of the reasons cited for poor service were complacency and lack of training. For example: Let’s say that the reason the clerk was unable to give his customer cut lemons was because he was short staffed with the line at the drive-thru quickly getting out of control and he knew he didn’t have time to cut lemons.

Had he worked for a company who

focused on providing a superior form of service and therefore ensured all employees had the right training, his more appropriate answer to Beverly might have been, “I’m sorry for the inconvenience, Miss. We’re out of lemons right now. It doesn’t happen very often and we do apologize.”

If an employee doesn’t have the right skills to deliver customer service in an ordinary everyday situation, can you imagine what will happen in the case of a difficult incident or an irate customer? The chances of resolving the situation and/or complaint will be near impossible.

In this global economy customers are more savvy, more informed, and have more choices than ever before. They will do business with the companies that give them better service. The competitive edge will ultimately go to

Right now, tourism is high and we’re in good times. Companies that believe that customers are a “dime a dozen” in these times very often make the mistake of believing their customers are expendable.

There is not one company that can choose to ignore any possibility now or in the future of a downturn in the economy due to local or international factors. The key to winning customers will be to consistently deliver superior service. This ultimately translates into loyalty as a critical factor to retaining customers and tourists. When there are difficult times, companies who focus on satisfying customer needs, wants, and expectations will be the ones that survive. After all, good customer service isn’t compulsory, but then neither is survival! V

Do You Really Know What That Means?

ost of us trust what we are buying from the grocery store because of what we see on the label.

Pure! Light! Virgin! And possibly the most overused and misunderstood term, Extra Virgin.

Take a look right now in your pantry and what do you see? An olive oil in a clear plastic container that says, “Extra Virgin,” “Imported,” or “From Italy?” How long has it been there? How long was it on the shelves before it even got to your house?

Do you know?

So what do you know about olive oil?

Well, you might know that olives are a fruit. Imagine that you have a fruit juice that has been kept in your home oxidizing (oxidizing definition- undergo a change; become different in essence; losing one's or its original nature) for more than a year?

Would you drink it? I think not.

Let’s start with the basics. 2016 is a great time to get healthy and fit and live the life you’ve wanted. You’ve started to get out more and get active; you’ve changed your diet to more clean eating because you want to feel your best. Now you need to

know how one simple thing can enhance not only your food flavors, but boost your health benefits.

Extra virgin olive oil. No, not the stuff you buy off the shelves with a fancy name claiming to be from Italy. True, extra virgin, fresh cold pressed olive oil. One that you can smell and taste the notes like a fine wine (without the aging). Olive oil with the name of the type of olive on the bottle, one where you know when and where it was grown and crushed. A true extra virgin olive oil. Have you ever experienced such a thing?

Extra virgin olive oil can change your life in many different ways. For example, it can make a huge improvement in your cholesterol levels. Extra virgin olive oil is well known to help reduce the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol in your blood. It also helps with diabetes by helping to lower blood sugar. A good quality olive oil used in your daily diet can even help with lowering your certain risks of heart disease by up to 30%. Just one simple thing that you probably already use every day. But are you using the right olive oil?

Global media has recently highlighted an enormous scandal involving so called “extra virgin olive oil” and the “food mafia.” Is what I buy real? Is it diluted, refined, deodorized, or blended with any other oils? How can we know for sure the product we consume is what it says it is?

First, buy your olive oil from a trusted source. Your supplier should be able to tell you some details about the product beyond calling it extra virgin. Most specialty stores that carry olive oil allow and encourage sampling. Taste your olive oils whenever possible before purchasing.

Olive Oil Tasting Olive oil comes in many different varieties and three different flavor profiles: mild, medium and robust.

Mild olive oil is usually on the “lighter” side, creamy, sometimes with a note of fruit, berries, and grass.

Medium olive oil is slightly more pungent. This olive oil type tends to be the most popular for all around cooking and salad dressings.

Piña Colada Green Smoothie

Robust olive oil is typically the highest in polyphenols.

Polyphenols are essentially the anti-oxidants you get from the fruit. The higher the polyphenols, the stronger the peppery finish and the higher the smoke point for cooking.

Pour just enough olive oil in the cup to get a small taste of the oil, warm the cup in your hands and give it a taste.

What “notes” do you pick up? Green apple? Artichoke?

Grasses, flowers, or maybe some fruit?

Serves 4-5 Ingredients: 1 13.5 ounce can of coconut milk 1 banana 1 16 ounce bag of frozen pineapple 3 tablespoons of Redstone Olive Oil’s coconut balsamic 1 tablespoon of Redstone Olive Oil’s robust Extra Virgin Olive oil 1 Cup fresh cleaned spinach 2-3 fresh cleaned kale leaves Coconut flakes for garnish Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and frothy. Garnish with pineapple wedge and fresh coconut flakes. Enjoy!

Multinational food conglomerates brand their blended, questionable olive oil products as “extra virgin” in the US because they can. Look closely at their labels. Most labels’ fine print references which countries (more than one and it's obviously blended) the oil comes from. If one country is in the northern hemisphere and another country referenced is from the southern hemisphere, much of this product has already been around a long time. Compare products directly or seek the advice of a specialty retail store. Educate yourself by reading, and better yet, sampling. This is the only way to truly know what you are getting. The difference between so called extra virgin global branded olive oils and specialty store or other small batch olive oils is extremely apparent when you compare.

rom Feb 12-21, the St. George Area Parade of Homes offered visitors an exclusive peek inside 28 spectacular homes in St. George, Washington, Ivins, and Hurricane that showcased the latest and best in custom architecture and design. Homes are for sale as is, or can be built to suit the buyer’s unique taste.

The self-guided tour has grown exponentially over the past 26 years, with more than 30,000 people participating in 2015.

The Parade of Homes is organized by the Southern Utah Home Builders Association, a coalition of 470 construction-related businesses in Washington, Kane, and San Juan counties. A portion of the proceeds support community initiatives, such as the renovation of St. George’s SwitchPoint homeless center and construction of the Doctors Volunteer Clinic. The tour also assists in raising funds for SUHBA scholarships, which are awarded annually to students pursuing degrees and professions in the building field.

Racing at the Ridge Top Complex

lackrock Motorsports revved their engines for another exhilarating weekend of drag racing at the Ridge Top Complex overlooking downtown St. George on March 12 and 13. The competition featured over 150 racers not only from the area, but northern Utah, Colorado, Nevada, and even Canada as well.

With support from the community, Blackrock Motorsports was created in 2013 to bring back the good old days of organized amateur drag racing in Dixie, before the High Country Raceway’s 40-year run came to an end in the early 2000s. “We intend to continue to promote safe and legal means for those gearheads that want to get their need for speed met,” co-founder Jason Hall says.

Hall and the team behind Blackrock Motorsports are committed to keeping their races affordable and family-friendly. The entry fee is $25, with an optional $25 extra buy-in to compete for cash prizes. Spectator admission is $5 per person; kids 12 and under get in for free.

Anyone with a driver’s license and a running vehicle is welcome, including motorcycles, ATVs, and UTVs. “There is no car too slow and no skill level turned away,” Hall says. “This is a very friendly way to participate in motorsports in a safe manner.” photo courtesy of Blackrock Motorsports

DSU Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show and Sale

D

ixie State University’s Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show and Sale provides professional artists with a venue to display their best works in front of academics, critics, and potential buyers. It also serves as a fundraiser, with 35% of all purchase prices benefiting the Sears Art Museum Gallery on campus. A southern Utah tradition, the event is the largest of its kind in the region, curator Kathy Cieslewicz says.

The invitational opened over Presidents Day weekend with an artist symposium, gala, and pre-sale dinner on February 12. Artworks remained on public display through March 27.

The 29th annual exhibit featured 247 pieces by 130 artists from Utah and surrounding states. Cedar City-based painter Arlene Braithwaite won the grand prize with her pastel “Canyon Dawn.” Honors were also given to the top works in a variety of categories, including bronze, oil, and mixed media. “The representational art ranges greatly, from trompe l’oeil to very abstracted styles,” Cieslewicz says. “There is something for everyone.”

Mesquite – Treasuring Senior Moments

his is the 15th year of the Mesquite Senior Games, a great opportunity for those over 50 to compete in a variety of athletic events against same age peers. The Mesquite Senior Games is a non-profit organization funded completely through donors and registration/event fees. The events this year are sponsored by The City of Mesquite, Hidden Valley Ranch, Sun City Mesquite, Virgin River Casino, and the Virgin Valley High School/Clark County School District and include basketball skills, long drive, softball, tennis, bicycling, target pistol, bocce ball, bridge, pickleball, bowling, and track and field / weight throws.

The games started in 2002 following an outreach from the Nevada State Games in Las Vegas to communities throughout the state. David Pierson was the first chairman and Frank Pati vice chairman. Frank Pati went on to become Chairman, and in 2012 at the age of 78, received the first Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year award. Mark Weir, Mayor of Mesquite at the time, summed up Mr.Pati’s contributions thusly: “Mesquite Senior Games started humbly with a 50+ softball tournament 18 years ago and progressed into the Mesquite Senior Games in 2002. Frank has singlehandedly brought teams from 42 states to participate in a number of Senior Games events each year. Through his vision, commitment, and tenacity, the program continues to grow and has brought hundreds of senior athletes to our community, many who have made Mesquite their home. The Mesquite Senior Games contribute to the economic vitality and tourism of Mesquite. Frank Pati is ‘the Mesquite Senior Games’.”

“You would be hard pressed to find a more beloved and revered man than Frank Pati,” wrote Bryan Dangerfield, former Director of Athletics & Leisure Services of Mesquite. He continued, “In the past two decades, Frank has not only brought distinction to Mesquite and the state of Nevada through his senior softball tournaments and the Mesquite Senior Games, he has changed the lives of many seniors in giving them a vehicle to stay active and to develop new friendships.”

Brady was born March 15, 1921 in Santa Clara to Earnest and Julia Reber Walker. The oldest of six children (four boys and two girls), he spent his early years in Mesquite and Bunkerville, and graduated from Virgin Valley High School in 1939. At an early age Brady became interested in track and field, using a round rock as a shot put, a small wagon wheel as a discus, and a long pointed limb of a tree as a javelin. He won high school honors in both basketball and track and field, earning scholarships for 18 different universities. He chose BYU Provo.

During his only furlough, he returned to Provo, Utah and married his sweetheart, Olive Elaine Tucker, in 1943. Later their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake temple. They had 57 wonderful years together and parented two children – a boy and a girl.

After the war, Brady resumed his studies and athletic career, often being the high point man of BYU Basketball team. At one Utah State track meet, he won four events – shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw, earning him the J. Edwin Stein Award for all-round athletic achievement in both 1946 and 1947. In 1976 he was inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame. After graduating, Brady was drafted. Walker was selected in the 1948 BAA Draft by the Providence Steamrollers, and debuted Nov 4,1948. He went on to play for the Boston Celtics and Baltimore Bullets in his four-year BAA/NBA career, which was ended by a serious leg injury.

In 1989 Brady became aware of Senior Olympic Games and other senior games in the states around him. His interest was piqued; he became an avid participant in the games, and it almost goes without saying, he medaled once again in shot put, javelin, and high jump.

As we age, we are graced with a time in our lives where we have the opportunity to revive old talents or simply do those things we have always wanted to do. The Senior Games is one of those opportunities to push ourselves just a little more, discover our endless potential, and have fun to boot. Thank you to all those that give so willingly to the community and make the Mesquite Senior Games happen. To those participating – good luck, and we appreciate your continued support. V

Wolf Creek and Mesquite Golf Attract World Class Talent

t is not a secret that Mesquite has become a prime destination for quality golf and an excellent quality of life along with beautiful views and magnificent sunsets. We who live in Mesquite know how important golf is to our community and that it is one of the central keys to our economy. Generally speaking, with golf course design and golf course play throughout the USA being in somewhat of a stagnant state, Mesquite is fortunate to have the golfing options available with all of our quality courses along with the commitment given to each. Without this solid commitment to golf in our community, our economy – and all the contributory industries such as real estate – would not have the strength it currently maintains.

Last fall, Mesquite’s own Wolf Creek Golf Club appeared to gain some renewed national exposure due to the clothing manufacturer Under Armour. Under Armour is one of the elite sports clothing lines in the world, and their choice for displaying their new golf product

line features the world’s number one golfer in the world*, Jordan Spieth, and fellow PGA tour player Gary Woodland. Under Armour also chose our own Wolf Creek Golf Club to use as the background for their new marketing campaign with Spieth.

Hosting Under Armour and their large film crew along with the number one golfer in the world was no easy task. This, coupled with having over 100 players playing the golf course each day during filming required some serious logistics and tight lips by the Wolf Creek staff. General Manager Darren Stanek and Director of Golf Trent Chapman had their hands full pushing all the levers and directing traffic, not only to keep their paying customers happy, but also keeping customers uninformed of the situation. This charade – along with perfect timing – was critical for the operation to help avoid chaos. The majority of the golfers playing Wolf Creek at the time were mostly in the dark about what was happening while playing their round of golf. This was the case up until the end of the second day when some of the inquisitive players were swearing they saw Jordan Spieth on the 18th hole.

The photo shoot was pulled off with near flawless execution and very few complications were noted. The results of this photo shoot featuring Wolf Creek Golf Club and Jordan Spieth are being used in advertisements produced by Under Armour for their new golf shoes and apparel, and were first presented after the 2016 Masters Tournament.

If Jordan Spieth hanging around Wolf Creek last fall was not enough excitement for Mesquite Golf, in February, Wolf Creek and the city of Mesquite hosted LPGA Tour star and Sports Illustrated Model Natalie Gulbis for two days while filming “18 holes with Natalie Gulbis and Jimmy Hanlin.”

The weather conditions for Natalie’s two day event were not as cooperative as they were for the Under Armour shoot, as the winds howled up to 40 mph during both days of shooting. The less than ideal weather conditions did not dull the excitement for the staff at Wolf Creek though, as Natalie roamed the shop freely looking for the latest women’s clothing. She was as nice in person as she appears on TV. The TV program featuring Natalie Gulbis and Wolf Creek Golf Club will air the 3rd week in May. As golfers living in Mesquite, we should all feel fortunate and blessed to have such a wide variety of golf courses at our disposal. This is the case not only for our recreation but for several part time jobs and livelihoods as well. The bottom line is that the fabric of this community relies heavily on a very strong commitment to golf. Go computer, put down that cell phone, get off that couch. Life is too short to be spent inside doing things you don’t really want to do. It is too short to spend it in a mass of depression, despondency, and discouragement. Life was meant to be enjoyed, and nature was created to make life enjoyable.

Are you convinced? If not, let me assure you that by the time you realize just what lies in store for you right outside your door, you won’t waste another day without spending at least a little time soaking up some of that desert southwest fresh air and sunshine.

ello friends. Are you beat, bored, broken-down? Are you faint, fatigued, fed up? Were you sleepy at your last soiree? Are you overburdened, overloaded, overtaxed? Did you poop out at your last party? Are your muscles a mass of gelatinous mush? Is your smile turned upside down in a perpetual frown?

If so, you have a problem. You’re in a pickle. You’ve got yourself a predicament.

And this problem, this pickle, this predicament can lead to other muddled messes like increased cynicism, irritability, sarcasm, bitterness, and pessimism. It can put your family and friends in a dither. It can vex your boss. In short, it can make your life a wretched waste of woebegon days.

But there is an answer to your problem.

There is a cure for your pickle. There is a fix for your predicament. And it won’t cost you an arm or even a leg. You don’t have to acquire pre-approval. There are no co-pays or preferred providers, and you don’t need to worry about early refills.

There are no appointments to keep. There are no bureaucratic regulatory committees to muddy the waters. In fact, the waters are most often clean and clear.

So what is the cure, the answer, the fix?

It can be found in those words spoken by mothers and grandmothers since the beginning of time: “Go outside and play.

I must, however, add a caution here. All of this nature stuff – playing outside, getting good and tired – could possibly lead to a few issues that may be a little confusing.

There may be periods of technology withdrawals, stress disengagement, and boredom relinquishment replaced by cycles of star-gazing, taking long walks, and cloud-watching. Periods of overburden and overload may be replaced by cycles of contentment and cooperation. You may experience spontaneous euphoria, unplanned bliss,

You don’t need to know the names of the constellations to enjoy the night sky, but after spending a few nights star-gazing you might want to learn more.

So if you’re fed up with fatigue, tired of party-pooping, and baffled with boredom, do something about it. Slather on that sunscreen. Don the floppy hat. Secure those shades. Lace up your hiking boots. Open your umbrella. Turn off the electronics. Unlatch your front door. Walk out your back door. Look up. Look down.

Smile. Laugh. Get physical. In other words, “Go outside and play. And don’t come back inside until you’re good and tired!” V

When was the last time you enjoyed the beauty of a morning sunrise? Okay, so it would be easier if the sunrise happened around noon, but making the effort to get out of bed early enough to drink in the golden liquid droplets of the first rays of morning will definitely invigorate your tired mind.

And what about the sunset? Did you remember that nature has a remarkable way of adding an exclamation point to the end of each day? There is something about watching the glowing sun slowly sink behind the horizon trailing shards of light through the clouds and dyeing the sky with bright oranges, deep reds, calm pinks, and finally fading into inky blues as darkness takes over that fills a soul with gratitude and wonder.

Dutch Oven Cooking

R

ecently, Denene and David Torgenson from Ultimate Dutch Oven gave a demonstration at the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum, showing their knowledge and love of Dutch Oven cooking. The recipe she demonstrated was “Mountain Omelette,” from page 83 of her own cookbook for the Ultimate Dutch Oven. The oven itself was invented by her father, Dent Sorenson, and has a unique design that lets you cook your bread while cooking the main meal.

Recipe for “Mountain Omelette” Ingredients: 1 to 2 pounds sausage 1/2 cup peppers (red or green - your choice) 1/2 cup onion 1 cup mushrooms - or to your liking 1 cup shredded cheese 1 dozen eggs (for a large crowd use 18 eggs) Pillsbury cinnamon rolls

Directions: Spray your Dutch Oven with any cooking spray (bottom & sides).

Add meat, onion, and bell pepper. For cooking on the propane stove, use no briquettes. If you cook with briquettes, use 12 to 16 on the bottom until your meat is brown and vegetables are soft.

Use the Enhancement Pack (griddle & high dome lid) for your lid on the Dutch oven. Spray the griddle with cooking spray and place your Pillsbury cinnamon rolls around, with each roll touching one another. Place the Enhancement lid over the cinnamon rolls and now place about 12 briquettes on the lid.

Lift the Enhancement Pack (griddle and lid) to drain all but a few tablespoons of grease from the mixture in your oven. Add the mushrooms and stir them into the mixture. Turn your propane oven to low (or remove 7 to 8 briquettes from the bottom of the oven) to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until mushroom are soft.

Place your Enhancement Pack with the cinnamon rolls back on the oven to let the oven heat back up before adding your eggs.

Break eggs in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour beaten eggs evenly over mixture and then place the Enhancement Pack back on oven. Let your omelette cook slowly and your rolls will cook at the same time.

When the omelette pulls from the sides of your oven, add cheese and let melt. When your cinnamon rolls are firm, remove from the oven and set aside to cool and then add icing. Place your small lid on the oven and let your omelette finish cooking.

know you. You are a skeptic. You want proof. You want to see the research and evaluate it yourself and I applaud you for that. I am a skeptic too. Therefore, I am going to include some sources for this article. The following health and fitness myths persist in spite of the efforts of scientists, researchers and wellness professionals:

1. You need to eat meat to stay healthy and for adequate protein intakes No you don’t. If that were the case, I would be dead and I don’t feel dead. I’m typing this article aren’t I? I get adequate protein and seem to be doing fairly well considering I have been vegetarian and then vegan for 20+ years. I’m sharing the following personal statistics for science.

I am 63 years of age, about 5 feet tall

(unfortunately), weigh about 107 lbs, and have about 22% body fat. That means my body consists of about 23.5 lbs of fat and 83.5 lbs of lean body mass (including muscle). I have worn a size 3 for as long as I can remember. I can still improve. I’m in the fitness range but not athletic. I still have a six pack and wear the same size that I wore in high school and hey, I’m not dead yet, just saying.

2. Abdominal exercises will give you a flat stomach and stronger core

No they won’t. The only way to get a flat stomach is to reduce fat around the midsection. This can be accomplished by doing cardio and interval exercise to burn calories, strength training to increase metabolism, and by following a proper (plant based) diet. Abdominal exercises will help to build muscle in your midsection, but you will never see the muscle definition unless the fat in this area is stripped away. Many people focus on crunches, which are not the most effective

3. You should focus your attention on “problem areas” when exercising

Nope. While spot reduction is a great concept, and would be very convenient if it worked, it is usually promoted by someone wanting to sell you an overpriced piece of exercise equipment or by someone not aware of the benefits of functional training.

Most exercise machines place your joints in a fixed position and work your muscles in isolation, focusing on one specific area. This doesn’t translate into real life movements.

4. I am too old to start exercising

The grave was estimated to be 9500 years old. In addition, archeologists in Israel discovered a 12,000 year old grave which

held the body of a man holding a dog.

Some scientists even believe dogs were domesticated 18,000-32,000 years ago.

Maybe, since we've been evolving with them for thousands of years, we are more connected than we think.

Recently, scientists, psychologists and research companies have all begun to study the relationship between humans and pets and the impact they have on our health.

Not only are cats just fun, statistics say that if you are a cat owner your risk of heart attack and surviving a heart attack are greatly reduced. In a 20-year study researchers found that people that had never owned a cat were 40% more likely to have a heart attack. In other studies researchers have found that cat owners have fewer strokes.

Dogs and Cats Lower Blood Pressure One of the best studies conducted so far on the effects of pets and their people's blood pressure was done by Dr. Karen Allen, Ph.D. Dr. Allen decided to get 48 stressed out stockbrokers in New York City together who did not have pets and study them. All of the stockbrokers had high blood pressure and were all given the same medication to lower their blood pressure. Then some of them got pets.

Twenty-four of the group elected to adopt pets, leaving the other 24 as the control group. What Dr. Allen found was that

the group with pets maintained much more stable blood pressure, especially in stressful situations.

None of them know why this is the case, exactly, but say that it could be due to the calming effect cats have on us. I think it's because they have magical powers.

In another study, researchers tested 240 married couples and found that the pet owners in the group had consistently lower blood pressure and heart rates.

And, we can’t leave dogs out of the mix.

Other studies have shown dogs are just as effective in reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke. One study found that dog owners have a much better survival rate within the first year after a heart attack.

Scientists find that petting your cat or playing with your dog releases serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins in the brain. These chemicals cause us to have feelings of happiness and of feeling bonded. In addition, enjoying time with our pet reduces the amount of cortisol, a chemical that is released in response to stress, produced in our brain.

It's a fact; pets can have a profound impact on our health and overall wellbeing. Pet owners already know that having a beloved pet around makes life more fun, interesting, and enjoyable. Now science is showing that they can also be healthy. What we do through the Women’s Defensive Weaponry Club is teach women to defend themselves with or without a weapon and to become aware of their surroundings. Mental preparation is crucial – awareness development, personal empowerment, and the personal safety zone are important parts of our teachings.

We instruct how to safely handle, shoot, and conceal a firearm (CCW permitted) and to use personal self-defense or handto-hand contact, not by traditional means, but by basic, easy to grasp maneuvers.

These methods are meant to ward off an attacker, and give someone time to get away from the danger, or get to a firearm or other form of weaponry.

Statistics indicate that one in four women will be the victim of an attack in their lifetime. Your daughters, granddaughters, and other family members, and the often targeted segment of young women going off to college, should all have basic knowledge of self-defense.

Our purpose is for women to gain confidence in learning to protect themselves, so we provide a more comfortable environment with women teaching women. Men might be excellent instructors, however many women have been abused or violated and are more comfortable learning from our female instructors. Through our informative and educational classroom instruction, hand-to-hand workshops, and working with women on the firing line, they calm down, learn quickly, and find empowerment. It’s quite rewarding for all.

We provide pistol handling and training (including various forms of accessories) from beginners to the competent shooter, for women only or open attendance, groups or private parties, and soon we plan to offer NRA classified courses by NRA certified instructors. We have personal selfdefense or hand-to-hand contact workshops with varied levels of training and of course there’s the combined multi-business self-defense workshop which has it all.

The personal self-defense workshop for women opened participant’s eyes to the various forms of self-protection, including pistol training information and CCW permitting, shooting range guidelines, personal self-defense demonstrations, securing the home, alarm/surveillance systems, and general safe traveling pointers to survival gear and techniques to use if stranded.

he Mesquite Senior Games kicked-off with the tennis event. Twenty-six doubles teams, several from out of state, competed for the first medals at both Hafen Park and Sun City Mesquite.

In addition to the matches, players had two social events to enjoy. First was the Tennis Turkey Shoot where players tried to hit prizes with tennis balls to win the prize. The most popular item was a donated round of golf from Conestoga Golf Course. A group dinner at the 1880 Grill was the second fun event. Additional sponsors were Smith’s and Walmart.

Now for the tips: As players, we hear the need for better footwork all the time, but it really means find your optimal hitting zone. When you make those few adjustment steps to be in the right place to strike the ball, you know it. So take the time and effort to move there.

Whose point is it if your opponent hits you with the ball but then runs into the net? The point is your opponent’s. Since the ball that hit you basically stopped the point, touching the net does not matter.

The City of Mesquite Community and Senior Center will be hosting a Western Hoedown Friday, May 13. The event will consist of a barbeque dinner and line dancing from 4-6 PM. The dinner menu will consist of BBQ pulled pork, BBQ chicken, ribs, cole slaw, corn on the cob, and more. You will have a choice of two meats and three sides, plus a dessert.

Although not mandatory, western theme attire is encouraged! Bill Clark will be providing a variety of songs for your listening and dancing pleasure.

A photo booth will be provided for those that will like a small memento.

So, mosey on over to the Senior Center, put on your western attire and join us for a delicious dinner and dance. Cost: $10 per person. Ticket pre-sale starts April 4.

Beginning Line Dance

Fridays at 9 AM. This class is perfect for beginners. Dancers will learn basic dance steps and terminology. As the class progresses, week to week, more advanced dances will be incorporated into the mix. The emphasis will be on learning while dancing and having FUN! Line dance is great exercise for mind, body and spirit. Come join the fun and meet new friends.
