Dakar 2010

1st to 17th January

Volkswagen Defends “Dakar” Title With One-TwoThree Triumphant title defence in South America: Volkswagen has won the legendary Dakar Rally for the second time in succession and including 1980 for a third time. After a „showdown in blue‟ the Volkswagen duos and their TDI powered Race Touareg prototypes celebrated a one-two-three podium lockout at the finish of the toughest challenge worldwide in motorsport. In the process, Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) triumphed by only 2 minutes 12 seconds ahead of his team m ates Nas s er Al - Atti yah/T im o Gottschalk (Q/D) in a thrilling finale on the closing 202 kilometre sprint on the 14th and final rally day. Mark Miller/ Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) claimed third position. Last year‟s winners Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D) finished seventh.

at the finish of the final stage. Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen explains: “Three weeks ago a highly motivated Volkswagen team came with the goal of successfully defending the „Dakar‟ title won last year. Volkswagen has achieved something historical with this one-two-three. We are not only unbeaten in South America, we are also the only manufacturer to have won the world‟s hardest rally up to now with diesel technology. The Volkswagen drivers fought amongst themselves for victory all the way to the chequered flag – sometimes by hard but fair means. This is exactly how we imagine motorsport to be. My congratulations therefore go to every Volkswagen duo who would all have been worthy winners.”

“I‟m incredibly proud of our team. It‟s stunning what the drivers, co-drivers and the entire team have achieved on every single day of the Dakar Rally. With this one-two-three triumph Volkswagen Motorsport even surpassed its own lofty goals,” says Dr. rer. pol. h. c. Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, Member of the Board of Management at The Wolfsburg based brand therefore VOLKSWAGEN AG for procurement, remains the only manufacturer to have won the car category of the Dakar Rally with diesel power. TDI technology was already dominant in 2009 in Argentina and Chile. In addition to the efficiency of the Volk swagen Group‟s diesel direct injection technology the Race Touareg‟s reliability was the key to the 2010 “Dakar” victory: De-

spite the extreme demands the powerful 300 hp Race Touareg proved to be not only the most robust, but also the fastest vehicle: Seven of 14 possible stage victories and eleven days in the lead were credited to the four-wheel drive racers from Wolfsburg. The result of the rally kept observers and fans alike on tenterhooks up to the finish line: Carlos Sainz/Lucas C r u z, N a s s e r A l - A t t i ya h / T im o Gottschalk and Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford led in this order since the fifth Dakar Rally stage. However, at no point did any driver duo have an unassailable lead. In a strong final burst AlAttiyah/Gottschalk edged ever closer, repeatedly taking seconds from their Volkswagen team mates Sainz/Cruz and, in doing so, staged an open and hard but fair duel for the leading position. The Qatari/German duo made up ground specifically in the dune sections – which once again formed one of the “Dakar‟s” core elements – while the Spanish duo Sainz/Cruz controlled proceedings on the fast, twisty gravel sections. As varied as the fight in the overall standings was – two stage wins went to Sainz/Cruz, four to Al-Attiyah/ Gottschalk, one to Miller/Pitchford –, so challenging proved the 32nd run(Continued on page 7)

ning of the Dakar Rally: In addition to the varied stages across soft, in part powder-like sand and through towering and endless dune fields of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile there were also gravel sections and tracks through enormous boulder fields on the agenda. The multi-faceted acid test with its terrain changing several times a day, two Andes crossings, passages through the world‟s driest desert, the Atacama, as well as parts of the legendary Pampa was mastered brilliantly by the Volkswagen Race Touareg. One Race Touareg was always found in the top-three of each stage at the finish, 27 of a possible 42 top-three positions on the 14 stages went to Wolfsburg. For the new “Dakar” champions Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz a winning streak continued in front of millions of fans lining the daily stages in Argentina and Chile. As newly formed duo in the Volkswagen Race Touareg the Spanish pair remained unbeaten in their third competition together and secured a new superlative in “Dakar” history: Never before have two Spaniards won the legendary desert rally‟s automobile category. Sainz/Cruz had previously won the Rallye dos Sertões in June and July 2009 as well as the Silk Way Rally in September 2009.

From then on we put ourselves at the service of the team, as others also did for us in 2009. This is natural. First, second and third – this is an exceptional result for Volkswagen. Everybody in the squad deserved victory. Without question it is the best team in the world.” #300 – Dirk von Zitzewitz (D), codriver “The 2010 Dakar Rally was once again an exciting „Dakar‟. The enthusiasm shown by the spectators in Chile especially, however, in Argentina never ceases to amaze me. Incredible just how much you are spurred on. From the sporting point of view the „Dakar‟ did not run particularly well for Giniel and I, as we already had to bury our thoughts of victory early on, and worked for the team from then on. Even though it was technically very tough on the material, I didn‟t find this „Dakar‟ as demanding from the sporting side as 2009.”

ning the „Dakar‟. An enormous weight has fallen from my shoulders particularly as the fight for victory was extremely hard both physically and enormously exhausting mentally. I‟m incredibly happy to have achieved this goal after having been so close to victory on several occasions. Everything ran perfectly for me: My co-driver Lucas Cruz did an excellent job, from the technical side the Race Touareg ran like clockwork and the entire Volkswagen squad worked tirelessly for the win. Thank you for this.”

#303 – Lucas Cruz (E), co-driver “After so much pressure over the last few days it goes without saying that I‟m incredibly happy on the day of my first „Dakar‟ victory. I think we have beaten tough competitors and also one of the hardest „Dakar‟s‟ ever. Carlos approached his job throughout the entire event patiently, concentrated but also with great tenacity. He is a great champion, it‟s fantastic to win with him.” #305 – Mark Miller (USA), 3rd position overall “A great rally for us and for the entire Volkswagen team, which did an excellent job. It deserved to celebrate on the podium with three cars. It was small things that made the difference between winning and third place. I salute Carlos Sainz who drove almost faultless and who made the least amount of mistakes. It‟s just these small things that make the difference. My goal is to be better with the details in the future.” (Continued on page 12)

Touring in Big Bird By Merrick Paget No doubt most of you have seen the big water cooled yellow 2008 Kombi Beach named Big Bird at the various VW club runs and at the last DOVW. The vehicle is used by us for touring our wonderful state and country and following is an account of our last run to the North of Australia. The beginning of October saw us head for the North West again. This time we traveled up through the mid west and saw all the beautiful wild flowers in full bloom and stopped at a place called Coal Seam that was completely covered in wild flowers. This is where coal was first mined in WA in the late 1800s.

We continued on to Broome where we got the windscreen fixed, washed the van, clothes, stocked up on groceries etc, etc and headed to Derby. We refueled and checked road conditions then headed off up the famous Gibb River Road to Mt Barnett and then to the Manning Gorge camp site a 17 kms rough track through creek beds, soft bull dust and sand. The afternoon we arrived it was 43 degrees in the shade? This camp site has no power only an ablution block with cold water showers.

Crossing the “Famous” Pentecost River on the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys.

Heading north we stayed overnight at Mullewa where it rained and after drying out we headed NE to Yalgoo and then up the Gt Northern Highway again towards Mt Newman stopping at the Capricorn Road House for fuel (both van and us- great burgers) and The solar panels we had purchased for the van came into play here and performed well by keeping the vans auxiliary battery fully charged to run the fridge and lights during the next 4 days. A change in the weather saw us all packing up, as getting caught here when it rains on these white clay roads becomes very dangerous to impossible to traverse. The drive from Mt Barnett eastwards was extremely rough, rutted and badly in need of a decent grade, but the scenery of the ranges is breathtaking. On the van I had to drop the tyre pressures to 45psi at the start of the Gibb River Road because of the corrugations but now I had to drop them to 40psi as the rocks and corrugations Up really early and continued into got very bad. Marble Bar. After refueling at Marble We arrived at the Pentecost River and Bar where I had to fix the diesel pump covered up the opening directly in as it “threw a pulley” we headed for front of the air inlet and then began to the Gt Northern Highway and at the negotiate the crossing. The road base Shaw River crossing a passing road is made of river rocks and they are train threw up a large rock from one of about the size of footballs round and its trailers and put a hole in the windcovered in a green slime making tracscreen. tion for the vans highway tyres very difficult. then headed for Marble Bar, the hottest town in Australia to see the famous “Marble Bar” and we were not disappointed. We continued on the rough dirt road to Marble Bar but the quickly setting sun and the rutted road saw us pull over to camp out behind a hill.

- Bumper Holiday Edition -

I travelled too slow on the first attempt and got one wheel stuck between 2 rocks about half way across and I had to clear them away from the wheels, reverse with the wife pushing and then have another go this time traveling faster. Once across the only damage was the number plate, the screws just do not hold onto these new plastic bumpers too well. All the rough driving on this road saw us use more fuel than first thought and not being able to fill up at El Questro station due to a river crossing to the station being too deep and rough we headed for Wyndham to fuel up (This (Continued on page 10)

section we got 10.91l/100km) and have a few much needed cold beers. We then headed into Kununurra to a shady caravan park in the middle of town. When people asked us where we had come from and we told them we had come via the Gibb River road they all seemed amazed that we had been able to do it in the Kombi as nearly every vehicle up here is a 4x4. After staying here for several days, again stocking up the food and spending the days lazing in the park‟s pool we continued east crossing into the Northern Territory. The drive through Timber Creek and Victoria River Roadhouse area is spectacular. The ranges are majestic and all the different colours of the rock was really something. We found this area of NT more beautiful than Kakadu. NT) until we hit the South Australian border. Next night we stayed in Coober Pedy and of course had to sleep in an underground motel room. 40 kms out of Coober Pedy we ran into the dust storms that blanketed the east coast where visibility got down to about 200 metres, very eerie through this country as its very barren and flat. The van‟s ability to keep dust out was again tested here and performed well with no dust entering the inside whatsoever. This dust cloud continued all the way south to Port Augusta. That night it rained and it followed us back into WA, giving the van a well needed wash. From here we headed west and began the trek across the Nullarbor to the border, spending a night in another third world caravan park of Nundroo (definitely not recommended). Next morning Off to Darwin but decided to right turn at Pine Creek and go to Kakadu, having lunch at the lake at Jabiru was a highlight. Kakadu was very dry and large sections of the park had been burnt, the roads to most of the attractions here were badly corrugated and rough and unfortunately we could not negotiate the creek crossings due to the low rear end of the van. After a much needed cold beer or two at the famous Humpty Doo Pub we went into Darwin. After 3 days rest we set off south staying at the Elliott caravan park for the night, (not recommended) continued south stopping at Tennant Creek for fuel, food and a look around and then on to Alice Springs. A few days here doing all the tourist things then we made tracks for Uluru and the Olgas. The next day we headed to Kings Canyon for lunch and then we headed for the Quarantine check point at the border then home to Perth via Esperance, Albany, Denmark and Bridgetown. This trip saw us travel 11,380kms across 3 states in 5 weeks and averaged 9.4 l/100 with our best being 8.00 l/100. The vehicle was loaded to 2485Kgs all up weight minus occupants and during the entire trip the only trouble we had was with a number plate screw that kept falling out on the corrugations and when we crossed the Pentecost River. The van has more than proved itself to be an excellent vehicle for touring as it is easy to drive and very comfortable. We have planned our next big trip and that is to Stanthorpe in Queensland for the 2010 VW Bug In and hope to on to Erldunda, the T junction to the Rock and the Stuart catch up with other Kombi Beach owners.  Highway. Next morning we headed for Coober Pedy and put the van on cruise control at 130Kmh (the legal limit in

World Premiere in Detroit

Page 19 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds For Volkswagen this marks the beginning of an action-packed year, in which more new models will be introduced than ever before in the company‟s history. Number 1 on the spectacular list of new products for calendar year 2010 is a car based on entirely new concepts and technology, a coupe with a hybrid drive that is extremely fast and yet futuristic in its fuel economy. It has sports appeal and sharp styling yet is remarkably elegant - positioned between the Europe‟s bestselling sports car, the Scirocco, and the internationally successful CC. Its name: the New Compact Coupe. Site of its world premiere: Detroit, North American International Auto Show (January 11 to 24). Combined fuel consumption: 4.2 l/100 km* (45 mpg**)! CO2 emissions: 98 g/km! Incredible, considering its fuel economy, are its top speed of 227 km/h (141 mph) and the short 8.6 seconds it needs for the classic sprint to 100 km/ h (0-60 mph in 8.1 seconds). These values were made technically feasible by a high-tech alliance: a TSI engine (gasoline powered with 110 kW / 150 PS) that is as fuel efficient as it is sporty, an electric motor (20 kW / 27 PS) and a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) - which in the eyes of many car drivers is the best automatic in the world today. Just over a month after the debut of the most fuelefficient four-seater in the world – the Up! Lite in Los Angeles – this new concept car confirms once again that future Volkswagen hybrid vehicles will not only focus on fuel economy, but – similar to pure gasoline and diesel versions of Europe‟s most successful automobile brand – will also aim to be sporty and fun to drive. In the first half of the year, Volkswagen will launch its first hybrid model on the market under the VW label – an SUV with full-time all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the New Compact Coupe shows, both technically and visually, how Volkswagen envisions a front-wheel drive hybrid for the compact class that would be implemented when the time is right. Notes: TDI, TSI, DSG and Twincharger are registered trademarks of Volkswagen AG or other companies of the Volkswagen Group in Germany and other countries. * Fuel consumption and CO2 values per NEDC ** Fuel economy values of US label

Volkswagen Amarok

Volkswagen's Commercial Vehicle division in Hannover had one clear goal when creating the Amarok; to be the best in the market. Creating a good vehicle is a difficult challenge in and of itself, but to make life difficult for VW, the pick-up segment already has a clear benchmark -- the Toyota HiLux. Now in its seventh generation, the HiLux has a huge head start on Volkswagen. But the German company hasn't become one of the biggest brands in the world by accident. It has done so with a mix of technical savvy and hard work. Those two traits were in abundance

bers of the VW board -- over 160km of driving on some of the roughest and toughest roads in Argentina, including a stretch of Dakar Rally course (coincidently won by Volkswagen earlier this year). It's a telling sign that only a month out from the start of production, Volkswagen was still looking for ways to improve the Amarok.

Initially there will be a three-tier line-up with the base model (known simply as Amarok), Trendline and Highline covering the various demands of customers.

The basic differences will see the base model sporting plastic bumpers and cloth seats; Trendline will earn colour-coded bumpers and optional The new model is due to go on sale in leather trim; and the Highline will reSouth America and South Africa in the ceive chrome bumpers and leather first quarter of 2010, with Australia seats as standard. having to wait until the second quarter. Based on our time with the car, it may be the VW's first attempt at a one-tonne pick-up, but it certainly won't look out of place against its rivals. The steering wheel looks identical to the new Golf's, as do the air conditioning controls and stereo.
