While winter is upon us, the only thoughts we have at the moment are of a warm and sunny climate. A hot fiery fireplace will have to do for now. It certainly got us to thinking how the two – Fire & Ice – may be opposites, but often times, they can complement each other. In Issue 22, we sent out a call for your interpretation of the elements and we were wowed by your submissions. From a young age, children often have an ideal image of what love is. Movies, songs, and shows present the perfect couple, but the reality is quite different from what we see in the media. Colin Boyd Shafer, no stranger to using photography to provoke discussion of the connections people make to their city and to others, has recently embarked on a new photographic project. In INTERLOVE, he aims to show how each individual brings more than just his or her personality to a relationship. The abstract and metaphysical aspect of one’s faith has just as much impact on the how two people can coexist with each other. Shafer continues to capture the raw emotions of his subjects as they reveal the challenges and rewards of being in an interfaith relationship. With Valentine’s Day upon us, I thought it fitting to converse with him on INTERLOVE and the complex issue of love and religion.
WW: What is the purpose of INTERLOVE? CBS: In a world where hate rules the headlines – especially when it comes to religion - it is important to tell stories of love. I see Ontario as a place where most people are safe to let love rule, despite a divide in belief, and I wanted to capture this with my lens. Telling individual stories of interfaith love, that is what I am trying to do. Everyone loves a good love story.

FEATURE WW: What was the inspiration for this project? CBS: After attempting to photograph the whole world in one city with Cosmopolis Toronto - I thought about another element of diversity that has not been adequately explored – the diversity of relationships. I realized that nobody has done a project like this, exploring interfaith love through documentary portraiture, and I knew there would be powerful stories of triumph in the face of adversity that could be highlighted.
WW: How has the last project, Cosmopolis Toronto, helped you with INTERLOVE? CBS: Like Cosmopolis Toronto, INTERLOVE was successfully crowdfunded. It was great to see many repeat supporters, and people who still believe in my photography and storytelling. Over 200 people pitched in! I also have Jennifer Rodrigues, who was interning with the last project, acting as the Project Manager for this initiative. INTERLOVE is also similar in the way that social media is used to find participants. I simply couldn’t do these projects without Facebook and Twitter.
WW: Aside from the theme of interfaith relationships, how is this project different from the past projects you’ve done? CBS: Taking portraits of two people, together, requires a different process than photographing individuals. I need to connect with both participants – and make sure that I am accurately conveying both of their stories. Given the subject matter, I am consciously trying to make the photographs serious – not cheesy. These portraits are very different than your average engagement shoot! This project also happens to be in black and white – something that I think fits the concept better than colour.

WW: What is your goal for this project and how can interested people contribute? CBS: The goal of INTERLOVE is to provide a sense of belonging to anyone anywhere who has been in or is in an interfaith relationship. Many people, in other parts of the world, may feel afraid to be out about their love, and I am thankful that here in Ontario, these stories can be told safely. Ultimately we should all be able to get something from this. If two people can love, despite holding opposing beliefs, why can’t others get along? Currently we are looking for applications from anyone in Ontario in an interfaith relationship. This includes people in an intra-faith relationship (different sects of same religion), those who identify as having no faith, people in same-sex relationships, or people who identify as polyamorous.
