Dauphin takes 3-1 series lead over Ice Wolves The Dauphin Kings appear to be over a bad bout of food poisoning. The Manitoba Junior Hockey League regularseason champions, who had several players vomiting on a 800-kilometre bus trip home from La Ronge, Sask. Saturday night, inched a step closer to capturing their second ANAVET Cup with a 5-3 victory Wednesday night over the La Ronge Ice Wolves before 1,528 fans in Dauphin. The Kings, who set a franchise-high 50 wins this season, now hold a 3-1 lead in the best-ofseven series. Game 5 went Thursday night at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place. “We got it done tonight,” Kings’ GM and head coach Marlin Murray told CKDM-Dauphin. “It was a good effort by our guys. We were a bit mentally tired, I suppose, from everything we’ve been through over the last couple of days, but that was no excuse. We battled through that.” The last time the Kings won the ANAVET was back in 1983 when Barry Trotz was their captain. These days Trotz is behind the bench of the Nashville Predators, spending his summers in Vernon. Dauphin, as host, and the Ice Wolves, will both play in the Royal Bank Cup nationals, May 1-9.

A mild winter allowed the Vernon ANAF Diamondbacks to begin outdoor training in late February. They start stroking dingers and turning doubleplays for real Saturday when they face the expansion Okanagan Major Baseball League Penticton Pirates for a pair at Carmi Field. The Pirates enter the league, 20 years after the last time they had senior men’s baseball in the Peach City. “The Diamondbacks will be pitching by committee on Saturday, as work commitments will limit the options,” said Kyle Anderson. “John McInnis is expected to get the ball in Game 1.” On Sunday, the D-Backs host the Pirates for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. at Marshall Field. “Last year’s team Cy Young, Peter Ortman, will get the start in the home opener,” added Anderson. The Diamondbacks encourage the public to check out the ANAF D-Backs. Admission is free and there will be a concession. Joining Vernon and Penticton in the OMBL are the Kelowna Jays and Kamloops Sun Devils, which are both extensions of the college baseball programs at Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University respectively. The Trail Orioles will play an exhibition schedule against the OMBL teams. Teams will play a 24-game league schedule with playoffs scheduled for July 23-25, while the provincials are July 30-Aug, 2 in Trail.
