Strata development approved for Armstrong ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

A new strata development has been given the go-ahead in Armstrong. Council voted unanimously to rezone an Okanagan Street property that will allow Quality First Homes, owners of the property, to construct a nine-lot bare land strata that will feature singlefamily dwellings. “We applied for a couple of small variances that we needed in order to do some things in there because we have an old house that’s staying on the property and we’re subdividing it off,” said Rick Klein of Quality First Homes. “We’re staying on one lot so we needed a couple of changes to be made.” Klein started the process a couple of years ago, but the project stalled due to other business matters and the fact the real estate market in Armstrong died down due to the downturn in

the economy. “Now, the market has picked up a little bit, we managed to get all of our other stuff in order and now we’re able to move back out there,” said Klein of the Okanagan Street development, which is located across the street from the Royal York Golf Course. The existing house will remain R1 residential zoning, while the new development has been given an R3 residential apartment and multifamily dwelling status. Klein said it’s essentially the same as R1, the only difference is the road into the development is owned by his company, not the City of Armstrong. That, said Klein, will allow him to better shape the properties. “The plan is, a few of the lots are smaller, so we’ll put smaller, retirement-style homes, maybe some 1,200 square foot rancher-style homes,”

said Klein. “A few of the lots will take some bigger homes.” Klein hopes to begin servicing the property in the next couple of weeks. When that’s done, his company will start advertising for prospective clients to bring in their ideas . The homes are expected to be craftsman style with a little bit of stone, timber and wood. “We’re not trying to make them expensive,” said Klein. “The whole business is to try to keep things down so the homes are reasonably affordable. We don’t want huge, massive houses, that’s not what

we’re trying to do.” Armstrong council unanimously approved Klein’s application. “This shows that the

economy is starting to turn a little bit, and we look forward to a little bit more development in town,” said Mayor Chris

Pieper. Klein expects the entire project to take close to two years to complete. 4205 27 th Street, Vernon

Enderby RCMP are expressing concern over a pair of incidents they term as violent. Police received a report of an assault with a weapon in the 1500 block of George Street at around 11 p.m. March 23. “A man reported being led to a meeting with some young men who assaulted him with some hand-held, possibly metal-type weapon,” said Cpl. Tania Finn of the Enderby detachment. Police were advised some type of debt was involved in the incident. The victim was treated and released by B.C. Ambulance personnel. The incident, said Finn, is similar in time and location to a March 5 assault complaint in the same general area, where a man reported that two other men attacked him for some unknown reason. “We are concerned with violent incidents such as this, no matter what the underlying cause is,” said Finn, who said police are asking for any witnesses or passers-by to either assault to contact them. Both cases remain under investigation.
