T h e subject upon which the hopeful d e b a t e r s will speak is "Resolve: T h a t p r o p e r t y t a x e s in Michigan f o r s t a t e and local r e v e n u e s shall be s u b s t a n t i a l l y replaced by other f o r m s of t a x a t i o n . K. K. This a u g u s t , h i g h - a n d - m i g h t y body h a s chosen Wilbur C. Ensfield to s w i n g t h e gavel and the inimitable G e r r i t Wiegerink as scribe. The t r e a s u r e r is both u n k n o w n a n d unnecessary. Over 200 s t u d e n t s a t t e n d e d the joint m e e t i n g of the Y. W. C. A. and the Y. M. C. A. l a s t week Tuesday and heard C h r i s t i a n Walvoord ! of Williamson, N. Y., s e c r e t a r y of the V. M., s p e a k on the topic of "Good S p o r t s m a n s h i p , " which is one of the Y. M. s u b j e c t s of the " S p i r i t u a l Olympic" series. The first p a r t of the p r o g r a m was in c h a r g e of the Y. W. Miss G e r t r u d e Holleman led t h e song service. Miss M a r i a n Boot had c h a r g e of devotions and Miss Cornelia S t r y k e r , violinist, accompanied by M a r g a r e t S t r y k e r f u r n i s h e d the music. T h e f r e s h m a n girls, recently taken into the Y. W. C. A., conducted the y o u n g w o m e n ' s m e e t i n g last night. T h e c o m m i t t e e , under t h e ahlp direction of H e r b i e Marsilje, has been w o r k i n g h a r d and f a i t h f u l l y in o r d e r to m a k e this year's homecoming better than the best t h u s f a r . On F r i d a y t h e f e s t i v a l will begin with a bang. At e x a c t l y seven o'clock in the e v e n i n g t h e p a r a d e will s t a r t . The c o m i t t e e h a s t r i e d to m a k e the p a r a d e m o r e unified this y e a r by s u g g e s t i n g a g e n e r a l t h e m e . It is hoped t h a t t h i s t h e m e will be revealed d u r i n g t h e p a r a d e . As h a s been t h e c u s t o m , a v a l u a b l e prize will be offered f o r t h e best float. At t h e p r e s e n t time t h e r e is o n e " d i s a d v a n c e m e n t , " one selfish s y s t e m , which c a s t s a d a r k and gloomy shadow over an o t h e r w i s e quite s a t i s f y i n g picture. And t h a t obviously c o r r u p t scheme of operation and " g e n u i n e m e s s " is t h e a l t o g e t h e r popular r u s h i n g g a m e employed by t h e five m e n ' s l i t e r a r y societies on the c a m p u s . A change in s y s t e m at t h i s point is necessary. S o m e t h i n g m u s t be done. T h e p r e s e n t method of pledging new men into t h e v a r i o u s m e n ' s l i t e r a r y o r g a n i z a t i o n s has, by t h i s time, been proven impracticable. The w e a k n e s s e s of the p r e s e n t s y s t e m a r e not only acknowledged by t h e Hope fellows t h e m s e l v e s but by every m e m b e r of the f a c u l t y and alumni a s well. All realize it is f a r f r o m t h e best. Such a plan a s is now being practiced only causes h a r d f e e l i n g s and a general a t t i t u d e of f r a t e r n i t y egotism. Society Men of Hope — a w a k e n — and become a w a r e of t h e discords which continually break t h e h a r m o n y of t r u e school spirit because of your inability to i n a u g u r a t e t h e best. T h i s r u s h i n g business only d e a d e n s t h e life of t h e i n s t i t u t i o n . Men of Hope, the hope of Hope r e s t s in you. If t h e spirit of t h e Klue and O r a n g e is to g r o w , then t h e u n d a u n t e d search f o r t h e best m u s t g r o w in the h e a r t s of those who dwell here. If ever a n o p p o r t u n i t y for i m p r o v e m e n t was offered — it's now — more t h a n ever. The o p p o r t u n i t y of f o r m u l a t i n g a feasible plan which could be adopted so as to alleviate t h e p r e s e n t conditions belongs to t h e f r a t e r n i t y m e m b e r s t h e m selves.
