YOUR LOCAL TEAM And another month goes by... where does the time go? As I write this, Humph and I are just about to drive down to France with friends for a couple of weeks. The swimming pool, such a hit with the boy last year, beckons and now has built-in steps, which means he can exit whenever he wants, rather than having to rely on me putting down my glass to pull him out. We’ll both be happier! You will be aware that we are big fans of Surrey Hills Enterprises and are, as a local company based in the Surrey Hills, members of the organisation. Next month is their big annual event, the Surrey Hills Wood Fair which takes place on the 1st and 2nd October in the grounds of Birtley House near Bramley, Surrey. If you have never been,

it is well worth a visit, as there is plenty for everyone to do. It is of course mainly about wood but also about local artists, companies, manufacturers and producers. It is also very good value. Early bird tickets are just £7.50 per adult (£10 on the door) and children go free. See you there! Next month sees a few new changes. We are adding Effingham, East and West Horsley to our Guildford edition, and Leatherhead is joining our Dorking edition, which will take our total circulation to more than 117,500 copies every month. Look out as well for our brand new website with lots of new features and which will work on mobiles and tablets.

The aim of philosophy is to set people free; free from pressure and free from worry; free to grow, free to be themselves. So it seems fitting that a philosophy course should itself be free (apart from a ÂŁ5 registration fee). This ten session course called Practical Philosophy, looks at life and its meaning, the world and its causes and applying mindfulness to every moment. Based on the classic philosophies of East and West, it invites us to see life as a place to test the words of the wise. Feel free to join us.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September

Art & Craft in Farnham Heritage Open Days in Farnham, from 8th-11th September, is one of the highlights of the town’s year. Presented by the Farnham Society with support from the Town Council, it offers a varied mix of interesting properties opened for the occasion, exhibitions, and walks guided by experts, with many fascinating buildings on show. The event attracts thousands of visitors every year. The organisers choose a different theme each year, so there are always many new things to see. Last year’s focus on brewing and and the history of hop growing was a runaway success, and this time it is ‘Art & Craft in Farnham’. Farnham is now officially known as a craft town – the little 1870s Art School has grown into a fully fledged university, the Victorian Farnham Pottery is reborn as a ceramic centre of excellence, and the Crafts Study Centre at the University for the Creative Arts takes centre stage. Public art includes a major new feature in the town centre, a large bronze statue of William Cobbett on his horse, unveiled just before Heritage Open Days. An exhibition tracing the history of pottery making is on show at the Museum of Farnham, and the Farnham Pottery in Wrecclesham is displaying its unique buildings, purpose built by potters for use by potters. This year Farnham’s Heritage Open Days link with the Royal Institute of British Architects and selected buildings badged with the ‘Love Architecture’ logo offer tours, talks and architectural information.

From its prominent position on Castle Hill, Farnham Castle has overlooked the town of Farnham for nearly 900 years with almost continuous occupancy. The historic Norman Keep and the stunning Bishops Palace and grounds tell the story of the Castle’s years as the home and administrative centre of the powerful Bishops of Winchester. In the 1950s when it was no longer needed by the Church Commission, the Castle could have been abandoned and left as a ruin but, after intervention by the Farnham Society, it was let on a full repairing lease to the International Conference and Briefing Centre which restored and used the buildings until 2012. Farnham Castle Intercultural Training continues to operate its global business from the Bishops Palace and recently the Castle has undergone a successful transformation into a thriving Events, Conference and Wedding venue, while the Norman Keep remains open to the public daily.

A selection of the huge collection of paintings and drawings amassed over the course of 60 years, by retired architect Michael Blower of the Farnham practice Stedman Blower. Thsi is being shown in the Long Kiln Room at Farnham Maltings.

Guides will describe the effect that a good water supply of water, the arrival of the railway and the new Aldershot Army Garrison had on the area. It is very exciting to be part of such a dynamic and environmentally progressive industry. I especially look forward to when my husband turns up so I can go and have a wander round the beautiful grounds and see what wonderful woody things people are up to.”

The Wood Fair has increased in popularity and size each year and attracts a wide range of exhibitors all keen to showcase their unique products many inspired by the versatility and importance of this vital natural resource – wood. Carrie White, Events Manager for Surrey Hills Enterprises, a Community Interest Company (CIC) who organise the Wood Fair comments: “The Surrey Hills Wood Fair offers something for everyone and we encourage families to come and enjoy a different day out in the Surrey Hills. Discover rural crafts, see working vintage machinery, sample delicious Surrey produce, enjoy horse and cart rides and even climb a tree – there really is something for everyone!” One exhibitor, Susanna Carter is a woodworker specialising in reclaimed and found materials and has supported the Surrey Hills Wood Fair since the beginning, she comments; “The SHWF is one of my favourite fairs, there are so many really interesting people there. Having been an exhibitor since the beginning is very special. The fair is not just about local crafts and people selling, it encompasses wood fuel,

Also returning will be the Surrey Hills Ukulele Big Band who will again perform on the main stage and whilst moving around the fair on a Horse and Wagon! 5. This year we have something really special for steam enthusiasts – a 1926 steam powered saw mill! Come and watch it in action slicing up large logs. To bring us up to date, Jas P Wilson will be showcasing today’s modern machinery and demonstrating how it is used to manage our woodlands. The Rural Life Centre will be on hand with historical facts and their fine collection of tools used throughout the ages by foresters. 6. Surrey Hills Trust Fund Profits made from the Wood Fair will help to support the Surrey Hills Trust Fund which has been established in partnership with the Community Foundation for Surrey to help conserve and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape. The fund provides grants to support projects, programmes and activities that benefit the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ensure our countryside is enjoyed by generations to come. One project the Surrey Hills Trust Fund has recently supported is the Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP) who help local young people to make safe, happy, resilient, and positive changes in their lives and in their community. The LYP took a group of young people out into the Surrey Hills to do Forest School Survival Skills training, which involved building shelters, camp fires and learning how to forage for food, as well as outdoor team building. They also did a mountain bike course on Leith Hill, learning how to navigate the trails, understand the environment and work together. The aim was to offer a unique outdoor learning experience to young people who may not always get the opportunity, helping them engage with the Surrey Hills countryside and boosting confidence and learning. Joe Crome, General Manager, LYP comments: “We were delighted to receive this grant from the Surrey Hills Trust Fund and work with the group of students. The programme we provided has not only been great fun but provided the students with new skills vital for learning and helped to boost confidence.”

Why choose a prep school? Sean Skehan, headmaster, Barrow Hills School, looks at some of the reasons.

An all-round education The independent nature of a prep school could give your child access to opportunities - academic, extracurricular and pastoral- that are not always available in the state system. A good prep school will help your children to enjoy their childhood for longer because of the security and care it offers until thirteen. It can protect them from some of the less pleasant pressures of growing up while developing qualities of character which will be the foundation of happy and successful teenage years. An obsession with academic achievement above all else is something of which both state and prep schools can be guilty, focusing on league tables and SATS results at the expense of a great all-round education. The pressure associated with this type of environment is rarely helpful. A good school will strike a balance between academic achievement, creativity, and sport, and the development of the attitudes and qualities essential to happiness and fulfillment.

BE GOOD AT BEING YOURSELF

Smaller class size For many parents, class size is a key factor in considering a prep school. Typically averaging a maximum of twenty, smaller class sizes help teachers to really get to know each child’s academic abilities, allowing them more time to focus on each individual. We know that spending quality time with children reaps rewards, in fact, research from Durham University claims that children who attend private school benefit from the equivalent of two years’ extra education by the time they are sixteen. The opportunity for a teacher to invest more time in understanding how a child ticks and establishing her or his pastoral and academic needs is the great strength of a prep school. More sport Sport encourages a healthy, fitter lifestyle, helps children to be team players and leaders, and to deal with victory and defeat. In a prep school your child may enjoy up to five hours sport per week, including team games, matches and dedicated sports afternoons. As well as developing their physical sporting abilities your child will also get to revel in the whole match experience; travelling, the all-important match tea and the hearty ‘three cheers’ at the end of the game – fond memories that will stay with them for life. Check what the prep school’s policy is in relation to matches. Some have a ‘sport for all’ philosophy; every continued over...

As a parent, choosing a school has to be one of the most significant decisions that you will make for your child. For some parents an independent prep school will be one of the choices they are considering; for others, it may never have crossed their mind that this could be the right school for their child.

child has the opportunity to play in a match every week. Not all schools follow this approach, so while the children may benefit from playing a lot of sport, unless they are particularly talented, they won’t always get the chance to play as part of a school team. Impressive facilities Many parents will identify with an idyllic school setting where their children can be children, spending their early academic years in an environment that allows them to climb trees, kick up leaves, explore the natural world and generally enjoy plenty of fresh air and run around outside to let off steam. Some prep schools are able to provide impressive sports halls, astro-turf, swimming pools and tennis courts, as well as climbing walls, extensive games fields and even access to stunning natural woodland. They may also have science laboratories, drama and dance studios, design technology workshops, art studios and music rooms. Specialist teaching Often prep schools have subject specialist teachers rather than generalist class teachers. At Barrow Hills our French teachers work with children from Nursery (age 2-3) to Year 8 and games teachers work with children from Kindy (age 3-4) to Year 8. This means that the children experience a variety of learning techniques and forge strong relationships with a range of teachers. A prep school usually includes a wider range of subjects, such as languages, drama and music, with a broader range of musical instrument lessons to try.

Works for working parents In today’s world it is the norm for both parents to be working. Generally, traditional school hours simply don’t match those of the average working day. Prep schools are more likely to accommodate the child care needs of working parents, allowing a stress-free and seamless transition from home to school, without having to make complicated arrangements involving other child care providers. At Barrow Hills for example, the day starts at 8am with a breakfast club. Any child can go home as late as 6pm; the older children can do their homework and the younger ones relax by playing a quiet game. And there is a healthy snack to keep hungry tummies happy until dinner time! Communication At prep school parents are invited to parent consultations two or three times per year and can expect three written reports, keeping them informed about their child’s progress and achievements. We are able to spend more time talking with you regularly about how your child is progressing and about her or his academic and pastoral needs. Exam Preparation Prep schools put preparation for examinations in the context of a broad and balanced education. They will often prepare children for exams by offering guidance on the correct exam technique rather than teaching to the test, often the approach with SATS. There are of course always exceptions to this rule so be sure to find out more about a prep school’s policy on this when you visit.

St Ives girls are going places – into the forest with Forest School, rock climbing, into the photography lab and swimming all year round… you name it, they do it. It may sound like playtime but at St Ives our girls benefit from a truly 360 degree, practical, creative, sporting and of course academic education. It is our aim to make the most of every child, teaching her to love learning, to love challenging herself and to love being the best she can be. As an independent school we are free to design a curriculum that brings out the very best in every single girl, whatever her talents and interests, because we understand that every child is unique. We believe that it is that focus on individual tailored learning in every aspect of her education that helps our girls achieve the exceptional results that we see year on year. If you would like to see how St Ives could be the place to help your daughter blossom why not join us for one of our open days on 7th October or 4th November. Repetitive Injuries and Joint Pain in Children and Adolescents Nikki Browning BSc (hons) MCSP MAACP Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist sport and over use their quadriceps muscles. It often happens at the beginning of a rapid growth spurt.

Sports participation promotes the physical and emotional well-being of children and also encourages the lifelong habit of exercise. Although the benefits of athletic activity are significant, it is extremely important that children do lots of regular stretching to prevent injury and pain. Overuse injuries occur gradually over time when an athletic activity is repeated so often, areas of the body do not have enough time to heal between playing. For example, overhead bowling in cricket can be associated with injuries to the shoulder and spine and football is often associated with injuries to the knee.

Severs - is a common overuse injury in children; with pain in the heel where the Achilles tendon inserts. Again this especially occurs in physically active children who play lots of sport. It usually occurs during adolescent growth spurts and is only temporary; but if persistent then physiotherapy can help. Many overuse injuries in children can be prevented. The key to prevention is to avoid overdoing any single sport, doing regular stretching and giving growing bodies adequate rest between practices or games. FIND OUT MORE If your child or teenager experiences any pain or you would like any advice to prevent overuse injuries please call Physio1to1 01483 424470 to book an appointment with me.

Overuse injuries can affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and growth plates. In children, these structures are still growing and the growth is generally uneven. Bones grow first which pulls at tight muscles and tendons. This uneven growth pattern makes younger athletes more susceptible to muscle, tendon, and growth plate injuries. Muscles and tendons adapt to stress—that’s how they become stronger. But they also need to rest and rebuild between the episodes of stress. With an overuse injury the muscle or tendon receives the stress but never gets a chance to rest. Growth plates are the areas of developing cartilage where bone growth occurs in children. Over the next three pages, you will find out In Farnham, for residents living in a Band D more about what we did in 2015/16. We property, this worked out at £59.83 for the year. would love to know what you think about how we spend your money and if you have You have told us this represents good value any ideas for what you would like to see us for money and that we made Farnham town doing in the future.

Best place to live Farnham is often cited as one of the best places to live in the UK. In 2015/16, we continued to make improvements to make it even better. Improving Farnham’s streets We like to think we can get things done so, after receiving numerous complaints from local residents about the state of the railway bridge on Firgrove Hill, we decided to get involved.

We officially opened West Street chapel as an artist’s studio following a major project to renovate the Grade II listed building and bring it back into community use. We also continued our programme of pathway resurfacing works in each cemetery. We created a new Trust, along with the Hale History Project to find a sustainable use for Hale chapels. Farnham in Bloom

For over two years, we lobbied Network Rail to improve the visual appearance of the bridge. We finally received their permission to carry out cosmetic painting while Firgrove Hill was closed for resurfacing works in June 2015. To help us to improve the efficiency of watering the town centre hanging baskets, we bought a hybrid electric utility vehicle. It is smaller than a conventional truck making it useful for reaching parts of the cemeteries and allotments, which are usually only accessible on foot. The vehicle has an electric pump, which allows us to water early in the morning, without inconveniencing residents or causing an obstruction. Cemeteries In May, we carried out an inspection to check the safety of the memorials in our cemeteries. September 2016

2015 marked the 25th anniversary of Farnham in Bloom and so we were delighted to win Gold in the Town Centre and Large Town categories.

Even more people got involved in a range of community activities and events, which were designed to enhance Farnham. We were honoured to be the only town in Surrey to be invited to enter Britain in Bloom in 2016. Big Pick Fire extinguishers, tyres, cans and bottles were just some of the items to be removed from Farnham’s streets during two community litter pick weeks known as Big Pick and the national litter pick Clean for the Queen.

Bloomin’ Arts

The Dance Movement received a community grant so that 150 children could perform a specially choreographed dance, before the Farnham in Bloom judges.

Tourism and events Tourism and events are important for our local economy and bring thousands of people into the town each year. In 2015, ‘food’ and ‘music’ were a common theme. Farnham people supported local farmers by buying direct from the producer at the monthly farmers’ market. The town also hosted two Italian food markets.

A local artist also received a grant to hold free collagemaking workshops on the theme of Farnham in Bloom. Both projects involved members of the community that may not otherwise have been involved. Improving how we communicate We continue to use a variety of communication tools to reach a wide range of residents. Our electronic newsletter is distributed regularly and has over 850 subscribers. Social media continues to be an important channel of communication. We were delighted to be runner up in the Digital Communication of the Year category in the National Association of Local Councils’ Star Council Awards.

The free summertime Music in the Meadow concerts held on a Sunday afternoon continued to be popular. September’s two-week long Feast of Food provided people with a chance to enjoy Farnham’s culinary delights. The celebration ended with a day-long Food Festival in Castle Street, which was attended by thousands of people. The Christmas season started with the Christmas lights switch-on, which was a family event enjoyed by thousands. In December, we held a Christmas market and a Civic Christmas Carol Service.

The majority of our press releases receive coverage in the local media and also appear on our popular website. The 2016 Official Residents’ Guide was delivered to homes in Farnham and was packed full of useful information.

Community events and presentations As home to the 3rd battalion of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, we were proud to participate in Armed Forces Day and Commonwealth Day. As well as marking Remembrance Sunday, we were pleased to see 12 schools taking part in a special service of remembrance at the town centre war memorial on Armistice Day.

Supporting local causes Every year, we award grants totalling more than £55,000 to organisations seeking funding for a project that will promote the environment and/or community life for local residents. Neighbourhood Plan A lot of work went on behind the scenes to progress Farnham’s Neighbourhood Plan. Following a public consultation, the draft neighbourhood plan was updated so that it could progress to the final stage.

The Mayor of Farnham presented nine people with Services to Farnham awards in recognition of the outstanding or crucial service they provide to the community. 30

Last chance to have your say on Farnham’s Neighbourhood Plan A project aimed at giving the Farnham community more of a say on the development of their local area has reached a critical milestone. At the end of July, after more than three years of public engagement and consultation, research and information gathering, Farnham Town Councillors agreed the final draft of the Farnham Neighbourhood Plan and submitted it to Waverley Borough Council. This triggered a six-week public consultation to inform the Examination by an Independent Examiner. The consultation runs from 19 August to 3 October. How to comment The Plan can be viewed at Farnham Town Council, Farnham Library or at Waverley’s offices in Godalming. It can also be seen and commented upon online at www.waverley.gov.uk/FarnhamNP. What will happen at the end of the consultation At the end of the consultation, Waverley will collate the comments received for the Independent Examiner. It is expected that the Examiner will consider the Plan and comments during November. Once the examiner has considered the Plan and comments, he or she will put forward a recommendation. The possible scenarios are: • The Examiner approves the Plan for Referendum • The Examiner approves the Plan with minor modifications for Referendum • The Examiner finds that the Plan does not reach the basic standard required. A majority Referendum result in favour of the Plan is required before the Plan can be formally ‘made’ and become part of Waverley’s planning policies. Why it is important for Farnham to have a Neighbourhood Plan Having an adopted Neighbourhood Plan empowers communities to shape the development and growth of the area where they live and work.Without a Neighbourhood Plan, Farnham would be left very vulnerable and would have no say in where new homes, shops and offices should be built, their design and the infrastructure that should be provided to support the new developments. The Neighbourhood Plan covers a 15-year period up to 2031 and is the most significant document to be produced by Farnham Town Council. When the plan is adopted by Waverley Borough Council, it will provide protection for the character and heritage of Farnham while also responding to the changing needs of its population. Further information To comment on the Plan visit www.waverley.gov.uk/FarnhamNP. The Neighbourhood Plan and background documents can also be found at www.farnham.gov.uk/shapefarnham. 34

GARDENING An Inca Garden at Hampton Court

With Beth Otway

so they were really keen to have a public entrance – during the show, people will be able to go in and out, which I really like. BO: Yes, it’s wonderful to see a Show Garden that visitors to the show can access, and really experience themselves. JJ: The thing I like about the garden is that it’s colourful. It’s a fun garden, and I hope it’ll inspire people.

Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show has been designed to convey a sense of adventure and travel to its visitors. The Inca Garden reflects the experiences of American explorer Hiram Bingham, who discovered the ‘lost’ Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, high in the Peruvian Andes, in 1911.

BO: I am sure your garden will inspire many people. I like your vegetables and your courgettes too. JJ: They’re all traditional Inca crops. BO: I have grown all of these vegetables - they are fun to grow. Who built the garden?

I caught up with Jennifer Jones, the designer of Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden, to find out more about this interesting garden, which was designed for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. BO: Hi Jennifer, are you pleased with the garden? JJ: I am, I’m really pleased with it. Yes! I didn’t know that much about tropical plants before, so it’s been really interesting – I’ve learnt so much. I’ve learnt about whole new sections of plants that I just had no idea about. BO: How long were you researching the plants for the garden? JJ: We started researching last October. You have to submit the first designs in December. We’ve got quite a lot of plants that are from South America in the garden. I was really lucky, I found a good nursery, Desert & Jungle in Somerset where I got a lot of my plants. BO: What will happen to the plants, when the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show finishes? JJ: I think some of them are going to go back to Desert & Jungle; I’ve also been in touch with The Living Rainforest in Berkshire. I sent them a list with the plants I have - they’ll have anything we can give them. I’ve designed the garden so that we won’t throw very much away. All the stone is going back to the stone supplier - it can be re-used again, and all the plants are going to go to a good home. BO: What’s the experience of designing the garden been like? JJ: Well, Journey Latin America has been a great sponsor of the garden, and it’s been a great opportunity for me, it’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s been a really interesting garden, because JLA are all about visiting countries, 38

Top left: Jennifer Jones in the Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden Above: Another view of the garden

JJ: Surrey Hills Landscaping - Mark Leverton, built the garden, they did all the stone. Mark was really good - we had a little blip this morning, he was straight here, helping us out – he was unflappable. BO: And is there anyone else you’d like to thank? JJ: I’ve mentioned JLA, who have been great, Rob from Desert & Jungle who has been great with the plants, and my family who have been great as well! My mum has helped out too. Surrey Hills Landscaping have been brilliant. It’s been a great experience all round!

Soundingoff WE ARE NOT AMUZED

Andrew Crisell, our grumpy old git (GOG), recently made a list of potential gripes and was horrified to discover that virtually everything irritated him, the classic symptom of a dreadful old fogey. Here is his latest salvo...

It’s time, folks, that GOG, your friendly neighbourhood whinger, complained about a universal pestilence. It’s been with us for more than half a century, everybody loathes it, and it’s easily cured. Yet it never goes away.

STRIPED FINISH

By using a rear roller mower, we are able to create the highly sought after striped effect giving your lawn the “Premier” look.

AERATION

Using a fertilizer with a blend of key nutrients and a highly advanced weed control, we can ensure your lawn is green, healthy and weed free all year round. look.

Hollow tine aeration has many benefits for your lawn. This process loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients to the lawn. Also it enhances oxygen levels in the soil, which in turn stimulates root growth and enhances the activity of thatch-decomposing organisms. While removing cores of soil, the tines also sever roots, rhizomes and stolons, promoting new grow and improving overall health.

WEED & FEED

Strimming is used for areas that are difficult or impossible to mow i.e. against walls or fences and on slopes or banks.

STRIMMING

This vigorous process is used to remove the build-up of thatch in the lawn, using a machine the downward blades hook out the thatch (similar to raking) while cutting stolons in the process. This allows better access for sunlight and airflow whilst also improving drainage. Cutting the stolons encourages the development of new shoots thus increasing lawn density.

They buy their pork from Scott’s of Storrington who farm their free range pigs a few miles from Cowdray. The team cure cuts of bacon to the Cowdray specific recipe, smoke some in the traditional way and leave the rest green. The team also make the famous Cowdray sausages to several different recipes, none involving any preservatives. WALK - Chawton to Bentworth This walk starts and ends in Chawton, well worth a visit in its own right and the home of Jane Austen. Her house is opposite the village car park. The walk description is provided by Guildford Rambling Club, see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk. They also provided the Peaslake walk in July which we accidentally failed to acknowledge – apologies!

The walk 1. Walk back to the A31 roundabout and cross into the road opposite. Go under a bridge (the Watercress Line) and, a little way beyond it, turn left along a lane, Chawton Park Road/National Cycle Route 23. You will now walk more or less straight ahead for almost 2 miles before you turn off. Along the way, you will initially pass a few houses and then the lane becomes a track. You pass a Chawton Farm information plaque and go through various gates and along a wide grassy avenue through Chawton Park Wood. You ignore various lefts and rights including one very wide track sweeping away left. Shortly after the latter you encounter a fork and take the right-hand branch. Soon after that you turn off, taking the second clear but unsigned path heading away to the right and up through trees. 2. At the top, you reach a fence and walk left looking for a turning off to the right (which may or may not now have a signpost). Here, take this turn right to continue forward, passing a barrier and proceeding along a path which soon merges into a wide vehicle track. Follow this for over half a mile, passing metal gates and barriers, until reaching a small house (on the left-hand side).

Here, take a bridleway right and follow the track until you reach houses and a road. Turn right along the road but immediately take an unsigned path off right, over grass near a house and along a fenced corridor to reach a field. Walk along the left-hand side of this field and the right-hand side of the next to reach a tarmac drive. Go straight across and along the left-hand side of the next field. Keep going forward until reaching a hedge and dropping down through a gap in it onto a wide stony track (Turners Lane). Turn left and walk up into Bentworth, emerging on a road with the Star Inn to your right. At April 2016 the pub was ‘closed until further notice’. This may or may not be still the case when you do the walk. Fear not though. If it is closed you could use the benches opposite for your picnic. And there is another picnic option and another pub a little way further on. 3. Follow the sign to the school and church and then turn right to walk past the school and straight through the churchyard (a possible picnic spot). The path exits the back of the churchyard and continues to meet a road. Go straight across and into a side road signed to Shalden and Alton. Follow this road round to reach the other pub, the Sun. Continue down a hill. Just after some ‘No Limit’ signs and before a side road right, turn right and go through a wide gap in the hedge into a field. Walk around this clockwise, ignoring the obvious path which heads out half-right. At the far left corner of the field go through into the next field and continue along its left-hand edge to enter a third field. Here, walk straight out to the far side to reach Turners Lane again.

4. Turn left. Walk for about 1.5 miles along this wide track which undulates up and down. Reach a road. Turn left and walk along, passing a couple of houses, until you find, next to a large oak tree, a footpath sign pointing right. This path takes you out half-left across a field and through into another, very large, field. Continue forward across it to reach a gate on the other side. Emerge on a track, turn right and walk a few yards to reach the dead end of a road. Turn right and quickly left down a track to reach a busy road. Cross to a track labelled ‘Bushy Leaze Wood’. You will walk about almost three quarters of a mile through this wood. You do it by immediately, at the entry barrier, following a yellow arrow off the very wide main track and branching left, up into the trees. At another yellow arrow you are taken left. Now continue along the path following yellow arrows. Reach and cross a wide gravelled track and continue on, ignoring a quick right turn. 5. The path reaches a 5 way junction with a 2 way signpost. You continue straight ahead along a very wide grassy track. Reach a fork with two yellow arrows. Branch right. Eventually you will see, on the right-hand side, a yellow arrow on a post but, beware, it is on the back of the post! Turn right and follow the path as it swings left and along the line of a fence. Opposite the start of a track on the left, look for a yellow arrow on a gap in the fence. Follow the path through here and down a slope. This brings you to a road. Turn right and immediately swing sharp left to walk under the Watercress Line, down to the roundabout on the A31 and across into Chawton.

PROFILE Transition Farnham Farnham Local Food Veg-Garden Fete 2015

Transition Farnham started in 2009 as a group of town people who wanted to explore ways in which the local community could make creative and positive responses to the impacts of converging global crises: climate change, ‘peak oil’ (energy crisis) and financial instability were, and still are, the big challenges.

urban planning, flood risk mitigation and community work spaces. Thanks to the Transition Network there is a rapid spread and exchange of experiences and entrepreneurial ideas between initiatives, one of which the Re-economy Project, has inspired Transition Farnham’s current proposal for a Community Hive.

The key idea was to set up local initiatives, however small, that could start to build greater community resilience as well as personal well-being. Developing things sustainably, in the sense of handing on a better and more vibrant dwelling place for future generations, was and always has been a basic tenet of the Transition movement.

Pending demolition of The Woolmead Transition Farnham has negotiated free rental of a large retail premises. This will be available for about six months and will act as the Hive. Here a host of people can come together to craft the future of Farnham as a vibrant, resilient community.

The Transition Farnham group is one of 100s of similar grassroots initiatives across communities in the UK and around the world that make up the Transition Movement. These citizen-led initiatives are starting to re-create and re-imagine, in a wide and diverse range of contexts, future alternatives to our oil dependent way of life, one based on localised food, sustainable energy sources, resilient local economies and an enlivened sense of community well-being. Today there are four successful local projects which Transition Farnham, in partnership with others, has helped bring about: Farnham Local Food – a fruit and veg growing co-operative on two sites; Farnham Hoppers – collective growing of hops in town gardens to make a local brew; Farnham Repair Cafe – a regular place to bring broken things and fix them with expert help; Farnham Eco-Cinema – film and food nights to inspire conversation about all the good stuff happening the world over. Two other initiatives, Farnham Greenways and EcoHome Open Days are designed to lower the town’s carbon emissions by encouraging more cycling and the retrofitting of homes to higher standards of energy efficiency and lower carbon footprint. New ideas for community ventures are emerging everywhere in transport, energy, our food economy, September 2016

The ‘Hive’ will open at the beginning of September and comprise three areas; a community workspace, an engagement space and a screening room. An early Re-economy project is Yo Homies envisaged as a community work space for home workers and self employed people in Farnham town centre. Another strand to the Community Hive is Collabor-8, a group of artists who will work together on projects that engage local people in the process of re-imagining Farnham. This will link in with the local architects’ initiative Re-Crafting Farnham. Transition Farnham hosts a regular Green Drinks evening at The Albion pub, third Tuesday monthly. Open to all who care about Farnham as a more inclusive, low carbon, re-localised place that balances the needs of people, nature and our economy. Gather around 7.30pm.
