As Patrick´s Valentine’s Day 2007 exhibition approached, fans of his colorful Mexican scenes were worried that they´d be seeing only nudes. However, despite his near obsession with the female form and his new techniques, Patrick´s love of Mexico and its people kept him from abandoning this traditional subject matter. This show, which would prove to be his last, presented some of his most captivating indigenous scenes ever. They have a softer focus, but he captured the feeling of the scene every bit as strongly as he did with his earlier bold and bright treatments. Four are now offered in a collection of offset lithos sold by Cathy Denoun in a few galleries, including Galeria Pacifico. This particular painting appeals to me because of the way Patrick uses the light filtering between the tarps and sheets in this tianguis (temporary market) to dramatize a strong figure of emphasis, the lady in red with the white scarf, within a very crowded scene.

Mientras la exposición del día de San Valentín se aproximaba en el 2007, los entusiastas de sus coloridas escenas mexicanas estaban preocupados de que sólo verían desnudos. Sin embargo, a pesar de su gusto casi obsesivo por la forma femenina y por sus nuevas técnicas, el amor de Patrick por México y su gente le impidió abandonar este tema tradicional. Esta exposición, que resultaría ser su última, presentaba algunas de sus escenas indígenas más cautivantes; tenían un enfoque más suave, pero capturó la sensación de la escena con una intensidad igual a la que había logrado con acabados fuertes y brillantes. Cathy Denoun ahora vende las cuatro como una colección de litografías en algunas galerías, incluyendo Galería Pacífico. Esta pintura en particular me llama la atención por la manera en que Patrick utilizó la luz que se filtra entre los toldos de este tianguis (un mercado temporal) para enfatizar a la mujer en rojo con la bufanda blanca, dentro de una escena muy concurrida.
