A welcoming reception took place at the State Department’s diplomatic reception room, where, surrounded by important historical treasures, recipients had the opportunity to mingle and exchange useful information. A true ambassador of wonderful things Mexican, Selitzer wore a stylish gown designed by acclaimed design firm Pineda Covalín and featuring some of our country’s most colorful emblems. The following day began with a guided tour of the White House and ended with a gala ball hosted by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, where she received her award, along with one principal from each US state and one other principal from an international school, that one in Prague, Czech Republic. “This experience makes me realize how important it is to recognize people around you for doing a good job,” she mused. “I am particularly heartened that, at a time when bigger usually means better, the sparkle of our little gem of a school can be appreciated by the rest of the world.” We couldn’t agree more. Now celebrating its 25th year, the American School of Puerto Vallarta was founded by Gerald and Kathy Selitzer, director and principal, respectively. PO Nominada por sus colaboradores y elegida por el Departamento de Estado en Estados Unidos, la directora de primaria del Colegio Americano de Puerto Vallarta, Kathy Selitzer, fue galardonada con el premio a la Mejor Directora Internacional 2011, el más alto reconocimiento que se otorga a directores en colegios americanos en Estados Unidos y el resto del mundo. La ceremonia se llevó a cabo en Washington, D.C., e incluyó dos días de actividades que la sencilla directora describió con una sola palabra: “¡emocionantes!” Todo comenzó con un coctel de bienvenida en el salón diplomático del Departamento de Estado, en el cual, el resto de los galardonados tuvieron la oportunidad de conocerse e intercambiar ideas. Como toda una embajadora de la cultura mexicana, Selitzer lució un hermoso atuendo diseñado por Pineda Covalín, con coloridos emblemas de nuestro país. El siguiente día incluyó una visita guiada a la Casa Blanca y termino con una cena baile de gala cuyo anfitrión fue Arne Duncan, Secretario de Educación. La educadora recibió su galardón, una campana, junto con un director de cada estado de la unión americana, así como otro director internacional de Praga. “La experiencia me hace ver lo importante que es el reconocer a nuestros colegas,” comentó. “Para mí es importante que, siendo la tendencia que lo mejor es generalmente más grande, la pequeña joya que es nuestra escuela brilla lo suficiente para que el mundo la pueda apreciar.” Estamos completamente de acuerdo. Nominated by her staff and chosen by the US Department of State, Kathy Selitzer, principal of the American School of Puerto Vallarta’s elementary school, received the 2011 International Distinguished Principal of the Year award, the highest accolade given to educators serving as principals in the USA and at international American Schools. The awards ceremony took place in Washington, D.C. and included two days of related activities that, when asked what the experience was like, the humble educator summed up with a single word: “Thrilling!”
