Students, Winter Quarter is well under way. Hopefully you have all settled into the routine again after the nice long break. Many of you are taking an extra course this quarter. I hope that is working well. It will soon be time for me to register you for Spring Quarter! Registration opens on February 15th. If you plan on taking an elective for Spring Quarter, you will need to register for that on your own through MyUW. However, I will register those of you who have chosen to go on the UWB MBA Global Study Tour at the end of the quarter. It will be exciting to hear from you all once you return from Brazil.

There will be lots to look forward to in the coming months.

Students and Alumni, Please mark your calendar now for Friday, April 12, 2013 for our annual MBA Student/Alumni Networking Event. This will be from 6-8pm in the North Creek Events Center on the Bothell Campus. This year we will honor the Class of 2003 (10 yr.) and the Class of 2008 (5 yr.) We hope that as many alumni from all classes will attend to network with our current students. This is always an event that we look forward to.

MBAA will team up with UW Bothell Career Services to provide a MBA Career Networking Night at the ELC on May 16th from 4 – 6 pm. An invitation has gone out to organizations that would like to promote their internship or career opportunities. This is open to both students and alumni.

LMBA Class of 2013 and the TMBA Class of 2013, I am sure you are looking forward to graduating in June. Remember that you need 74 credits to graduate. If you will not have 74 credits until you complete some electives in the summer, you may still walk with your class in June. I will send you more details on how to “apply to graduate” as we get closer to the date. The following information may help you plan ahead: MBA Graduation Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013, 6 pm, Overlake Golf and Country Club. The guest speaker will be Phil Condit, Ex-CEO, Boeing.

LMBA and TMBA Class of 2014: Your Fall Retreat will be at Sleeping Lady, a mountain resort near Leavenworth. The dates for this are September 14 and 15, 2013.

2013 Innovation Forum Feb. 11-14th UW Bothell’s second annual Innovation Forum is a week-long event will showcase UW Bothell’s many design-related endeavors in the areas of teaching, research, service and outreach.   

While there is no universally accepted definition of design, for our purposes “design” will include both human and natural phenomena.

Design can be defined as creating the plan, drawing, schema, strategy, or process for making an object, event, or experience.

Design can also refer to the occurrence of patterns in diverse spheres across the arts, humanities, the social and natural sciences, business, education, mathematics, and engineering.

Winter Quarter Faculty TMBA and LMBA: Paul Collins - BBUS 524 Creative and Innovative Management (LMBA) Technology and Innovative Management (TMBA) Dr. Collins' interests encompass technology and innovation management, new product development processes, globally distributed project work and organization theory.

His research has focused on topics such as connectivity and distributed project team performance, concurrent product development practices and innovation performance, innovation adoption timing and firm performance, investments in knowledge and firm survival, and social and technical drivers of rates of innovation.

He has published in leading management and technology journals, is the recipient of several research awards, and has consulted with companies such as Ingersoll Rand, Rolls-Royce, and Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates

Juan Camilo Gomez – BBUS 504 Econ for Business Dr. Gomez is an assistant professor in the UW Bothell School of Business. He obtained his Ph. D. at the Department of Economics, University of Minnesota, with minor fields in game theory and financial economics.

His research, which includes topics such as bargaining, efficiency, cooperative solution concepts and coalition formation, has already appeared in "Games and Economic Behavior". He has taught both graduate (Institute of Economics, University of Copenhagen) and undergraduate audiences (Macalester College, University of Minnesota and Universidad de los Andes) a number of courses including game theory, mathematical economics, international economics and Latin American economies among others. In 2010 he was named MBA Professor of the Year.

In Colombia, Juan Camilo obtained his undergraduate math degree, worked for the public sector at the National Planning Department and had a taste of private business holding a position at Diner's Club. He is a member of the Econometric Society and the Game Theory Society.

Ron Tilden – B BUS 503 (590) Financial Reporting and Analysis Ron Tilden, lecturer, came to the UW Bothell Faculty with an MBA from the University of Washington, Seattle, and prior experience as a CPA, Ron Tilden has had a successful career in financial management in the High Technology sector. Most recently, Mr. Tilden was Chief Financial Officer of WRQ, Inc., a software company in Seattle, Washington.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Tilden was Chief Financial Officer of Intermec Corporation, and also held various positions with the International accounting firm of Deloitte and Touche.

Mr. Tilden teaches various accounting courses in the UWB School of Business. Mr Tilden lives with his wife (Gail) in Woodinville and has an active family with three college and high school aged children.

Debra Medlar – BBUS 503 (590) Financial Reporting and Analysis Deborah Medlar is a senior lecturer at the University of Washington, teaching full time at UWB during fall and winter quarters and at UW Seattle during spring quarter. She teaches Tax, Law and accounting courses. She is a graduate of the LLM (Graduate Law degree in Taxation) program at NYU and earned a JD from the University of Washington.

She practiced law in Alaska and Washington states prior to beginning her teaching career. She has received numerous teaching awards as well as an award for National Beta Alpha Psi Advisor (National Accounting Honorary) of the Year.

Brandon Fleming - BBUS 507 Global Business Brandon Fleming is a full-time lecturer in Strategic Management at the University of Washington, Bothell. At the University of Washington, Seattle, he received his PhD in Strategic Management, and he holds two degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has presented his research on networks and earnings manipulation at the Academy of Management annual meetings.

Before embarking on his academic career, Dr. Fleming worked in research at the William Davidson Institute, which is the leading think tank on transition and development.

Surya Pathak – BBUS 509 OP & Project Management Dr. Pathak is an Assistant Professor of Operations Management in the UWB School of Business. He received his PhD in interdisciplinary management of technology from Vanderbilt University in 2005. Prior to joining University of Washington, Bothell he has served as a research and technical lead at the Advanced Computing Center for Research and Education developing next generation network based data storage technologies, and as a Senior Research Associate in the Engineering Management Program and Systems and Decision Making group at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

While Supply chain management is his primary focal area of research, Dr. Pathak is very interested in using the Complexity theory and Network theory lens to understand diffusion of lean manufacturing practices in a supply chain, project management in large organizations, and understanding the interface between marketing, finance and operations. His methodological orientations include agent-based simulations and cellular automaton models on grid computing infrastructure along with mathematical modeling, robust and reliability-based design optimization, archival data analysis, and game theoretic modeling techniques.

Recently Dr. Pathak has also used qualitative research methods and secondary data based empirical techniques to enhance the richness of his research investigations.

He is a founding member of the Center for Supply Network Science at Arizona State University, at Tempe, Arizona. Dr. Pathak’s work has been published in the Decision Support Systems, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Decision Sciences and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. He frequently reviews research papers for the Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences, Journal of Supply Chain Management as well as the IEEE Transactions on Engineering. In 2012 he was named MBA Professor of the Year.

Women in Business Women in Business Inaugural Event Forty students and faculty attended the inaugural Women in Business, University of Washington, Bothell event on November 10, 2012, at The Palace Kitchen restaurant in downtown Seattle. Tom Douglas Restaurants CEO Pamela Hinckley spoke at the sold-out event about taking Redhook Ale Brewery, Inc. public, starting Theo chocolates and now leading endeavors by Seattle executive chef and restaurateur Tom Douglas including 10 restaurants, four cookbooks and the Rub with Love seasoning products.

“The event was a wonderful kickoff for the Women in Business program—from the networking and inspiring speaker, to the fabulous food and hospitality of The Palace Kitchen,” said Jamie Bartalamay, Women in Business, UWB, President.

“It embodied everything we were hoping for which was to bring people together. We’re excited to continue the momentum for this new program with another event in March.”

MBA Career Management Workshop Series for UWB MBA Students The UW Bothell School of Business has launched of a series of free career management workshops in Winter 2013, designed exclusively for UWB MBA students. This series will feature three classroom workshops focused on key strategic career management topics and will offer students the opportunity to follow up with one‐on‐one meetings with a career coach to focus on specific and personalized questions and strategies.

Workshops will be presented and facilitated by Ms. Marcy Porus‐Gottlieb, with assistance from Mr. Brooks Gekler. Marcy earned her MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC‐Berkeley and has extensive experience serving as a career coach for MBA students. She has worked at the Foster School of Business and has a thriving private coaching practice. Brooks earned his MBA from the Stern School of Business (NYU) and has served in senior leadership positions at General Mills. He currently serves on several advisory boards in a wide range of industries and non‐profits and teaches at UW‐Bothell where he is an Executive‐ in‐Residence.

Students who attend the workshops will have an opportunity to consult with Marcy and Brooks on their career plans and avails of one‐ on‐one coaching sessions.

Now Open – Graduate Commons!

The primary purpose of the Graduate Commons is to support graduate education at UW Bothell by providing a comfortable drop in space for relaxation, study, and collaboration. The Graduate Commons is designed as a hub for graduate student life, enhancing academic, research, and social interactions.

What has the MBAA done for me?

Being part of the MBAA has allowed me to stretch myself in ways that I’ve never had the opportunity to before. As the VP of Marketing, it is my job to help all the other officers get the word out about their events and ideas in order to try and engage as many people in each of the cohorts as possible. Having a background in Accounting and Finance doesn’t necessarily prepare you to pull this off, and it has been a great learning experience.

Of course, there are the aspects like time management and trying to maintain some balance between work, school, home and the MBAA, but the most important thing to me is that we came into this year with a vision of developing tighter bonds between the cohorts by providing opportunities for meeting and learning outside the classroom. The hours we spend in class are a fundamentally important part of the process, but they aren’t everything. The MBAA has supplemented this by expanding the opportunities to work with and get to know the other three cohorts better.

Last spring on the study tour, our group had an incredible experience in a part of the world that I knew very little about. As much as we learned and grew personally, one of my favorite things about going on the trip are the bonds formed with people that I hardly knew before we left. That is the spirit behind the MBAA, and I hope that everyone reading this takes advantage of the opportunities they have to develop similar connections.

Fun Facts Ryan Fields, TMBA 2013 1. Building contacts in the UW program has helped me become successful in my career.

2. I married my wife Erin the weekend before my TMBA program started.

3. In my spare time I like to work on cars and do projects around the house.

4. Recently have taken up golf and improving!

5. Grew up in Naperville, IL and I transferred to Washington during my Senior year of High School.

Chris Szarek, TMBA 2013 1. I got my middle name from a waiter on the cruise ship where I was baptized somewhere between Hawaii and Vancouver BC. 2. I met Jacquelyn Smith in 1980, spent a few hours with her and had no idea who she was at the time.

3. I'm a distant blood relative of Pope John Paul II. 4. I can't stand steamed vegetables, particularly carrots.

5. I ran with the bulls once. Only once.

6. I played lead guitar for the Totally Awesome 80s band "Rubik's Cube" in Naples, Italy.

Don Wyatt, TMBA 2014 I love to ride horses and among the cool places I have ridden are Iran, Egypt, Mongolia, Austria and New Mexico.

Derek Mitchell, TMBA 2014 1. I've been known to ride a motorcycle while wearing a long, flowing red wig.

2. I once rented a Prius with the intent of getting the worst gas mileage ever........but still got 43 MPG. 3. I once held my breath underwater for two and a half minutes.

4. I've designed electronic communication systems for use in the replacement of NASA's shuttles--the Orion spacecraft.

5. I married my high school sweetheart and after 13 years we're expecting our first child.

6. One of my favorite pastimes is staging and participating in eating contests.

Professor Surya Pathak 1. Favorite moment of the day: Morning 7:00 am when I listen to music (Indian Classical) 2. Pluto the double doodle: My ardent fan and audience when I am playing the dulcimer or drums. He is always next to me. When I was learning these instruments he would move away to a different corner of the house. Now, no matter where he is sleeping he comes and lies down next to me. So I guess I am making some progress!

3. Favorite mocha bar: Dilettante on Broadway. Mochas are divine here and the chocolate to caffeine ratio can be customized, ask for the Honey coupe ice cream with candied prailinies (yum) and the Rigo Jansi or the molten chocolate cake (Decadent).

MBA IN REMEMBRANCE ~ Nathan Robert Smith Class of 2010 It is with a heavy heart that we pass on to you the very sad news that Nathan passed away on Jan 6. Apparently he suffered from a chronic illness but his passing was unexpected.

We remember Nathan as a very personable, engaged student who transformed from a (Purdue) engineer to a successful business manager; his employers recognized this and promoted him multiple times over the last three years. He attributed some of his success to the MBA education at Bothell and was an ardent supporter of the program.

He spoke at several of our information sessions and Open Houses. He also sent several of his colleagues to check out our program; right now, one of them is in the TMBA Class of 2014.

Nathan’s classmates loved him – they elected him class speaker at the June 12, 2010 graduation at the Columbia Towers Club. He once told Don and Gowri that he would always have the highest regards and affection for the faculty here and for his fellow students – and that we should call him back often to tell everyone else about how wonderful his experience here was. It is sad to think that this will not come to pass.

We have a lot of construction happening on campus now. A sports and recreation complex, UW Bothell 3 Science and Academic Building and Sarah Simonds Green Conservatory is being add!

Sports and Recreation Complex: The Sports and Recreation Complex will consist of a 2.5 acre (100,000 square foot) complex including a shared soccer and softball field, tennis courts, a basketball court and a sand volley ball court. The Sports and Recreation Complex will serve the existing student body by providing enhanced opportunities for students and recreational activities.

UW Bothell 3 Science and Academic Building: The new building will house programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It is expected to produce 1,500 construction-related jobs, more than 1,000 students and an increase in the number of STEM graduates in the Puget Sound region.

The construction area will be fenced and under construction from July 2012 through July 2014. Watch the construction with the UWB3 Webcam!

Sarah Simonds Green Conservatory: The stunning greenhouse and conservatory, which will contain a classroom, botanical laboratory and exhibit space, will be located at the north end of the campus wetlands and serve as a working educational center for UW Bothell. Dr. Gordon Green, the project’s benefactor, wanted to give back to the community where his family took root.

His vision was to create a conservatory and greenhouse that’s both accessible to the public and dedicated to the legacy of his pioneering Bothell family.
