BIG LEAGUE MAVERICKS
MAVS WIN FALL CLASSIC Former UT Arlington pitcher John Lackey pitched his Boston Red Sox to a World Series championship, the second consecutive year a former Maverick has lifted the trophy at the end of the season. Lackey became the first pitcher in MLB history to earn the clinching win for two different clubs, picking up his first in 2002 with the Los Angeles Angels.

HISTORY
The right-hander pitched 6 2/3 innings in Wednesday night’s 6-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Lackey gave up a run on nine hits, striking out five. As he departed, Lackey tipped his hat to a standing ovation in Fenway Park.

In 2013, Lackey was 10-13 with a 3.52, but earned three wins throughout the MLB playoffs and pitched in three World Series games. Lackey, recruited to play first base for the Mavericks, was given a shot at pitching by former UT Arlington coach Butch McBroom. Taking the opportunity, the rest is history as Lackey was drafted by the Angels in 1999. UT Arlington alumnus Hunter Pence was part of the World Series champion San Francisco Giants last season. Pence hit .286 (4-14) in the four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers.
