RECORDS

KNOXVILLE - Tennessee opened the game on a 19-2 run and never looked back, as the Lady Vols cruised to their 10th wire-to-wire win of the year, 83-61, over Auburn. Tennessee (21-5, 12-1 SEC) increased its first-place lead in the conference to a full game over Kentucky (11-2 SEC). Five Lady Vols scored in double figures, the seventh time this season that has occurred. Junior Meighan Simmons led Tennessee with 24 points. She also recorded a career-high five steals. Sophomore Cierra Burdick posted her fourth career double-double and third this season with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior Taber Spani tallied 16, as she knocked down 4-of-5 from trifecta land. Freshman Bashaara Graves notched her 23rd game in double figures with 14, in her 26th collegiate game. Sophomore Ariel Massengale handed out a season-high 10 assists to go along with 10 points for her first career double-double. It marked the third time this year the Lady Vols had a pair of players with double-doubles. Three-pointers were a huge story for the Lady Vols, as they hit on a seasonbest nine-of-20. The win was Tennessee’s 15th consecutive at home against the Tigers. The Lady Vols have won every game in Knoxville vs. AU since 1989. All-time the Lady Vols lead the series, 38-10. Tennessee began the game on fire, making nine of its first 12 shots, including seven in a row, extending its lead to 22-5. The Lady Vols broke the game open hitting five consecutive 3-pointers in a two-minute span. Simmons knocked down three treys on her own to give the Lady Vols that 17-point advantage. Spani added two 3-pointers in the first half while Massengale also aided the effort with a three of her own. The Lady Vols’ offense, combined with 14 Auburn miscues in the first half, allowed the Lady Vols to scored 15 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Tennessee’s largest lead of the half was 26 on a Burdick layup with 7:29 left in the first half, making it 33-7. The Lady Vols led 44-21 at halftime -- their eighth 20-point lead at halftime this season. UT shot 7-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first half -- its most 3-pointers in a half this season. Tennessee made two 3s in the second half, going 2-of-10. Spani’s 3-pointer, UT’s first in the second half after eight misses to start the period, put the Lady Vols ahead 76-47 with five minutes left. Simmons’ 3-pointer with 3:40 left ballooned the lead to 31 at 81-50.

SEC

KNOXVILLE - On “Live Pink, Bleed Orange” day at Thompson-Boling Arena, the Lady Vols sent the crowd of 14,716 home happy with an 83-64 victory over Vanderbilt. The No. 12/10 Lady Vols remained perfect all-time in home games against the Commodores, winning all 28 match-ups in Knoxville. Tennessee won its third game in a row and moved to 20-5 overall and 11-1 in the league. The Lady Vols took over first place in the SEC with the victory as Texas A&M (10-1 in the SEC) plays Kentucky on Monday night. Five Lady Vols scored in double-figures led by Meighan Simmons (17), who led UT in scoring for the 14th time this season. Freshman Jasmine Jones was an unlikely offensive source for the Lady Vols as she tallied 12 points, 10 in the first half. Sophomore Ariel Massengale added an SEC season-high 14 points, freshman Bashaara Graves added 13 while Taber Spani had 12. Vanderbilt fell to 16-9, 6-6 in the SEC. The Commodores were led by Jasmine Lister, who netted a game-high 24 points. The victory also gave the Lady Vols their 37th consecutive season with 20 or more wins. Since 1976-77, Tennessee has won at least 22 games in every season. Holly Warlick became the first head coach in the history of Tennessee women’s basketball to win 20 games in her first season at the helm. Pat Summitt went 16-8 in her first season leading the Lady Vols in 1974-75. Up by 10 at halftime, the Lady Vols came out strong in the second half, expanding the lead to 16 in a little over two minutes as Simmons finished a 3-point play with 2:13 elapsed, 49-33. The lead ballooned to 20 at 60-40 on a 7-0 run keyed by a 3-pointer from Spani with 13 minutes left. Vanderbilt got within 10 on three occasions in the final 8:40 of the game, but the Lady Vols were able to maintain the double-figure lead. Tennessee shot 55 percent from the floor including 55.9 in the second half. Tennessee held its largest lead of the first half heading into halftime as Jones knocked down jumper with nine seconds left in the half. That gave UT a 39-29 edge at intermission. It was the first double-figure lead of the game. Just prior, Jones keyed a Lady Vols 8-1 run late in the first half with back-toback jumpers giving UT a 33-24 lead with 3:51 left in the first half. Tennessee went on a 10-0 run after Vanderbilt scored the game’s first basket to lead 10-3 on an Massengale 3-pointer with less than three minutes elapsed. UT start 6-of-8 from the floor.
