A NOTE

tend to have an optimistic view of sports and athletes. Despite being aware that sports have negative aspects, I believe that through them individuals can find unity, social skills and an emotional outlet. This applies to all college sports, not just NCAA sanctioned sports. Club and intramural sports can also offer students those same three elements.

I

When the idea to renovate the basketball guide was first introduced, I was excited, albeit nervous. The basketball guide was received well by basketball fans and I was nervous to change something people had grown acustom to. But the reason for change was inclusion, something that can often be forgotten in college athletics. Whether it is an NCAA Division II sport, a club sport or an intramural, each deserves recognition.

SARAH LOESCH Sports Editor

The Shield’s hope is that with the implementation of a fall and spring edition of The Talon, an all-ecompassing atheltics guide, we can show off the wide variety of sports USI offers.

A lively group of students stands on the sidelines during soccer matches, smiling from ear to ear and waving their hands in the air. They rise from the stands during basketball games and cheer louder than any other group in the audience. That group is Archie’s Army. Formerly guised under the name Red Zone, Archie’s Army, the university’s “student section,” is changing. It’s not just the name, though. The idea of a few students representing the entire student body at athletic events is disappearing, said Alex Hoffmann, this year’s Archie’s Army president. “Over the past three years that I’ve been here, it’s been very, very invisible,” said Hoffmann, a senior radio TV major. “So I took a couple hours out of a Sunday and sat in the basement of the Rice Library and all I did for those three hours was think about what Red Zone at the time was going to be.” One thing that had to go was the name, he said. But it wasn’t just Hoff-

mann who made the decision to change the name. It had to be approved by both the administration and the Student Government Association, which is in charge of the group. Hoffmann said he decided to include the word “army” because the term means a group of people fighting for a common goal, and that’s what he wants the group to do. “It was kind of like a spark,” he said. “Archie’s Army came and then things just started falling into place.” Hoffmann ran for SGA president last year, but lost to Alexa Bueltel. The only promise he made during his campaign, he said, was that if he lost, he would focus his energy on Archie’s Army, and that’s what he’s done. “School spirit is one of those things that I’m infinitely in support of,” he said. “We’ve got thousands of students and the impact supporting our school can have on the school itself is times over.”

The greatest change Hoffman hopes to make this year is the amount of consistency – something the group lacked the last couple of years. “That’s the word that I’ve been pretty much preaching to everybody I talk to,” Hoffmann said. “Consistency in presence; consistency in numbers; consistency in how we are represented at games; and being consistent with not just one sport. Everybody knows about going to basketball games. Well, what kind of things are we doing at volleyball and soccer and softball and baseball?” Hoffmann doesn’t want the army to be one-sport focused. So far, the numbers are up this year, Hoffman said. More students than ever before attended the first meeting this fall. Hopefully, by more students getting involved, the army can make it out to more club sporting events as well, such as Quidditch and Rugby. “If you’re not going to these events, you’re missing things,” Hoffman said. “You’re missing something crazy that happened – something awesome. You missed that shot that everyone is talking about. If we can create a culture of tribalism behind the sport, then we can make an impact on not just the athletics, but the community as a whole.”

which are tempting because they are “quick and easy.” Never forget breakfast, he said. “You feel fatigued all day (if you don’t),” he said. “And then, when you get to your workout, you don’t have a reserve tank for energy.”

When Shane Seniour walks into the weight room, he displaces all worries from his mind. The men’s basketball forward let The Talon follow him through one of his Friday strength-building workouts. 1. Squats “On the squat rack you have to focus on your breath,” he said, saying as he squats down he breathes in. “After you make that move up, you want to hold that breath in so it keeps your posture straight.” Seniour listened to an Adventure Club Pandora station as he glared intensely at his reflection. On his worst workout days he will remove his man bun, letting his long golden locks fall to his shoulders. “Looking primal motivates me.”

grey Converse sneakers. “I knew I was going to be squatting, so I needed a flat base. It gives you more of a stretch in the calf.” Seniour said that leg days are the “most fun” with a sting of sarcasm on his tongue. “Everyone likes to do arms. Curls for the girls.” Staying tight in the abs and keeping broad shoulders is a good way to avoid injury. “You get mad that you’re in here and take it out on the weights.” Seniour usually has class before his workouts, so he said he always makes sure to remember to fuel up beforehand with healthy food instead of places like Burger King,

3. Dumbbell shoulder press While doing these presses, he said he has to remember to stay in the same range of motion. “Stay tight and stay even with your body.” Post-workout fuel is just as important. Usually he makes a protein shake or a wrap. “The first thing you eat within 15 to 30 minutes of a workout is what your body uses to replenish, therefore, it is vital,” he said. At the end of his workout, Seniour and his teammates crowded in a circle and shouted, “One, two, three, brothers.” “At the end of the day,” he said, “you’ve got to know that you’ll take a bullet for (a teammate) because we’re brothers.”

2. Lateral step-ups While others in the weight room sported athletic shoes, Seniour rocked a pair of PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA SMITH

MAKING THE TEAM

The soccer club begins their late afternoon practice at the intramural fields. Willie Dhafeeri, a freshman engineering major, and Khalid Alreman, a sophomore engineering major. are both neck and neck attempting to gain possession of the ball.

Students kick-start club sport to feed passion BY SARAH LOESCH The original apprehension Jacob Haines had at nine years old about soccer quickly grew into a passion. “I remember the first time just kicking around and really enjoying it,” Haines said. “The camaraderie was a big thing for me.” Haines said he remembers playing soccer in high school with friends. “You could just go out and kick a ball around,” he said, “and then you could also have this real seriousness about it where you pour out all your skill into one thing.” Haines said his passion for soccer translates into a passion for playing at his best. “I like to work toward a goal and

achieving something at all times,” he said. Haines’s original plan was to come to USI and play soccer with the men’s varsity team. “It’s sentimental to me. I just had so much time and love for the sport from high school,” he said. “I didn’t want it to just stop.” Haines was informed there was a full roster, but he was still told to try out for the team. Haines did not make the team, but said he still wanted that competitive team aspect which comes from soccer and sports. A couple years later, Haines said the idea to create a club soccer team began to develop between him and

team captain Blake Pressler. They had both tried out for the USI men’s team and had not made the final cut. “We found out this was happening to a lot of different students,” Haines said, “a lot of other students who were very skilled at soccer but maybe just couldn’t play because they don’t have enough time.” As a chemistry major, Haines said he has to devote a lot of time toward school and wanted to find a way to allow competitive play without having to practice two hours a day and play multiple games in one week. “I am here to be a student first,” Haines said, “but soccer is definite

ly a passion of mine.” Haines said the idea started between himself and Pressler, but the idea is to provide an opportunity for a large group of students who have the same issue. “We wanted to not only have that for ourselves, but for other students who are very skilled at soccer and have the passion,” Haines said, “but maybe just don’t have enough time or didn’t make the cut for the team.” Haines said during the lull between trying out for the team and beginning the process to start a club sport he participated in intramural soccer. “Intramurals were awesome,” Haines said. “They were fun, but we wanted something more.” Haines and Pressler met through soccer in the fall of 2012 when Pressler saw Haines kicking a soccer ball around at the Broadway fields. “(Pressler) was with a group of friends and he was like, ‘Hey you want to come play with us?’ and I was like. ‘Well, sure,’” Haines said. “That just sparked our friendship.” Haines said they both have similar interests and they both want to see club soccer move forward. When they began the process to start the sport they did not realize how much there would be to keep up with, Haines said. “Now we’re starting to realize this is kind of a bigger responsibility,” Haines said, “but we’re ready for it.” Haines said it would be great to come back to the university in five years and to see the club still going and having expanded. At the student involvement fair the team got two or three pages of

students interested in playing on the team. “Plugging all of those into Excell can get tedious,” Haines said. “It’s worth it to us.” Haines has three semesters left at USI and said that is one of the reasons he wants to get the club going quickly. “I want to experience it,” he said. Haines also said he is thinking of incoming freshman as well. “What if there’s another incoming freshman that has the same desire I had?,” he said. “Maybe he didn’t make the team or maybe he can’t make all the practices and stuff. I

just want to be able to provide (an opportunity) for other students.” Haines said the goal for the fall semester is to play at least one game. “We haven’t got any confirmed games yet, we are still working on that,” he said. “Whenever that happens it will be a big moment for us.” The team has talked to Bellarmine Univeristy, Southern Illinois University and Vincennes University about the possibility of setting up games with them. “We’re going to play games,” Haines said. “We want to move forward.”

MICHAEL RUSCHE, sophomore, criminal justice Q: If someone was thinking about joining the Quidditch team, but was unsure, what would you tell them? A: First thing I would do is I would ask them if they like physical sports, because if they don’t then this isn’t really the sport for you. Then I would ask them if they like to have fun, because that is the next most important thing here.

MEN’S ULTIMATE FRISBEE: DEREK BERGGREN, senior, exercise science

Q: What are some of your favorite things about being a Captain? A: The first thing that I really love about it is that every year I get to meet my new best friends. Even though they’re all freshmen, typically they are all really cool guys. They always need a friend anyway, ‛cause a lot of guys come in not knowing a whole bunch of people from around town. I was the same way my freshman year and I make a pretty big point to be someone else’s friend on the team.

WOMEN’S ULTIMATE FRISBEE: SAMANTHA STRUNK, junior, pyschology Q: What are the most important things to you about the team? A: I want the girls to have fun first, because in the rulebook one of the first rules is team spirit. I’m really apt on having fun first, but it’s not like fun takes over. We’re serious when we need to be. It’s really important to me that the girls like it and want to stay.

RUGBY: JON STINNETT, junior, business management Q: What are some of your favorite things about being a captain? A: Being able to just share my experience with everybody else and help them learn the game better. I’ve played the longest on the team, so I like to be able to take my experiences and help the other players so we can be better as a team.

The Smackers and Sackers

The Ballers

(Mostly “A”s)

(Mostly “D”s)

You’re into a more casual and relaxed form of competition. The social atmosphere of sports such as cornhole and spikeball creates a way for you stay active and engaged. While playing cornhole you can practice your hand-eye coordination with drink in clutch and, unlike golf, talking is more acceptable whether you’re smack talking or sharing words of encouragement. Spikeball is more fast-paced as you stand in a ring of friends smacking a ball into a trampolin-esque net, but the social interaction still exists.

You wish you were a little bit taller, you wish you were a baller … wait, you are a baller. You dig the more traditional teams sports. You like being cheered on by full crowds and getting down and dirty. At USI a variety of these group sports are available. Sand or court, volleyball may be your sport of hard-hitting choice. Threeon-three basketball and flag football are also offered.

The Samplers

(Combination of all letters)

The Leisurlies

(Mostly “B”s) While you may not always be enjoying lavish meals at the country club or talking politics with your chums, you can’t help but be dazzled by the sophisticated nature of golf and the lush scenery taken in while traipsing the rolling hills of a viridian course. USI offers intramural golf, disc golf and mini golf. All three are great leisure activities that still exercise your precision, legs and arms, with mild variations that include either swinging hard, tossing strategically or avoiding colorful and distracting obstacles cautiously.

The Swingers

(Mostly “C”s) You are a fast-paced swinger. As a swinger you are quick-footed with a strong upper body. You release frustrations with every powerful swing of your weapon of choice, whether it is striking a soaring sphere with a bat like in softball, sprinting across clay with your racquet in hand during a tennis match or whacking that wiffleball in a pickleball match. All of these are offered at USI.

No single sport suffices when it comes to your athletic addiction. You want to try a little of everything, whether it manifests in the form of you frantically hopping from sport to sport or just getting out there and showing support. Several intramural sport sign-up dates have already passed, so the sample platter has diminished a little bit, but there’s still time to go out and catch a game or a match.
