What Do You SIT For?

The I SIT campaign raises awareness about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation practice for college students. More and more research studies show the positive effects meditation practice has on individuals who suffer from anxiety, depression, ADHD, anger management, and the like. Meditation can be used as more than a means to "relax." The heart of I SIT explores self-growth, fosters ongoing curiosity, and questions what it means to be “whole.” For thousands of years, Eastern traditions have practiced the art of meditation and holistic health as means of cultivating wisdom, compassion, and longevity. These practices are gradually being embraced by Western culture, both socially and scientifically. This campaign invites students to co-create a presence on college campuses that embody a mindful shift in awareness. Practicing mindfulness with the support of one another will inspire the emergence of non-judgmental observation that supplements our internal wisdom. The opportunities for mindfulness practice sessions on campus are Mondays at 4 p.m. in room 131 in SOLES and Tuesdays at 6 pm in room 215 in the IPJ. The sessions include breathing exercises, restorative stretching, and guided meditations. Blankets, tea, aromatherapy, and soothing music are provided. If neither of these times are convenient, follow the Facebook page for guided meditations to practice at home, articles on current research, and other news about mindfulness in the world.

USD Hiking League The USD Hiking League offers opportunities for USD graduate and law students to hike, serve, and build community. Through hiking, we explore the natural landscapes of the San Diego area while promoting health, experiential learning, and making connections with the natural world. Through service, we act as responsible stewards of parklands and act compassionately towards the greater San Diego community as conscious recreationists and citizens. Finally, we seek to build genuine relationships in a non-professional environment between constituents from all graduate and law programs at the University of San Diego.

New Water Bottles All new and returning members will receive complimentary water bottles. They are sustainable, fun and a little retro. Simply show up for a hike to get yours.

The Joan B. Kroc School of Peace and Justice Studies is starting the spring off with change-making events aimed at racial issues, both past and present.

During the course of February 24th-26th, the Kroc School hosted their 9th Annual Border Film Week, presented by the Trans-Border Institute. Screened at the Peace and Justice Theater in the IPJ, the Trans-Border Institute presented documentary films on issues surrounding the U.S. and Latin America. According to the School of Peace Studies, the Annual Border Film Week gives “students, faculty, and our broader community the chance to explore the relationship between the U.S. and Latin America from a variety of perspectives, and to meet leading filmmakers.” Among the films presented are Stefani Saintonge’s La Tierra de los Adioses [The Land of Goodbyes] and Mauricio Bidault’s Hasta el fin de los días [Until the end of reckoning]. Both films address social issues in Mexico. On March 25, the Peace and Justice Theater will also be hosting Selma ’65: A One Woman Play from 7-9 pm. According to the Peace and Justice Studies, “Catherine Filloux brings to the stage the interconnected lives of Viola Liuzzo, a white civil rights activist shot dead after the Selma Voting March, and Tommy Rowe, an informant for the FBI who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan responsible for shooting her.” The play is performed by Marietta Hedges.

If you’re interested in attending Selma ’65, it is highly recommended that you register early because the house is expected to fill quickly. ~ Alley Jordan

Civil Rights History at the USD School of Law!

Upcoming events hosted by the USD

School of law will highlight and explore one of the most important aspects of the the Civil Rights movement: the history and continued ramifications of one of the most important landmark cases that proved a great victory for this movement, Brown v. Board of Education. A series of events w ill be held honoring and examining the d ecision, including a panel discussion and photo exhibit.

There will be a panel discussion entitled

“USD School of Law 60th Anniversary Faculty Panel on Brown v. Board of Education and Alumni Reception,” that will be held Tuesday, April 7 , 2015 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. This panel will be held in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the monumental decision, and w ill feature Vice Dean o f the law school, Mary Jo Wiggins, an esteemed author and proponent of civil rights, among other faculty members. It will be followed by a reception for the local community, judges, alumni, law students, undergraduate students and faculty. This discussion will focus on “what the decision means; what impact the decision has had, and will have o n education, race and crime; and a discussion of critical legal consciousness and transformative politics.”

The law school is also hosting a photo

exhibit entitled “Civil Rights Now! Brown v. Board of Education: A Chronological Look at its History.” This exhibit will be on d isplay from Thursday, April 2 , 2015 to Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Pardee Legal Research Center First Floor, Common Area. This exhibit likewise focuses o n the Brown decision and uses images and text to share about the history of the Brown decision. It exposes little known facts about the civil rights movement, such as that as early as 1849 African Americans fought the system of segregated education in this country.

Come take part in these events and add

to your knowledge of the history of one of the most important cases ever decided by the Supreme Court of the United States! ~Corrie Hansemn

I loved having the chance to go to the Taco Tuesday ChangeMixer on February 17! I was able to share some casual conversations about society and making positive change with my peers and some wonderful undergraduate students. Tacos and great conversation are two ingredients in a perfect recipe for bringing people together. Additionally, some of the conversations I was fortunate to have at this event reminded me of my discussions and learning from the The SOLES MCC (Master Credential Cohort)

Changemaking In reality, changemaking is loose concept. The definition of changemaking, ranges from doing a little bit every day or like they say ‘giving some k arma’ back to systematically creating a change in the society. The idea of social entrepreneurship has been around for many years however, only recently is it seriously being considered as a career option. A few years back, finding funding for social ventures was difficult, there is more awareness and information available now. If you have a great idea some places to get funding from are the Ashoka Foundation, Skoll Foundation and our very own USD V2 Pitch Competition. Sometimes, changemaking starts from having awareness that not everyone in world has the same resources as we do. To gain that perspective, here are my top 3 books to read: 1.

How to Change to W orld – David Bornstein

2.

The Price of a Dream – David Bornstein

3.

Start Something That Matters – Blake Mycoskie

As a student of business, these books have changed the way I think about life. W e should stop for a few moments and at the least become aware and be grateful for everything we have

She teaches at Northwestern University. Renaissance Dialogue: Humanities and Science: A Lecture by Stephanie Jed Wednesday, March 18, 2015 Mother Rosalie Hill Hall Warren Auditorium 7:00 pm -‐ 9:00 pm Cost: Free There is a rhetoric of embodiment in Renaissance dialogues. As readers, we perceive how concrete literary/historical personae embody ideas and positions with their voices. But Renaissance dialogues also make us aware of the role of the hand and handwriting in generating ideas, metaphors, stories, and scientific method. Exploring passages in texts by Alberti, Castiglione, Galileo and others, we will see how science and quantitative methods emerged from hands in qualitative dialogue with ink and pages and books. Just as the merchant, in Alberti’s Della famiglia, was advised to protect himself from fraud by always keeping his hands "stained with ink" and reviewing everything "always with a pen in hand," so Galileo’s scientist learned to convert the perceptual affordances of the human body into the language of mathematics – figures, shapes, numbers, algorithms, etc. Whether we are talking about subjective interpretation or objective measurement, we can look to these Renaissance texts to learn more about the conditions for creative breakthrough research in the humanities and sciences today. About the speaker: Prof. Stephanie Jed is Chair o f the Department of Literature and a scholar of early modern Italy. Author of Chaste Thinking: The Rape of Lucretia and the Birth of Humanism (1989) and Wings for Our Courage: Gender, Erudition and Republican Thought (2011), she is especially dedicated, in her current multidisciplinary research and teaching, to the social history of cognition and to our hands as they negotiate language, cognitive relations and movement. Event organized by the Italian Program and the Department Languages and Literatures with a grant from the ESFI Fund. Co-‐sponsored by the Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
