C Helpful strategies for coaches to stop this strange phenomenon First, whI-J do wmnasts develop a fear of going backwaras? 1. A scary fall or injury sustained while performing a backwards eLement.

f)~ Windee M. Weiss) ph.D.

Asst. ProFessor, School of Health , Ph!Jsical Education, & Leisure Services Universit!J of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA

s a former gymnast and coach, and now a sport psychologist, on numerous occasions I have seen young gymnasts who develop the "fear of going backwards." The causes of this phenomenon are not always clear: sometimes the gymnast crashes while performing a particular skill, whereas other times this "fear" appears seemingly out of nowhere. In many instances, this fear seems to be isolated to one particular ski ll or to one event, but in other cases this fear begins with one skill and eventually spreads li ke an unwanted virus to all events and skills that require the gymnast to go backwards. This is incredibly stressful for not only the gymnast, but also his/ her coach and parents. The strategies or "tricks" I am suggesting have worked well in the past with several gymnasts of varying ages and competitive levels in terms of reducing the amount of ti me "lost" dealing with this fear as well as helping gymnasts "lose their fear of going backwards." My hope is that the following information and strategies may help decrease the amount of time and anguish spent dealing with this all too common fear.

6

TECHNIQUE路 JULY 2006

Probably the most obvious (and easiest for coaches to understand) cause of developing a fear is when the gymnast has a fall or crash that mayor may not cause injury, but definitely scares the gymnast. 2. A break in concentration while performing a backwards eLement. Another common cause for developing a fear about a particular skill or going backwards is when the gymnast experiences a lapse in concentration while performing the skill. The gymnast may still execute the skill successfully however at some point during the skill the gymnast may have felt "out of control" or been "lost" in the air. This sensation can be fairly frightening for many gymnasts, especially if they are not aware of what caused them to feel this way. To make matters worse, many gymnasts then begin to "re-live" the experience whi le they wait their turn to go again , and/ or by telling their teammates about how "awful" the past performance felt. 3. The gymnast is experiencing stress in some aspect of his/her Life (couLd be gymnastics reLated, but this stress couLd aLso stem from family, schooL, etc.). Probably the most difficult potential cause to detect for developing a fear, especially for coaches, is the amount of stress the gymnast is experiencing. That is, if a gymnast is experiencing high amounts of stress, and if he/s he does not have adequate coping skills to deal with this increased stress, then many times the only observed behavior or outcome related to this stress that we see is development of a fear. Some causes of stress for a gymnast could be doing poorly in a class at school, arguing with their best friend or teammates, traveling demands during the competitive season, and distracting conflicts at home between parents. Potentially, this stress could lead to a break in concentration which then causes the gymnast to fear a skill. Many times even the gymnast does not understand why this is happening or even what he/ she is afraid of. Bottom line, if an individual is under stress, it will reveal itself in a change in personality, energy level, health, and sometimes, in the gym through development of a fear.

Second, what can coaches do to help minimize the effects of this fear? 1. Try to reduce the amount of stress and negative emotions associated with performing that particuLar skill or backward eLement. If a gymnast seems to be experiencing a fairly "chronic case" of fear about a particular skill or going backwards, one of the best things a coach can do is help minimize the amount of negative feelings and stress associated with a particular skill. In my coaching days, I readily admit using various types of punishment to get a gymnast to "just go" such as doubling the number of skills they had to perform, giving them strength conditioning, making them stay on that event until the assignment was complete, or even making the gymnast leave practice early. Sometimes, these strategies worked. However, for those instances where we were truly dealing with a chronic case of fear, these strategies just made the problem worse. I was increasing the stress and negative thoughts associated with that particular skill. I was making our "uphill battle" into the "climbing of Mt. Everest." Thus, I suggest trying a more positive approach to dealing with this situation. Providing encouragement, helping with problem-solving strategies, developing positive self-talk, and implementing goal-setting can all help to increase the gymnast's confidence.

ILlUSTRATIONS BY ZEhlETRIA BARNES

2. Remember, the gymnast is not "trying to do this on purpose" and this is probabLy more upsetting for him/her than it is for you. On more than one occasion, when I was coaching and now when I observe coaches in the gym, I have noticed some coaches (including myself) seem to take the "lost skill" issue personally. That is, some coaches behave and react to the situation as if the gymnast is trying to do this on purpose to drive the coach crazy. Nine times of out ten , this is definitely not the case. Losing a skill or being afraid of something can be incredibly stressful and upsetting to any gymnast resulting in several potentially health compromising behaviors: loss of sleep, loss of appetite, depression , and high anxiety. As coaches, it is our responsibility to help the gymnast through this difficult time as quickly and easily as possible.

Third, here are some "tricks" or strategies that ~ou may wantto implement with ~our~mnastwho seems fo be having problems overcoming his/her tear ot a particular skill or moving backwards. The followihg two case studies are true stones about gymnasts I have worked with that developed a fear of going backwards. I refer to these two examples as ways of illustrating the strategies used. _~S""""",,, l Julia was a 12-year-old, Level 6 gymnast. She had successfully been competing for about two months when she developed a fear of her backwalkover on high beam. She did not fall or crash, rather just one day quit performing her backwalkover. She still had not qualified to state meet so we were very concerned about getting her ready for her last two competitions prior to state meet. CASE 2: Heather was a 10-year-old, Level 8 gymnast. This was her first year competing as a Level 8 and previously as a Level 7 won state meet. Heather developed a fear of going backwards on nearly every event. Her fear began on floor while tumbling. She "balked" during a tumbling pass, which led to her no longer tumbling backwards on floor. Within a month, she could no longer perform her two backhandspring series on beam and was beginning to have problems with her flyaway dismount on bars. Later, based on conversations with both Heather and her coaches, it was revealed that Heather's parents had just divorced about 4 months prior to her problems in the gym. 1. Create a goaL-setting "Ladder" or path with the gymnast. Goal-setting can be incredibly motivational for both the coach and the gymnast. By creating a list of goals or a "pathway" for the gymnast to follow in order to perform a skill again, we can help show the gymnast how much they have achieved, how far they have left to go, and provide them with "little successes" along the way. In both instances as described above, the gymnast and I created a "ladder" with 10 rungs. On each rung was a goal concerning that particular skill. At the top of the ladder was the "ultimate goal," in the instance of Julia, the ultimate goal was to compete her backwalkover on high beam by the next invitational. So, we started out with Julia trying 10 backwalkovers on the low beam for two workouts, the following rung was stick 8 backwalkovers on a low beam and try 5 on the medium beam for two workouts. Every two workouts Julia was challenged to "move up" her backwalkover to a higher beam. The key to moving up with Julia was that her "attempts" had to count for something. We found that if she was required to "stick" a certain number of backwalkovers on the new height, she "froze up" and actually regressed. When she achieved each goal, she would receive a "cool sticker" next to that goal as a sign of her achievement. 2. Make a "scrapbook" to heLp increase positive thoughts and seLf-taLk. One of the major issues we are dealing with when it comes to fear is what the gymnast is thinking or saying to him/herself about the skill. Many times our own minds and thoughts are our own worst enemy. Thus, in order to get both Julia and Heather to change what they thought about these skills, we had them make a "scrapbook." Each day, 10 times a day, at random times, the gymnasts had to

write down on a scrap of paper: the date, the time, and a positive affirmation statement. For Julia, the first week she had to write "I look forward to working on backwalkovers on beam" and Heather wrote, "I enjoy doing backhandsprings." These statements were chosen to get the gymnasts to at least think 10 times per day something positive about performing these skills. The gymnasts brought their scraps to workouts each day (or whenever they had practice), we then taped/ glued the scraps to fun construction paper decorated with stamps and stickers for each day. Thus, we began building their book made of scraps. After the first week, the statement for Julia was changed to "I am good at backwalkovers on high beam" even though she still was not performing the skill yet at that height. For Heather, we changed her statement to ''I'm good at tumbling backwards." Eventually, both gymnasts actually began "believing themselves" in terms of these statements. This will not necessarily fix the overall problem, but at least we are not fighting against their negative thoughts and attitudes toward the skill. 3. Keep the gymnast going backwards at something-even if you must resort to very beginner LeveL skills. One of the best things we can do for our gymnasts is to keep them going backwards or performing the skill somewhere-even if it is just the low beam or a line on the floor. For those who are afraid of going backwards, it is important to keep them going backwards as much as possible in order to prevent losing any more skills. So, because Heather was having so many difficulties with tumbling and multiple backward skills, every day she began her practices with 10 backward rolls, 15 backwalkovers, 20 standing backhandsprings, and 20 standing back tucks. As she felt more comfortable and less stressed, we added connections of two back handsprings, then three back handsprings, and so on. Eventually, we were able to add the back tuck after one back handspring. Even though she still was not performing her high level tumbling skills, each day that she was able to "add" a skill or make the pass more difficult, she felt like she was accomplishing something. Thus, she came to workouts the following day more motivated to do better than the day before. 4. As a Last resort, find temporary soLutions or aLternative skills for that gymnast. As a coach, I hated to find "alternative" skills that a gymnast was willing to perform. However, in the instance when an individual is so scared of going backwards that workouts have become a stagnant, uphill battle, it may be worth it for you to reconsider your gym rules. This becomes a little trickier with your compulsory level gymnasts where you can not modify without serious deductions, however with your optional level gymnasts you have some room to play with. For Heather's upcoming competition we modified her tumbling passes on floor to go forwards, and changed her beam series to frontwalkover-round off. Heather understood that these were only "temporary" changes, and she was allowed to compete as long as she kept up her end of the bargain in terms of her "scrapbook" and reaching the goals on her goal-ladder. Overall, the combination of these strategies helped Julia and Heather. Within one month, Julia was back up on high beam, competing her Level 6 routine and qualified to state meet. For Heather, the overall progression probably took about 6 weeks, but she had not been tumbling backwards for at least two months prior. By allowing Heather to compete or perform other skills that fulfilled special requirements, this decreased the stress she was experiencing. With lower stress levels, Heather was able to control her thoughts and approach her backwards tumbling more positively. Eventually, Heather began to tumble backwards again. That is, she performed a lot of power hurdle tumbling passes because if we added the run before the round-off too soon, she seemed to get scared again . However, with patience Heather competed and performed beautifully at state meet. X JULY 2006 • TECHNIQUE

here is still time to make plans to celebrate National Gymnastics Day 2006 on August 5. The theme for 2006 is a celebration of fitness . Nearly 400 clubs have already submitted their plans for National Gymnastics Day celebrations by logging onto the USA Gymnastics website (see address at bottom of article). Activities can range from open houses, to the Tyson Fitness Challenge, to demonstrations at the mall or local fair, or whatever works in your community. If you need ideas, check out the website to see what others are doing, or create your own unique celebration. The goal of National Gymnastics Day is to increase visibility for our sport and, of course, attract new students to your club. USA Gymnastics is proud to have launched the Tyson Fitness Challenge on the Today show on June 13. Bela Karolyi was the lead spokesperson and did a great job of promoting the sport of gymnastics and encouraging parents to call their local gymnastics club.

T

In addition, USA Gymnastics is working with NAPS which provides an easy, cost-effective method of getting our story out to nearly every newspaper in the country. USA Gymnastics created an article entitled, "Gymnastics provides a great fitness option for to day's kids," and this article was sent to more than 10,000 newspapers in America with over 225 million in cumulative circulation. NAPS offers the potential to reach a greater portion of the 300 million people living in the U.S. Thanks to the many dub owners who requested a signed proclamation from their governor declaring August 5 National Gymnastics Day in their state. Once USA Gymnastics has received a copy of your state's proclamation we will post it on our National Gymnastics Day website for you to download and display at your event. For more information on National Gymnastics Day please go to: http ://www. usa-gymnastics.org/events/2006/ngd/ (below). X

BUSINESS

Importance of Leadership A FRIEND AND TWO-TIME BOOT CAMP graduate, John Muno, gave me a photocopied page that he keeps with him from a decade old Boot Camp manual. I recognized the words immediately as my own; they are as appropriate today as they were then. I re-keyed the document in order to share it with you .

On Leading Others Certainly no regrets, but had I understood one simple message earlier in my gym club career, I would have been years ahead in the growth of my various businesses, not to mention having saved heaps of personal frustration. I hope that this message can help you. The message is so simple that you do not have to learn any details or 'techniques: You must merely make a decision to adopt the message as a 'universal truth'-a personal belief-and watch as you evolve new techniques based on your new belief. (Note: in fact, I believe any other approach to changi ng behavior will ultimately be wasted effort.) THE SIMPLE MESSAGE IS THIS: Push the learning of EVERY professional skill (marketing, coaching, spotting, financial analysis, etc.) down your personal priority ladder until this one foundational skill becomes the center of your professional

focus: LEADERSHIP, the ability to influence others toward the accomplishment of a worthy goal. This message is simple, but what a difficult task it is for most! It's all the more reason to tackle the area of leadership! If leadership were easy, everybody would be good at it. Remember, successful people do the things unsuccessful people don't want to do. In the gymnastics industry, no matter whether you are a coach, manager or owner, the 5% who accept the challenge and become a skillful leader will leave the other 95% behind. I've personally experienced it and witnessed it many times over. I'm sure of it today more than I was yesterday. The business and coaching world belongs to those who have mastered leadership. Believe it and place leadership at the center of your focus. Congratulations on your accelerated career.

Self-Concept Of A Leader "I see myself as the captain of the ship. As captain, my highest responsibility is to the fulfillment of our high goal. My most important task is to influence my crew to willingly sacrifice their personal energy and utilize their unlimited ingenuity in order to reach our high goal. There is no question in my mind that any failure to reach our goal

~ -I llf)f)'I' ~ Small Business

4 (~l'~~!~

will not be a factor of my crew's abilities or desire to perform but, rather, of my own mistakes in leading. I am comfortable in knowing that I am solely responsible for meeting our goal and, one way or another, we will succeed and all who contributed to the achievement will grow because of the effort." The above paragraph might epitomize one leader's concept of self. Within the paragraph are many subtle messages which can only be listed here, due to space. At Congress, each message will be discussed individually and at length! (NOTE: for this manuscript, limited space made it necessary far me ta chaase between writing abaut the specifics of the talk and skipping the generalities, ar vice versa. In the name of doing the greatest good for those reading, but not attending the talk, I opted for the latter.) X

EDUCATION USA Gymnastics 2006 KAT and MELPD Workshop An Educational Opportunity For Your Club A KAT workshop consists of seven productive hours of preschool teacher education. The wo rkshop covers philosophy, understanding the preschool-age child, safety considerations, class management and much more! A Movement Education and Lesson Plan Development Workshop (MELPD) consists of five enlightening hours of preschool teacher education. This workshop is continuing education of the KAT Program. The overall emphasis of this works hop is to provide instructors with the necessary knowledge to deve lop preschool gymnastics lesson plans, emphasize developmentally appropriate

practices, fundamental skill development, and much more. This workshop is designed to help instructors meet the needs of the individual students and encourage adoption of lifelong physical activity. Attendance at a KAT certification course is highly reco mmended, but not required to attend a MELPD course. If there has never been a KAT or MELPD works hop in your area, 2006 is a great time to host a worksho p. Any club can host a wo rkshop and it's free. The only things you'll need are an empty room and a TV & VCR. If yo ur works hop has 12 paid participants, your

2. ELITE SPORTSWEAR/GK REPORT President Sallie Weaver asked for any constructive criticism of the apparel provided to the JO National athletes, and also for any suggestions in regards to the placing of orders at the Regional meets. The committee thanked GK for once again making the athletes feel special by outfitting them with beautiful leotards and warm-up uniforms. Sallie also asked about the apparel for alternates. The committee requested that we continue the same procedures as we have currently; that is, GK will provide apparel for the first alternate only. First alternates that are present at the competition may pick up the apparel and be with the team on the competition floor. If the first alternate is not present at the competition, GK will use that apparel for any problems with sizing for the competitors and will later send the 1st alternates' full apparel to Connie Maloney at the National office for distribution. Second alternates will not be provided apparel unless an injury to one of the 7 qualifiers causes the first alternate to be added to the meet and the 2nd alternate moves into the first alternate slot. If the 2nd alternate moves into the 1st alternate slot after GK has shipped the apparel to the meet site, they will not be able to supply the apparel, even if thi s individual attends the meet. The committee discussed the idea that was previously approved that the regions have the same co lor scheme for four years. There was discussion on whether a two year time frame would be better. This issue will be brought to the Admini strative Committee meeting at National Congress.

3. NCAA REPORT Mark Cook reported that the collegiate season went well in regards to the judging assignment system. A few concerns regarding the evaluation process included: • Direct connections on beam • Concern about athletes performing back tucks instead of layouts • Considering using lines for distance and direction on vault • More judges' education for the collegiate program Mark was informed that the joint committee was going to address so me of the same concerns at this meeting. Kathy Kelly asked Mark about the possibility of USA Gymnastics conducting a Future Collegiate Gymnast Showcase on the Friday evening after the JO Nationals training. The JO coaches are requesting that USA Gymnastics offer this to allow the alternates and other High School Juniors and unsigned Seniors an opportunity to be seen by the collegiate coaches, as well as be present at the JO Nationals to support their teammates. This would also reduce the travel time for the coaches, as they would not need to travel to another meet on another weekend. It would also allow for more flexibility in travel plans for clubs with high school Juniors and Seniors, si nce they know how many airline tickets to book, etc., regardless if their gymnasts qualified to Nationals.

4. ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE REPORT Kathy Kelly reported that the National Administrative Committee held an unofficial meeting at JO Nationals since seven of the nine members were present in Oklahoma City. The committee members are preparing for the revisions to the Women's Rules and Policies. The RACe's requested that their annual meeting be conducted at JO Nationals and another at the State Chair Workshop .

5. PRE·ELlTE COMMITTEE REPORT Kathy reported that the new "Hopes" division has been implemented as a bridge between the Talent Opportunity Program (TOP) and Pre-Elite. Information can be obtained by calling your Regiona l Preelite Committee Chairman or by checking the TOP page on the USA Gymnastics website (www.usa-gymnastics.org/ women/ tops/ hopes)

6. RULES & POLICIES Inappropriate Attire: Reminder that only one pair of stud earrings (one per ear) is allowed. No change to the present rules was recommended at this time. Page 13 Change wording under II. Gymnast is obligated to: J. Be we ll groomed in her appearance: #3. No jewelry, with the exception of one pair of stud earrings (one in each ear). Page 21, bullet at top of page: Recommendation to change the wording to: If due to religious reasons or valid extenuating circumstances, a gymnast is unable to compete with her designated age group, she may compete on another day (or in another session) with the approval of the SACC. State Championships, #5 Recommendation to change the wording to include Level 8 for direct entry into the state meet based upon the previous year's Regional score. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: J. Bowse Second: D. Witenstein PASSED Page 44, J. l.b Inquiry Regulations Recommendation to add the "flat" (not "up to") specific compositional deductions to the list of items upon which an inquiry can be based. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: C. Jarrett Second: L. Johnson PASSED Page 38, Meet Format & Chart Recommendation to add the following for Levels 1-3: Open warm-up of 15-30 minutes. Maximum of 30 second timed warm-up (the meet format must be published in the meet information) Considering the ages of the athletes at these levels, it is recommended that the session be no longer than 21/2 hours in length, including warm-up time. Effective August 1, 2006: Motion: P. Padron Second: M. Dykes PASSED

GENERAL PROCEDURES & DEDUCTIONS FOR COMPULSORY & OPTIONAL COMPETITION 7. SIGNALS, VERBAL CUES FOR COMPULSORY AND OPTIONAL COMPETITION Recommendation that, if the gymnast is competing on the apparatus and the coach instructs her by giving specific information on what to do during the routine (for example - what comes next in the routine or to repeat a missed requirement), the deduction of 0.20 is taken from the average without warning. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: M. Dykes Second: D. Houlton PASSED

8. TIME FRAME FOR CHANGING A SCORE Recommendation that once the final average score is submitted to the scoring system, it may not be changed unless an inquiry results in a score change. Inquiries must be submitted within 5 minutes of the end of the rotation. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: C. Christensen Second: L. Reid PASSED

9. TIMING OF TOUCH WARM·UPS JO Code of Points: Page 7, 5a), 3rd bullet -The timer ideally should be a rated official. If not, an official should oversee the timing of touch warm-ups. If the gymnast is preparing for a skill or a dismount when time is called, she may continue to finish the skill and/or dismount without penalty. If a gymnast fails to leave the apparatus after "time" has been called, the Chief judge must warn the gymnast by announcing "Time exceeded." If the gymnast remains on the apparatus, the Chief Judge deducts 0.20 from the average score. For JO Nationals, the format for warm-ups will be addressed at the coaches meeting. No warm-ups are allowed between competitors on Floor Exercise.

to the State (or Regional) Championships, the coach may submit an inquiry for the gymnast's lowest scoring event (i.e., the coach may inquire on the first event score at the end of the competition) in order that the athlete be considered for qualification purposes. Any change of score is official and would be included in the official results. This process does not apply • for mobility purposes, or • if qualification to the state or regional meet is by percentage or designated number per age group. Motion: L. Johnson Second: M. Elfenbein PASSED A member requested a roll call vote: In favor: A. Schweyer, J. Bowse, D. Witenstein, L. Mulvihill, L. Reid, L. Thorberg, D. Houlton, C. Christensen, P. Panichas, M. Elfenbein, L. Johnson, M. Dykes, P. Padron. Opposed: T. Koll, C. Bunge, C. Jarrett, L. Goldsmith

11. UNEVEN BARS FALL TIME FOR COMPULSORY & OPTIONAL COMPETITION Recommendation to increase the fall time on bars to 45 seconds. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: P. Padron Second: M. Dykes PASSED

12. WARM·UPS ON FLOOR EXERCISE Depending upon the specific format used for the competition, there are a variety of ways to conduct the floor exercise warmups (either timed or touch warm-ups). In situations in which the athletes warm-up between routines, there may be times, especially with compulsory competition, that there is not adequate time "between" routines to allow for adequate warm-up. The committee requested that a statement be added to the Rules and Policies which recommends that if the coach feels that the athletes have not had adequate warm-up time between routines, he/ she can request of the Chief Judge to either have a short block of ti me for a squad or partial squad of gymnasts to warm-up, or for the judges to slow down to allow for up to 30 second between exercises, especially for Levels 4 and below.

COMPULSORY CONCERNS 13. JUDGES FEE SCALE FOR LEVELS 1·3 COMPETITIONS Recommendation that the hourly judging fee for a professional member who is not a rated official and is assigned to judge a sanctioned Level 1-3 competition may be negotiated by the meet director. The negotiated fee may not exceed the hourly rate for a Level 5/6 judge. If the State Administrative Committee organizes a statewide Level 1-3 competitive program, the State Administrative committee may designate an hourly rate for a non-rated professional member to maintain consistency. Effective August 1, 2006 Motion: C. Jarrett Second: L. Goldsmith PASSED

14. LEVEL 4 VAULT Recommendation to allow an unfolded panel mat to be placed on top of the uppermost surface of the mat stack/resi-pit surface if necessary to provide a more stable landing surface. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: J. Geddert Second: C. Christensen PASSED

10. SCORE REVIEW AT SECTIONAL AND STATE MEETS

her to cast immediately, the 0.30 deduction for failure to execute a small cast immediately after the front hip circle is applied. The gymnast is not required to perform the small cast at this point since she has already lost the opportunity to perform the cast immediately. If the gymnast does perform the cast, there is no deduction for extra swing. Levels 1-4 Bars - Pullover Mount: Recommendation to appLy a 0.30 deduction for suppLementary support if the gymnast pulls up to the bar and rests the chin on the top of the bar prior to pulling the hips over the bar. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: C. Christensen Second: M. Dykes PASSED Level 4 Bars: Clarification of the deduction for Springboard on unauthorized surface after the mount - 0.30 Level 4 must remove the mounting apparatus (board or mat) immediately after the jump to glide. Level 1-5 Back Hip Circle: Recommendation for LeveLs 1-5 Bars to change the deduction for "failure to maintain hip or upper thigh contact on bar throughout back hip circle" from flat 0.20 to "Up to 0.20". Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: C. Bunge Second: L. Thorberg PASSED

17. COMPULSORY FLOOR EXERCISE Recommendation to add a 0.30 deduction for a stop between eLements in an acro series in a CompuLsory Floor Exercise. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: L. Johnson Second: D. HouLton PASSED

OPTIONAL CONCERNS 18. REGIONAL COMPETITIONS: The committee discussed problems with regional meets in terms of formats, numbers, etc. Connie emphasized that these meets are under the direction of the RAC and that the meet director must follow the guidelines set forth by the RAe. In order to insure that the meet director understands his or her responsibilities, the RAC should provide the meet director with specific format information in the form of a contract or regional meet handbook. It was stated that Region 8 has used this method in the past and Connie will ask Deb Kornegay to share it with other the regions so they can adapt it to their specific meets.

19. GENERAL EXECUTION DEDUCTIONS Clarification regarding "Failure to land on the feet first" on vault, on UB and BB dismounts, and on acro elements on Beam and Floor: If the gymnast lands on her hands and soles of feet simultaneously, a deduction of 0.5 for the fall is applied . • Vault will be scored. • Value part is awarded. Recommendation to make the following changes in the JO Code of Points for OptionaL competition. Effective August 1, 2006. Under "Landing deductions for aLL eLements and vauLts": Add to Large fauLts: "Brush/touch the Landing surface with one or both hands (no support) "Up to 0.30" Under Very Large FauLts on pages 15, 25, 67, 146, and 242: Change the wording to "FaLL on mat to knee(s) or hips" Motion: L. MuLvihill Second: L. GoLdsmith PASSED

16. COMPULSORY BEAM Recommendation to add a 1/2 (180°) pivot turn following the ScaLe in the LeveL 5 beam routine. Effective August 1, 2006. Motion: P. Panichas Second: L. GoLdsmith PASSED Note: Page 99 of the Compulsory book will be revised and posted on the we b site, under Women's Program , also under the Judges' page and the JO page. Compulsory Beam time limit: The committees discussed correspondence requesting that 10 seconds be added to the time limit for the Leve l 4, 5, and 6 beam routines. The choreographers expressed that once the coaches become more familia r with the desired rhythm of the exercise, the gymnasts will be able to complete the routine within the prescribed time limit. The committee will follo w up with a video of a gymnast performing the exercise with proper rhythm and data will be collected regarding the average times for each leve l. No action was taken at this time.

20. ADDITIONS TO JR. OLYMPIC CODE OF POINTS The committee requested that the following items be added to the JO Code: • Illustrations of jumps/ leaps included in the Technique section of the old FIG Code of Points • Embellishments of the descriptions of routine content li sted under Composition, as described in the old FIG Code. ~
