The Tradition
USC Upstate boasts a widely successful athletics program, one that has achieved tremendous success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. From the early days as a two-year institution all the way to today as a member of NCAA Division I athletics, USC Upstate athletics has a proud history of success. The men’s basketball program claimed the 1982 NAIA National Championship and the university’s other athletic teams built a strong foundation. USC Upstate moved its athletic teams to the NCAA and Division II status in 1990. In 18 years in Division II, Upstate made 31 appearances in NCAA Tournaments, won 21 Peach Belt Conference regular season championships and 18 Peach Belt Conference Tournament titles. In 2007, the athletics program moved to the NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference. Playing at the highest level of amateur athletics in the nation, Upstate athletes continue to excel. The women’s tennis and softball teams have each captured conference crowns and 33 student-athletes captured the conference’s weekly honors and 29 student-athletes were placed on All-Atlantic Sun Conference teams.
