Today, the Charter is the foundation of international peace and security, and is more relevant than ever as nations become increasingly interconnected and interdependent.

Among other things, the Charter establishes the purposes and principles of the United Nations; sets out how countries become member States; establishes the principal organs of the United Nations and how they function and with which powers; draws a new architecture for the pacific settlement of disputes; and directs what action must be taken in cases of threats to peace, breaches of peace, and acts of aggression.

In drafting the Charter after World War II, countries had unaids.org various interests. Old empires were on the decline and a new age was on the horizon, with the advent of independent states throughout the colonial world. The Charter aimed to protect future generations from the scourge of war and strive for the advancement and prosperity of humankind.

It was drafted in San Francisco by some 5020countries Avenue Appia representing five continents and was signed on 26 June CH-1211 Geneva 27 Switzerland 1945, paving the way for the creation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.
