HONORS PROGRAM
For academically ambitious and talented students, the Helen Hardin Honors Program combines the best of a small liberal arts school with the opportunities of a large, nationally recognized research university. With more than 1,600 students enrolled, the Honors program is entering its 39th year. A record number of freshman students were accepted in Fall 2010, with more than 18 percent of the class scoring 30 or higher on the ACT. The program includes enriched Honors courses, interdisciplinary seminars, independent study, an Honors thesis or creative project, and conversations with visiting scholars. Honors courses are discussion-based classes that emphasize writing and problem solving, as well as critical and creative
thinking. Honors students can also participate in nationally recognized undergraduate research conferences and extend their learning through internships and public service. In the last several years, U of M Honors students have won such highly prestigious scholarships as the Truman Scholarship, the Goldwater Scholarship, the Fulbright Scholarship and the Rotary Scholarship, among others. The University of Memphis offers two programs that bring undergraduate students together who have common academic pursuits. The U of M’s Living Learning Communities program allows students to not only attend class and study together, but to live together as well. Living Learning Communities are available for Honors students, women majoring in engineering, ROTC students, those majoring in architecture and design, music scholars, Emerging Leaders, those interested in foreign languages and cultures, and a Freshmen First group. A new Living Learning Residence Complex opened in Fall 2010. Freshmen First participants live together and share their experiences as freshmen. Residence Life provides a variety of programs to help these students succeed, including study skills, movie nights, cookouts, recreational tournaments, community service projects, safety awareness and more. Research confirms that Living Learning Community students become more engaged in their studies and their college lives, have higher GPAs, successfully complete more hours in less time, and continue on their programs of study at a higher rate. Research Both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to participate in research projects. Undergraduates do so through their participation in the Helen Hardin Honors Program. An undergraduate research database exists online to match students and their interests with researchers in all fields at the U of M. These opportunities to work with faculty on key research projects give students invaluable experience and allow them to participate in a “real world” application of their knowledge. Some current areas of research that undergraduate students participate in include: biology, chemistry, communication, psychology, counseling, educational psychology and research, earth sciences, electrical and computer engineering, health and sport sciences, political science, and women’s and children’s health. Graduate students become involved with research projects primarily through their interactions with faculty.

Creative and Professional Writing If writing is your preferred form of expression, then you’ll want to enroll in either the creative or professional writing programs offered through the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to the bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in creative writing, the university also offers a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. Professional writing degrees are also offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The U of M faculty include many published authors.
Visual and Performing Arts The visual and performing arts disciplines are found within our College of Communication and Fine Arts (CCFA). These include studies through our Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and the departments of architecture, art, communication and journalism, as well as theatre and dance. Many of our alumni have made their way to national and international stages after graduation as actors, opera singers, filmmakers, music producers, costume designers and directors.
