Practical information

The academic year The academic year at the UiS runs from mid- August to mid-June. It is divided into two semesters (autumn and spring).

Admission and applications Application deadlines vary in accordance with the programme concerned. Exchange students: 1 May for the autumn semester and 1 November for the spring semester. (1 April and 1 October for students in Social Work and Nursing). International master’s programmes 30 November for programmes commencing in August of the following academic year. Norwegian Language and Culture programme 30 November for programme commencing in August of the following academic year.

QUOTA SCHEME The UiS offers a limited number of scholarships through the Quota Scheme to students from developing countries and countries in eastern Europe, the western Balkans and central Asia. Only students from partner institutions may apply. For more information, please check www.uis.no/quota. COST OF LIVING All applicants should be able to document financial means equivalent to full funding by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund at the current rate. For the 2012-2013 academic year, this amounts to NOK 92 500. Only half that amount is required for those planning to study for a single semester. This amount does not include travel expenses to and from Norway, but should cover all living costs while in the country.

Language requirements All applicants must document their knowledge of English with sufficient scores in one of the following tests:

Applications are submitted online at www.uis.no/admission. After initial screening, qualified applicants are asked to send the required documentation to the International Office.

- Test of English as a Foreign Language (ETS TOEFL®) with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 80 (internet-based). For more information, see www.ets.org/. ETS scores are valid for two years after the test date. The test report must be valid at the time the electronic application is submitted.

International students who already live in Norway and speak Norwegian fluently can apply via the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (Samordna Opptak) before 1 March for the academic year commencing the following August.

- International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), with a minimum total score of 6.0. For more information, see www.ielts.org/. IELTS test scores are valid for two years after the test date. The test report must be valid at the time the electronic application is submitted.

Costs and scholarships

TUITION FEE Norwegian universities do not charge tuition fees. However, all students must pay a semester fee of about NOK 700 per semester. SCHOLARSHIPS No scholarships are available for students on the Norwegian Language and Culture programme and the undergraduate degree programmes.

Exchange students are not required to submit a test report, but they need a good command of English. For information about exemption from language testing for other student categories, visit www.uis.no/admission.
