European Master of Art in Migration and Intercultural Relations 120 ECTS

Two-year programme

About the programme In the 21st century, migration processes increasingly contribute to the shaping of societies. The presence of migrants consequently adds emphasis to intercultural relations and communication, which are of key importance for social cohesion. The European Master of Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) responds to this trend by providing a state-of-the-art education in theoretical concepts, empirical methods and trans-disciplinary approaches to migration studies. The EMMIR has been jointly developed by seven institutions: - University of Oldenburg, Germany - University of Stavanger, Norway - University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic - University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia - Ahfad University for Women, Omdurman, Sudan - Makerere University Kampala, Uganda - Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Uganda. The programme is administered by the University of Oldenburg, and students must commence their studies in Germany. After the first semester, they can decide where they will go on exchange to other partner institutions. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND CONTENT The Master of Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations is a twoyear full-time programme with a blended learning approach – in other words, ICT-supported distance learning elements combined with onsite teaching and student and teacher mobility. During the programme, the student must present individual coursework papers, complete an internship and conduct research as the basis for a thesis of 30 ECTS. They must earn credits from a minimum of three of the awarding institutions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of the programme, graduates will have acquired a detailed overview of historical and contemporary migration processes, their structures and their consequences, as well as expert knowledge in specific areas. They will also be able to make critical evaluations of categories of and approaches to migration research, and to apply these in a reflective manner, to define problems and research questions, and to design and conduct research projects independently. In addition, they will acquire competence in teamwork in intercultural and transcultural contexts, and in handling new media and communication technologies.
