This course will cover the necessary cooperation and interaction that occurs between various law enforcement agencies and c ommunities or popu lations t hey s erve, g iving s pecial c onsideration t o c ustoms, r ace, gender , an d u nique c ircumstances. In addition, students will c onsider et hical and accepted standards found within various enforcement organizations. Topics include ethical decision-making; social change, subcultures, values and norms, cultural diversity, citizen involvement in justice issues, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to apply ethical considerations to the decision making process in various law enforcement situations. This course covers judicial structure, process and procedure from incident to disposition kinds and degrees of evidence, and the rules governing admissibility of evidence in court. Topics include consideration of state and federal courts, arrest, search and seizure laws, exclusionary and statutory rules of evidence, court systems and other related issues. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and discuss; procedures necessary when establishing a lawful arrest/search, proper judicial pro cedures, a dmissibility of evidence, selected ap plications of the l aw, t he b asic pr ocedure of t he United States Constitution and Bill of Rights, and rights/procedures as Interpreted by the courts. Federal, state and local governments pass laws to protect natural resources and the environment. But these laws mean nothing without compliance. This does not happen automatically, but is the result of efforts by the government to encourage and c ompel s uch c ompliance. I n t his c lass, s tudents w ill di scuss t hose v arious ef forts and the es sential rol e t he enforcement officer plays in making those efforts a success. After taking this class students will be familiar with the policy and l egal issues raised by environmental and natural resource enforcement, as well as the practical Issues faced by the enforcement officer in the field. Topics include hands-on laboratory work, crime scene incident processing, information gathering techniques, collection and preservation of evidence, preparation of appropriate reports, court presentations, and other related areas. Upon completion, students should be able to identify, explain, and demonstrate the techniques of the investigative process, report preparation, and court presentation.
