ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist JoNerZ (Jonathan Baldwin). Childhood nickname and brand. A transplant to Maui nearly 18 years ago from Carbondale Colorado, JoNerZ left the Rocky mountains at the age of 18 to pursue the sand and surf of Hawaii and find new inspiration for his art. Along with the fun and wonder of the islands, came the challenges, pressures and opportunities of life, including raising his family with artist wife Lynn and making a living on Maui. Working in various fields ranging from waiter to loan officer and eventually owning and operating a Kihei landscaping company, nearly 15 years passed before again finding his artistic groove. In 2010 JoNerZ stumbled upon, almost out of frustration, the signature look and life of the art he has become known for today. Out of necessity and a desire to move away from landscaping as a profession, JoNerZ began producing a line of women’s shirts and hats with his art as the focal points to sell locally on Maui. The demand has grown on Maui and now internationally for not only new apparel but for his original artwork and commission work as others continue to share the love of his unique Wide Eyed artwork that mixes surf art, pop surrealism, street art and a little animation all with influences of the environment around him. He calls it New School Pop Surrealism. As a father of 3 boys, JoNerZ often says “it is because of this I paint mostly girls. I think it evens things out around the house a bit for my wife.” JoNerZ and his family live, work and play in Kihei, Maui. He is currently an artist in Residence at the Four Seasons Wailea and is represented by Na Pua Galery at the Grand Wailea. JoNerZ and his wife Lynn are very involved with the local handmade community on Maui and can be met at many of the island’s outdoor events and festivals.

Beauties

By Lar issa Treese

Floating above another world, bustling around below, keeping our visual attention. Snorkeling is one of the most popular things to do on the Hawaiian Islands, and with good reason. We become guests to another world, beautiful parts of nature we cannot understand yet love to study, observe and enjoy on all levels. The movement of fish may initially catch our eye, yet at a closer and more individual look at each animal, we notice other things. Among the reef, fish need to have vibrant colors to help them hide in their colorful surroundings…sponges and coral possessing all the colors of the rainbow.

------------------------------------------

73

Have you ever wondered why fish have the colors and patterns that they do? Lines, bold spots, shades of every color we mimic in our paint swatches, they actually have a purpose and meaning in nature. Fish can use their striking beauty as a camouflage to hide themselves or to break up their body shape, to attract a mate, or as a form of communication or warning. There may be a false eye spot to confuse a predator. Travelling deeper into the ocean, some light wavelengths are lost, which affects color. Some fish actually change color to blend in with their surroundings. Certain species even have females that change into males when needed, becoming more bold and striking in their color to lead their new harem. It is no wonder why we observe and learn so much from nature, although it’s a little reversed in our world. We live in a domain where the females paint themselves a variety of colors, making sure they smell a certain way, strut around on display. But the animal kingdom arguably has it right‌male seahorses incubate and carry the eggs, male Emperor penguins care for their egg while the female goes out to eat. Male birds display wide amounts of color and dances for the female, and in some fish the males are the ones with dynamic features and patterns. Artists can find inspiration just by observing the beauty of their own backyard, whether it is on land or in the ocean, picking up colors and new patterns if they take in the moment and their surroundings. The splendor of nature is so startling yet sublime, with a purpose worth realizing, and it is just as important for us to be as individual as the natural beauty we are incorporated with.

Freelance Makeup Artist By Lani Morris

Jessica has such a special eye for beauty and style.

I first met Jessica through a makeup class she held at her studio in Haliimaile, Maui. She is so talented, knowledgable and beautiful! It was supposed to be a makeup application class, but it slowly turned into her patiently giving each one of us in the class our own personal makeover. She is very gifted, and even more lovely and welcoming. I had the great pleasure of interviewing her for this special issue of Fashion and Beauty, featuring some of Maui’s most talented artists in the industry. Jessica has been a freelance makeup artist for 18 years. She studied art and fashion design at Fort Lewis College and at the University of Hawaii. She worked at the first MAC cosmetics location on Maui and received the most incredible training. For four years she worked with the company, flying to training seminars and being fortunate enough to train with artists coming straight from fashion week in New York and Paris, demonstrating the top, cutting edge looks. Jessica has such a special eye for beauty and style. The looks she creates are very whimsical, but also inspired by fresh clean lines. Very dewy and natural, her goal is to enhance who you already are, so when someone sees you, they see YOU, not the makeup. Jessica describes this gift of beauty as an expression of her faith. She feels deep gratitude for her talents, which allow her to transcend beyond just a regular “makeup application.” Jessica experiences great joy in serving her clients in a loving and nurturing way.

Turning ordinary into exceptional...

When I asked Jessica where she gets her inspiration she stated “everywhere!” Her husband always jokes that “she lives her life in a photo shoot,” utilizing images in everyday life to manifest beauty. “Turning ordinary into exceptional, trash into treasure.” And when you see Jessica’s work it is evident that she is a true artist, for her work is just that, exceptional! We chatted about the beauty industry today, and her feelings and thoughts around the topic. She feels the beauty industry has really not been a source of inspiration for her, but thankfully we are moving away from seeing models which are examples of the “Barbie doll” type beauty and more into quirkier looking girls with different, interesting qualities in their features, such as spaces between teeth, ethnicities, and CURVES! In terms of Jessica’s favorite makeup products she has a wonderful bag of tricks for everyone! Her most used makeup line is MAC. She also uses Stila, Benefit, Nars, Stainiac, Makeup Forever, and also has drug store brand favorites such as NYX. It’s hard for a makeup artist such as Jessica to commit to one line exclusively. She pulls from her bag of tricks all sorts of products from many different lines. She has great tips, tricks and recommendations for her clients on a budget, as well as her high-end Chanel type clients. Currently, Jessica works primarily on location for weddings, special events and creative projects. At corporate events she performs image consulting with a team for hair, makeup, uniforms and styling. You can also book one-on-one consultations, or a creatively cool photo shoot. When Jessica Waite isn’t doing makeup she can be found cooking, traveling, decorating and going on photo shoots with her daughter. Jessica is amazing and I highly recommend her! She is truly beautiful from the inside out with a special gift of inspiration and beauty to share. To see more of Jessica’s amazing work check out her website at makeupmaui.com

THE PROJECT

REUSING GLASS BOTTLES & JARS Project Ideas by Larissa Treese

-----------------------

82

REUSE You can always find things around your house to re-purpose and give a new meaning to. I’m a fan of reusing glass bottles, which you can change into drinking glasses, vases, candle holders, or containers for any kind of product or item. In this case, I had an old spice rack that I wanted to change into a spa-like holder for some of my bathroom products that can be displayed. The easiest way I’ve found to remove labels off glass is to soak them in hot water with dish soap for a few hours. While still wet, peel off the thicker top layer of the label and then scrub off the sticky under layer until it is removed. Dry completely and add whatever product you use most frequently. You can also add labels or write on the bottles. I used the same markers that I use for writing on wine glasses during a party. Flowers always add a natural and colorful accent to your room!

Profile of A Maui Stylist Story by Lani Morris Photos by Moriah Diamond PromotingYouNow.com

One of the most frequently asked questions between women is “who does your hair?” Finding an amazing hair dresser is like finding true love! You never want to break up! You will follow them through locations, life transitions, bear their 3 week vacations...... Or God forbid, a trip to Europe for 6 to 8 weeks. You are committed. Loyal. You re-book and refer her like she is a rarity, a precious gem with a special beauty power. A true talent with a knack for their own unique style is hard to find in a hairdresser. I found EXACTLY that when I was referred to Karli Rose. My best friend had an art opening at Rutz Salon where Karli is a stylist. She suggested I see Karli, and when I caught a glimpse of her from across the room, I knew I had to book an appointment. She is a unique and stunning beauty; stylish and chic, embodying all that it is to be a goddess. While in Karli’s chair I have had the great pleasure of getting to know her interesting life story. Karli is a performer at heart and grew up acting, dancing and singing, so she pursued her education in vocal performance and musical composition. While in school, she worked in restaurants and also went to massage therapy school. She worked in and managed restaurants in L.A. and eventually on Maui until she felt a little burned out. It was then she knew that she wanted a different life path, and had a vivid dream about going to beauty school. Following her intuition, she got her education as a cosmetologist and has never looked back! For Karli, being creative in lots of multi-faceted ways is what gives her inspiration. She loves working with hair and beauty because every day offers something different. From color to cuts, to makeup applications, it allows her complete creative freedom to express herself and her individual style. What I love the most about Karli is the fact that she is an advocate for natural beauty. She has amazing experience and education on natural health and beauty. From childhood, Karli has always had allergies and sensitivities and to this day has to be very careful of what she chooses to eat and put on her body. Through her own health history and a desire to give her clients nothing but the best, she uses only the highest quality products. Her ----------------------

fabulous line up of products include: Organic color systems and Schwarzkopf Essensity colour. These have amazing “Free Of” lists that include: ammonia, formaldehyde, sodium laurel sulfate, parabens and gluten. These are lists of ingredients that we should all be educated on. She also utilizes Glo professional, also known as Glo minerals, and carries a full range of this amazing clean and natural mineral makeup line. Glo minerals gives you a fresh, simple or dramatic look. There are a beautiful array of colors to choose from that look amazing and natural on, and give you that camera-ready look. So whether you are booking a cut and color or a makeup consultation, you can feel confident that you will be completely cared for. Karli feels a strong personal responsibility to use natural, high quality products and does not use anything on her clients that she would not use on herself. Karli Rose inspires her clients daily by encouraging women to get away from the belief that living on Maui means you never need to doll yourself up. A common attitude is, “Why bother?” or, “It’s too much trouble to put makeup on.” Or, “I’ll just book Karli for my once a year haircut.” Maui is a very natural place for sure, but Karli feels that you can still look cute, feel good, and dress sassy, even on Maui. With Karli’s magic, and being in the presence of her own impeccable, unique style, you can’t help but to be inspired to want to put more effort into creating your own look. Karli Rose has a passion for helping women overcome insecurities around beauty, for we all struggle with the same battles. Through her art form as a stylist and using amazing products, she is able to help clients feel amazing about themselves. This is a form of adornment she encourages, which is a way for women to nurture themselves and their beauty. When I asked Karli to describe her inspiration for her own personal unique style, she described it as a vintage retro feel. Also, a hippie chic, boho style. She wears exactly what she loves and has a fetish for online shoe shopping, and can be seen wearing the most beautiful boots every day of the week!! She loves clothes, shoes and fashion. She says, “You can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the girl.” Karli Rose is also an amazing crafter, artist and jewelry designer. She laughs and says she calls it “Creative A.D.D.,” as she is constantly designing. She has a line of amazing Eco sheik bags made from all recyclable, renewable materials, jewelry, and a new hand-carved and painted leather line. Karli claims that she will always do hair, even years down the line, and be the creative, amazing jack-of-all-trades that she is!

I am so fortunate to see Karli every six weeks! I love her! I highly recommend a consultation with Karli Rose. She is a stylist extraordinaire at Rutz salon in Kihei. You can also check out her and her amazing offerings on her website at karlirose.com. -----------------------

Conception of By Eden Zang

When you first meet Lani Morris, you are immediately engulfed by her gentle, generous, warmth. Her compassionate gaze and reassuring voice make you feel you’re in the presence of an old friend. Lani is an esthetician. For those unfamiliar with the term, estheticians simply specialize in beauty, typically offering a variety of skin treatments. Lani started practicing as an esthetician in 2004 working in day spas, luxury resorts, and finally her own successful holistic esthetician practice. Lani features services such as waxing (for men and women), facials, and natural anti-aging therapy. In addition, she is an instructor at Spa Luna, a holistic esthetician school on the island of Maui.

As a professional specializing in beauty, the logical first question to ask would be: How does she define beauty? Lani said: “Beauty to me is a feeling. As an esthetician I work on the outermost layer of our bodies; our skin, and because of that, it becomes more beautiful! But beauty comes from the inside out. A person may have striking physical beauty, but that doesn’t matter. If you are beautiful from your inner being it radiates out!” The journey of beauty begins by looking at her clients as a whole. Guiding them through insight, education, observation, and careful treatment, Lani is able to treat imbalances at the core, not just symptoms. She constantly researches new products, techniques and trends in the skin care industry. She uses products that are 100% natural, organic and wild-crafted on her clients. When you go to her for a treatment you are not just receiving a service and then sent away. She empowers her clients and students with the tools necessary to feel genuinely beautiful. And how do we feel genuinely beautiful? Her reply, “ALWAYS LOVE YOURSELF! Find balance in your life.” Morris admits the journey of loving herself has been a challenge. But working on her own growth is an inspiration for her. Her work to help others to realize their beauty and love themselves serves as a daily reminder for her to do the same. I received my first treatment from Lani over a year ago. Just like when you meet Lani for the first time, the first time you walk into her treatment space you are met with a sense of ease. Scents of eucalyptus, peppermint and other essential oils fill the air. A chilled glass of cucumber water and a yummy healthy treat typically await my arrival. Whatever I may be facing outside her doors, I simply slip away while I am in that special space she has created. I feel safe, which is important when dealing with hot wax. At CRE8, we highlight those who embody passion in hopes that it inspires others to create. Passion emanates from Lani’s life. Let’s follow her lead and create the truly beautiful life we crave.

by nature maui Lani is a Holistic Esthetician that has worked at Maui’s top resorts and spas including : The Four Seasons Lanai and Wailea, The Kapalua Spa, and The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. She is now working at her own practice, Beauty By Nature Maui, where she offers a variety of different modalities. Lani is also an instructor at Spa Luna Holistic School for Estheticians, teaching advanced esthetic workshops. a little Aloha in San Diego, California

Photos & Story by Becky Potts

-----------------------

When Margeaux Weith, owner and operator of the Beauty Carriage, tired of the same old salon atmosphere she decided to make a change for her clients and herself. She looked to Hawaii for her inspiration. Margeaux wanted to bring the soothing sounds of the surf, the relaxing smell of the ocean breezes and the healing energy of the water to her salon. She couldn’t bring the ocean to the salon, so she decided to take the salon to the ocean or bay, thus creating the Beauty Carriage. Margeaux converted a 27-foot Thor Shadow Sport Motor Home into a fully operational beauty salon. She has found a nice spot on Fiesta Island in San Diego where she can park. It offers lots of parking and her outside seating area is comfortable with an indoor/ outdoor carpet, an awning for shade, table and chairs; all facing the bay so you can sit and enjoy the views of Sea World and Pacific Beach while you wait for your appointment or for t h e c o l o r t o s i t i n yo u r h a i r. The converted motor home is equipped with a small sitting area, full shampoo basin, styling chair, salon size hair dr yer, bathroom and a refrigerator where she keeps cool beverages if you so desire. The styling chair where Margeaux performs her magic is in the back of the motor home, where you sit facing an oval shaped antique mirror and a window overlooking the beach. As she cuts your hair you can watch the jet skiers fly by, canoes and boaters, horseback riders galloping along the surf, dogs playing in the bay and even rowing teams gliding by in their skiffs. ----------------------

95

It’s a wonderful, relaxing hour and I’m always sad when my hair is done and it’s time to leave. I find myself looking forward to my next hair appointment so I can take the time to enjoy a little Aloha. Bring your dog, bring your bike, or bring your canoe, there is nothing better than enjoying the rest of your day at the Bay after your appointment. Margeaux doesn’t stop there; she has also created her own shampoo, conditioner and body lotion line. Being very eco-conscious, she makes her products from environmentally friendly organic oils, with no preservatives. Once again turning to her Hawaiian inspiration she makes them with kukui nut oil, macadamia nut oil and coconut oils. They smell wonderful and make your hair so healthy and alive. The shampoo is labeled “Squeaky (Yeah, it gets it that clean)” or how about the body lotion, “Butta (It’s like butta baby)”. I’m not sure what Margeaux is planning for the future, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find her living in Hawaii one of these days. Until then I will continue to enjoy the Beauty Carriage and thank her so much for the little bit of Aloha that she gives me in each appointment.
