The West African country of Mali was struggling with drought, hunger and a nutrition crisis when a coup ousted the president making way for rebel forces to take control of the vast desert North, including the famed Timbuktu. The conflict caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes and threatened the health, education and protection of women and children.
