O regime republicano promoveu algumas medidas reformadoras sobretudo ao nível do ensino. Foi, contudo, no período do Estado Novo que a Universidade promoveu a grande alteração urbanística ganhando a designação de Alta Universitária. Com o final do século, marcado pela massificação do ensino universitário, a Alta sofre um processo de desconcentração, iniciado com a transferência do Hospital.

However, it was during the period of the New State that the University promoted a major urban planning operation in the upper part of town, which became the “University Alta”. Towards the end of the century, and with the massification of higher education, the Alta goes through a process of decentralization that began with the transfer of the Hospital.
