A Universidade de Coimbra — Alta e Sofia, enquanto Bem candidato a integrar a Lista dos Bens Património Mundial da UNESCO, compreende duas vertentes, uma material e outra imaterial, que expressam a importância de uma instituição, cuja influência e simbolismo ultrapassam as fronteiras locais, regionais e nacionais para adquirir uma verdadeira dimensão universal.
As a property nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the University of Coimbra — Alta and Sofia consists of two main aspects, one material and the other non-material, both of which reflect the importance of an institution whose influence and symbolic significance have extended beyond local, regional and national borders to acquire truly universal dimensions.
A configuração do bem Universidade de Coimbra — Alta e Sofia teve por base a própria história da instituição universitária, em estreita conjugação com a realidade actual do território, em função das suas fases de instalação, expansão, consolidação, retracção, reestruturação e reorganização, fases essas com correspondência directa nos domínios ideológicos, pedagógicos, culturais e físicos.
The property known as the University of Coimbra — Alta and Sofia emerged from the history of the university institution itself in close association with the present-day territory, through the various phases of its foundation, expansion, consolidation, retrenchment, restructuring and reorganisation, all of which have a direct relation to the ideological, pedagogical, cultural and physical spheres.
A vertente material do património imóvel construído abrange um conjunto de edifícios que estão ou já estiveram ligados à produção e transmissão do conhecimento, estabelecidos em duas áreas distintas da cidade, a Alta e a Sofia. Estas duas unidades morfológicas complementavam-se e encontravam-se no passado. Todavia, motivos conjunturais conduziram à separação destas áreas, perdendo uma a função original e acabando a outra por ser redesenhada segundo diferentes necessidades e ideais. No entanto, têm em comum, para além da relação histórica e cultural excepcional, o papel de motor na organização do espaço urbano da cidade de Coimbra.
The material aspect of the immovable heritage includes a group of buildings which are, or have been, associated with the production and transmission of knowledge and are established in two separate areas of the city, the Alta and Sofia zones (in the upper and lower parts of town, respectively). These two morphological units were linked and complemented each other in the past, but various circumstances eventually led to their separation, with one losing its original function and the other being redesigned in accordance with different needs and ideals. Nevertheless, in addition to their exceptional historic and cultural relationship, they both share the role of being the driving force behind the organisation of urban space within the city of Coimbra.
