A organização e o reforço da componente museológica da Universidade de Coimbra, em torno deste Largo, constituirão um dos pontos fortes do percurso turístico da Alta. Com início no Largo D. Dinis, o circuito orienta--se para a Praça Marquês de Pombal, daqui através do Largo da Feira para o Museu Nacional Machado de Castro, transitando para o Pátio das Escolas e daí com regresso ao Largo D. Dinis. No Paço das Escolas a demolição da sala de leitura e a construção do novo auditório da Faculdade de Direito, edifício notável do Arquitecto Fernando Távora, levaram a que o pátio interior, contíguo à Biblioteca Joanina e à Capela de S. Miguel, perdesse a sua identidade e função, apresentando-se com uma imagem degradada, de traseiras, não compatível com a qualidade geral dos edifícios que o enquadram. Local fundamental no percurso turístico dentro do Paço, urge reorganizar este espaço, refuncionalizando-o através da instalação de um pólo do Museu da Universidade e da instalação de uma pequena loja, um bar e instalações sanitárias, de apoio à visita turística. Esta operação prevê o aproveitamento das ruínas descobertas pelas escavações arqueológicas (não concluídas), sob o pátio, e o estabelecimento de ligação aos pisos superiores das instalações anexas à Capela (salas destinadas originariamente ao ensino da música) para a instalação do Museu, num total de cerca de 350 m2. Esta intervenção, crucial para a recuperação de uma área significativa do Paço das Escolas, servirá de referência na reorganização do percurso turístico e inclui, ainda, nas suas proximidades, a adaptação de salas de apoio a posto de turismo e loja. Garantese, deste modo, uma visibilidade até hoje inexistente e a criação de um pólo multifacetado de serviços de apoio ao visitante. A capacidade de gestão do estacionamento automóvel dentro da área de candidatura será determinante para a qualificação do espaço público de toda a Alta Universitária. Neste sentido entende-se como decisiva a construção de um siloauto subterrâneo sob o Largo D. Dinis pois esta transformação viabiliza a eliminação da quase totalidade do estacionamento à superfície, que actualmente se localiza maioritariamente nos largos propostos para requalificação. A localização deste silo permite, para além da facilidade de acesso através da Calçada Martim de Freitas, que a chegada à Alta por veículo motorizado se faça precisamente pelo ponto preferencial para o início do percurso turístico. Este percurso partirá do Largo D. Dinis, onde, conforme anteriormente referido, se instala o Centro de Interpretação e Divulgação da Universidade de Coimbra (bilhética,

Museum, from there to the University Palace and Courtyard, and will end at Largo D. Dinis. In the ensemble of the University Palace (Paço das Escolas), the demolition of the Law School’s reading room and the construction of a new auditorium, a remarkable building by the architect Fernando Távora, have caused the inner courtyard contiguous to the Joanine Library and St. Michael’s Chapel to lose its identity and role, now presenting an undignified image which is incompatible with the overall quality of the surrounding buildings. Given the crucial importance of this spot to the tourist route within the Palace, there is a pressing need to reorganize this space, making it once again functional, through the establishment of a unit of the University Museum, as well as tourist support structures, such as a small shop, a cafeteria and toilet facilities. This operation will use the ruins discovered by archaeological excavations (still unfinished) under the courtyard, and create a pathway to the upper floors of the annexes to the Chapel (originally used for music teaching), where the Museum will be housed, occupying a total area of 350m2. This intervention, which is crucial for restoring a significant area of the University Palace, will provide a point of reference for reorganising tourist routes, besides including the remodelling of surrounding rooms to house a tourist office and a shop. In this way, this area will acquire an unprecedented visibility, as well as a versatile range of visitor support services. The ability to manage car parking within the nominated area will be decisive for the enhancement of public space throughout the University Alta. It is, therefore, crucial to build an underground multistorey car park underneath Largo D. Dinis, since this transformation will make it possible to eliminate almost entirely surface car parks, most of which are currently located in squares proposed for renovation. The location of this car park will allow people using motor vehicles to easily access the Alta through the Calçada Martim de Freitas, and arrive at the exact spot chosen for the beginning of the tourist route. As previously mentioned, this route will depart from D. Dinis Square, where the Information and Dissemination Centre (with ticket centre, tourist office, shop, etc.) and the new University Museum will be located, occupying the whole building of St. Jerome’s College after major work of rehabilitation. From here, one can opt for continuing the visit either towards the Museologic Nucleus of the College of Jesus and the Chemical Laboratory, or towards the University Palace. Visitor routes may be managed by the Ticket Centre, in order to control visitor numbers and fluxes in different locations.
