Miller Letter

Dear Seahawk Fans, Thank you for being a part of another exciting men’s golf season at UNCW! The University of North Carolina Wilmington is very proud of the student-athletes on this team, who compete athletically the same way they do academically: with tremendous heart, drive and courage. I hope their commitment to excellence will be rewarded with your ongoing support for their team and athletics at UNCW. The Seahawks’ dedication to their sports and their studies is matched only by their determination to succeed as citizens of the world. Led by UNCW’s coaches and athletics staff, our student-athletes contribute to Southeastern North Carolina as volunteers for numerous organizations, mentors for younger students at area schools, and role models of active, healthy lifestyles. Just as our student-athletes do everything they can to support this community they love so much, they require your support to continue on their journey of learning and within their athletic endeavors. I encourage you to show the Seahawks that you’re behind them by attending home games, supporting scholarships for student-athletes, joining the Seahawk Club and sharing your UNCW pride on social media. Best wishes to the men’s golf team and Coach 0DWW &ODUN IRU D WHUUL¿F \HDU Go Seahawks!

Head Coach Matt Clark Sixth season • Alabama, 1997 • Prattville, Ala. UNCW continued its title run in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013 with its third straight conference banner and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth consecutive season. The Seahawks posted a 24-shot win over runnerup James Madison as four players finished in the top-7. Payne McLeod became the program’s fifth CAA Champion joining, Josh Brock (2011), Brian Joyce (2006), Travis Bland (1998) and Chris Buffaloe (1993). Joining McLeod on the CAA’s first-team was Thomas Bass, while Stefan Brewer and Josh Woodfox were second-team honorees. The Seahawks reached the 2012 NCAA Tournament after winning the automatic berth with a CAA Tournament championship, UNCW’s second in as many seasons. In 2010-11, UNCW posted perhaps its best season in recent history with four tournament wins, tying the record set by the 2003 edition of the Seahawks. UNCW opened the fall season with an impressive win at the Maryland Intercollegiate and followed that with three wins in the spring season, including the Seahawk Invitational, Pinehurst Intercollegiate and CAA Championship. Also continuing his rise in the collegiate ranks under the direction of Clark was Josh Brock. Brock won three tournaments and fashioned six top-10 finishes. He became UNCW’s first medalist at the CAA Championship since Brian Joyce in 2005.

Clark worked six years in Tuscaloosa and assisted with every phase of the Crimson Tide’s program, including recruiting, travel, instruction and fund raising. He served as tournament director of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and the Joe Namath Celebrity Golf Classic. The energetic Clark accepted his first head coaching post at Georgia State in 2003-04 and enjoyed instant success. The Panthers finished seventh at the NCAA East Regional and 11th at the NCAA Championship, claiming a final ranking of 14th in the Golfstat poll. In 2004-05, Clark was named Atlantic Sun Conference Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Panthers to a fourth place finish in the NCAA East Regional and a tie for 13th at the NCAA Championship. Clark’s impressive run at GSU continued in 2005-06 as the Panthers made their debut in the CAA. He was selected CAA Coach-of-the-Year after State captured their first CAA golf title and advanced to the NCAA East Regionals.

In his final season at GSU, the Panthers won their second CAA crown in three seasons behind Clark and Sjoholm. The Panthers finished 18th in the NCAA East Regionals in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Sjoholm, two-time Player-of-the-Year in the CAA, qualified for the NCAA finals with a fourth place finish individually. “The Wilmington area is a beautiful place. When you think of the surroundings, you think of golf. I accept the challenge of also making it known for a great collegiate golf team that the university and community will be proud to call its own,” said Clark. Clark, an avid golfer with seven hole-in-ones to his credit, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Alabama in 1997. He married Raleigh native Erica Wein in the fall of 2008 and the couple has a ninth-month old daughter, Ansley Grace.

The Panthers advanced to the NCAA East Regionals again in 2006-07 behind Third-Team All-American Joel Sjoholm. GSU wound up ninth in the regionals and 17th overall at the NCAA Championship.

In 2009-10, Clark made his mark on the program by guiding the Seahawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance following a four-year absence from the tournament. In his second year, UNCW posted a pair of tournament wins, taking medalist honors at the VCU Shootout and the River Landing Intercollegiate. In 2008-09, UNCW fashioned eight top-10 finishes, including medalist honors for Brock and Derek Wallace in the Cavalier Classic and Kauai Collegiate, respectively. A native of Prattville, Ala., Clark began his collegiate playing career at South Florida before finishing up at Alabama. He played two and a half seasons for the Crimson Tide and former coach Dick Spybey before joining the school’s coaching staff.

birdies for kaitlyn The UNCW Men’s Golf Team needs your support We are conducting a fundraiser to help UNCW golf alum and UNCW Hall of Famer Derek Brown make needed renovations to his house so that his twoyear old daughter, Kaitlyn, who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, can have a room that will provide her the safety and medical necessities to give her a more functional and better life. Please make a pledge to sponsor UNCW Men’s Golf in “Birdies for Kaitlyn.” Here is the story of the Brown Family and their beautiful twin daughters! On September 21, 2011, the Brown family was blessed with twin girls who were born nearly 15 weeks early. When they were born, Kaitlyn weighed one-pound, 11.5 ounces and Kinley weighed 1-pound, 0.3 ounces. While Kinley’s three-month stay in the NICU was smooth and uneventful, Kaitlyn was not as fortunate during her seven-month stay. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and has a trach and ventilator to help her breathe while getting nutrition thru a gtube. Unfortunately, the Brown’s home was not built with a special needs child in mind. All of the bedrooms and full bathrooms are upstairs. This causes a safety concern since it is difficult to transport Kaitlyn up-and-down the stairs with all of the necessary equipment. An $80,000 home renovation needs to be done to the first floor. Derek and Amanda hope to build a bedroom and bathroom to minimize using the stairs so often. Examples of projects needed to make the rooms more accessible for Kaitlyn include reinforcing walls for grab bars, installing a lift for her as she gets older and a therapeutic bath tub. The Seahawk men’s golf program is asking for your help with “Birdies for Kaitlyn.” Our goal is to raise $80,000 so the Brown Family can better meet Kaitlyn’s needs and help her reach as many milestones as possible. One hundred percent of your donation will go toward helping the Browns with housing renovations as well as medical necessities.

Jimmy Bass Athletic Director The UNCW athletic department continues to make tremendous strides under the leadership of Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass. Since taking over the helm of the program in October of 2010, the Seahawks have won more Colonial Athletic Association championships than any other conference member over the last three years. Overall, UNCW has captured 11 CAA titles, including three crowns in 2012-13. Bass introduced a comprehensive strategic plan upon his arrival and the Seahawks embraced it with great success, excelling in the athletic arena and also in the classroom. With a recognized expertise in marketing and fund raising, the North Carolina native restructured the department’s fund raising arm and orchestrated a $2 million renovation to venerable Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks also reached a sponsorship consulting partnership with IMG Worldwide. Before accepting the UNCW post, Bass spent three years in external operations at East Carolina after holding similar positions at Mississippi State, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, UNCW and Davidson.
