CAA Men’s Track & Field Champions: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009

Jim Sprecher [Jumps/Sprints] Jim Sprecher, the most successful cross country/track and field coach in UNC Wilmington history, has established the UNCW program as one of the CAA’s best as he enters his 18th season in 2013-14. Sprecher, 51, guided the Seahawks to three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association men’s track and field championships from 1997-99 before accepting the top post at his alma mater, Ball State. He returned to UNCW in 2004 and has picked up where he left off, leading the Seahawks to titles once again in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The Seahawks had another successful season in 2013 as four athletes qualified for the NCAA First Round meet in Greensboro, N.C. Among those qualifying were Aerial Chatman and David Lindsay, both whom were making their third NCAA regional appearances. Joining Chatman and Lindsey were Meena Reid and Cam Walton, who were making their second and first appearances, respectively. UNCW finished second and third in the men’s and women’s CAA Championships at Towson. Reid won the women’s 100 meter while Chatman and Walton won the Triple Jump and Long Jumps, respectively. The Seahawks capped a successful 2012 outdoor season by sending Bob Vanderham (800), David Lindsay (110 Hurdles), Aerial Chatman (Long Jump/ Triple Jump) and Jordan Daywalt (Pole Vault) to the NCAA 1st round meet in Jacksonville, Fla. Vanderham and Lindsay were CAA champions in the 800 meters and 110 Hurdles, respectively. UNCW also saw its men’s 4x800 Relay win the College Race of the Penn Relay and won the Florida Relays early in the season. The Seahawks also posted wins in the UNCW Seahawk Invitational and teamed with regional rival East Carolina to win the Beaches Vs. Mountains meet. Justin Prevette (Long Jump) and Annie Powell (Pole Vault) led a contingent of six Seahawks into the 2011 NCAA Regional. Joining them were Chatman (Triple Jump), Vanderham (800), Wil Zahorodny (800) and Lindsay (110 Hurdles). Vanderham won the first of two CAA 800 meter titles and the UNCW men finished second at the CAA Championships. The Seahawks totaled five CAA champions in 2010 behind a pair of wins by Devon Watlington, who won both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles. Joining Watlington in the winner’s circle were Jeremy Johnson, Prevette, Jordan Reed and Kadeem Harmon on the 4x100 Relay, Alan Wiggins (Pole Vault) and Kathleen Casto in the 10,000 meters. Representing UNCW in the NCAA Regional were Wiggins (Pole Vault), Prevette (200 meters), Watlington (110/400 Hurdles) and Cast (10,000) In 2009, UNCW continued its winning ways, winning the CAA men’s title for a 10th time. On the women’s side, senior Jaraea Shepherd was named Co-Most Outstanding Performer after winning both the Discus and Hammer Throws and leading the Seahawks to a second-place finish, their highest finish ever in the championship. Led by school-record holding sprinter John Carr, a contingent of six athletes competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Greensboro, N.C. That brought the total number of NCAA regional participants to 89 during the guidance of Sprecher. The Seahawks captured their ninth overall men’s championship in 2008 in dramatic fashion, taking the 4x400 Relay and rallying for the win. Ten Seahawks won CAA championships, 18 were named All-East and nine qualified for the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. 2007-08 was a special year for the program in addition to winning the CAA Championship. A pair of alums were honored when Michael McDuffie was inducted into the UNCW Hall-of-Fame and Anna Raynor competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials. UNCW won its first of two straight CAA titles in 2007. CAA Men’s Track & Field Champions: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009

Jeni Bozarth [Throws] Jeni Bozarth enters her sixth season as an assistant coach at UNCW and is responsible for coaching the throwing events for the Seahawks.

Bozarth came to UNCW after spending the 2007-08 season as a volunteer assistant with the storied Nebraska track and cield program. During that time, she continued to train for the 2008 Olympic Trials, where she placed 20th.

Bozarth has done a superb job with UNCW’s throwers and the 2013 season was no exception. The group achieved 10 scoring positions at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, including six All-CAA performances and two individual event champions.

Bozarth, who earned All-Big 12 honors six times, was a four-year letterwinner for the Huskers. In 2007, she was named Nebraska’s Most Improved Female Field Athlete after breaking the 53-foot mark and advancing to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., placing 11th in the shot put. Bozarth later finished 16th overall at the U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis. A fouryear member of the Big 12 All-Academic team, she capped her collegiate career with USTFCCCA National All-Academic honors.

Senior Kyle Barbour captured first in the discus and second place in the hammer throw, ending his career ranked second in the weight throw, third in the discus and second in the hammer. Junior Austin Dow finished second in the javelin to earn All-CAA accolades with a lifetime best throw that moved him up to fifth all-time at UNCW. Sophomore Clarissa Perkins shook off a back injury to shatter her own record in the outdoor shot put and sits in second and seventh on the discus and hammer lists. She earned a gold in the discus and bronze in the shot put at the CAA meet.

Bozarth is USATF Level I Certified Coach and a member of the United States Throws Coaches Association. She is married to Aaron Bozarth, assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Seahawks, and the couple welcomed a son, Robbie, to the world last April.

The household also includes two mastiffs, Magma and Olga.

Also, junior DN Cherry collected All-CAA honors for the first time with a third-place finish in the hammer throw, good enough for third all-time in the program. Melissa Stallings (javelin), Kyle Campbell (javelin), Eric Griffin (discus) and Ryan Kelly (shot put) added points at the CAA competition. The 2012 season was highlighted by school records, freshman records, all conference performances and 15 additions to the All-Time Top-10 list in nine events. Juniors Thomas DiCiaccio and Kyle Barbour walked away from the CAA Championships with silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the hammer throw. Both athletes set personal bests on the season, which landed Barbour fifth and DiCiaccio sixth all-time at UNCW. The women’s team was led by newcomer Clarissa Perkins, who finished the season with three freshman records (weight throw, shot put, discus), four top-10 performances, along with the school record in the shot put. Her efforts placed her fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot put at CAA’s. Overall, the Seahawk throwers combined for 11 scoring positions at the conference meet. Comprised mainly of freshmen and sophomores, the 2011 track and field season wrapped up well for the Seahawk throwers. Eleven marks were added or improved on the all-time Top-10 list by eight athletes. Senior John Dillashaw had the most breakthrough performances at the CAA Championship by recording personal bests in both the javelin and shot put, finishing fourth and seventh in the events. Led by Dillashaw, the Seahawks combined for nine scoring positions at the meet. The 2010 season was a year of growth for a group of very young Seahawk throwers. Five athletes improved or secured positions on the school’s top-10 list, topped by freshman Kyle Barbour, who finished the season ranked third all-time in the discus. The throwers also fared well at the CAA Championships, with eight scoring positions between the men and women. In 2009, the Seahawk throwers combined for nine scoring positions at the CAA meet. Senior Jaraea Shepherd, who finished with the gold in the hammer and discus competitions, was the headliner. Her championships earned Shepherd the Most Valuable Field Event Performer Award and qualified her for the NCAA Regionals. Two other throwers, Mick Glassmacher and Lori Harrison, closed with All-CAA honors and also qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Layne Schwier [Distance] Layne Schwier enters his 11th year as an assistant coach with the Seahawks and is responsible for coaching the men’s and women’s distance programs during both the cross country and the track seasons. His squads continue making strides in the CAA in cross country and expect to make a contribution once again this spring on the track as both teams make another run at a CAA Championship. Distance runners under Schwier currently hold 104 spots on UNCW’s Top 10 alltime lists (43%). They have established 10 individual school records and four relay records. In addition to improved running performance, the squads have excelled in the classroom with both the women’s and men’s cross country teams being named All-Academic teams by the USTFCCCA in 2011. For the women, that marks the ninth straight year they have earned that distinction under Schwier. Individually, Schwier’s athletes have been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team 11 times. The 2011-2012 seasons saw a lot of continued success in the distance events for the Seahawks. In the fall, senior Wil Zahorodny was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. On the track, Zahorodny also once again lowered his indoor 1000m school record. Senior Bob Vanderham defended his CAA Championship in the 800m and ran in the First Round of the NCAA Championships. Ryan O’Connor set a freshman record (1:50.44) in the 800m and finished third at the CAA Championships to claim his first All-CAA award. Zahorodny, Vanderham, and O’Connor teamed up with Connor Brooks to bring home the College Championship in the 4x800m Relay at the Penn Relays. It was also a record setting year for the women. Senior Becky Boulay set the indoor 1000m record, the outdoor 800m record, and was a member of the record setting indoor 4x800m relay team. She also finished third at the CAA Championships to earn All-CAA for the first time. Also making All-CAA by finishing second in the 3k Steeplechase, as well as setting the school record, was senior Erin Brennan. 2010-2011 was a strong year for the Seahawk distance program. In the fall, Lindsay Ester finished sixth at the CAA Cross Country Championships to earn All-CAA honors. During theIindoor track season, Wil Zahorodny continued his assault on the record books as he set new standards in the 600m, 800m, and 1000m. The outdoor season also saw many records fall including a battle back and forth in the women’s steeplechase with Erin Brennan and Lily Patterson each breaking the school record Patterson had set in 2010. Ultimately, Patterson ended up with the record again and would finish 3rd at the CAA Championships, earning All-CAA. On the men’s side, Zahorodny not only broke his own 800m record from the previous year, but also took down a 15 year old 1500m record. The men’s 4x800m relay would finish second at both the Florida Relays and the Penn Relays where they established a new school record of 7:26.15. At the CAA Championships, the Seahawks finished 1-2-6 in the 800m, with Bob Vanderham edging out Zahorodny for the win, taking his school record in the process. Vanderham and Zahorodny were each named All-CAA and also qualified for the NCAA Regional in the 800m where Vanderham would advance to the quarterfinals. The 2010 season saw a lot of success out of the distance program. Senior Kathleen Casto established herself as one of the best in school history when she established school records in both the 10k and the 1500m on the track. She was the CAA Champion in the 10k, establishing a CAA meet record in the process. In addition, Casto qualified for the First Round of the NCAA Championships in the 10k. Lily Patterson established a new school record in the 3k Steeplechase and was a member of the school record setting 4x1500m relay team. Wil Zahorodny continued to make his mark on the program and in the CAA by establishing three school records and earning All-CAA. During the indoor season, he broke both

the 600m and 800m school records. He later broke the outdoor 800m school record and would earn All-CAA by finishing third at the CAA Championships in the 800m. During the 2009 season, the Seahawks saw two school records broken at the Penn Relays when Kathleen Casto set the 10k record and the women’s 4x800m relay also was rewritten. Additionally, Casto would move up to second all-time at UNCW in the 5,000m when she finished fifth at the CAA Championships. The 10,000m race at the CAA Championship saw three Seahawks score points, led by Junior Bernadette O’Neill in fourth-place, along with Sophomores Lauren Wells and Lauren Mohr in seventh and eighth respectively. All four of these ladies qualified for and ran in the ECAC Championships. On the men’s side, Wil Zahorodny finished fifth in the 800m at the CAA Championships and the men’s 4x800m relay team qualified for the IC4A Outdoor Championships where they would run 7:35 and just miss making the finals. In his first five years with the Seahawks, Coach Schwier was also responsible for the Seahawk throws program. Under his guidance, the Seahawks achieved 27 All-CAA performances (12 individual titles), 25 IC4A/ECAC qualifiers (seven AllEast performances and four Champions), 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, and broke 5 school records. They also qualified an athlete to the NCAA Championships four out of those five years, including the very first for the UNCW women’s track & field program when Christie Schreckengost qualified in the javelin in 2004. A highlight in Schwier’s coaching career was his role in the emergence of Anna Raynor in the javelin. Despite having no experience in the event before college, Raynor ended her career with the Seahawks as a three-time All-American (11th at NCAA’s in 2005, fourth in 2006 and 2007), three-time CAA Champion and ECAC Champion, two-time Penn Relays Champion, as well as the CAA and UNCW record holder in the javelin. In addition to being named the CAA Track & Field Athlete-of-the-Year for the third consecutive year in 2007, Raynor was also named the Southeast Region Field Athlete-of-the-Year. In the summer of 2007, Raynor finished third at the USA National Championships. As a member of Team USA that summer, she took the silver medal at the NACAC Senior Games in El Salvador. Prior to arriving in Wilmington, Schwier spent two seasons with the Ball State women’s track & field program. During his stint with the Cardinals, Schwier coached NCAA qualifier Janee Langhorne to a Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship where she also set a Mid-American Conference record in the Weight Throw. BSU also became the first MAC school to qualify a women’s team to the NCAA Cross Country National Championship while Schwier was on the staff. Before Ball State, Schwier spent two years as assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. He began his career at Chillicothe (Ohio) High School, where he was head coach of the cross country and track & field teams while teaching science. Schwier graduated from Wittenberg in Springfield, Ohio, where he ran cross country and track for four years. While at Wittenberg, he was coached by 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Schul. He later received his Masters in Sport Biomechanics from Ball State University. Schwier is a member of the USTFCCCA and USA Track & Field. He holds USATF Level II Certification in Throws, Jumps, Combined Events, and Endurance. He is also a USATF Certified Level I Instructor.

Jimmy Bass Athletic Director The UNCW athletic department continues to make tremendous strides under the leadership of Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass. Since taking over the helm of the program in October of 2010, the Seahawks have won more Colonial Athletic Association championships than any other conference member over the last three years. Overall, UNCW has captured 11 CAA titles, including three crowns in 2012-13. Bass introduced a comprehensive strategic plan upon his arrival and the Seahawks embraced it with great success, excelling in the athletic arena and also in the classroom. With a recognized expertise in marketing and fund raising, the North Carolina native restructured the department’s fund raising arm and orchestrated a $2 million renovation to venerable Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks also reached a sponsorship consulting partnership with IMG Worldwide. Before accepting the UNCW post, Bass spent three years in external operations at East Carolina after holding similar positions at Mississippi State, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, UNCW and Davidson.
