Just as our student-athletes do everything they can to support this community they love so much, they require your support to continue on their journey of learning and within their athletic endeavors. I encourage you to show the Seahawks that you’re behind them by attending home games, supporting scholarships for student-athletes, joining the Seahawk Club and sharing your UNCW pride on social media. Best wishes to the women’s soccer team and Coach 3aul Cairney for a terri¿c year. Go Seahawks!

Head Coach Paul Cairney

18th season/UNCW ’93 The UNCW women’s soccer program continues to rise in national prominence under the leadership of former collegiate standout and veteran coach Paul Cairney. Now in his 18th season as head coach, Cairney has been with the women’s program since its inception in 1994. He served as associate head coach with the team for two years before taking over the reins of the program in 1996. A four-year letterman with the UNCW men’s team, Cairney has amassed 165 career victories and posted a winning record in eight of the last 11 seasons as he has developed the Seahawks into one of the Colonial Atheltic Association’s top clubs, His teams have qualified for five of the last seven CAA Championships and have advanced to the championship game in two of those appearances, including the program’s first conference title in 2009. Cairney’s squad enjoyed another stellar season in 2012, earning Most Improved Team accolades from the NCAA with a 12-7-1 overall record and advancing to the title game of the CAA Championship for the second time in four seasons. Led by First-Team selection Stephanie Rose, who paced the league in goals (14) and points (40), a school-record seven players were honored by the CAA. In addition to its success on the pitch, the team was also recognized for its work in the community when they were selected as co-recipient of the 2013 John H. Randolph Inspiration Award from the CAA for its work with seven-year old Baylee Adkins and the Friends of Jaclyn organization. Six players earned All-CAA honors in 2010 when the Seahawks recorded nine or more victories for the 12th time and posted a winning record in league play for the fifth straight season. The 2009 campaign saw Cairney guide UNCW to its first CAA Tournament championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance as the Seahawks edged Hofstra with a 2-1 overtime victory in the semifinals before knocking off James Madison, 1-0, in the tournament championship. head Coach Paul Cairney second time in four campaigns. Cairney’s squad was well recognized for its success as Megan Novak and Stephanie Rose were Second-Team All-CAA selections and Ashley Myers was a Third-Team All-CAA pick. Rose and fellow newcomer Lindsay Henry were also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team, while Novak garnered additional accolades with an All-Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cairney’s team posted its first winning season in 1997 with an 11-9-1 mark, and then pulled off an upset of No. 1 Old Dominion in the 1998 CAA Tournament en route to a 10-10-1 record. The Seahawks reached the CAA semifinals again in 1999 before bowing out to eventual champion William & Mary. In 2004, UNCW opened the season with nine straight wins, outscoring opponents, 33-9. Senior midfielder Caroline Renkin was named Second-Team All-CAA and Jenny Cauble was selected to the All-Rookie squad. The Seahawks also achieved a milestone for the program when they were ranked in the Top 10 of the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz. Cauble became the program’s first First-Team All-CAA selection in 2005. The 2006 squad enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history when the Seahawks finished with a 13-6-0 ledger and posted a second-place finish in the conference at 8-3-0. Cairney shared CAA Coach-of-the-Year honors after helping the Seahawks close out the year ranked 47th among NCAA Division I schools in RPI. Cairney wasn’t the only Seahawk to be rewarded that season. Cauble and sophomore striker Kelly Renkin each made First-Team All-CAA while junior forward Ashley Church garnered Second-Team honors and freshman goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini collected All-Rookie Team laurels. The 2008 squad matched the program record for CAA victories in a season with an 8-3 ledger and the Seahawks matched their highest finish in the regular-season standings with a tie for second. The team also established a new mark for shutouts in a season with nine. Cairney was named CAA Coach-of-the-Year for the second time in three seasons, becoming one of just five coaches in league history to earn the distinction on more than one occasion. Four Seahawks were also acknowledged for their outstanding play. 2009 CAA Champions Led by the heroics of Most Outstanding Player Erin Pardini, the UNCW women’s soccer team captured its first conference championship at the 2009 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship hosted by Northeastern University in Brookline, Mass. Serving as the No. 3 seed for the four-team event, the Seahawks saw their semifinal match against No. 2 seed Hofstra go to overtime after both teams got on the board in the opening 30 minutes. Midway through the first overtime session, Pardini created separation from the Hofstra defense on the left side and sent a shot from near the endline that beat the Pride keeper and crossed the goal line just inside the rig post for the 2-1 victory. right T overtime triumph sent the Seahawks to their first championThe sh game appearance, where they faced No. 4 seed James Madiship so who dispatched host and top-seed Northeastern, 4-1, in the son, ot other semifinal. W With the championship game scoreless in the 80th minute, Pard once again rose to the occasion, converting a penalty kick dini o opportunity for the game’s only tally. Seahawks keeper Caitlin H Hutner kept the Dukes at bay all afternoon, making five saves to e earn the shutout. For their efforts, Pardini and Hunter were named to the AllTournament Team along with UNCW teammates Brittany Croce and Lindsay Henry. The victory also gave the Seahawks their first NCAA Tournament appearance, garnering the league’s automatic bid into the 64-team field by winning the conference championship. Baylee Adkins The UNCW women’s soccer program added a new teammate prior to the start of the 2012 season, a teammate that although she was unable to provide any goals, assists or saves, certainly played a key role in the success of the team during its campaign. Seven-year-old Baylee Adkins, a native of Jacksonville, N.C., had her life changed dramatically in June of 2012 when she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Around the same time period, the UNCW women’s soccer team expressed interest to the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation in adopting an honorary team member who was battling a pediatric brain tumor for the upcoming season. Shortly thereafter, Baylee was matched with the UNCW women’s soccer team. She was adopted by the team in a formal ceremony and since joining the program, the relationship between Baylee and her “teammates” has truly blossomed. Wearing her team-issued No. 1 jersey, Baylee attended every home game in 2012 and was introduced as part of the starting lineup. She also sat on the bench during the games; providing constant support and encouragement for the Seahawks. Baylee even traveled with her family to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in Williamsburg, Va., to cheer on her teammates as they made a run to the championship game. But as supportive and encouraging as Baylee has been, her “teammates” have provided the same love and optimism during her battle with cancer. They have taken their own road trips, making visits to her house, taking her on fun outings to the movies or Chuckee Cheese and have even gone to visit her bedside when she has been in the hospital. The team has also done numerous webcams with Baylee to cheer her on when circumstances dictated they could not be together and made sure that The “Pray for Baylee” Facebook page is full of videos, photos, and messages for her to see and read. Baylee’s family will tell you that the team has given Baylee something to look forward to and be excited about. But, the relationship and the inspiration goes both ways. Baylee has provided the members of the UNCW women’s soccer program with a sense of perspective and an appreciation of what is really important in life. Baylee inspires her “teammates” as much, if not more, than her “teammates” inspire her. Although they did not seek out recognition for their efforts, the program was nonetheless honored for their impact in Baylee’s life. The non-profift Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) publically commended the team while the Colonial Athletic Association named the squad a co-recipient of the 2013 John H. Randolph Inspiration Award, which recognizes individuals who through strength of character and human spirit serve as an inspiration to all to maximize their potential and ability for success.

Colonial athletic Association With nearly three decades of success athletically and academically, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences. The CAA encompasses many of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Charleston, S.C. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 13 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 13 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 23 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2012-13, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 23 teams in 15 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2013. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes several of the nation’s top media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university education and life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs, visiting faculty programs and a recent partnership with NBC Learn to provide educational videos to over 8,500 public schools across the United States. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when two of its current members- James Madison University and the College of William and Mary were aligned with East Carolina University, George Mason University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new conference. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Old Dominion University joined the CAA in 1991 and was followed by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference in 2005 and the College of Charleston began its first year as a CAA member on July 1, 2013. Elon University will join the conference beginning in 2014-15.

Jimmy Bass Athletic Director The UNCW athletic department continues to make tremendous strides under the leadership of Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass. Since taking over the helm of the program in October of 2010, the Seahawks have won more Colonial Athletic Association championships than any other conference member over the last three years. Overall, UNCW has captured 11 CAA titles, including three crowns in 2012-13. Bass introduced a comprehensive strategic plan upon his arrival and the Seahawks embraced it with great success, excelling in the athletic arena and also in the classroom. With a recognized expertise in marketing and fund raising, the North Carolina native restructured the department’s fund raising arm and orchestrated a $2 million renovation to venerable Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks also reached a sponsorship consulting partnership with IMG Worldwide. Before accepting the UNCW post, Bass spent three years in external operations at East Carolina after holding similar positions at Mississippi State, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, UNCW and Davidson. He served as UINCW’s ¿rst full-time fundraiser in 1986, bolstering athletic scholarship efforts and increasing membership in the Seahawk Club three-fold during his ¿rst stay. A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the National Association of Athletic Development Directors, Bass is beginning his second year as president of the Colonial Athletic Association. He is married to the former Sarah Ruark and the couple has a son, Corey.
