Gilberto Gil – For All Growing up in the Brazilian region of Bahia, Gilberto Gil began playing accordion and emulating the music of baião pioneer Luiz Gonzaga at an early age. Infused with the diverse influences of northeastern Brazil – indigenous instrumentation, West African rhythms and European folk music – baião reflects Gilberto Gil’s longstanding cultural explorations through the lens of music. Recognized for his unique abilities to blend quintessential Brazilian genres, including bossa nova and samba, with elements of rock ’n’ roll and jazz, Gil was one of the founders of the influential Tropicália movement of the 1960s, an avant-garde fusing of the traditional and the experimental. Also known for his resonant guitar work and wide-ranging compositions, as well as his commitment to political awareness and social activism, Gilberto Gil continues to be one of the most eclectic and inspiring voices in world music. A Memorial Hall favorite, he returns to Chapel Hill this season for an evening of international rhythms and grooves. HIGH ENERGY
