Dr. LinDa BraDy - ChanCeLLor Dr. Linda P. Brady became the 10th chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on August 1, 2008. Previously she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Simone Stephens Dr. Brady is a member of the Board of (SGA President) Directors of the Greensboro Partnership, a founding member of Opportunity Greensboro (a collegiate-business partnership), a member of the Greensboro Rotary, and a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She chairs the 2011 Campaign for the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She is a native New Yorker and the first member of her family to attend college. She earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, a master’s degree in political scien ce from Rutgers University, and her doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University. From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Brady was an analyst with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense, a period covering both the Carter and Reagan administrations. She served as defense adviser to the Negotiations on Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria and held the same position during the Negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Brady also supported the negotiation and implementation of prepositioning and logistical support agreements with members of NATO and with countries in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. She received the U.S. Department of State Superior Honor award for her work in support of the theater nuclear forces program. Dr. Brady was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at the United States Military Academy in 1991-92. She has served on the board of the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Brady is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Army. She served as Senior Fellow for Arms Control at the Carter Center of Emory University from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Brady is married to Gustav “Steve” Heyer, a retired Army officer. She has two adult stepsons and three grandchildren: Stephen Heyer and his wife, Suzanne, live in Richmond, VA with their children Alyx, Megan and Andrew Casey, while Michael Heyer lives in Chicago, IL.
Kim reCorD - DireCTor of aThLeTiCs Kim Record is in her sixth year as the Director of Athletics at UNCG in 2014-15. Record was named to the post Sept. 27, 2009 and leads a program that fields men’s and women’s teams in 17 sports, over 250 student-athletes and 70 employees. She was recently honored as one of 28 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year award recipients at the 2014 NACDA Convention in Orlando in the NCAA Divion I-AAA category. Since arriving, Record has reshaped and revamped the athletic department across the board. UNCG has seen improvements on the field and has stimulated interest within the campus and Greensboro communities. During her first five years at UNCG, Record has implemented ‘The Spartan Way’ strategic plan in an effort to ensure the continued success and future improvement of Spartan Athletics. The plan includes five core values and six goals for the department summarized with the motto – ‘We discover and develop champions in life.’ Record has guided UNCG to success on and off the court during her time in Greensboro. In 2011-12 alone, the Spartans posted five regular season titles under her watch, including championship banners in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and a divisional title in men’s basketball. UNCG also had five Southern Conference Player of the Year award winners and five conference Coach of the Year honorees last season. The Spartans have excelled in the classroom, having 92 student-athletes named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12. Additionally, UNCG senior cross country student-athlete Ashley Schnell earned an NCAA winter sport postgraduate scholarship. Schnell and men’s soccer student-athlete Peyton Ford picked up SoCon postgraduate scholarship honors. Women’s basketball student-athlete Amy Clapper also earned the NCAA Women’s Enhancement post-graduate scholarship. Record guided UNCG through the NCAA Division I Certification process in 2011-12, which must be completed at least once every 10 years. The certified designated denotes that an institution operates its athletics program in compliance with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership. Record, who served on the NCAA Championships cabinet in 2012-13, is also the vice-chair of the Greensboro Sports Commission, an active member with the Greensboro Rotary, a member of the Greensboro Sports Council and a member of the Women’s Professional Forum. Record, in conjunction with Chancellor Dr. Linda P. Brady, helped develop school spirit-building campaigns such as Move In, Sunday Funday, Go Blue Preview and Blue & Gold Fridays. Record is responsible for the leadership, administration, organization and finances of UNCG’s athletics program, which underwent a major shift in men’s basketball. The Spartan men’s basketball team began playing its games in the Greensboro Coliseum in 2009-10 and enjoyed success last season under SoCon Coach of the Year Wes Miller winning the North Division title. The Spartans will play in the Greensboro Coliseum for the fourth year in 2012-13, hosting 15 games in one of the premier facilities in the region. Record coordinates fundraising and operation of the Spartan Club with the vice chancellor for university advancement. She oversees efforts to engage alumni, fans and the community with UNCG athletics. The Spartan Club surpassed its annual scholarship fund goal for the 2012 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the scholarship fund. The Spartan Club increased its annual scholarship fund by 20.7% over last year’s mark, increasing their efforts by over $50,000 and surpassing the previous high that was set in 1987. Record also has a lead role in strategic planning and in athletics facilities development. She helped complete the facility upgrades at the UNCG Baseball Stadium and the renovations of the HHP locker room facilities. The 12,000 square foot HHP facility hosts team lounges, shower facilities and general locker room areas for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country and track, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and softball. Record, who served as a consultant with ISP Sports before taking her current position, was the senior associate director of athletics at Florida State University from 1995 to 2008, and held a succession of positions at the University of Virginia from 1984-1995, culminating with an appointment as associate director of athletics for administration. Record emerged from a national search that drew 125 candidates, and is UNCG’s first female athletic director. She is only the second woman to hold an athletic director’s position in the 89-year history of the Southern Conference. In her 13 years at Florida State, she had a broad range of administrative duties, including serving as a member of the Executive Management Team, which determined and implemented policy decisions for a 19-sport, $50 million intercollegiate program. She directly supervised three sports programs – men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer – and monitored Title IX compliance. Other areas included executive-level staffing; day-to-day departmental operations; serving as liaison with the trademark licensing program; and oversight for marketing, media and public relations, and radio and television contracts. In construction, she facilitated FSU’s $6 million state-of-the-art soccer and softball stadium and its $10 million men’s and women’s basketball training center. She oversaw a project that showcased the history of athletics at FSU as part of a $100 million facilities improvement plan. Her initial responsibilities as associate director of athletics at FSU included oversight of men’s and women’s tennis, swimming & diving and softball. Record also held the designation of senior woman administrator. At Virginia, she supervised all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department and specialized in external operations. She implemented marketing and promotional strategies for all 26 sports programs as associate director of athletics for external operations. She was the executive staff member of a capital campaign team created to raise $50 million. She rose through the ranks at Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, starting out as a sports information intern who was progressively promoted in the department to associate director of athletics for administration. As a consultant with ISP, Record provided marketing expertise in the area of athletics sports signage, including video boards, scorer’s tables and other digital signage. She has also coordinated purchase and installation between vendor, institution and ISP. Within the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Record has served on both the executive committee and the Director’s Cup Committee. Within the NCAA, she served on the Women’s Soccer Committee and the Regional Soccer Committee. A native of Charlottesville, she graduated from Virginia and earned an M.S. degree in sports management from Florida State. She has two sons – Kyle, 26 who lives in California and Josh, 21, a junior student-athlete at the College of Charleston.

Student-athletes at UNCG have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the years. Although the athletic department celebrated its 48th season in 2013-14, athletics at UNCG date back to the 1940s in the days before the university became co-ed. Golfer Nancy Porter, who went on to a successful pro career, is regarded as one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, competing in tournaments on the national level in the late 1940s. In 1963, as the university prepared to go co-ed, UNCG began to formally organize athletic teams. Women’s basketball, under head coach Ellen Griffin, women’s tennis, women’s golf and field hockey were started. LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann was on one of the early UNCG women’s golf teams. In 1967, UNCG began men’s athletics and the intercollegiate athletics program received formal recognition from the university. In the fall of 1967, the Spartan was adopted d as the program’s mascot. In 1968, UNCG’s men’s teams joined the Dixie Athletic Conference, known today as the USA South Conference, on the NCAA Division III level. Women’s teams competed as part of the AIAW early on, with UNCG being one of the lead organizers of the organization. Two of the first men’s sports were basketball and bowling. In 1971, with the emergence of the five-player rule in women’s basketball, UNCG finished fourth in the National Collegiate Tournament. Two years later, the women’s golf team won the AIAW national title – UNCG’s first-ever team national crown. Porter coached the squad and future professional golfer Donna Horton White was on the squad. Since then, UNCG has enjoyed a number of successes: • Five national titles in men’s soccer during the 1980s and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis. • An unprecedented five-year move from Division III to Division II to Division I -- went from Division III in 1987, to Division II in 1988-90 and have been Division I since 1991. • A trip to the “Big Dance” – the NCAA men’s basketball tournament – in just its fifth year of Division I status. • Men’s soccer coach Michael Parker and women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee were the first to lead teams to the NCAA tournament in all three divisions. • A baseball squad built from scratch by Mike Gaski that made it to the NCAA tournament in just its fifth season of play. • A men’s soccer program that conquered all comers for two months to become the No. 1 team in the nation in 2004, the beginning of UNCG’s three straight NCAA tournament Round of 16 appearances and four in five years. • Kyle Hines, who became just the sixth player in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career. • Individuals like wrestler Dock Kelly, who overcame birth defects that left him without legs, qualifying for the NCAA Championship. • Students like Siggi Eyjolffson, who earned Academic All-American honors three times. • Men’s basketball games moved off campus to the Greensboro Coliseum, one of the premier facilities in the country. From major league pitcher Brian Moehler to MLS champion Alejandro Moreno to LPGA star Becky Morgan, Spartan alumni have gone on to successful careers in sports. That success isn’t just limited to the playing field, either. The late Doug Hamilton was one of the pioneers within MLS and played on the UNCG national championship teams of the 1980s. Eyjolffson returned to his native Iceland and is one of the top people in his native country’s soccer federation, currently serving as their women’s national team head coach. Spartan athletics has had its success stories over the years … and the best is yet to come.

UNCG Volleyball in the Pros and Overseas UNCG volleyball players have had the opportunity to play overseas during the summer and also after their careers in the blue and gold are finished. 2014 graduate Olivia Humphries is currently competing for the UTE volleyball club in Hungary. She recently discussed her experiences in a question and answer session with www.uncgspartans.com What initially made you interested in playing overseas? The main reason I wanted to play overseas is because when I was going into my final season at UNCG, I knew I wasn’t ready for it to be over. I was not ready to stop playing and being a part of a team. I didn’t feel like I had reached my peak yet. How did you choose Hungary as your destination? They actually chose me. I went on an exposure tour and on that tour I played with other American girls in Italy and in Slovenia. When we were in Maribor, Slovenia playing, the coaches from the team I am playing for now came to watch. They asked me that night if I would like to be on their team and we left for Budapest at 8 a.m. the next morning! What is different about the international game? There are a few rule differences but not many. I would say as far as my experience goes, it is less stressful. When I am playing in Hungary all I have to worry about is volleyball. I don’t have classes, meetings, exams, or projects to think about like I did in college. The coach speaks in Hungarian during practice and occasionally translates for me so for the most part I just go to practice, have fun and play volleyball. It is so nice to be able to focus all my energy on being successful on the court.

HEAD COACH COREY CARLIN FIRST SEASON AT UNCG • BALL STATE, ‘98 • THIRD SEASON AS COLLEGIATE HEAD COACH Corey Carlin was named the fifth head coach in UNCG volleyball history February 12, 2014. Carlin owns 15 total years of collegiate volleyball coaching experience, including two seasons as the head coach at Austin Peay. Carlin spent the previous four years as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater Ball State. Carlin helped the Cardinals return to championship form with one league title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Over the past four seasons, Carlin helped guide the Cardinals to an 87-38 (.696) overall record, including a 45-19 (.703) mark in Mid-American Conference play. Carlin also helped mentor Ball State’s student-athletes to 11 All-MAC First Team awards, four All-MAC Second Team accolades, two Academic All-MAC honors and one MAC All-Freshman selection during his tenure. In his first season on the Ball State bench in 2010, Carlin helped guide the Cardinals to the program's eighth MAC Regular Season Championship and a 24-5 (14-2 MAC) record. BSU's .828 winning percentage was the third-best in program history and ranked 17th in the nation among the 328 NCAA Division I Programs. He helped coach four players to All-MAC accolades in 2010, with Alyssa Rio and Kelsey Brandl earning All-MAC First Team and Brittany McGinnis and Whitney Heeres garnering All-MAC Second Team honors. In 2011, Carlin helped coach the Cardinals back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2002 season, as Ball State earned the program's second-ever at-large bid into the 64-team event. BSU finished the season with a 25-8 (12-4 MAC) record and ranked 36th in the NCAA Women's Volleyball RPI rankings. Ball State also received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Coaches poll for the first time since the 1995 season. Carlin helped coach a school-record four student-athletes to All-MAC First Team accolades during the 2011 season, with Brandl, Jennifer Boyd, Kara Bates and Catie Fredrich all picking up the honor. Boyd would go on to earn Academic All-MAC honors, while Bates was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team marking BSU's first all-tournament selection since the 2005 season. In 2012, Carlin helped Bates pick up her second consecutive All-MAC First Team honor, while senior transfer Lisa Scott also earned a spot on the league’s top squad. In addition, freshman Jenna Spadafora earned recognition on the MAC All-Freshman Team after playing as both a setter and as an emergence outside as injuries decimated the Ball State attacking corp. The 2013 campaign saw the Cardinals post a 24-8 overall record and earn a share of the MAC West Division title with a 12-4 league mark. Ball State had a league-high five student-athletes earn All-MAC honors with Mindy Marx, Hayley Benson and Alex Fuelling garnering first team honors, plus Fredrich and Jacqui Seidel picking up second team accolades. Benson would also pick up Academic All-MAC accolades. Prior to joining the Ball State staff, Carlin spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University where he was involved with all duties of daily operations for the program, including serving as the primary recruiter and overseeing academic progress. In 2009, Carlin helped coach Lauren Snyder and Abby O'Connor to Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, with Snyder also earning OVC All-Newcomer Team accolades. The program also finished the 2009-10 academic year with a 3.37 grade-point average, which was the second-highest average among all EKU athletic teams. Prior to joining the Eastern Kentucky staff for the 2008 season, Carlin spent five years at Austin Peay, including serving as the program's head coach for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. As the Governors' head coach, Carlin helped the program achieve a perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate for the 2005-06 season, while administering all aspects of the program. In his final season as head coach, Carlin helped tutor Dodi Szymsha to OVC All-Newcomer Team accolades. In his first season as the program's head coach, his team established top 10 statistical marks in seven categories in the Austin Peay record books, including top five efforts in total blocks and blocks per game. As Austin Peay's assistant coach for the 2002-04 seasons, Carlin helped Sarah Schranmka become just the eighth First Team All-OVC selection in program history, when she earned the award in 2004. He also helped Amy Walk earn both Second Team All-OVC and All-OVC Honorable Mention accolades in 2003 and 2002, respectively. Carlin's first collegiate coaching break came in 1998, when he was named the first assistant at Tarleton State University. After two seasons with the TexAnns, Carlin was named the top assistant coach at Evansville, where he spent 2000 and 2001. Carlin also served as the director of the MidSouth Volleyball Academy from 2004-2008 after co-founding the club. From 1996-1998, Carlin was the head coach of the Ball State University men's club team, where he helped guide the program to a 22-10 record in his final season, including a second-place finish at the prestigious Michigan State Men's Club Volleyball Spring Tournament. Carlin earned his bachelor's degree in general studies with an emphasis in sports administration from Ball State in May of 1998. He earned his master's degree in physical education in May of 2000 from Tarleton State.
ASSISTANT COACH MORGAN SALOW FIRST SEASON AT UNCG • WISCONSIN, ‘10 Morgan Salow was named an assistant coach for the UNCG volleyball program in April of 2014. Salow, a standout player at Wisconsin from 2005-08, comes to Greensboro after serving as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State the last three seasons. “Morgan stood out from an outstanding pool of candidates that applied for our first assistant position,” Carlin said. “She has competed at the highest level collegiately in the Big Ten and has also coached at the mid-major Division I level, so she brings a unique perspective to the position and understands the approach we’ll need to have for lasting success at UNCG. It was evident very early in the interview process that we shared common philosophies in training, recruiting and building team culture. That comfort level, along with her organizational skills and experience in administrative duties, meant we would be able to establish a good working relationship very quickly, which was important” Before her time at Jacksonville State, Salow put in a three-year stint with the Capital Volleyball Academy as head coach of the Capital 15 Navy club. She guided the team to a top-five finish in the AAU National Championships and a first-place finish in the Badger Region. Salow also spent one season as the head coach of the Capital 17 Elite squad and under her guidance, the 17 Elite squad landed a top-15 finish at the AAU National Championships as well as a third-place finish at the Junior Volleyball Directors Association National Championships. She also contributed two seasons as an assistant coach within the Academy. Salow has worked as a coach and counselor at several collegiate camps, including those at Wisconsin, Georgia, Marquette and UNC Wilmington. During her playing career with the Badgers, Salow played on three NCAA Tournament teams. She made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2005 and guided UW to the Elite Eight. As a sophomore in 2006, Salow helped the Badgers to the Sweet 16 and then, in 2007, her junior season saw them host a regional after being ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation. Her first three seasons in Madison saw the Badgers win 26 matches in each campaign and post a combined 48-12 record in Big Ten play. Salow received her bachelor’s degree from Wisconsin in 2010, where she majored in community leadership and family, consumer and community education. She is a graduate of West Delaware High School in Manchester, Iowa, where she was an all-state volleyball player and set the Hawks’ single-season records for kills and aces.
ASSISTANT COACH EMILY HOLTE FIRST SEASON AT UNCG • GARDNER-WEBB, 14 Emily Holte was named an assistant coach for the UNCG volleyball program in August of 2014. Holte is a recent graduate of GardnerWebb University where she competed for the Bulldogs as an outside hitter from 2010-13. "Even though Emily is just starting out of the gate in her coaching career, she came highly recommended to us as someone that has the attributes you look for in a young and up-and-coming coach,” Carlin said. “That assessment was definitely validated during the hiring process. She comes from an area of the country where the volleyball IQ is very high and she has been in the gym with great volleyball coaches and trainers. This has given her a great enthusiasm for pursuing a career in coaching while also having a realistic grasp on the expectations and responsibilities for a position like this. We are looking forward to working with her and helping her grow toward her potential as a young coach." In 2013, her senior season, Holte served as a team captain and finished second on the squad in total kills and kills per set. She was also third in hitting percentage and blocks per set. Her .241 hitting mark is currently the eighth highest in a single season in program history. Holte’s 2012 campaign saw her lead GWU in aces and aces per set. Holte owns camp coaching experience, working clinics in Boiling Springs, N.C. and also her native state of Minnesota. She also served as a reporting intern for the Foothills News Channel in Shelby, N.C. where she hosted the television show “Day Trippin’” and co-hosted “Cleveland County, Etc.” Holte earned her bachelor of arts degree in broadcast journalism from Gardner-Webb in May of 2014.

THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which begins its 94th season of intercollegiate competition in 2014-15, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 10 institutions and a footprint that spans six states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Virginia. Current league members are The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Furman, Mercer, UNCG, Samford, Chattanooga, VMI, Western Carolina and Wofford. Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.

Team Inductions 1973 Women’s Golf Team (Inducted 2004) Won the first national championship of any kind for UNCG, competing in the AIAW National Tournament in Massachusetts … defeated Rollins College on the final hole for the championship.
1981-82 Women’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2007) National runnersup in the first-ever NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament … amassed a record of 25-3, losing in overtime at Elizabethtown College (Pa.) … began a run of seven consecutive 20-win seasons for the women’s basketball program.

1982 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2004) Won the NCAA Division III National Championship without a home field … facilities at UNCG were under renovation at the time, forcing the team to play its games at near-by Grimsley High School … the team finished 19-3-0, including a 3-0 win over Wake Forest during the regular season and a 2-1 win over Plymouth State in double overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals.
1983 Women’s Tennis Team (Inducted 2008) With four freshmen and two sophomores, team compiled a 20-4 record, including 14-2 in the spring, and finished the NCAA Division III national runners-up … Amy Brown and Lisa Zimmerman earned All-American honors that season.
1994 Baseball Team 1983 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2009) Brought home the school’s second consecutive national title with a dominant season. Went 231-1 on the year, including outscoring its seven conference foes by a combined 44-1. Twelve of its first 13 matches were won by shutout. Won a then-NCAA record 23 matches, including rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the national title match to defeat Claremont.
1995-96 Men’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2012) The 1995-96 men’s basketball team was the first men’s basketball team to reach the NCAA Division I Tournament after posting a 20-10 overall record and an 11-3 mark in Big South Conference play ... The Spartans, under the direction of head coach Randy Peele, won the Big South Tournament title in just their second appearance all-time, posting victories over Coastal Carolina (78-67), Charleston Southern (69-60) and Liberty (69-53) ... UNCG advanced to the NCAA Tournament at the Southeast Region in Orlando, Fla., falling to No. 7 Cincinnati, 66-61.
(Inducted 2010) The 1994 Spartan baseball squad became the first team in school history to record a victory in an NCAA tournament at the Division I level … In just its fourth year of existence, UNCG went 39-18 on the way to a Big South Conference title and 2-2 at the NCAA South Regional, defeating Southeast Louisiana and Tulane while falling twice to national power Southern California. 1987-88 Women’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2013) The 1987-88 women’s basketball team becomes the eighth team inducted into the UNCG Hall of Fame ... The squad posted a 26-7 overall record and a 13-1 mark in conference play before advancing all the way to the NCAA Division III National Semifinals ... The Spartans’ 26 wins are second most in program history, while their 13 conference wins are the most in program history ... The Spartans owned one of the most prolific scoring teams in program history in 1987-88 as they broke the 100-point barrier seven times that season ... Additionally, that team still holds five of the top eight single-game scoring outputs in program history, including a program-record 139 points against Averett College. ... In fact, the victory over Averett was the largest in program history as UNCG won by 100 points (139-39).

Pat Hielscher - Volleyball Coach (Inducted 2001) Coached UNCG’s first volleyball team in 1970 … guided Spartans to a 106-30 record and a NCAIAW state title in 1974.
Tom Martin - Men’s Basketball, Supporter (Inducted 2002) UNCG’s first male president of Alumni Board of Directors … served as tri-captain of the first two UNCG men’s basketball teams.
Maxine Allen - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2001) Garnered national attention as duckpin bowler … set world records and earned a top national ranking.
Mike Sweeney - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2003) Amassed 55 goals and 27 assists in his three seasons at UNCG (198083) … member of 1982 and 1983 NCAA III national championship teams … led the team in scoring in 1981 and 1982 and was a first-team All-American in 1983.
Dr. David B. Knight - Administrator (Inducted 2004) Not only a leader in the transition from Division III to Division I, but a leader on the national scene as UNCG’s Faculty Athletics Representative … became the only FAR to serve on the Div. I, II and III levels … served as chair of the NCAA’s first Division I Academics / Eligibility / Compliance Cabinet and served as a consultant to the NCAA on numerous academic reform issues.
Michael Parker - Men’s Soccer Coach (Inducted 2005) Second active coach to be inducted (first male) … winner of more than 400 collegiate matches, including more than 300 at UNCG … led Spartans to NCAA Division III national championships in 1985, 1986 and 1987.
Wendy Engelmann-Gettings - Women’s Basketball (Inducted 2002) Scored 1,378 points and dished out a school-record 574 assists … was a third-team All-American in 1983-84.
Andrew Mehalko - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2002) Led UNCG to three (1983, 1985 and 1986) NCAA Division III national championships in his four seasons with the Spartans.

Nancy Porter, Women’s Golf Coach (Inducted 2005) One of the pioneers of women’s athletics at UNCG … coached the UNCG women’s golf team to the 1973 national championship … also considered one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, participating in women’s golf in the 1940s.
Liz Gremillion - Volleyball (Inducted 2006) One of the best setters to ever play for the Spartans, recording over 4,000 assists in her career … named 1995 Big South Conference Player of the Year.
Jo Ann Messick - Women’s Basketball, Women’s Tennis, Field Hockey (Inducted 2006) Three-sport competitor at UNCG in the 1970’s … four-year standout in field hockey, earning Deep South All-Star accolades three times … six-time participant in National Field Hockey Festivals, including three while at UNCG.
Tonka Maynor - Baseball (Inducted 2007) Ten years after graduation, still ranked on the top 10 list at UNCG in every offensive statistical category … hit .363 in his four seasons at UNCG, logging 239 hits … holds UNCG record for career RBI with 171.
Larry Hargett - Men’s Basketball Coach (Inducted 2007) Coached UNCG to its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament berth, coming at the Division III level … finished the 1979-80 season 16-12 to earn its first NCAA bid.
Cathy Roberts - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) Has spent virtually entire career - beginning as a student - working in athletics at UNC Greensboro, overseeing athletic facilities and operations and serving as the Senior Women’s Administrator.
Karyn Thompson Voelz - Softball (Inducted 2008) Most prolific hitter in UNCG softball history. Inducted 12 years after graduation and still ranked in top six in 12 offensive categories … led UNCG to 14986-2 mark and three NCAA play-in series during her time at UNCG.
Scott Hartzell - Men’s Basketball (Inducted 2006) Led UNCG to its first Division I NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bid, in which UNCG nearly upset Cincinnati … graduated as UNCG’s all-time leading scorer and set every UNCG 3-point shooting standard in his career … led the team in scoring in three of his four seasons.
Jim Swiggett - Coach, Administrator (Inducted 2006) Pioneer in men’s athletics at UNCG … served as men’s basketball coach from 1968-75 and started men’s golf program, serving as coach from 1967-79 … also served as the university’s second Men’s Intercollegiate Division Coordinator.
Becky Morgan - Women’s Golf (Inducted 2007) One of the most notable athletic alumni as a member of the LPGA Tour … won the Big South individual championship three times and earned Big South Player of the Year (1995, 1996, 1997) … a three-time All-American, won medalist honors 10 times … qualified for the NCAA Regional all four years, earning a spot in the national event three times … an Academic All-American in 1997.
Dr. June Galloway - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) Served as the Coordinator of Women’s Athletics until her passing in 1974, helping to develop the first formal athletics program at UNCG.
Siggi Eyjolffson - Men’s Soccer (Inducted September 2008) Three-time All-American and two-time Academic All-American … UNCG’s all-time leading scorer with 185 points, recording 75 goals and 35 assists in his four seasons.
Joseph Caldeira - Men’s Golf (Inducted 2009) A second-team AllAmerican selection in 1979 ... was the first male student-athlete to earn All-American honors in any sport ... finished 10th in the 1979 NCAA Division III Championship.
Dock Kelly - Wrestling (Inducted 2006) One of UNCG’s first-ever qualifiers for the NCAA Championships (1996) … compiled a 50-34 mark despite competing with birth defects that left him without part of an arm and a leg. Honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with its Medal of Courage.
Ali Lord - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2007) UNCG’s record holder for single-season and career goals … tallied 20 or more goals in three seasons … had a single-season record 26 goals in 1996, earning All-American honors … Big South Player of the Year in 1996 and SoCon Player of the Year in 1998.
Nelson Bobb - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) UNCG’s Director of Athletics for more than 25 years … Led the program through its transition from Division III to Division II to Division I and from the Big South Conference into the Southern Conference.
Dr. Frank Pleasants - Administrator (Inducted 2007) Served as the Coordinator of Men’s Athletics, helping to develop the first formal athletics program at UNCG beginning in 1967.
Joe Stanton - Wrestling (Inducted 2008) Compiled a 98-25 mark in his four seasons at UNCG, qualifying for three NCAA championships to make him the first male to qualify for an NCAA championship as an individidual … was UNCG’s winningest wrestler for 11 years.
Christine Hornak - Softball (Inducted 2009) Won 52 games over two seasons pitching for UNCG. Led the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1997 while earning Big South Pitcher of the Year honors.
Missi Olson Kovachev - Volleyball (Inducted 2009) Led UNCG to 108 wins in her four seasons as a Spartan, despite the program being in transition during its climb to Division I ... helped the Spartans to 32 wins and an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 1990 ... compiled 1,600 career kills.
Alex Lehnhoff - Men’s Tennis (Inducted 2010) The 1999 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year … as a junior, he won the Southern Conference’s No. 1 flight singles title … won a school-record 27 matches in 1996-97, a mark that stood for 13 years … went 94-37 in singles play during his career and also won more than 60 doubles matches.
Melinda Goodson - Women’s Basketball (Inducted 2011) One of just two women’s basketball players to have her number retired, Goodson (1997-2000) finished her career as the school’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,464 points – tops in UNCG’s Division I era ... Led the Spartans to their first NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 1998 as UNCG posted a 21-8 overall record.
Dominic Pattie - Baseball (Inducted 2012) Four-year letterwinner for the Spartans, playing second base and helping UNCG post a 148-78 record ... Holds the career records for hits (299), runs (218), at-bats (867) and stolen bases (115), while ranking third all-time in total bases (400) ... Third Team All-America honoree in 1997 when he helped the Spartans post a program-record 45 victories.
Melody Cope - Softball Head Coach (Inducted 2013) Melody Cope was the Spartans’ softball head coach for six seasons from 1992-1997 and led UNCG to a 220-129-3 record (.629) during her tenure ... She is the all-time leader in wins in UNCG softball history and helped the Spartans to four conference tournament championships along with four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Ty Buckner - Administrator (Inducted 2010) Helped build the foundation of the Athletics Hall of Fame and served as the school’s first-ever full-time sports information director when the university was transitioning from Division III to Division I.
Eric Cuthrell - Men’s Basketball (Inducted 2011) Two-time First-Team AllBig South selection and a key member of UNCG’s first Division I NCAA Tournament squad ... Scored 983 points, grabbed 859 rebounds and blocked a then-UNCG career record 183 shots ... Led the Spartans to a Big South Conference Tournament championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament berth in 1996.
Doug Hamilton - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2011) Four-year letter winner (1981-83, 1985) at UNCG and was a key member of three NCAA Division III national championship squads (1982-83, 1985) ... A co-captain in 1985, Hamilton was a first-team all-South Region and all-Dixie Conference selection in 1985. UNCG was 78-11-2 (.868) during his four seasons.
Jack Poland - Women’s Soccer Coach (Inducted 2012) Spent 13 seasons at the helm of the Spartans, guiding UNCG from its inaugural season in 1988 through the transition to NCAA Division I ... Led his teams to a 163-92-8 record (.620) during his career and seven regular season titles in the Big South and Southern Conferences (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 & 2000).
Raila Maisonlahti - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2010) During her four seasons (1994-97), the Spartans compiled a 59-234 mark, including a perfect 22-0-0 record in Big South and Southern Conference play … the 1997 squad set school marks for wins (19), shutouts (13), overall points, goals and assists.
Tere Dail - Volleyball Coach (Inducted 2011) Served as UNCG’s women’s volleyball head coach from 1979-1999, amassing a career record of 490-259 (.654), leading the Spartans to four NCAA Tournaments and 14 seasons of 20 or more victories ...Dail’s victory total represents a UNCG record, 384 more than second place. Her 1984 & 1989 teams set the school record for wins in a season with 34.
Jason Parsons - Baseball (Inducted 2012) Four-year letterwinner for the Spartan baseball program as a righthanded pitcher, helping UNCG post a 148-78 record during his career ... Spartans’ all-time leader in wins (34) and saves (19), while placing second in appearances (118), third in innings pitched (324.2) and fourth in career ERA (3.31) ... Owns a 34-8 career record.
David Whiteside - Men’s Basketball (Inducted 2012) Two-year letterwinner for the Spartans as a post player, helping UNCG to a 33-20 overall record and a 22-6 mark in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference ... Averaged 16.4 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per contest in 51 outings while connecting on 64.0 percent (319-of-560) from the field and 86.2 percent (200-of-232) from the free throw line in his career.
Alejandro Moreno - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2013) Alejandro Moreno was a four-year letterwinner and starter for the men’s soccer program from 1998-2001 helping the Spartans record a 57-27-3 record (.672) during his career ... He was a fourtime First Team All-Region selection and a four-time All-Conference recipient.

Volleyball Enrichment Fund You can now make a gift to the UNCG volleyball program through an enrichment fund for the sport. Each donation will see 80% go directly to the volleyball program to help fund the team’s highest priorities and 20% goes into the athletic scholarship fund, which supports all athletic scholarships, including volleyball, so 100% of your gift is going to help the volleyball program.
