Student-athletes at UNCG have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the years. Although the athletic department celebrated its 45th season in 2010-11, athletics at UNCG date back to the 1940s in the days before the university became co-ed. Golfer Nancy Porter, who went on to a successful pro career, is regarded as one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, competing in tournaments on the national level in the late 1940s. In 1963, as the university prepared to go co-ed, UNCG began to formally organize athletic teams. Women’s basketball, under head coach Ellen Griffin, women’s tennis, women’s golf and field hockey were started. LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann was on one of the early UNCG women’s golf teams. In 1967, UNCG began men’s athletics and the intercollegiate athletics program received formal recognition from the university. In the fall of 1967, the Spartan was adopted as the program’s mascot. In 1968, UNCG’s men’s teams joined the Dixie Athletic Conference, known today as the USA South Conference, on the NCAA Division III level. Women’s teams competed as part of the AIAW early on, with UNCG being one of the lead organizers of the organization. Two of the first men’s sports were basketball and bowling. In 1971, with the emergence of the five-player rule in women’s basketball, UNCG finished fourth in the National Collegiate Tournament. Two years later, the women’s golf team won the AIAW national title – UNCG’s first-ever team national crown. Porter coached the squad and future professional golfer Donna Horton White was on the squad. Since then, UNCG has enjoyed a number of successes: • Five national titles in men’s soccer during the 1980s and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis. • An unprecedented five-year move from Division III to Division II to Division I -- went from Division III in 1987, to Division II in 1988-90 and have been Division I since 1991. • A trip to the “Big Dance” – the NCAA men’s basketball tournament – in just its fifth year of Division I status. • Men’s soccer coach Michael Parker and women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee were the first to lead teams to the NCAA tournament

in all three divisions. • A baseball squad built from scratch by Mike Gaski that made it to the NCAA tournament in just its fifth season of play. • A men’s soccer program that conquered all comers for two months to become the No. 1 team in the nation in 2004, the beginning of UNCG’s three straight NCAA tournament Round of 16 appearances and four in five years. • Kyle Hines, who became just the sixth player in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career. • Individuals like wrestler Dock Kelly, who overcame birth defects that left him without legs, qualifying for the NCAA Championship. • Students like Siggi Eyjolffson, who earned Academic All-American honors three times. • Men’s basketball games moved off campus to the Greensboro Coliseum, one of the premier facilities in the country. From major league pitcher Brian Moehler to MLS champion Alejandro Moreno to LPGA star Becky Morgan, Spartan alumni have gone on to successful careers in sports. That success isn’t just limited to the playing field, either. The late Doug Hamilton was one of the pioneers within MLS and played on the UNCG national championship teams of the 1980s. Eyjolffson returned to his native Iceland and is one of the top people in his native country’s soccer federation, currently serving as their women’s national team head coach. Spartan athletics has had its success stories over the years … and the best is yet to come.

FIFTH YEAR • WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY • 1997 Justin Maullin enters his fifth season as the head men’s soccer coach at UNCG in 2014 and his 10th season on the Spartans’ coaching staff. Maullin has guided the Spartans to a pair of Southern Conference regular season championships as well as an appearance in the 2010 NCAA Tournament in his first four seasons at the helm of UNCG. Last year, the Spartans finished third in the SoCon and placed two players on the all-league team in seniors Mahdi Ali and Oddur Gudmundsson. UNCG also had two members on the SoCon All-Freshman Team in Hugo Coicaud and Rouven Wahlfeldt. The Spartans have had a member on the rookie team in all four seasons under Maullin’s guidance, including three seasons with multiple honors. In 2012, the Spartans placed two players on the All-SoCon team in senior forward Hakan Ilhan and goalkeeper Peyton Ford. It marked the third straight year that Ilhan has been honored in the SoCon postseason awards. Additionally, freshman Lukas Zarges was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team. In 2011, Maullin coached UNCG to its second-straight SoCon title with a 10-8-2 overall record and a 5-1-1 mark in league play. The Spartans allowed just one goal against in SoCon play, out-scoring opponents 13-1 en route to its 12th at the NCAA Division I level. The Spartans had five members named to the Southern Conference postseason teams. Senior Kris Byrd and junior forward Hakan Ilhan picked up First Team honors while junior goalkeeper Peyton Ford and freshman Austin Miller picked up Second Team accolades. Maullin spent the 2010 season with the “interim” head coaching title but made his promotion an easy decision for UNCG Director of Athletics Kim Record, who officially made him the program’s seventh head coach Nov. 22, 2010. Maullin guided the Spartans to a share of the Southern Conference regular season title, the SoCon Tournament championship and the program’s 12th NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. He was the easy choice for SoCon Coach of the Year honors, becoming the first rookie head coach in the 22-year history of the conference tournament to claim the title. Maullin, who succeeded long-time head coach Michael Parker, led UNCG to a 12-6-3 overall record in 2010 but the Spartans’ play down the stretch was the difference in the season. Midway through the year, UNCG owned a 5-5-1 record in early October. The Spartans came to life over the final six weeks of the season, enjoying an 11-match unbeaten streak (8-0-3), which culminated with a 1-0 win over Furman in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game. A 3-0 loss at Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament couldn’t put a damper on a magical season. Maullin had just nine players return from the 2009 roster and brought 19 new players into the program. Seven of those new players were in the starting lineup on opening night. Among the new players were five all-conference selections, including the Southern Conference’s eventual leading scorer Hakan Ilhan. Maullin was promoted to the UNCG top spot after spending five years as the program’s full-time assistant form 2005-2009. During his time as an assistant, the Spartans won two SoCon regular season titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, 2006 and 2008. A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Maullin spent six seasons as an assistant at UCF before coming to UNCG. During Maullin’s tenure at UCF, the Golden Knights won 10 or more matches in five out of six seasons, advancing to the NCAA tournament each of his last three seasons. In his six overall seasons at UNCG, the Spartans have advanced to the NCAA tournament four times, with three of those appearances resulting in advancement to the round of 16. Maullin attended William Carey College in Gulfport, Miss. He graduated from William Carey in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing. During his time with the Crusaders, he served as a team captain and earned NAIA Academic All-America honors. He helped William Carey rise to a No. 1 national ranking his senior year. Maullin was drafted into the Eastern Indoor Soccer League. He played two years for the Cocoa Expos and two years for the Central Florida Kraze. In 1993 he signed with the New Orleans Gamblers. After his graduation from William Carey, he stayed on with the Crusaders as an assistant men’s soccer coach for two seasons, helping to guide the Crusaders to back-to-back NAIA national semifinal appearances. He helped William Carey to a No. 1-ranking again as an assistant coach in 1997 and 1998. In April 2007, Maullin was inducted into William Carey’s Wall of Fame for his post-graduation successes. Four years later, he was inducted as a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class at William Carey. Maullin earned a master’s degree from UCF in business administration in December 2001. He and his wife, Brittany, reside in High Point. They welcomed their first son, Hylton, in May of 2012.

17TH YEAR • UNCG • 1994 Scott Brittsan enters in his 17th year as an assistant coach with the UNCG men’s soccer program. This is his fifth season in a full-time role after serving as a part-time assistant for 12 years. During his 17 years on staff, Brittsan has helped the Spartans win six regular season Southern Conference titles, including the past two as the top assistant for head coach Justin Maullin. He has been part of six NCAA Tournament appearances on the staff, including five Sweet 16 showings. Brittsan has also been part of four NCAA Tournament appearances for the Spartans as a coach, helping UNCG make the tournament in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. Brittsan assists in all aspects of day-to-day operations, including practice planning and recruiting. He also helps to coordinate a portion of the team’s strength and conditioning workouts. He is also an assistant director of the Spartan Soccer Camps. Prior to joining the Spartan staff, Brittsan was the varsity boys’ soccer coach at Greensboro Day School, where he compiled a record of 77-20 in five years. In 1996, Brittsan was named Guilford County Coach of the Year and PACIS Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bengals to a conference title and the state independent schools’ title game. Brittsan has also been active in Greensboro Soccer Club, where he has coached teams to two state titles. He was the 2003 Boys Classic Division Coach of the Year for the Greensboro Soccer Club. He is currently an assistant director with the Greensboro Soccer Club, overseeing the program’s U-15 and U-18 divisions. In addition, he also coordinates the strength and conditioning programs for the U-15 and U-18 divisions. Brittsan has also previous served as an assistant coach in the North Carolina ODP program. A 1994 graduate of UNCG, Brittsan was a three-year member of the Spartan men’s soccer team and was a member of the Division II national runner-up squad in 1989.

SECOND YEAR • UNCG • 2009 Joe Burnett enters his second season as an assistant coach for Justin Maullin in 2014. Burnett was a four-year letterwinner for the Spartans from 2005-08 and has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville. Burnett, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., helped lead the Spartans to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his playing career, including being named the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. He helped UNCG win SoCon Tournament titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as well as claiming league regular season titles in 2005 and 2007. The Spartans advanced to the SoCon Tournament championship game in all four years of his playing career. Burnett started in 22 of 23 games as a senior, logging 1,713 minutes on the pitch. His play on the backline helped the Spartans Cinderella run in the SoCon Tournament as they won from the seventh seed. He earned SoCon Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament as he led the defense that allowed just two goals in three games. UNCG kept the momentum going in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 as it knocked off Duke 2-0 in the first round before defeating Loyola (Md.) 2-1 to advance to the Final 16. The Spartans’ season and run ended as they fell to South Florida on penalty kicks. In his first two seasons, UNCG finished ranked No. 18 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, compiling a 32-14-2 record. During his four-year career, the Spartans amassed 53 victories overall, including a 16-10-1 mark in SoCon play. Burnett earned his bachelor of arts in history from UNCG in 2009. Also, he spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, N.C.

The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which begins its 94th season of intercollegiate competition in 2014, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), to tackling the issue of freshman eligibility (1922), to developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the 3-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pac-12 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on Capital One Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 20 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions, including Wofford volleyball player Rachel Woodlee, who earned the honor two years ago. The Conference currently consists of 10 members in six states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 20 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference assumed stewardship of men’s lacrosse from the Atlantic Sun in 2014-15, making it the SoCon’s 20th varsity sport The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first-class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of 1921, and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league, including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932, at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league, which began play in 1933. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions, including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools – Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest – departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. A third major shift occurred in 2012-13, when five members announced their departures and three schools were added. College of Charleston announced its decision to leave for the Colonial Athletic Association following the 2012-13 season, while Appalachian State (Sun Belt), Davidson (Atlantic 10), Elon (Colonial) and Georgia Southern (Sun Belt) announced they would depart following the 2013-14 campaign. At the Southern Conference’s 2013 spring meetings in Hilton Head Island, S.C., the league officially extended invitations to former members East Tennessee State and VMI, as well as Mercer, to join the league for the 2014-15 academic year. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 10 institutions and a footprint that spans six states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Current league members are The Citadel, ETSU, Furman, Mercer, UNCG, Samford, Chattanooga, VMI, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Kim Record - Director of Athletics Kim Record is in her sixth year as the Director of Athletics at UNCG in 2014-15. Record was named to the post Sept. 27, 2009 and leads a program that fields men’s and women’s teams in 17 sports, over 250 student-athletes and 70 employees. She was recently honored as one of 28 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year award recipients at the 2014 NACDA Convention in Orlando in the NCAA Divion I-AAA category. Since arriving, Record has reshaped and revamped the athletic department across the board. UNCG has seen improvements on the field and has stimulated interest within the campus and Greensboro communities. During her first five years at UNCG, Record has implemented ‘The Spartan Way’ strategic plan in an effort to ensure the continued success and future improvement of Spartan Athletics. The plan includes five core values and six goals for the department summarized with the motto – ‘We discover and develop champions in life.’ Record has guided UNCG to success on and off the court during her time in Greensboro. In 2011-12 alone, the Spartans posted five regular season titles under her watch, including championship banners in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and a divisional title in men’s basketball. UNCG also had five Southern Conference Player of the Year award winners and five conference Coach of the Year honorees last season.
