Student-athletes at UNCG have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the years. Although the athletic department celebrated its 45th season in 2010-11, athletics at UNCG date back to the 1940s in the days before the university became co-ed.

Golfer Nancy Porter, who went on to a successful pro career, is regarded as one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, competing in tournaments on the national level in the late 1940s.

In 1963, as the university prepared to go co-ed, UNCG began to formally organize athletic teams. Women’s basketball, under head coach Ellen Griffin, women’s tennis, women’s golf and field hockey were started. LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann was on one of the early UNCG women’s golf teams.

In 1967, UNCG began men’s athletics and the intercollegiate athletics program received formal recognition from the university. In the fall of 1967, the Spartan was adopted as the program’s mascot.

In 1968, UNCG’s men’s teams joined the Dixie Athletic Conference, known today as the USA South Conference, on the NCAA Division III level. Women’s teams competed as part of the AIAW early on, with UNCG being one of the lead organizers of the organization.

Two of the first men’s sports were basketball and bowling.

In 1971, with the emergence of the five-player rule in women’s basketball, UNCG finished fourth in the National Collegiate Tournament.

Two years later, the women’s golf team won the AIAW national title – UNCG’s first-ever team national crown. Porter coached the squad and future professional golfer Donna Horton White was on the squad.

Since then, UNCG has enjoyed a number of successes: • Five national titles in men’s soccer during the 1980s and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis.

• An unprecedented five-year move from Division III to Division II to Division I -- went from Division III in 1987, to Division II in 1988-90 and have been Division I since 1991.

• A trip to the “Big Dance” – the NCAA men’s basketball tournament – in just its fifth year of Division I status.

• Men’s soccer coach Michael Parker and women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee were the first to lead teams to the NCAA tournament

in all three divisions.

• A baseball squad built from scratch by Mike Gaski that made it to the NCAA tournament in just its fifth season of play.

• A men’s soccer program that conquered all comers for two months to become the No. 1 team in the nation in 2004, the beginning of UNCG’s three straight NCAA tournament Round of 16 appearances and four in five years.

• Kyle Hines, who became just the sixth player in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career.

• Individuals like wrestler Dock Kelly, who overcame birth defects that left him without legs, qualifying for the NCAA Championship.

• Students like Siggi Eyjolffson, who earned Academic All-American honors three times.

• Men’s basketball games moved off campus to the Greensboro Coliseum, one of the premier facilities in the country.

From major league pitcher Brian Moehler to MLS champion Alejandro Moreno to LPGA star Becky Morgan, Spartan alumni have gone on to successful careers in sports. That success isn’t just limited to the playing field, either. The late Doug Hamilton was one of the pioneers within MLS and played on the UNCG national championship teams of the 1980s.

Eyjolffson returned to his native Iceland and is one of the top people in his native country’s soccer federation, currently serving as their women’s national team head coach.

SIXTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH • LYNCHBURG, 2000

Linh Nguyen enters his sixth season as head coach of UNCG’s cross country and indoor track and field teams while he is in his seventh year at the helm of the Spartans’ outdoor track and field teams. Additionally, Nguyen is in his 12th year overall with the Spartans, having served as an assistant coach from 2001-06.

Nguyen has transformed the UNCG programs into a perennial contender in the Southern Conference and the Spartans are making noise on a national level. Under his guidance, 2011-12 was one of the best years in program history.

Nguyen was named the SoCon Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading both the men’s and women’s programs to conference titles. The Spartan men dominated their competition last year by claiming five of the first 11 spots at the SoCon meet. They tallied a team score of 26, the lowest (and therefore best) by any team in the event in 13 years. The Spartans’ margin of victory of 47 points was the largest by any squad in 20 years.

The UNCG Women won last year’s event with a total score of 35, which was the best by any program in seven years. The Spartans won the event by 45 points, which represented a radical departure from form in the SoCon meet, the previous eight of which had been decided by a total of 42 points.

Nguyen coached both SoCon Runners of the Year in 2011 as Paul Chelimo picked up top honors on the men’s side and Ashley Schnell claimed honors on the women’s side for the second straight year. Additionally, Paul Katam was named the league Freshman of the Year on the men’s side. The Spartans placed nine members on the All-SoCon teams last year, a program record.

Chelimo picked up All-America honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, placing 13th in the race to become the first runner in school history to earn All-America honors.

Nguyen continued the Spartans’ success on the track as Chelimo and Schnell won the indoor mile races at the SoCon championship. Additionally, UNCG posted SoCon championships in both men’s and women’s distance medley relay races with the women posting a league record time of 11:34.99.

In outdoor track, the Spartans took their success even farther as both Chelimo and Katam won their races at the NCAA Regional in the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters, respectively. Both runners would go on to earn All-America honors at the national championships with Chelimo finishing as the national runner-up in his event.

Additionally, Schnell was awarded the SoCon and NCAA postgraduate scholarships while also being nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year.

She was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team by CoSIDA.

In 2010-11, Nguyen saw six student-athletes earn 12 All-SoCon honors, including four Southern Conference titles, and two who advanced to NCAA Regionals. The year started off great as Schnell became the first runner in school history to win the Southern Conference title in cross country and was also named the SoCon Women’s Runner of the Year. She would also go on to earn All-Region honors, a first in school history.

Shaina Sumney was also named first-team All-SoCon in cross country and helped lead her team to then school-best third place finish. The men’s team also had a then school-best second place finish as Joey Thompson was runner-up at the SoCon Championship and earned first-team honors along with Mike Koech.

The Spartans’ carried that momentum into the track & field season as Schnell captured the 3,000-meter title at the SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships, becoming the first-ever women’s runner in school history to accomplish that goal. Nguyen’s team continued its success with a SoCon title in the women’s distance medley relay, as well. On the men’s side, Kenny Hinman was tabbed to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, while Katam earned the same distinction in the 5,000 meters.

UNCG would continue its impressive year during the outdoor season when Schnell won the 1,500-meter SoCon title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in the 5,000 meters, becoming the first-ever female in school history to do that. Chelsea and Shaina Sumney were named All-SoCon in the 5,000 meters after finishing second and third in the event, respectively.

On the men’s team, Katam qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 10,000 meters and was just one spot away from advancing to nationals.

During the 2009-10 season, the Spartans saw improvements both as a team and individually under Nguyen. The men’s cross country team came in third place at the SoCon Championships to turn in a top-five performance for the sixth-straight season. Mike Koech earned runner-up honors and Thompson came in fifth place as they were both named to the All-SoCon First Team. Andy Clyne also earned second-team honors to mark the first time in school history that UNCG has had three runners earn All-SoCon honors in the same season. Sherrika Jordan once again led the women’s team as she finished in eighth place to earn Second-Team All-SoCon honors.

The Spartans carried that momentum into the indoor track & field season in 2010 as Koech and Thompson once again led the way. Thompson earned All-SoCon honors in the 3,000 meters for the second time in as many years in the event as he was edged out and finished in second place. He was also the runner-up in the mile to earn All-SoCon honors in that event. Koech was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in the 5,000 meters, as he set a new school record in the race.

In the outdoor season, UNCG continued to rack up Southern Conference awards. Thompson earned runner-up honors once again, this time in the 1,500 meters, to earn All-SoCon honors.

Senior TJ Wyatt also performed well at the SoCon Championships as he was named All-SoCon in the 800 meters after finishing in second place. Taylor Day was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in the 1,500 meters, as well. On the women’s side, Shaina Sumney was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in the 1,500 meters.

In the 2008-09 season, Spartans Jermaine Coore and Sherrika Jordan were named All-SoCon at the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships. In indoor, Thompson broke the school record in the 3,000 meters and earned All-SoCon honors

2012 UNCG C r o s s C o un t r y in the event too. Taylor Hurst was named All-SoCon in the 800 meters and Kerry Hartman was named all-freshman in the mile. During the outdoor season, Thompson was named All-SoCon in the 1,500 meters and AJ Savoia earned All-SoCon honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. TJ Wyatt was also named All-SoCon in the 800 meters after earning runner-up honors.

In 2007-08, Sherrika Jordan became the seventh runner in UNCG women’s cross country history to run sub-23:00 in the 6,000-meters. Jordan ran 22:58.65 at the NCAA Southeast Regionals, which was the eighth-fastest time in UNCG history. The 2008 indoor season saw four men’s runners earn All-SoCon honors, including the men’s distance medley relay team earning All-SoCon honors for the fourth time in five seasons. Jess Weber broke the school record in the 800 meters and Josh Wyatt recorded a new record at the 5,000 meters. During outdoor, the men saw Clyne (800m) and AJ Savoia (3,000m steeplechase) race their way to All-SoCon distinctions, earning UNCG’s first All-SoCon honors for outdoor in two year. For the women, Weber concluded her career by setting a new record in the 800 meters in her final meet of the season, clocking 2:17.81 at the Duke Asics Twilight and becoming just the second Spartan in program history to run sub-2:20 in the 800 meters.

In his first season as head coach of the cross country teams, the men posted their highest finish at the SoCon Championship meet, placing third out of 11 teams. Individually, Josh Wyatt and Nick Vaccaro finished fifth and eighth, respectively, garnering All-SoCon honors and becoming the first set of Spartans to receive cross country All-SoCon honors in the same season. For the women, Jess Weber and Sherrika Jordan each registered a 6K time that ranked among UNCG’s top-25 times.

During the 2007 indoor season, Jeff Williams won his third-straight title in the 800 meters en route to earning All-SoCon status. The distance medley relay team of Vaccaro, Terry Wyatt, Williams and Xavier Rutz also earned All-Son honors with a second-place finish at the SoCon Championships.

Nguyen was named head coach of the Spartans at the start of the 2006 outdoor season. In his inaugural season at the helm, both Jeff Williams (800 meters) and Charles Jones (triple jump) qualified for the NCAA East Regionals.

Prior to being named head coach, Nguyen served as an assistant coach and as a volunteer assistant coach for the Spartans. In his four years as an assistant, Nguyen produced 24 All-Conference honorees, one NCAA Regional qualifier and one NCAA National participant. Charles Jones became UNCG’s first NCAA Regional and National qualifier in 2005. As a volunteer assistant, Nguyen coached Heidi (Sloop) Pinkerton to All-SoCon cross country status in 2002.

Prior to UNCG, Nguyen was a volunteer assistant coach at Lynchburg College, his alma mater, for one season. During the 2000-01 school year, the Hornets swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor.

Nguyen was an eight-time All-ODAC selection. He led Lynchburg to a pair of top-five finishes at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Cross Country meet, including one third-place finish. He also took the Hornets to a conference title in 1999, while capturing ODAC Runner of the Year Honors.

Nguyen, a native of East Hampton, N.Y., graduated from Lynchburg College in 2000 with his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. He received his master’s in exercise physiology from UNCG in 2007.

FIRST SEASON • UNCG, 2012

Michelle Chewens enters her first year as assistant coach with the UNCG cross country and track and field programs. Chewens, a four-year letterwinner in both track and field and cross county, spent last season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Spartans during the track and field seasons. She concluded her running career last fall with the cross country team running a season-best 6,000-meter time of 24:56 in the Panorama Farms Invite and a 5,000-meter season best at the Southern Conference championships in a time of 19:03.

Chewens, a native of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., was a four-time Academic All-SoCon recipient during her career. She posted a career-best 18:59 in the 5,000-meters at the Wake Forest Relays in 2009 while posting a 24:39.8 in the 6,000-meter cross country race at the Colonial Inter-Regional in 2007. In indoor track, she posted a personal best and the then fourth-fastest time in school history in the mile clocking in at 5:16.80 in the 2008-09 SoCon Championships. In outdoor track, she posted personal bests in the 1,500-meters (4:48.14) her senior campaign while posting a best time in the 3,000-meters (10:45) her sophomore year.

FIRST SEASON • NC STATE, 2004

Chad Pearson enters his first season as an assistant coach with the UNCG cross country and track and field programs. Pearson joins the Spartans after spending time as a volunteer assistant coach at Charlotte (2012) and North Carolina State (2010-11). He also was the graduate assistant coach at North Carolina State from 2004-2006 working with both the cross country and track and field programs.

Pearson was a standout at NC State where he was a three-time NCAA All-America honoree in cross country and track and field. He helped the Wolfpack win back-to-back ACC cross country team championships as well as earning Academic All-America honors during his career. He was a United States Olympic Trials track and field qualifier and was the United States 10,000-meter Road National Champion. Additionally, he was a member of the United States Junior National Cross Country Tram.

Dr. Linda Brady - Chanellor Dr. Linda P. Brady became the 10th chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on August 1, 2008. Previously she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

At UNCG Dr. Brady has led efforts to establish a mixed-use village designed to recapture theresidential character of the university, launched an academic Board of Trustees restructuring and program review process designed to guide fuDr. Kate R. Barrett ture directions and investment, and positioned intercollegiate athletics as an important element of the student experience.

She is a native New Yorker and the first member of her family to attend college. She earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, a master’s degree in political scien ce from Rutgers University, and her doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University.

From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Brady was an analyst with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense, a period covering both the Carter and Reagan administrations. She served as defense adviser to the Negotiations on Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria and held the same position during the Negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Brady also supported the negotiation and implementation of prepositioning and logistical support agreements with members of NATO and with countries in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. She received the U.S. Department of State Superior Honor award for her work in support of the theater nuclear forces program.

Dr. Brady was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at the United States Military Academy in 1991-92. She has served on the board of the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Brady is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Army. She served as Senior Fellow for Arms Control at the Carter Center of Emory University from 1986 to 1988.

Dr. Brady is married to Gustav “Steve” Heyer, a retired Army officer. She has two adult stepsons and three grandchildren: Stephen Heyer and his wife, Suzanne, live in Richmond, VA with their children Alyx, Megan and Andrew Casey, while Michael Heyer lives in Chicago, IL.

Kim Record - Director of Athletics Kim Record is in her fourth year as the Director of Athletics at UNCG. Record was named to the post Sept. 27, 2009 and leads a program that fields men’s and women’s teams in 17 sports, over 250 student-athletes and 70 employees.

Since arriving, Record has reshaped and revamped the athletic department across the board. UNCG has seen improvements on the field and has stimulated interest within the campus and Greensboro communities.

During her first three years at UNCG, Record has implemented ‘The Spartan Way’ strategic plan in an effort to ensure the continued success and future improvement of Spartan Athletics. The plan includes five core values and six goals for the department summarized with the motto – ‘We discover and develop champions in life.’

Record has guided UNCG to success on and off the court during her time in Greensboro. In 2011-12 alone, the Spartans posted five regular season titles under her watch, including championship banners in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and a divisional title in men’s basketball. UNCG also had five Southern Conference Player of the Year award winners and five conference Coach of the Year honorees last season.

The Spartans have excelled in the classroom, having 92 student-athletes named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12. Additionally, UNCG senior cross country student-athlete Ashley Schnell earned an NCAA winter sport postgraduate scholarship. Schnell and men’s soccer student-athlete Peyton Ford picked up SoCon postgraduate scholarship honors. Women’s basketball student-athlete Amy Clapper also earned the NCAA Women’s Enhancement post-graduate scholarship.

Record guided UNCG through the NCAA Division I Certification process in 2011-12, which must be completed at least once every 10 years. The certified designated denotes that an institution operates its athletics program in compliance with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.

Record, who will serve on the NCAA Championships cabinet in 2012-13, is also the vice-chair of the Greensboro Sports Commission, an active member with the Greensboro Rotary and a member of the Greensboro Sports Council.

Record, in conjunction with Chancellor Dr. Linda P. Brady, helped develop school spirit-building campaigns such as Move In, Sunday Funday, Go Blue Preview and Blue & Gold Fridays.

Record is responsible for the leadership, administration, organization and finances of UNCG’s athletics program, which underwent a major shift in men’s basketball. The Spartan men’s basketball team began playing its games in the Greensboro Coliseum in 2009-10 and enjoyed success last season under SoCon Coach of the Year Wes Miller winning the North Division title. The Spartans will play in the Greensboro Coliseum for the fourth year in 2012-13, hosting 15 games in one of the premier facilities in the region.

Record coordinates fundraising and operation of the Spartan Club with the vice chancellor for university advancement. She oversees efforts to engage alumni, fans and the community with UNCG athletics. The Spartan Club surpassed its annual scholarship fund goal of $300,000 for the 2012 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the scholarship fund. The Spartan Club posted an annual scholarship fund total of $307,479, a 20.7% increase over last year’s mark, increasing their efforts by over $50,000 and surpassing the previous high that was set in 1987.

Record also has a lead role in strategic planning and in athletics facilities development. She helped complete the facility upgrades at the UNCG Baseball Stadium and the renovations of the HHP locker room facilities. The 12,000 square foot HHP facility hosts team lounges, shower facilities and general locker room areas for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country and track, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and softball.

Record, who served as a consultant with ISP Sports before taking her current position, was the senior associate director of athletics at Florida State University from 1995 to 2008, and held a succession of positions at the University of Virginia from 1984-1995, culminating with an appointment as associate director of athletics for administration.

Record emerged from a national search that drew 125 candidates, and is UNCG’s first female athletic director. She is only the second woman to hold an athletic director’s position in the 89-year history of the Southern Conference.

In her 13 years at Florida State, she had a broad range of administrative duties, including serving as a member of the Executive Management Team, which determined and implemented policy decisions for a 19-sport, $50 million intercollegiate program. She directly supervised three sports programs – men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer – and monitored Title IX compliance. Other areas included executive-level staffing; day-to-day departmental operations; serving as liaison with the trademark licensing program; and oversight for marketing, media and public relations, and radio and television contracts.

In construction, she facilitated FSU’s $6 million state-of-the-art soccer and softball stadium and its $10 million men’s and women’s basketball training center. She oversaw a project that showcased the history of athletics at FSU as part of a $100 million facilities improvement plan. Her initial responsibilities as associate director of athletics at FSU included oversight of men’s and women’s tennis, swimming & diving and softball. Record also held the designation of senior woman administrator.

At Virginia, she supervised all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department and specialized in external operations. She implemented marketing and promotional strategies for all 26 sports programs as associate director of athletics for external operations.

She was the executive staff member of a capital campaign team created to raise $50 million. She rose through the ranks at Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, starting out as a sports information intern who was progressively promoted in the department to associate director of athletics for administration.

As a consultant with ISP, Record provided marketing expertise in the area of athletics sports signage, including video boards, scorer’s tables and other digital signage. She has also coordinated purchase and installation between vendor, institution and ISP. Within the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Record has served on both the executive committee and the Director’s Cup Committee. Within the NCAA, she served on the Women’s Soccer Committee and the Regional Soccer Committee.

A native of Charlottesville, she graduated from Virginia and earned an M.S. degree in sports management from Florida State.

She has two sons – Kyle, 24 a graduate student at the University of Virginia, and Josh, 19, a freshman at the College of Charleston.

Team Inductions 1973 Women’s Golf Team

(Inducted 2004) Won the first national championship of any kind for UNCG, competing in the AIAW National Tournament in Massachusetts … defeated Rollins College on the final hole for the championship.

1982 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2004) Won the NCAA Division III National Championship without a home field … facilities at UNCG were under renovation at the time, forcing the team to play its games at near-by Grimsley High School … the team finished 19-3-0, including a 3-0 win over Wake Forest during the regular season and a 2-1 win over Plymouth State in double overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals.

1981-82 Women’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2007) National runnersup in the first-ever NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament … amassed a record of 25-3, losing in overtime at Elizabethtown College (Pa.) … began a run of seven consecutive 20-win seasons for the women’s basketball program.

(Inducted 2009) Brought home the school’s second consecutive national title with a dominant season. Went 23-1-1 on the year, including outscoring its seven conference foes by a combined 44-1. Twelve of its first 13 matches were won by shutout. Won a then-NCAA record 23 matches, including rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the national title match to defeat Claremont.

Lynne Agee - Women’s Basketball Coach (Inducted 2004) The first active head coach to be enshrined … first coach in NCAA history to lead her team to the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions … more than 500 career wins to her credit.

Jim Allen - Administrator (Inducted 2003) Former vice chancellor for student affairs … had oversight on program’s move from Division III to I.

Maxine Allen - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2001) Garnered national attention as duckpin bowler … set world records and earned a top national ranking.

(Inducted 2008) With four freshmen and two sophomores, team compiled a 20-4 record, including 14-2 in the spring, and finished the NCAA Division III national runners-up … Amy Brown and Lisa Zimmerman earned All-American honors that season.

(Inducted 2010) The 1994 Spartan baseball squad became the first team in school history to record a victory in an NCAA tournament at the Division I level … In just its fourth year of existence, UNCG went 39-18 on the way to a Big South Conference title and 2-2 at the NCAA South Regional, defeating Southeast Louisiana and Tulane while falling twice to national power Southern California.

Mike Berticelli - Men’s Soccer Coach (Inducted 2000) Led UNCG to Division III national championships in 1982 and 1983 … guided UNCG to 70-9-5 record (86.3%) in four seasons.

Nelson Bobb - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) UNCG’s Director of Athletics for more than 25 years … Led the program through its transition from Division III to Division II to Division I and from the Big South Conference into the Southern Conference.

Ty Buckner - Administrator (Inducted 2010) Helped build the foundation of the Athletics Hall of Fame and served as the school’s first-ever full-time sports information director when the university was transitioning from Division III to Division I.

Mike Burke - Supporter (Inducted 2001) Led UNCG’s charge in scholarship fundraising … created first athletic endowment in 1987 … raised funds toward a total endowment now valued at more than $4 million.

Marge Burns - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2000) Holds record of 10 North Carolina State Amateur Golf titles … named Carolinas Outstanding Amateur five times … qualified and played in 14 USGA Amateur Championships, as well as six US Open Tournaments.

Joseph Caldeira - Men’s Golf (Inducted 2009) A second-team All-American selection in 1979 ... was the first male student-athlete to earn All-American honors in any sport ... finished 10th in the 1979 NCAA Division III Championship.

Dr. June Galloway - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) Served as the Coordinator of Women’s Athletics until her passing in 1974, helping to develop the first formal athletics program at UNCG.

Liz Gremillion - Volleyball (Inducted 2006) One of the best setters to ever play for the Spartans, recording over 4,000 assists in her career … named 1995 Big South Conference Player of the Year.

Belmar Gunderson - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2000) Participated from 1952-56 at Women’s College … competed in four Wimbledons and 11 United States Lawn Tennis National Championships (now U.S. Open).

Larry Hargett - Men’s Basketball Coach (Inducted 2007) Coached UNCG to its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament berth, coming at the Division III level … finished the 1979-80 season 16-12 to earn its first NCAA bid.

Scott Hartzell - Men’s Basketball (Inducted 2006) Led UNCG to its first Division I NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bid, in which UNCG nearly upset Cincinnati … graduated as UNCG’s all-time leading scorer and set every UNCG 3-point shooting standard in his career … led the team in scoring in three of his four seasons.

Jason Haupt - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2001) Two-time first-team AllAmerican … led UNCG to a Division III national championship in 1987 … UNCG’s all-time leader in goals scored with 77.

Winn Hazlegrove - Softball (Inducted 2005) Three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American honoree … one of UNCG’s greatest softball players, still ranked in the Top 10 in 20 statistical categories at the time of her induction (10 years after her graduation).

Pat Hielscher - Volleyball Coach (Inducted 2001) Coached UNCG’s first volleyball team in 1970 … guided Spartans to a 106-30 record and a NCAIAW state title in 1974.

Christine Hornak - Softball (Inducted 2009) Won 52 games over two seasons pitching for UNCG. Led the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1997 while earning Big South Pitcher of the Year honors.

Dr. David B. Knight - Administrator (Inducted 2004) Not only a leader in the transition from Division III to Division I, but a leader on the national scene as UNCG’s Faculty Athletics Representative … became the only FAR to serve on the Div. I, II and III levels … served as chair of the NCAA’s first Division I Academics / Eligibility / Compliance Cabinet and served as a consultant to the NCAA on numerous academic reform issues.

Alex Lehnhoff - Men’s Tennis (Inducted 2010) The 1999 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year … as a junior, he won the Southern Conference’s No. 1 flight singles title … won a schoolrecord 27 matches in 1996-97, a mark that stood for 13 years … went 94-37 in singles play during his career and also won more than 60 doubles matches.

Ali Lord - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2007) UNCG’s record holder for single-season and career goals … tallied 20 or more goals in three seasons … had a single-season record 26 goals in 1996, earning All-American honors … Big South Player of the Year in 1996 and SoCon Player of the Year in 1998.

Raila Maisonlahti - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2010) During her four seasons (1994-97), the Spartans compiled a 59-234 mark, including a perfect 22-0-0 record in Big South and Southern Conference play … the 1997 squad set school marks for wins (19), shutouts (13), overall points, goals and assists.

The Spartan Club The Spartan Club is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to secure scholarship support for nearly 250 student-athletes who compete in 17 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletic programs at UNCG. UNCG proudly proclaims that 100 percent of Spartan Club contributions go directly to athletic scholarships for deserving student-athletes.

Methods of Giving

Cash, Checks and Credit Card Gifts

Provide the yearly financial resources needed to operate the athletic program. Payments may be spread over the course of a fiscal year (July 1-June 30), but all pledges must be paid by June 30. The university accepts cash, checks and credit cards (American Express, MasterCard, Visa).

Athletic Scholarship Endowments
