My time as a Buckley Public Service Scholar and the experiences that came with it have been the most influential part in why I am going into the field of education. Not only have I been able to find out what I am most passionate about, but I have also learned about the importance of connecting to a community and working together throughout the process. The BPSS program gave me a breadth of opportunities in the education field and allowed me to understand how to truly be a public servant.”

At Carolina, I have explored education through direct, organizational and policy-oriented public service. I taught in the Mississippi Delta, mentored at McDougle Middle School, and tutored in math and science at Seawell Elementary School and Lakewood Montessori. Organizationally, I planned campus panels with Students for Education Reform and conferences with the Roosevelt Institute. I learned to navigate the spheres of research, policy, and practice as a policy major and a national leader in the Roosevelt Institute.” Blake O’Connor
