HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME As we come to the end of a very long, busy and successful term, September feels like a lifetime ago now, so much has happened in the life of UCC during these last four months. We were delighted with the GCSE, level 3 and A-level outcomes this summer, which come at a time when national changes to courses and assessments bring ever more uncertainty in schools up and down the country. Prize Day 2017 continued the tradition of a high-quality celebration event recognising all that is valued at UCC. Joey Essex showed a genuine interest in the school and the students, although the real stars of the day were our prize winners and performers. Our sporting successes – both individual and team events – have been terrific and we also have more students than ever following the Duke of Edinburgh award. The recent Escape to Safety event inspired us all. Our students engaged with empathy and came out of the experience with their eyes opened and wanting to make a difference to the suffering of asylum seekers and refugees. As always, well done to our students for their commitment, hard work and many successes during the last four months; it is expected and also greatly appreciated. I am constantly reminded of what a wonderful community this is, and of the tremendous achievements of all of our students. I hope and trust that all of you and your families enjoy a memorable and restful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Mr Ellery, Headteacher

CHRISTMAS BAKE OFF

After another successful Great UCC Bake Off we were delighted to see the winners produce some outstanding cakes on the theme of Christmas. The skills that our bakers have are fantastic, impressing our special guest judges from Bells of Lazonby. Each year our students impress us and this year is no different; the creativity, care and love shown over each cupcake is astounding. I feel we have our very own Mary Berry or Paul Hollingwood in our midst! It was a massive effort by all who took part in round one and the final, congratulations to them all! Nicola Swainson

ESCAPE TO SAFETY EXHIBITION We recently hosted the Escape to Safety multimedia exhibition which was based on the experiences of refugees and inspired the minds - young and old - of UCC.. Visitors came out of the experience with their eyes opened, having engaged with empathy and considered how fortunate they truly are with one girl claiming ‘it’s not fair what they go through.’ Now pupils want to make a difference to the suffering of asylum seekers and refugees. One Year 7 stated that he ‘didn’t realise how normal Syria had been before the war and how quickly it became destroyed’. We were pleased that this experience helped encourage open-mindedness at UCC. School leaders, positive and visible role models, mature, composed and good fun to be around; Kitty and Jake have taken the roles of head girl and head boy to a whole new level this year. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside them and I am continually impressed by their willingness and ability to respond calmly to any situation and the respect they command from their peers and teachers alike. I’m their biggest fan. Rob Jackson

National Poetry Day was yet again a massive hit with the Year 7 students; those that attended said that they had a great time, enjoying the many activities of the day. The poet Ashleigh Nugent was our special guest this year, providing workshops in the morning he also assisted the students in the afternoon with their own ‘Freedom’ poems ahead of the Poetry Rap Competition. A massive congratulations to all that took part in the Poetry Rap Competition and a big well done to the joint winners 7HJF and 7JN, not forgetting Bobby’s fantastic mic drop at the end of his performance! SCHOOL SHOW JUMPING COMPETITION

On Friday 24th November a team from UCC consisting of Jonny, Maisie, Mollie and Sian travelled to Blackdyke Farm Equestrian Centre to take part in the school’s Show Jumping Competition. The competition was well supported and closely fought, with over twelve teams taking part. UCC came a respectable eighth, carrying only 12 faults after the jump off. Well done to all the team members, especially those who were riding unfamiliar horses on the day - a fantastic effort! Mrs S Flatman

PRIZE DAY 2017 WITH OUR SPECIAL GUEST JOEY ESSEX Animated, dynamic and exhilarating are words often used to describe this year’s dazzling Prize Day, our sixth and most inspiring yet. Opening with a stunning Harry Potter themed film produced by the LRC, events included a superb Gymnastics display, an outstanding Music & Dance performance, a striking ‘group scripted’ Drama performance and an exhilarating exhibition by our National Champion Cheerleaders. All of this was set off beautifully with a large scale photographic display by students in the Art Department and an enthusiastic acknowledgement of the value of such an event by our audience. Joey Essex proved to be a cheerful and entertaining guest and our community, once again did UCC proud by sponsoring every one of the prizes. A brilliant day! Nigel Pattinson

FOOTBALL & NETBALL TRIP TO SPAIN UCC have returned from a successful netball & football tour to Salou, Spain. They experienced the different Spanish cultures & soaked up the sunshine. They visited the Nou Camp & Barcelona before spending the day at the theme park. The football team travelled to face Spanish opposition Kiko Casilla - a test against an accomplished passing team. Three fantastic goals & a well-taken free kick resulted in a great win in the flood lights. It was an undefeated tour for the boys who were also crowned tournament winners. They played in a fantastic location, Salou Soccer Stadium, used for international teams to train. The netball team spent a day being coached by super league coaches and the Zimbabwe international coach gaining valuable experience and an insight into the world of professional netball. They hoped to take the training into the tournament the next day, where they started against the well-organised Appleton School & won. This gave the girls the confidence to go on and play outstanding netball & they were overall tournament winners. All students were a credit to the school and behaved in a fantastic manner, they should be proud of themselves. Katie Armstrong
