WELCOME

TO UNIVERSITY OF THE INCARNATE WORD The Office of Financial Assistance will help you as you progress on your journey to becoming a UIW graduate! Our office is committed to helping you understand the services we provide, the financial options available to pay for school, and the academic requirements that must be met to remain eligible for financial aid. Our goal is to assist you so that your education at UIW is affordable, and to provide options that help you manage any financial barriers that you may encounter. A successful partnership will ensure that your aid is delivered timely, and that you are given every opportunity to receive the maximum amount of funding from scholarship, grant, work study and loan programs. Below is some essential information that will contribute directly to your success: Communication with Financial Aid • Our office will communicate requirements and next steps via your Cardinal email account, BannerWeb and your Award Letter. • Check your Cardinal email regularly as all service offices communicate pertinent information there. • We actively post updates regarding scholarships, events and deadlines on social media. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UIWFinancialAssitance and on Twitter and Instagram @UIWFinancialAid! Expectations of Students • The FAFSA application must be renewed annually. It becomes available October 1 for the next academic year. FAFSA results are analyzed to determine your award eligibility and are required to start the aid process. • Our office requires a timely response when requesting paperwork or additional information. • The ability to receive financial aid is directly tied to your academic performance, so you are expected to progress academically to remain eligible for aid at UIW. Satisfactory Academic Progress • Maintaining satisfactory academic progress ensures that you advance towards graduation in a timely manner, with the smallest cost and debt, before your aid is exhausted. • Federal and Institutional aid requires a cumulative 2.0 GPA each year and State (TEG) funding requires a cumulative 2.5 GPA for renewal eligibility. • All aid requires a completion rate of 75% of attempted coursework to remain eligible. • We encourage you to meet with our office to discuss the impact of dropping courses, changing majors and/or adding a minor prior to doing so. Our office is here to assist with any questions or concerns you have along the way! We are available by walk-in counseling Monday-Friday, by phone (210-829-6008) or by email (finaid@uiwtx.edu). More information about aid at UIW is always available online at https://www.uiw.edu/finaid. We look forward to working with you! UIW Office of Financial Assistance

YOUR AWARD LETTER The award letter details the financial aid UIW is offering you and your family for this academic year. Based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) determined by the FAFSA, your awards may include scholarships, grants, work study and/or loans. Please note that this offer could change if information on your FAFSA is corrected as part of a verification review, or if you receive additional funding, such as veteran’s assistance, tuition waivers, athletic funding or additional scholarships. You must determine the financial aid awards that you plan to accept or decline. This will help us track requirements you need to secure your funding. You will be notified if additional documents are necessary to finalize your awards.

COMMUNICATION The Office of Financial Assistance may request additional paperwork to complete your file and secure your awards. You will be able to receive correspondence from our office by: EMAIL UIW primarily communicates with students through email. Accordingly, all students are provided a university-specific email at the time of admission. Our office uses email to notify students about their awards, outstanding paperwork, scholarship opportunities and account updates. Check your Cardinal email regularly for correspondence from UIW administrative offices, faculty and advisors. CARDINAL APPS Cardinal Apps is available to all current and confirmed students. This allows BannerWeb access to view outstanding financial aid requirements, check your Cardinal email or view your bill. SOCIAL MEDIA You can follow the Office of Financial Assistance on multiple social media platforms for quick access to additional information and resources. COST OF ATTENDANCE Your cost of attendance is an estimate of your educational expenses for the year. This helps establish your financial need and allows you to apply for aid to cover your expenses. The cost of attendance includes direct costs as well as indirect costs. Students can use the Financial Planning Worksheet provided on the next page to determine direct costs for the year. Students may also need to budget for additional expenses, such as supplies, health insurance and off-campus housing. These items are not automatically charged but are factored in the overall cost of attendance. DIRECT COSTS Direct costs are items paid directly to UIW that may include tuition, fees, as well as room and board for those who choose to live on campus.

INDIRECT COSTS Indirect costs are items not paid directly to UIW that may include transportation, personal expenses and off-campus room and board.

PLANNING SHEET Use this worksheet to compare your total college costs to your financial aid awards. Refer to the 2022-2023 Tuition & Fees chart to estimate the annual costs versus the total aid listed on your award letter. This calculation will determine if your charges will be covered, or if you will need to seek additional resources. You will also want to account for other indirect expenses, such as books or off-campus housing. YOUR CALCULATIONS

SCHOLARSHIPS and GRANTS Scholarships and grants are forms of gift aid, which is funding that does not need to be repaid. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, performance in a specific activity (such as the fine arts), athletic performance, or on other criteria established by donors. Outside scholarships are usually awarded by private foundations, community foundations, philanthropists, unions, non-profit organizations and for-profit corporations. A list of current scholarship applications can be found at www.uiw.edu/finaid/scholarships.html. GRANTS Grants are need-based federal and state funds that do not have to be repaid. Funds are available to eligible students based on financial need and level of enrollment. Grants are allocated to colleges in yearly, limited amounts and are typically awarded to eligible students upon the completion of the FAFSA.

FEDERAL DIRECT LOANS Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Loans are offered to fill the gap between direct costs and gift aid. These loans are not credit-based and the amounts are based on grade level. Repayment begins six months after the student graduates or drops below half-time (six credit hours). SUBSIDIZED LOAN • Offered to undergraduate students with financial need, determined by FAFSA • Government pays interest while attending at least half-time or during deferment

UNSUBSIDIZED LOAN • Offered to undergraduate students; not required to demonstrate financial need • Accrues interest while attending school as well as during deferment

FEDERAL WORK STUDY Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study. Earnings will be paid directly to the student bi-weekly unless they request a direct deposit into a bank account or automatic payment toward educational expenses, such as tuition and fees. DETERMINE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR WORK-STUDY To qualify for work-study, students must file their FAFSA and demonstrate financial need. On the FAFSA, you must indicate that you are interested in being considered for work-study when asked. Students who don’t qualify for federal work-study may be hired by a department through student employment using University funds. HOW TO APPLY FOR A WORK-STUDY JOB A work-study award does not guarantee job placement. It is the student’s responsibility to apply for a position by visiting jobs.uiw.edu.
