2009 UIC SOCCER SCHEDULE ADMISSION TO UIC SOCCER HOME MATCHES
General admission individual game ticket prices for all UIC home regular season matches are $6.00 per ticket. * Children 3 and under are admitted free * UIC students are free with a valid UIC I-Card Tickets can be purchased at the Flames Field entry gates on the day of the game with cash only. Groups of 10 or more are $3.00 a ticket by calling the UIC Ticket Office in advance at (312) 413-8421. Group tickets must be ordered at least 24 hours before the scheduled game. All advance ticket orders through the UIC Ticket Office will include a $7.00 order-processing fee.
UIC ALL-SPORT TICKET
A UIC All-Sport Ticket, which provides one general admission ticket to all regular season home events during the 2009-2010 season for Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Swimming and Diving and Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, can be purchased for $25 through the UIC Ticket Office at (312) 413-UIC1 (8421). John Trask has taken the UIC men’s soccer program to new heights in his four seasons at the helm, using a proven formula for success that has helped every side he has ever been a part of maximize its potential and garner a long list of accolades and championships over the past decade. The standard of excellence associated with Trask’s formula has been on display throughout his first four seasons at the helm at UIC, with the Flames’ back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship Sweet 16 that included a historic run to the 2007 NCAA quarterfinals serving as the most recent examples of the program’s continuous rise to national prominence under his watch. Bringing a winning philosophy that garnered back-to-back NCAA titles and a trip to the Major League Soccer semifinals during his previous coaching stops, Trask has installed his successful style at UIC in such a short amount of time that the Flames were transformed from a five-win team the season before he arrived into a squad that stood just three matches away from college soccer’s ultimate prize a mere three years later. A glance at his work throughout the last 10 years shows that Trask has had an influential hand in some impressive team results. From coaching Indiana’s national championship squads in 1998 and 1999, to guiding the Miami Fusion to the 2000 U.S. Open Cup final and the 2001 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and to accumulating a long list of achievements for UIC, Trask’s track record speaks for itself.
Flames eliminated No. 12 Saint Louis at Hermann Stadium in a dramatic penaltykick shootout, defeated No. 16 Northwestern 2-0 on the Wildcats’ Lakeside Field and downed No. 7 Creighton by a 1-0 score at Morrison Stadium to come within one match of UIC’s first-ever College Cup berth. Along with the Flames’ first-ever appearance in the Round of Eight, the 2008 season was capped by the program’s highest end-of-the-year national rankings. College Soccer News ranked UIC ninth nationally in its final poll of the season, and the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 featured a season-ending ranking of No. 10 for the Flames. Midfielder Pavle Dundjer was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America Third Team, marking the second consecutive season that UIC featured an All-American player. Bubonja was also feted with a slew of postseason honors for his work between the posts, earning selections to the College Soccer News All-America Second Team, NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region First Team and All-Horizon League First Team while also receiving the UMBRO/Chicagoland Soccer News Men’s College Soccer Player of the Year and Soccer America Men’s Second Team MVP awards. Cesar Zambrano capped his college career in style in 2007. The midfielder was named the Horizon League Championship Most Valuable Player and received NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region honors before he was drafted by Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, giving Trask’s program an MLS pick for the second consecutive year after Tonci Skroce was taken by the Columbus Crew one year prior. UIC entered 2007 on the heels of a 2006 season that was one of the most successful in the history of the program. The Flames rattled off a nine-match unbeaten streak to open the campaign, notching road wins over nationally-ranked Saint Louis and eventual national champion UC Santa Barbara during that span. The Flames moved up the national polls, becoming a consensus Top 10 team for the first time and earning the team’s highestever national ranking during the week of September 25th, reaching the No. 6 spot in the SoccerTimes.com College Coaches Poll.
The Flames have been molded into a prime example of Trask’s victorious brand of soccer. UIC’s 8-2-1 record against Top 25 teams on the road since 2005 and numerous Top 10 national rankings of its own are just a few of the accomplishments that serve as evidence to his penchant for success. In 2008 UIC stayed in the four major national polls from start to finish, reaching as high as No. 4 in the country for the highest slot achieved by UIC in any Top 25 rankings. The Flames began the year on a school-record 12-match unbeaten streak, won the Horizon League regular season championship and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. UIC continued its recent success in the postseason by advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 for the second straight season in 2008, eliminating Dayton and No. 4 national seed Michigan State in a pair of dramatic penalty-kick sessions before falling just short of another quarterfinal appearance following an overtime loss at No. 15 seed North Carolina that saw the Flames without acclaimed goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, who was injured and unable to play against the Tar Heels. Bubonja, junior midfielder Baggio Husidic and sophomore back Robert Younger headlined the individual accolades for Trask’s side in 2008. Bubonja was a semifinalist for the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy awarded annually to the nation’s top college player, while third straight selections to the NSCAA/ adidas All-Great Lakes Region First Team and All-Horizon League First Team also highlighted Bubonja’s haul. Husidic was named the Horizon League Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year while garnering All-Great Lakes First Team honors, and Younger, the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, was picked to the All-Great Lakes Second Team. Bubonja and Husidic also earned NSCAA/adidas All-America First Team honors after the 2008 campaign, becoming the first First Team All-Americans in the program’s history. The 2007 Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament saw UIC advance past three nationally-ranked teams, doing so on the opponent’s home pitch each time. The

The Flames, who also achieved the No. 1 ranking in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region poll for the first time in school history, went on to finish 13-3-5 and finish atop the NCAA statistical rankings for team goals-against average (0.36) and team save percentage (.908). UIC’s 2006 GAA was the fourth-best mark in NCAA history, while the Flames’ save percentage that year stands as the bestever in Division I men’s soccer. UIC, which gave up just eight goals in 21 games and only two goals after intermission during the entire 2006 season, went on to earn the team’s first-ever at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. There UIC picked up a 3-0 win over Western Illinois in the first round before giving Elite Eight qualifier Notre Dame all it could handle on its home pitch in a narrow 1-0 loss to the Irish. The accolades poured in for the national noise made by the Flames. Skroce became the second All-American in program history after being selected to the NSCAA/adidas All-America Second Team for his seven-goal, seven-assist season. Four UIC players earned NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region accolades, while Skroce’s Horizon League Player of the Year award, Bubonja’s Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year award and six All-Horizon League Team honorees highlighted the haul. For guiding the Flames to national prominence in 2006, Trask was named the league’s Coach of the Year. The motto “defense wins championships” is one that Trask fully believes in, and it has proven to be the key to success for UIC. In 2006 the Flames set a new school record with 13 shutouts en route to the team’s first Horizon League regular season title since 2000. That record did not last long, as the 2007 UIC men’s soccer team

busted that mark with 14 clean sheets, including five shutouts in seven postseason matches, to win the school’s first league tournament title in seven years. Trask began to lay the foundation for success in 2005, when the first-year manager guided a team that went 5-12-2 in the fall prior to his arrival to a fantastic 10-5-2 campaign and the sixth-best turnaround in the nation. The Flames stepped up their level of play against top competition in their first season under Trask. UIC earned road victories over Top 25 teams Loyola Marymount and Creighton that season, along with a road draw against 2005 NCAA Tournament team Milwaukee. In addition, the Flames battled to a spring exhibition draw against 2005 NCAA quarterfinalist Akron and fought national power Indiana tooth-and-nail in a preseason road match.

Along with stellar showings against some of the nation’s best teams, UIC also proved to be a club with better preparation and fitness under Trask’s watch. The team’s 5-1-2 record in overtime matches during the 2005 season proves such a statement.

UIC’s success in 2005 brought in various individual awards and team recognition. Dundjer, Skroce and Zambrano were named to the 2005 All-Horizon League First Team, while Pawel Otachel earned Second Team honors. Dundjer also became the first UIC player since Joe Morelli in 2002 to earn NSCAA All-Midwest Region Team accolades. The Flames finished the year ranked ninth in the NSCAA/adidas Midwest Region Rankings, the first time UIC has been ranked in the final region poll since 2002, while also receiving votes in the national poll for the first time since 2001.

Not only has Trask improved UIC’s play on the field, he has already taken enormous steps in upgrading all facets of the program. Night games at Flames Field debuted in 2006 thanks to the installation of lights over the pitch. Theme nights, promotions and other additions to the operation of games at Flames Field have been implemented successfully, helping increase attendance by nearly 700%. Plans for a soccer-specific stadium and other improvements are in the works. The Flames have become more active in the community through Trask’s affiliation with the America SCORES program, an afterschool reading, writing and soccer program dedicated to inner-city children in 16 cities around the country. Trask has served as the lead clinician for the America SCORES Coaches Workshop at the UCLA campus the past three years. Trask, his staff and his players have proven to be a great resource for the America SCORES Chicago chapter with their volunteer involvement in clinics and camps, and Trask and the Flames teamed with Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire to play a charity friendly at Flames Field the past three years and raise over $19,800 for the organization.
Trask came to UIC with an impeccable soccer pedigree. An assistant at Indiana University for nearly a decade under legendary head coach Jerry Yeagley, Trask played a vital role in cultivating a Hoosier dynasty that claimed eight Big Ten titles, reached five College Cups and earned back-to-back National Championships (1998-1999) during his tenure from 1991 through 1999. Indiana amassed an unbelievable 16929-12 record during Trask’s nine seasons, including four 20-win campaigns. Not only did Trask play a vital role in the championship success of the team as a whole, he also assisted in the recruitment and development of the nation’s finest players. Under Trask, Hoosier players amassed five Big Ten Player of the Year awards, 18 All-America honors, 27 All-Region First Team accolades, and 64 All-Big Ten selections. Trask also guided midfielders Brian Maisonneuve and Todd Yeagley to national player of the year honors in 1994, with Maisonneuve earning the Hermann Trophy and Yeagley winning the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award. Along with Maisonneuve and Yeagley, Trask has had a hand in developing a slew of professionals, Olympians and World Cup players from the Indiana program. Dema Kovalenko, Yuri Lavrinenko, Lazo Alavanja and Pat Noonan are just a few of the former Hoosiers that have gone on to significant post-collegiate success on the soccer field following their tutelage under Trask. During his nine-year run at Indiana, Trask quickly made a name for himself in the national prep ranks, particularly in the Midwest. He served as the men’s state senior coach for the Indiana State Soccer Association from 1992-1995, followed by a five-year reign as the state director of coaching for the ISSA. He has worked extensively with United States Soccer Federation youth national teams in developing

professional and international players for the U.S. over the course of his coaching career, most recently serving on the staff for the U.S. U-18 team that competed at the prestigious Milk Cup in Northern Ireland during the summer of 2009. Trask also directed the Indiana Soccer Camp for 11 years and developed the famed John Trask Total Soccer series of camps, which he has brought to the UIC campus with a variety of spring and summer offerings for young players. After his successful apprenticeship at Indiana, Trask took his coaching skills to the professional level for five seasons as an assistant in Major League Soccer. Trask began his career in MLS with Miami in 2000, helping the Fusion earn the MLS Supporters’ Shield and a berth into the MLS semifinals in 2001 while serving on the Eastern Conference coaching staff for the 2001 MLS All-Star Game. He guided Alex Pineda Chacon to the league scoring title in 2001 en route to the MLS Honda Most Valuable Player award. Following his two seasons in Miami, Trask spent two years with D.C. United before heading to Dallas as an assistant for the Burn (now FC Dallas). While in Major League Soccer, Trask tutored some of the biggest names in the game. From popular veterans like Preki to young sensations such as U.S. National team member Eddie Johnson, Trask has trained a long list of professional talent from all across the globe. Prior to his coaching career, Trask excelled on the pitch for the Hoosiers as a midfielder. A four-year letterwinner at Indiana from 1984-1987, Trask played for the 1984 College Cup team and two NCAA regional finalists. UIC marks a homecoming of sorts for Trask. Raised in Milwaukee, Wis., Trask was actually born in Chicago and lived in the city for three years prior to moving up north. Trask graduated from Indiana with a bachelor of science degree in management from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1990. He also earned a master’s degree in kinesiology in 1993 while serving as a graduate assistant coach with the Hoosiers. Trask and his wife, Jela, were married in February 2008 and reside in the River North neighborhood in downtown Chicago. They recently welcomed a new addition to their family with the birth of their son, Jack, in 2009.

ASSISTANT COACH SEAN PHILLIPS FIFTH SEASON AT UIC INDIANA (1994)
One of the first moves that John Trask made when he was hired as UIC head coach was bringing Sean Phillips on board as his right-hand man. During his first four seasons as the top assistant coach, Phillips has made an immediate and enormous impact on a UIC program that is arriving on the national soccer scene. One need look no further than UIC’s back-to-back runs to the NCAA Sweet 16 the past two seasons to see the influence Phillips has had on the program. With plenty of postseason experience in hand from his days as a player and coach at Indiana University, Phillips helped guide the Flames past three nationally-ranked foes on the road and qualify for the Elite Eight for the first time in school history in 2007 and advance past fourth-seeded Michigan State to qualify for the 2008 Sweet 16. With a knack for teaching the art of goalkeeping, Phillips’ influence on the style of soccer the Flames play is easily detectable in the numbers. UIC has a team goals-against average of 0.44 and a total of 38 shutouts in the past three seasons, quickly branding the program as a national force on defense. But it is also his attention to detail and work ethic in various facets of the game which cannot be measured with numerical value that makes Phillips one of the top young coaches in the collegiate game today. College Soccer News recognized Phillips as one of the best assistant coaches in the country for his efforts in directing the Flames’ continuous rise into the national soccer consciousness. New single-season school and individual shutout records have been set under Phillips’ watch in each of the past two seasons. A total of 13 shutouts, fueled by 10 shutouts from goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, set a UIC record in 2006 until a new mark of 14 team clean sheets was set in 2007, with Bubonja shattering his previous best with 12 shutouts. Bubonja posted 10 shutouts during his unanimous First Team All-American campaign in 2008, a year in which the keeper was also a semifinalist for the prestigious Hermann Trophy for the best collegiate soccer player in the country. Like his extensive role in the Flames’ sterling 2007 campaign, Phillips played a tremendous part in UIC’s outstanding 2006 season. With a rookie netminder in Bubonja under Phillips’ guidance, UIC turned in one of the finest defensive years in NCAA history. The 2006 Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year, an All-Horizon League First Team selection and an NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region honoree, Bubonja allowed just eight goals in over 1,930 minutes between the posts to post a 0.37 goals-against average that ranked fourth overall in the country, while his save percentage of .905 ranked third in the nation. His play led UIC to turn in the nation’s best team goals-against average (0.36), which tied for the fourth-best mark all-time, and the best team save percentage (.908) in NCAA history. Those accolades were just the beginning for Bubonja, who earned a bevy of awards in 2007 while training under Phillips. Selection to the College Soccer News All-America Second Team, NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region First Team and All-Horizon League First Team and winning UMBRO/Chicagoland Soccer News Men’s College Soccer Player of the Year and Soccer America Men’s Second Team MVP awards have helped position Bubonja as one of the premier keepers in college soccer. In his first season at UIC Phillips helped second-year netminder Jeff Engelbrecht improve tremendously. Following a rookie season in which he went 4-9-2 and allowed 27 goals for a 1.81 GAA with no shutouts, Engelbrecht flourished

under Phillips’ tutelage by going 9-5-2, allowing 20 scores for a 1.19 GAA and five clean sheets. Improving the goalkeeping was just one of Phillips’ many major feats the last three years. His comprehensive role in training, scouting, game preparation and on-field coaching has led UIC to a 36-14-13 record, the school’s highest in-season and end-of-season national rankings and longest-ever stretch in the national polls, Horizon League regular season and tournament titles, and back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths that featured the 2007 Elite Eight run. A tireless worker, Phillips has also made a mark with his responsibilities in recruiting, game management, scheduling, marketing, media relations, and various other areas. He also serves as the point person for UIC soccer players for information on training, class scheduling, compliance and rules, financial aid guidance, housing assistance, and other important items. Prior to joining the UIC staff, Phillips served as an assistant coach with the Hoosiers for four seasons, helping Indiana earn two Big Ten titles and three trips to the NCAA College Cup while amassing a sparkling 68-19-4 record. In his final season in Bloomington, Phillips played a vital role in the Hoosiers’ National Championship campaign. Phillips’ main focus as an assistant coach revolved around the daily training of the squad’s goalkeepers. In 2004, Phillips’ goaltending charges posted a paltry 0.63 goals against average, good for seventh in the nation, along with 11 shutouts. Phillips worked closely in the development of NSCAA All-American keeper Jay Nolly, who has gone on to a professional career that includes stops with Real Salt Lake and D.C. United of Major League Soccer and Vancouver of the USL First Division. Outside of his primary duties with the IU goalkeepers, Phillips assisted with the training of field players, which included 2004 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner and Columbus Crew midfielder Danny O’Rourke and current FC Dallas and U.S. National Team defender Drew Moor, along with home game operations, recruiting, academics, media relations and compliance. A native of Dallas, Texas, Phillips holds numerous coaching licenses, including an NSCAA Premier Diploma with Distinction, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma with Distinction, and an NSCAA Goalkeeper Level III Diploma with Distinction. As a goalkeeper for Indiana from 1991-1994, Phillips made a pair of trips to the College Cup and helped the Hoosiers turn in a 73-15-7 mark. Phillips graduated from Indiana in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in public policy and went on to earn his master’s degree in sport management from Indiana in 2001.

Three-time All-American and former Major League Soccer star Sergi Daniv joins the Flames as an assistant coach this fall. Daniv was an All-American for Wake Forest University in 1995, 1996 and 1998 before pursuing a professional soccer career with a pair of MLS sides, the Dallas Burn and the Chicago Fire, from 1999-2004. “I would like to welcome Sergi Daniv to the staff here at UIC,” said Trask. “Sergi’s knowledge and background in the game will be something that adds to the quality of the program, and the players will be the beneficiaries of that knowledge. “To have a former professional and a three-time All-American on the staff will give insight to our players as to what is needed if they desire to play at the next level,” Trask said. “When I look at our staff for the 2009 season, I believe we have one of the best staffs in the country and I’m looking forward to working with this exceptional group of coaches.” Daniv was a youth international for the USSR. He was a member of the Olympic Reserve Academy, one of the top Ukrainian soccer academies, from 1989-91, and he was a U-14, U-15, and U-16 USSR National Soccer Team player before heading to Winston-Salem, N.C. to play for the Demon Deacons. In addition to his three All-America honors, Daniv was an All-ACC First Team pick in both 1996 and 1998 and an All-ACC Second Team selection as a freshman in 1995. He also garnered All-South Region accolades during those three seasons. He appeared in 45 matches for the Burn and the Fire from 1999 until 2004, making 37 starts along the way. Daniv helped the Burn advance to the 1999 MLS Western Conference Finals, a year in which he was a candidate for league Rookie of the Year honors, and had a 2001 campaign for the Fire in which he posted seven points in 14 matches. His post-playing career exploits have included conducting soccer camps and training for the Soccer Made in America (SMIA) organization from 2004-2005 and serving as a coach for the Chicago Blast club from 2005-2006. Daniv graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in analytical finance from Wake Forest and has a UEFA – A Coaching Diploma from the Football Federation of Ukraine.
In his third season with the UIC men’s soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach is one of the area’s most well-respected young coaches, Minos Vlamakis. Vlamakis has played a huge role with the Flames during the last two seasons, serving on the staff that directed back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 runs and an unprecedented Elite Eight run in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. With myriad duties in the program, Vlamakis plays a key part in the team’s preparation throughout the season. Vlamakis brings a wide array of award-winning experience that he has accumulated over a short period of time. His most recent endeavor includes serving as head coach of RWB Adria, one of the most decorated clubs in the state. Vlamakis maintained that tradition by leading RWB Adria to National Soccer League, Illinois State Cup, and Illinois Open Cup titles in his first year at the helm in 2006, garnering Illinois Soccer Team of the Year accolades. He has also guided the club to finals appearances in the Illinois Amateur Cup (2006, 2007) and the USASA National Open Cup (2007) and led the team to a Midwest Region II Open Cup championship in 2007 that qualified RWB Adria for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Vlamakis has also served as a coach for the Illinois State Select Team since 2004, taking the reigns as head coach in 2006-07. He led the team to four consecutive Midwest Region II Select Team titles and the USASA National Championship at the 2006-07 George F. Donnelly Cup. The 25-year old Elmwood Park native cut his teeth in the coaching ranks as assistant coach for the Assyrian Winged Bull club, where he previously played as a goalkeeper until a back injury took him out of action and guided him to a new calling. As both a player and coach Vlamakis helped Winged Bull to a bevy of state, regional and national titles. From 2005 until 2006 Vlamakis was also an assistant coach for Oakton Community College, where he coached a pair of NSCAA/adidas All-Americans and two regional semi-finalists. Vlamakis was named the 2006 National Soccer League Coach of the Year, the 2006 Illinois State Soccer Association Coach of the Year, and the 2006-07 Midwest Region II Coach of the Year. In January 2006 Vlamakis was named to the Executive Board of the Illinois State Soccer Association, becoming the youngest member of the board in the history of the ISSA at age 24. He has also served as an Executive Administrator for the National Soccer League since 2001 and has been a USSF referee since 2000. A graduate of Loyola, Vlamakis currently resides in Chicago.

DAN SIMEK
Dan Simek, a four-year letterwinner for the Flames from 2005-2008, returns to UIC as an undergraduate assistant coach for the 2009 campaign. Simek, a member of the first recruiting class of the John Trask era, appeared in 53 matches during his UIC career. He totaled five goals and three assists during his tenure with the Flames and was a part of three NCAA Tournament runs, including UIC’s memorable Elite Eight journey in 2007, in addition to two Horizon League regular season champions and the 2007 Horizon League tournament champions. A native of LaGrange, Ill. and a graduate of Lyons Township High School, Simek played at the club level for Sockers FC Chicago.
ROSS CAIN
Ross Cain enters his eighth year with the UIC soccer program and third season as the team’s director of soccer operations. Cain has been on the staff since 2006 after completing an outstanding four-year playing career at UIC in 2005. He served as the Flames’ undergraduate assistant coach for the 2006 NCAA Tournament squad before taking his current position as director of soccer operations and contributing to UIC’s 2007 NCAA Elite Eight and 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 runs. Cain started 37 games between the posts for the Flames, finishing his career with a record of 19-13-2 to go with 194 saves and a career goals-against average of 1.64. He earned Horizon League All-Newcomer Team honors after starting 18 games in goal as a rookie in 2002, tying a UIC single-season record with six clean sheets. In 2003 the Rochester, Minn., native ranked first in the Horizon League in saves with 97 stops, also topping the conference rankings in save percentage (.815) while averaging nearly six saves a match. Cain’s 97 saves also ranked 14th in the entire nation. In addition to his responsibilities at UIC, Cain has made a name for himself in the local club soccer scene. He is currently the Director of Coaching for Chicago United FC.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH
NICK ZOSTAUTAS
Nick Zostautas is in his second season as UIC’s head strength and conditioning coach. Zostautas took over the strength and conditioning program at UIC after six seasons as Northwestern’s assistant strength and conditioning coach. During his team in Evanston, Zostautas worked with a variety of Wildcat teams, including the football program. He also trained Northwestern’s NCAA Tournament-qualifying men’s soccer and wrestling squads. Prior to Northwestern, Zostautas worked as an assistant strength coach at North Dakota, where he helped the Fighting Sioux football team win the 2001 NCAA Division II national championship. From January through May of 2001, Zostautas assisted Paul Goldberg, the head strength coach of the Colorado Avalanche, which won the Stanley Cup in 2001. Zostautas began his career as a strength coach at Northwestern in the summer of 2000 as an intern. Zostautas is an accomplished powerlifting competitor, winning the 2003 Colorado State Strongman championship while setting the state record in the Rams’ head carry. For his efforts, Zostautas qualified for the powerlifting amateur national championships. Zostautas graduated from Colorado State in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science before earning a master’s degree in kinesiology from North Dakota in 2003. While at Colorado State, Zostautas was a member of the football team from 1996-97. He also was a hammer thrower and competed in the shot put as a member of the track and field team from 1997-2001. Zostautas is certified by the National Strength & Conditioning Association, and is a certified Sport Performance Coach from USAW. He also is a member of the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association.

Lending a helping hand to the UIC soccer team is director of compliance Molly Sullivan.
Schluckbier comes to UIC after serving as an athletic trainer at Loyola since 2005. There she worked with the men’s soccer, softball and women’s volleyball teams for the Ramblers. Her athletic training career began while she was an undergraduate student at Western Michigan, where she served as a student athletic trainer from 2001-2005. Schluckbier worked with a variety of Bronco teams, including the men’s soccer, baseball, football, women’s indoor track and women’s volleyball squads. She also spent the spring of 2005 as a student athletic trainer for Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich., working with the men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball teams there. Schluckbier graduated from Western Michigan with a bachelor of science in athletic training in 2005. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at UIC. Schluckbier, who currently resides in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood, is a certified athletic trainer with an Illinois license and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She is also certified in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with the American Red Cross.

Sullivan is in her second year as UIC’s director of compliance after serving as the compliance coordinator at Fordham University in New York
Prior to her stint at Fordham, Sullivan spent four years at UIC, including the 200506 and 2006-07 academic years as the school’s NCAA eligibility coordinator and an academic advisor for student-athletes. A 2002 graduate of Butler University, Sullivan came to UIC as an assistant ticket manager before working her way up to becoming an assistant in the athletic department’s compliance and academic services office. Sullivan, who earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in instructional leadership from UIC in 2005, started her career in athletic administration as an intern for the Horizon League. The former Molly Stearns married Shawn Sullivan in July 2009. The Sullivans reside in Chicago.
ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
ERIC PHILLIPS
Serving the UIC soccer program in a variety of capacities is associate athletic director Eric Phillips. Phillips enters his sixth year on the executive staff at UIC, including his second as the associate athletic director for internal affairs, and his second year as the liaison for the soccer program. As the soccer liaison, Phillips assists the program in numerous areas, including budget planning, competition and practice schedules, facility issues, compliance, academics and many other facets of the program. Phillips became an associate athletic director last year after serving the previous four years as the assistant athletic director for finance. In his role as assistant athletic director, Phillips was responsible for maintaining organized functional operation of all financial transactions within the UIC athletic department. He coordinated travel arrangements and purchases for the entire athletic department and is a member of the Student Fee Advisory Committee and the Travel Advisory Group. Prior to returning to UIC in 2004, Phillips spent six seasons with the Chicago White Sox as the coordinator of media relations. From 1998 through 2004, Phillips served as the team representative for the Sox and coordinated interview requests for players and staff on the national and local levels. Phillips has also worked in a variety of local and national media venues, with experience at ESPN television in Bristol, Conn., WSCR “The Score” sports radio, and WMAQ and WVAZ radio. From 1991-95, Phillips served as an assistant coach for the UIC women’s basketball team. He was responsible for recruiting and scouting for the Flames. Phillips earned two degrees from UIC, a bachelor of arts in communications and a master of science in sports administration. He and his wife, Lynette, have two children, Ethan and Lauren, and reside in Lockport, Ill.

DENNY WILLS
Serving the UIC soccer program in a variety of capacities is Denny Wills, special assistant to UIC Athletics. Wills has worked for the UIC Athletic Department for the past 22 years in numerous roles. As the special assistant to UIC Athletics, Wills helps the UIC men’s soccer team and all Flames programs in various ways. Wills is also spearheading UIC’s NCAA recertification, a process that all Division I schools must undergo very 10 years. He also currently serves as the liaison to the volleyball and softball teams.
He came to UIC to serve on UIC Athletics Hall of Famer Bob Hallberg’s staff as an assistant men’s basketball coach in 1987, helping the Flames amass 134 victories in nine seasons and recruiting and coaching the likes of all-time greats such as Kenny Williams, Mark Miller and Sherell Ford, the only NBA Draft first-round selection in school history. Prior to 2008, Wills was UIC’s associate athletic director for academic services and compliance and served as the UIC soccer team’s liaision. Wills directed the athletic department’s academic services since 1996. Wills is a 1975 graduate of Saint Xavier, where he was a four-year letterman on the basketball team. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in history, Wills also has a master’s degree in educational administration from Saint Xavier, as well as a master’s degree in physical education from Chicago State University. Wills and his wife, Casey, live in Oak Lawn. They have two sons, Denny and Dave.

UIC SOCCER - A PART OF THE COMMUNITY The effort that the UIC men’s soccer team exhibits on the field is mirrored by the Flames’ commitment to the community. Since John Trask’s arrival, the Flames have hosted charity matches against Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire at Flames Field over the past three years that have raised over $19,800 for non-profit organizations. The UIC men’s soccer program has cultivated a relationship with America SCORES Chicago, an after-school youth development program that empowers Chicago Public Schools students in the North Lawndale and Little Village communities near the UIC campus by implementing activities that emphasize soccer, writing, creative expression and service learning. The UIC men’s soccer team also supports the annual America SCORES Chicago Corporate Cup, providing use of the athletic complex for the event that raises money to support local students. Trask also serves as the lead clinician for the annual America SCORES Coaches Workshop. For Trask’s efforts with the organization, he was presented with the Calliope Award by America SCORES Chicago in recognition of his service as a role model in the community. Members of the UIC men’s soccer program constantly volunteer time and expertise to conduct local clinics year-round. Most recently members of the team were on hand to demonstrate their soccer skills with other UIC student-athletes at the Taste Sports Pavilion at the Taste of Chicago. In addition to their charitable efforts, the Flames have used a grass-roots approach to making UIC soccer matches a fun environment for all fans. Student promotions, neighborhood events, in-game giveaways and post-match autograph sessions are just some of the ways that UIC men’s soccer brings the game to the fans.

UIC CAMPUS HOUSING IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL With 10 residence halls scattered throughout the entire UIC campus community, campus housing is a university entity on the rise.

Housing nearly 4,000 students, the residences available are situated on some of the finest real estate in Chicago. Minutes from downtown, Lake Michigan and the museum campus, the dormitories at UIC are a refreshing concept from the traditional highrise facilities developed at many institutions. James J. Stukel Towers is the latest crown jewel in campus housing and opened its doors in the Fall of 2007. The Towers provide four towers of different heights to accommodate 740 undergraduate students. Each floor in the building has 30 residents, living in four-, five-, and eight-person suites consisting of single rooms, double rooms, bathrooms & living rooms. Half of the students living in the Towers will have single rooms.

The strong community development residence life model is intended to provide coordination and support for a number of academic-related programs and living areas, with each two-floor community having a two-story common-area lounge and adjacent study lounge, and each of the Towers offering a penthouse lounge/piano room. The building also provides a full-service dining hall for residents, a snack bar/convenience store, student kitchens in common areas, computer labs, meeting & seminar rooms, student organization offices, and a 150-seat auditorium for special events.

Stukel Towers is just one of many new residence facilities to open on the UIC campus in the last five years. A component of the university’s south campus expansion, Marie Robinson and Thomas Beckham Halls opened in 2003. The units house more than 750 students who inhabit spacious, apartment-style dorms, equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms. Across the east campus at the corner of Harrison and Halsted Streets is the Courtyard Residence Hall, along with Commons West, North and South. Built in 1988, these four halls house nearly 1,300 students. The Courtyard houses students in clusters, typically three doubles and two single rooms sharing a common bathroom, while the remainder of the halls offer a variety of living options. Every hall has a variety of lounges, meeting rooms, laundry facilities and spots for social and recreational activities. The convenient link to the campus unions allows for easy access to dining halls, bookstores and more.

PORT ACADEMIC CENTER A “HOME BASE” FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Time management is very important for a student-athlete. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, we recognize the unique demands of pursuing an academic degree and competing at the NCAA Division I level. Therefore, we offer the student-athlete a full-scale academic support program. At the heart of this program is the Port Academic Center. The Port Academic Center is a great support service provided by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to help a student-athlete excel in the classroom and attain a bachelor’s degree or other advanced degree. Services available within the center include advising, tutoring, scheduling assistance, eligibility monitoring, scholarship support and optional accommodations for individual and group study. The Port Academic Center is conveniently located on the lower level of the Physical Education Building. The 5,000-square foot facility serves as headquarters for the academic support staff and features a large public area for individual study, three smaller rooms for tutoring or group study, personal computer workstations linked to laser jet printers, a conference room, a reception area and private offices for counseling sessions. The Port Academic Center, with all of its resources, helps UIC meet the challenge of tightened NCAA academic requirements, providing a “home base” for the academic life of its student-athletes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who is my college advisor? Students are provided with a list of advisors and their phone numbers to assist them in easily finding their advisor. What is the academic reputation of UIC in the job world? Academically, it is a Big Ten degree and on par with any of the top schools. How will my major help me get a job? Current information is provided to students on this matter. Students are then referred to the career placement office, which will answer any questions they might have regarding a particular career. What do I do if I have a question about eligibility? A one-on-one conference is initiated to go over questions regarding changing major, course selection and any other academic problems a student might have regarding effects on their eligibility.
PORT ACADEMIC CENTER SERVICES Individual Study The spacious and comfortable main study area is monitored from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday though Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Students can focus on their schoolwork without distractions of home or dorm life. Computers are available for student-athletes to use in the main study area. Tutoring Tutoring is available to student-athletes in nearly every subject area. The Athletic Department has an exceptionally qualified staff of tutors. Sessions are scheduled during convenient hours for the student and the tutor, and are held in the Center’s small study rooms. Study Groups Student-athletes who wish to study together can reserve the small study rooms by checking with the receptionist outside the main study area. Advising Each student-athlete is required to meet with an academic advisor once each semester. In addition, advisors are available year-round to assist students with specific questions. Athletic Department advisors give special attention to NCAA degree and eligibility requirements when assisting student-athletes. Scheduling Assistance Center advisors have established relationships with faculty in many colleges and can intervene on the student’s behalf when scheduling problems arise. Scholarship Support A $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a studentathlete who has utilized the Center to significantly improve academic performance over the past year. Funding for this award is provided by the Port Endowment for Academic Excellence.

FLAMES ATHLETIC CENTER Christened on June 10, 1999, the Flames Athletic Center is the crown jewel in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s effort to bring its 18 Divison I men’s and women’s programs to national prominence. The $9.25-million, 50,000-square-foot venue is a state-of-the-art practice facility and features two NCAA regulation-sized basketball courts; a two-story comprehensive weight training and cardio-fitness center; an in-house sports medicine facility; locker rooms for student-athletes, with two just for men’s and women’s basketball; as well as offices for the basketball, and athletic administration staff. Several individuals provided leadership to the center through their generous gifts, and each was recognized with selected facilities in the new center being named in their honor. Among those are Pat and Peggy Colvin, whose funding established The Colvin Communication and Administration Center; Arnold J. Hartoch, who helped fund the Arnold J. Hartoch Baseball Suite; William and Cathy Merchantz, whose gift funded the Lambert Basketball Center; and Sidney L. Port, whose contributions set up the Port Hall of Excellence.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - JIM SCHMIDT The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has seen unprecedented growth and reached new heights both on the playing field and in the classroom under the leadership of Jim Schmidt. Named UIC’s fourth director of athletics on January 24, 1997, Schmidt quickly put together a department that could compete on a championship level, not only within the Horizon League, but on regional and national scenes as well. In Schmidt’s first 12 years, the Flames have captured more league titles than in the prior 15 years of NCAA Division I competition combined. Most recently, UIC garnered its second James J. McCafferty Trophy in 2006-07, the award honoring the most successful all-around athletic program in the Horizon League each season, and earned the league’s Men’s All-Sports Trophy just last year. Schmidt has also watched 42 of his teams represent UIC in NCAA postseason competition during his tenure. Among those NCAA tournament appearances were first-ever bids for men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and baseball. New history has been made each season under Schmidt, with the past year being no different. Highlighting the 2008–09 season were many memorable moments: • The UIC men’s soccer team won the Horizon League regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Flames achieved a national ranking as high as fourth in the country in 2008 and featured the program’s first-ever First Team All-Americans in goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy recognizing the nation’s best college soccer player, and Baggio Husidic, a Major League Soccer draft pick of the Chicago Fire in 2009. • The UIC women’s tennis team continued to dominate the Horizon League, capturing its 13th consecutive league title and making its 11th straight NCAA Tournament appearance while running its unbeaten streak against league foes to 113 and counting. The men’s tennis team once again found itself on the brink of a title, taking runner-up honors in the Horizon League for the fifth straight season. • The UIC men’s swimming and diving team won its first-ever Horizon League Championship under the guidance of Paul Moniak, who was named the Horizon League’s Coach of the Year. • The UIC men’s gymnastics team claimed its second all-time Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the National Men’s Gymnastics Championship meet for the first time since 2004. • The UIC baseball team won its eighth straight Horizon League regular season title and came within one out of securing its third straight Horizon League tournament championship and fifth NCAA berth in the last seven years. • Under first-year head coach and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Venturella and led by Horizon League Player of the Year Sarah Clynes, the UIC softball team won the Horizon League regular season championship and advanced to the Horizon League title game for the first time since 2005. • The UIC men’s basketball team, led by NABC All-District Team guard Josh Mayo and three-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection Scott VanderMeer, secured marquee road victories over Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt and Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Georgia Tech. “At UIC, we are committed to excellence, both academically and athletically,” Schmidt said. “We will create an atmosphere that will assist each student in attaining lifelong experiences that will help them be successful.” In keeping with that commitment, UIC has continued to enhance the academic performance of its studentathletes under Schmidt. Last season, UIC student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of 2.91, the second-highest overall semester GPA in the department’s history, with 121 reaching a 3.0 GPA or higher and 14 garnering a perfect 4.0 GPA. NCAA graduation reports list UIC Athletics’ graduation rates at 86% for all athletes who exhaust their eligibility. Under Schmidt’s direction in 1994, UIC Athletics instituted a Life Skills program designed to enhance the total student-athlete, with activities designed to improve personal, social and career development. Team builders, community service projects and leadership opportunities through the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were also implemented. Schmidt has also played a key role in the local and national exposure of UIC Athletics. He helped expand radio coverage of UIC by reporters on ESPN Radio, WSCR, WGN, WBBM and other radio stations while increasing television exposure on ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and other local and national outlets. With a strong desire to win conference titles and earn regular appearances in NCAA postseason action, Schmidt has brought numerous conference championships to the UIC campus to aid in the task. For the first time ever, the Flames hosted the league’s men’s basketball championship in 1999 and 2000. UIC has also hosted conference tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, women’s basketball, and swimming and diving, while the school also welcomed the NCAA softball regional championships to its
field in 1999 and the NCAA softball super regional championships in 2005. An NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round match was also played at Flames Field for the first time in the fall of 2006 and again in 2008. Flames administrative long-term plans are aggressive as well. In addition to major projects such as the first phase of the “Campaign for Athletics” that was implemented and the Flames Athletic Center fundraising campaign that was completed under Schmidt, UIC’s overall strategic plan outlines detailed improvements for scholarship funding; renovations to facilities, including the aquatics center; and improvements to indoor competition/ practice facilities for baseball, softball, track, tennis and volleyball. Construction of the stadium portion of the baseball and softball complexes and renovations to the soccer field are also high on the capital program’s list of improvements. While serving as associate athletic director, Schmidt helped develop a broad-based athletic program headed by strong men’s and women’s basketball programs and rapidly improving, nationally competitive Olympic sports teams. He also saw UIC’s student-athletes gain national recognition for top academic achievements while the teams and coaches earned regional and national exposure through conference championships and NCAA postseason competition. Schmidt assisted during the many historical decisions that took place over the last several years, including changes in conference affiliation leading up to UIC’s current membership in the Horizon League. Schmidt recently finished up a term as chair of the league’s men’s basketball committee. He had previously served as the chair of the television and finance committees. Schmidt has also served on the championships/facilities committee, equity committee and executive council. Schmidt began his collegiate athletics career in the fall of 1980, serving one year as the pitching coach at Western Illinois University while earning his master’s degree in sports administration. Arriving at UIC in 1982, Schmidt served as a pitching coach on the Flames’ baseball staff before being named an assistant to the athletic director in charge of marketing/promotions and daily operations. From 1983–86, Schmidt handled all sports information duties as an assistant athletic director and assumed the title of associate athletic director in 1987. A 1979 graduate of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Schmidt and his wife, Mary, reside in Naperville, Ill., with their two children, Billy and Eva.
