Japan plays a very significant role in the contemporary world, yet it is still seen by many as an unknown and mysterious culture. This specialised short course is one of a kind and will allow students to explore the latest approaches to Japanese Studies. The programme will be delivered by our specialised Centre for Japanese Studies (CJS) and will focus on stimulating discussion with speakers who are leading researchers in the field of Japanese Studies and enhancing students’ passion about this exciting topic. The course is suited to those currently at university who are interested in Japan, East Asia and the latest approaches to Japanese Studies, and draws upon the Centre’s dedication to producing excellent interdisciplinary research on Japan. It will provide an introduction to generating a deeper understanding of the past, present and future of Japan.

Japan Orientation: An Introduction to the Study of Japan and its Place in the World is one of the accredited modules within the University’s four-week International Summer School. Students benefit from more than 40 contact hours whilst also participating in an integrated programme of social activities with students from around the world.

The programme will be taught mainly at the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures (SISJAC) in Norwich city centre

Our 2016 fees are inclusive of: - Return airport transfers from London Heathrow at 3pm on 25 June; return transfer at 8am on 22 July - Induction and orientation programme - Social activities - Finale celebrations including gala dinner and karaoke - Assessment and Study Skills workshop and guided self-study support sessions - Four weeks’ on-campus private en-suite accommodation in a shared flat - Tuition, fieldtrips, tutorials, assessment, transcript and certificate of attendance

Scholarships and Discounts The programme is supported by the Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), a non-profit, grant making organisation dedicated to promoting an understanding of Japan through international exchanges while contributing to local and global community development. We are pleased to be offering some TIFO funded scholarships to applicants from the Visegrad Group (V4) countries Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures is also funding scholarships for UK/EU citizens from outside of the V4 countries.

Imagine waking up in the beautiful countryside just minutes from a world-class city which provides students with the best of both historical and modern worlds. Our campus has a great community atmosphere with shops, cafes, accommodation and teaching rooms all a short walk from each other. With our world class Sportspark, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and all of the facilities you would expect from an international university located on campus and the city of Norwich a short journey away, students find themselves in the ideal location for summer study. Together with other International Summer School students all students will live in our contemporary, private en-suite accommodation in the centre of campus. Each private bedroom has plenty of storage space, a single bed, study desk, wireless internet access and a walk-in shower room equipped with shower, toilet and sink. Rooms are provided with a flat sheet, duvet and cover, pillow and cover, and a towel; with access to extras as required. The accommodation is clean and light, and offers more than enough space for comfortable living.

The programme will be taught throughout in English, and students will receive guidance in academic, issuebased writing in the English language. The programme also offers guided self-study support sessions, along with an assessment and study skills workshop

Students will share central kitchen/dining area equipped with refrigerator, freezer and oven or microwave, basic cooking equipment, cutlery and crockery, and chairs, to enjoy home-cooked meals together.

Rail, bus and air links to the city allow students to make the most of their summer study period. Less than two hours by direct train to London or 90 minutes to London Stansted Airport means that Norwich is ideally located for students travelling from Europe. The city also boasts an international airport with daily connections to and from Amsterdam which makes international travel easy.

To help students make the most of their time in England we have organised an inclusive social programme designed to help meet new friends and explore the wider region. Two exciting weekend trips are also on offer for an additional fee for students who want to explore more of the UK. These trips will visit Stonehenge, Bath and Oxford or London and Cambridge. Advanced reading and an academic timetable will be provided in advance. In addition to submitting an online application form, applicants applying for a scholarship are required to submit a short statement outlining their interest in Japan and the programme.
