University of Delaware's athletic teams have one of the most unique nicknames in all of college athletics – "The Fightin' Blue Hens." It is a name they carry with pride that stretches back over 200 years of history of the state of Delaware. The Blue Hen nickname has been continuously used by all University of Delaware intercollegiate teams since 1911. On December 9, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved that a military battalion was to be raised from the lower three counties along the Delaware River. Thus was born the Delaware Regiment, a group of eight companies representing New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. The second company was composed of men from Kent County and was under the command of Captain John Caldwell, an avid fan and owner of gamecocks. The militia often amused itself by staging cock fights with these birds which were of a breed known as the Kent County Blue Hen, having some blue plumage. The renown of these chickens spread rapidly during that time when cock fighting was a popular formof amusement, and the "Blue Hens' Chickens" quickly developed a reputation for ferocity and fighting success. Captain Caldwell's company likewise acquired a considerable reputation for its own fighting prowess in engagements with the British at Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton, and was soon known as "the Blue Hen Chicken" company. One version of the story states that Caldwell's company rushed into battle screaming "We're sons of the Blue Hen and we're game to the end!" Captain Caldwell's company was part of Col. John Haslet's first Delaware regiment that formed near the outset of the Revolution in January, 1776, and in August, 1781, remnants of the regiment were still battling at Eutaw Springs, SC. Although often referred to as "The Fighting Delawares," Haslet's regiment also won the sobriquet, "The Blue Hen Chickens," which has become the nickname for all Delawareans. The name was formally adopted by the Delaware General Assembly in April, 1939 when the "Blue Hen Chicken" was named the official state bird. UD’s College of Agricultural Sciences maintains a breeding group of the Blue Hen Chicken on its campus farm.

LAURA TRAVIS HEAD COACH
20th Season • 208-157 • Delaware ‘89 • Delaware ‘98 record 42-match win streak which tied the longest win streak by any women’s athletic team in UD history.
Laura Travis will begin her 21st season as head coach of the University of Delaware women’s tennis team and 20th season as men’s tennis head coach during the 2012-13 campaign. Travis, the former Laura LeRoy, has enjoyed nothing but success with both teams since taking over the the women’s reigns from B.J. Ferguson in 1992-93 and the men’s head position from UD Hall of Fame member Roy Rylander in 1993-94. She served as Rylander’s assistant coach in 1992-93. Her Delaware men’s teams have won at least 10 matches in all but four seasons and her overall record is 208-157 (.570), including a 15-5 record in 1996-97 when the Blue Hens captured the America East title. The win marked just the second conference title in school history and the first since 1974. She also led the Blue Hens to a second place finish in 1995-96 and semifinal appearances in 1995, 1998, and 1999. Travis was named America East Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year twice, in 1996, and 1997. On the women’s side, Travis has led the Blue Hens to a 20-year record of 237-119 (.666) which includes establishing school records for wins in three different seasons when the Hens posted marks of 17-0, 17-1, and 17-9. She led the Blue Hens to eight straight America East Tournament second place finishes in 1994-2001 and was the league Coach of the Year in 1994-95, 1995-96, and 1999-2000. Most recently, Travis has led the Blue Hens to eight consecutive 10-plus win seasons. Her 1996-97 team went undefeated with a 17-0 mark and her 1997-98 squad completed a school

Prior to returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach, Travis served as head coach for boy’s and girl’s tennis at nearby A.I. duPont High School. Travis, the first woman to coach a men’s team at the University of Delaware, has been named conference Coach of the Year five times, twice in men’s and three times in women’s tennis. In 1995, she was named the United States Professional Tennis Association Middle Atlantic Division Women’s College Coach of the Year. In addition, she was the USPTA Women’s Open Player of the Year in 1995 and the USPTA Rookie of the Year in 1994. A 1989 University of Delaware honors graduate in physical education, Travis was one of the all-time great tennis players in Blue Hen history during her career in 1985-89. A native of Wilmington, Del. and an All-State player at Tower Hill School, she was a four-time East Coast Conference champion in singles and doubles and led the Blue Hens to East Coast Conference team titles in 1987 and 1988. She was voted team Most Valuable Player all four years. She was inducted into the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame in November, 2001. While at Delaware, she set school records for singles wins in a season (22 in 1988-89) and a career (73-12) and doubles wins in a career (269 with Christie Ellis). She was the 1988-89 ECC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis and was a CoSIDA/GTE District II All-Academic second team selection. In December, 2003, Travis was named the national winner of the United States Tennis Association and International Tennis Association Campus Recreation Award on December 3. She has been instrumental in the implementation of several pro-
grams geared to increasing tennis participation on the Delaware campus. Over the last six years, she has implemented USA Tennis Free for All, USA Tennis 1-2-3 and USA Team tennis programs on her campus. All these programs are related to the USA Tennis Program Pathway, which stresses “trying, learning, playing and competing” aspects of picking up and playing a sport. Travis earned her masters degree in physical education and sports psychology from Delaware in 1998. She and her husband Gerry, reside in Newark with their daughters, Brooke and Chase.

VINCE MAXIMO ASSISTANT COACH Fourth Season • Washington (Md.) ‘90
Vince Maximo will begin his fourth season as assistant coach for the University of Delaware women and men’s tennis teams in 2012-13. A 1990 graduate of Washington (Md.) College, Maximo earned a degree in business management and was a three-year member of the men’s tennis team, 1987-1989. Posting a 71-16 team record during his years, he helped the Shoremen to three Middle Atlantic Conference championships, while WC ranked third in 1987 and fourth in 1988 and 1989 after the NCAA Division III National Tournament. During his college years, Maximo worked as an instructor for Ocean Pines Tennis Association and the Shoremen tennis camp. He has also played in invitational sectional championships for Middle States USTA and national championships for World Team Tennis. Maximo, who holds over 20 years of experience in the banking industry, has held various leadership positions at Bank of America/MBNA America, and most recently served as a Senior Vice President in the card marketing division at Bank of America. Currently, Maximo serves as a Tech Project Solutions Consultant, specializing in project management, technical development management, and project deployment. Maximo resides in Wilmington, Del. with his wife, Julia, and their two English chocolate labradors.

AUSTIN LONGACRE ASSISTANT COACH First Season • Delaware ‘10 He earned Second Team All-CAA singles and Third Team All-CAA doubles accolades for both seasons.
One of the most decorated players in University of Delaware men’s tennis history, Austin Longacre returns to the Blue Hens for the 201213 campaign as his first season as an assistant coach. Delaware head coach Laura Travis, now in her 21st season with the Blue Hens and also a UD alumnus, regarded Longacre as one of the most accomplished Delaware tennis graduates. She continued, “Austin’s on-court record speaks for itself, but more importantly, he shares our team values and our vision to move the Delaware tennis programs forward.” Longacre was a four-year letter winner for Delaware and is the all-time singles career wins leader with a record of 70-38, all in the number one slot. Additionally, he posted a doubles record of 56-41, also all in the first flight. A three-time UD Alumni Association/Alexander J. Taylor Team Most Valuable Player, Longacre garnered First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association Doubles and Second Team All-CAA Singles honors as a senior. He finished the season with a singles record of 18-8 in the top spot while going 16-10 in doubles action. During his junior season, Longacre scored a singles record of 20-5, good for third all-time to sit third on the all-time most wins list.
Off the court, Longacre was the Vice President of the Delaware Christian Athletes, where he organized recreational-based events such as dodgeball and ultimate Frisbee tournaments in addition to bowling nights. Furthermore, he arranged service projects like Jesus Justice and the Poor and a rebuilding service project in Philadelphia. As Vice President, Longacre also budgeted and allocated funding for all service projects and retreats. Longacre also interned with the University of Delaware Chief Financial Officer’s office and Global Refuge Internaional. Additionally, he spent eight years as an assistant tennis professional with Better Tennis LLC in Elkton, Md. Longacre graduated in 2010 from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s of science degree in finance. Following graduation, Longacre furthered his education by receiving a master’s in business administration from Palm Beach Atlantic University, where he also served two seasons as an assistant tennis coach. The Orange, Texas native began playing tennis at the age of nine and is the son of Audy and Debbie Longacre, both University of Delaware graduates. Longacre was a four-year tennis standout at Avon Grove High School and won the Pennsylvania singles state championship in 2006.
Longacre put up a school-record 22 singles wins while playing in a school-best 33 matches played as a sophomore.

SAMANTHA CARNALL ASSISTANT COACH First Season • Delaware ‘12
Fresh off of an illustrious career for the University of Delaware women’s tennis team, Samantha Carnall is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Blue Hens in 2012-13. Delaware head coach Laura Travis, now in her 20th season with the Hens, and also a UD alumnus, considers Carnall as one of the best players in Delaware history and is excited about her return to the squad. She continued,” We are thrilled to have Samantha join our coaching staff. Her on-court record speaks for its itself, but more importantly, she shares our team values and vision to move the program forward.” Carnall was a four-year letter-winner for the Blue Hens and has set multiple school records. She holds the all-time career singles wins mark with a 91-28 record (.765) in addition to the all-time career doubles wins record at 85-31 (.733). During the 2009-10 season, Carnall broke the school record for singles wins with 30. During the same season, Carnall recorded a 27-6 doubles mark to tie the school record. Combined with Megan Doran, is the winningest doubles pair in Delaware history (43-8). As a senior, Carnall was named the UD Alumni Association Team Most Valuable player in addition to earning Colonial Athletic Association Singles Second Team honors. She finished the season with a singles record of 18-7 and a fourgame winning streak. Carnall was also an ITA Regionals competitor in both singles and doubles action her senior season.
During her junior campaign, she posted a 2411 record in singles play, while combining with Megan Doran to tally a 24-6 overall doubles mark. Carnall also was the Swarthmore Invitational Flight B Doubles Champion with Doran. She won the Saint Joseph’s University Flight 2 Singles and Flight 1 Doubles titles and was named the National 5&10 Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for October 3. Carnall was also named the CAA Singles Player of the Week for April 13. Off of the court, Carnall was a four-time Dean’s List and Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll selection, earning the honor each year of her career. As a senior, she was named to the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society. Carnall spent a lot of her free time as a tennis camp coach (UMASS & Tennis in the Streets), volunteering with the Special Olympics and as a member of the Blue Hen Marketing Club. She was also the elected team representative for the Delaware Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where she negotiated, discussed and voted on issues relevant to the student-athlete body, developed advertising concepts and campaigns, and interacted and collaborated with faculty, other student organizations and student-athletes. A native of Northampton, Mass., Carnall received her Bachelor of Science in Marketing with an Advertising minor from Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics in May 2012.

BLUE HEN MEN’S TENNIS The Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2011-12, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 19 teams in 13 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2012. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2011-12, 24 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 51 student-athletes received All-America honors in 16 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past six years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason. VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting 12

victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. At least five CAA teams have reached postseason play for the past four years. The CAA has also had great success in women’s basketball, with six teams making the postseason in 2011-12. Conference champion Delaware advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time and was ranked #7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. James Madison beat two ACC and two Big East teams to reach the championship game of the WNIT. Drexel, Hofstra, UNCW and VCU joined the Dukes in the WNIT. Old Dominion, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997. The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981 and ODU reached the national semifinals in 2011. Four men’s soccer teams earned NCAA Tournament berths last season and James Madison became the seventh CAA team to reach the final 16 of the event in the past decade. Hofstra’s softball team won the Los Angeles Regional and became the first CAA squad to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. At least two women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past five seasons.
William & Mary’s men’s cross country squad has made the NCAA Championship in 12 of the past 13 years. In the pool, George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. On the track, Mason’s David Verburg placed fourth in the 400 meters at the NCAA Championship. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 15 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last 10 Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.
