UCSB Recreation introduced an enhanced online registration system in November 2015. Accounts created prior to November 23, 2015 are no longer active. Anyone with a current UCSB Net ID will automatically have an account in the new system. Returning and new community/nonaffiliated patrons are still welcome to participate in many of our programs but an account must be created.

How do you
FIND YOUR
FIT?
T
”
he Department of Recreation strives to help each individual—whether student, staff, or community member—find their perfect fit. In this issue, we would like to introduce you to a handful of our long-time friends and participants. Meet Melody and Bill, college sweethearts who developed a love for pottery and ceramics in our very own Gaucho Rec courses back in the ‘60s. Here they are 30 years later with a rekindled passion for creativity attending our courses once again and growing in skill with our revamped facilities. We also have Guillermo, a student staff member of the Recreational Sports Office, who reflects on how Recreation has greatly influenced his UCSB experience. Then there’s Terra, a UCSB yoga instructor for over 20 years, who promotes overall well-being and finds joy in teaching our students how to practice yoga traditions through times of stress. While working with our students, she is continually encouraged by their curiosity and openness to challenge their bodies through exercise. These folks each found their joy and inspiration from different opportunities, but they all agree they have found their fit with UCSB Recreation. We are proud to unite everyone looking for fun, imagination, and adventure - maybe your story about how you play at UCSB Recreation is next!

[ GUILLERMO ] REC SPORTS OFFICE STAFF | 5TH YEAR
This job changed my life. My college experience would have been nowhere near as fantastic if it had not been for my experience with Rec Sports. I started out working for Intramural Sports and am now a leader on the Rec Sports Office Staff — a valuable professional work experience for so many college students. I've met friends, found passions, and explored career goals through the Department of Recreation.
[ MELODY ] GAUCHO REC POTTERY PARTICIPANT [My husband and I] plan on coming here as long as we can! We just love it, this is a great facility. This was not here when we were students. It's like a country club; it's a real joy to access the ceramics facility! We loved being at UCSB and taking pottery classes in the 60's, and we love taking classes now. It's a beautiful place to be.
[ TERRA ]
GAUCHO REC YOGA INSTRUCTOR One of the things that I love about teaching university students is that there’s generally an openness, a curiosity that is truly exciting. Anyone who has an open mind can achieve so much. By teaching an 8-week series rather than just classes in a studio, I get to see all of the positive outcomes. There’s an evolution to the process. With UCSB students in particular, there’s an eagerness to learn that I would attribute partly to the quality of this school.

New Year, New Rec!
W
inter quarter promises fresh starts, new resolutions, and new classes! Even as El Niño approaches, we encourage you to explore the various offerings at Recreation where in some cases you can stay dry (say a warm & cozy massage therapy session) or get wet (sweat it up on new equipment in our awesome fitness center). Also in 2016, the Department of Recreation proudly presents a revamping of our department website: recreation.ucsb.edu. A year’s worth of creative solutions has yielded a shiny, brand new site that operates more intuitively to the user and truly mirrors our thriving nature. We think you will be able to navigate the new and improved site with ease and clearly see all of the amazing activities and promotions that we offer. You’ll still find our Gaucho REC classes along
with instructor bios, a student events calendar, summer offerings, and employment opportunities, but we will be using a new portal through which you can register for programs, classes, trips, and special events. Though different, this change certainly allows for a more intuitive registration process, and you might have noticed the DiRECtory no longer contains barcodes making registration even more efficient and accessible. One important thing remains the same: winter is the biggest season for Recreation. Whether it be your New Year’s resolution to get fit, develop a new skill, or get active with friends, we’ve got you covered. So brave that rain, and make your way over to Recreation where we aim to provide countless opportunities to help you start off 2016 meaningfully and healthily!
