Home to the Knights’ men’s and women’s basketball programs, the 10,000-seat venue also opened in the fall of 2007. The arena, which also hosts concerts and UCF commencement ceremonies, includes luxury boxes and suites, open concourse areas and numerous concession op ons.

UCF KNIGHTS

SE ASON P RE V IE W Almost as soon as UCF closed its 2008 season in the NCAA Tournament, the Knights started ge ng excited about what was in store for 2009. The Black and Gold easily has one of the most entertaining schedules in the country, return the majority of its starters and welcome another solid recrui ng class into the mix.

level early on. Last year we started at Florida State and Florida, we lost vs. FSU and turned around and beat Florida five days later. We showed that we had the will to win, and it was fun to rebound like that. For non-conference, we can’t have peaks and valleys. We have to be on the rise constantly.

With a lot to look forward to, head coach Amanda Cromwell opens her 11th year with the Knights and provides some insight on the 2009 campaign.

There are a lot of newcomers, and with most starters returning, the only glaring vacancy from the 2008 forwards was the departure of Danielle dos Santos. Who could break through the lineup right away to fill that gap? We have a lot of players coming in that could contribute to the a ack, especially our two interna onals. Tiia Tikkanen is a pure forward from Finland, and Bianca Joswiak from Germany is a li le more versa le, she can be in the a ack but played everywhere for the German U-20s. Other incomers who will compete to be in the a acking lineup are Tishia Jewell, Amy Carhart, Nicole e Radovcic and Chloe Stokes. From the returning players, Kacie Horner and Amanda Martorana have been ge ng fit and healthy so they could see some more me up front. We have a core group of very talented a ackers who bring different strengths and will fill that role by scoring goals and ge ng assists.

CROMWELL Q&A What is the first thing you think of when you start talking about the upcoming season? The first thing I think of is our extremely hard schedule. Non-conference we have the defending na onal champion North Carolina, Duke, FSU, South Florida, LSU, South Carolina, FGCU and FIU. There are a lot of quality teams there and the strength of Conference USA from top to bo om is growing tremendously. It will be even more cu hroat this season because there will be only six teams going to the conference tournament (instead of eight). There is a lot at stake each game, especially since the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the standings get a bye going into the tournament. Everyone is going to be figh ng to get into the postseason along with trying to finish in the top two. Since the schedule never seems to let up, will it be difficult for your players to stay at their highest level from August all of the way to the postseason? We definitely don’t want to peak too early in the season but we need to be playing well in August. Early on every team goes through some growing pains and figures out where their rookies fit in. Most teams aren’t playing their best yet in August and September, so we want to capitalize on that. Some mes you can catch teams early that aren’t quite se led yet. Our focus in our preseason is to get things se led, like our forma on, expecta ons, what the players’ roles are going to be, so going forward we can play at a high

Only one starter is lost from the midfield (Hanna Wilde) and back (Sarah de Leon) as well, but so much returns. Who might be some of the players that we will see more of this season? Emily Maynard, Amaka Ofuani, Chris na Petrucco, Lauren Halbert and Nikki Moore are the returners who will be seeing a lot of minutes in the back but we have tough and talented rookies Kim Newsome and Stacy Kadell joining us and they will fight for a spot as well. Andrea Rodrigues played with the U-20 Brazilian Team at le back so that will be a posi on she fights for, Carhart could be a dangerous a acking outside back and center back op ons are Jus ne Quick and Kristen Poulton.

Halbert will also play in the defensive-mid along with ball-winner Stacie Hubbard. Our mainstays in midfield are Becca Thomas, our workhorse, Ka e Jackson and Brianna Schooley. Martorana is a speedy outside-midfield op on and rookie Marleigh Howard is a skillful player who can send in a great cross. Other newcomers who will compete for me in the a acking midfield are skillful playmakers Alex Brandt and Stokes. Goalkeeper Aline Reis is coming off an All-America season. It’s hard to achieve that two years in a row, so how do you think she will respond as a sophomore? Considering Aline was in Brazil’s full na onal team camp this summer, we have no doubt that she will be ready to repeat her All-American performance. Her consistency in college is going to help her get a spot on the Brazilian team and I think she knows that. Lynzee Lee, though, was in goal all spring and played extremely well and she is one of our fi est players who has been working hard to get ready for 2009. We are very lucky to have two high level goalkeepers and they both know they have to be ready when called upon.

Nikki Moore has been selected to an AllC-USA postseason team all three years.

AMANDA CROMWELL

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Head coach - 11th season with the Knights It is very difficult to describe the UCF women’s soccer program in one sentence. With head coach Amanda Cromwell con nuously pu ng the Knights on the na onal stage, one needs to use terms such as NCAA Tournaments, conference championships, top-25 rankings and All-Americans just to get a start on what this program is all about. Team Success Since taking over the helm of UCF women’s soccer in 1999, Cromwell has guided her team to a 141-63-14 record, seven NCAA Tournaments, four Atlan c Sun Tournament championships and two Conference USA regular-season tles. The Knights have capped off the last eight seasons ranked among the top squads in the Southeast Region by SoccerBuzz.com, including a No. 7 ranking in 2003 and 2004 and a No. 9 ranking in 2007. In 2008 alone, UCF spent seven weeks in the na onal polls and achieved its highest Southeast Region ranking in program history when it was fi h in October. Individual Honors In addi on to her accomplishments as head coach, Cromwell also has helped her players excel individually both on and off the field. During her tenure, Knights have earned 64 allconference honors and 24 Na onal Soccer Coaches Associa on of America (NSCAA) All-Region selec ons. In 2008, she helped Aline Reis develop into UCF’s first All-American since 1995, as Reis was one of just three freshmen on either the first or second team. Meanwhile, Courtney Baines (2004 and 2005) and Jennifer Manis (2007) both received conference defensive player of the year honors, Danielle dos Santos was the 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Jennifer Montgomery was named 2002 A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Michelle Anderson earned 2001 A-Sun Player of the Year recogni on. In the classroom, Cromwell’s student-athletes have collected 203 conference academic awards. In 2005, Baines received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors and the C-USA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Award. Dos Santos later would become the sixth player in UCF history to earn NSCAA/adidas Women’s Collegiate Scholar All-America honors in 2008, joining former Cromwell protégés Baines, Jennifer Manis, Jackie VanLooven and Allison Blagriff.

Individually, Jennifer Manis, Hanna Wilde and Moore all earned a spot on the 2007 All-C-USA First Team, and Manis and Kate Begley were on the C-USA All-Academic Team. During its sophomore campaign in C-USA in 2006, UCF posted a record of 11-6-2, including wins over No. 9 Rice and No. 15 SMU. Five Knights were named to the all-conference teams as Roberta Pelarigo and Becca Thomas grabbed first-team honors and goalkeeper Jennifer Manis received a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team. Both Pelarigo and Manis also were tapped for NSCAA All-Southeast Region accolades. The Knights enjoyed tremendous success in their inaugural season in C-USA in 2005. They posted a 12-10 mark and an 8-1 record in conference play to earn a share of the regular season championship. The season also marked a milestone in Cromwell’s career with the Black and Gold as she won her 100th match as the Knights’ mentor, taking a 2-1 win against Houston on Oct. 30. During the team’s final year in the Atlan c Sun, the Knights went 17-4-2 overall and were a perfect 9-0 against teams from the state of Florida, including wins over No. 14 Florida State and No. 10 Florida. They were 8-2 in league play as they picked up the A-Sun’s first ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Florida, 3-2, in the first round before falling to Boston College, 2-1, in the second round. Cromwell led UCF to a 16-5-1 record in 2003 as the team won the A-Sun Tournament crown for the third-consecu ve season. The Black and Gold advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where Florida topped the Knights, 3-2, in double over me in the first round. The success of 2003 came on the heels of a record-breaking 2002 season. That year, the Knights posted an 18-5-0 mark, eclipsing the program record for most wins previously set by Cromwell’s 1999 squad. A er defending both the A-Sun regular season and tournament tles, UCF returned to the NCAA postseason for the second-consecu ve year. In 2001, the Knights finished with a 14-6 record and took top honors in the A-Sun before making a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second me under Cromwell’s leadership. UCF compiled an 8-11-1 overall mark and landed second in the conference in 2000 thanks to a 7-2 record against A-Sun opponents. A er a 7-5 start in 1999, UCF rebounded with a 10game unbeaten streak that included a 1-0 win over Furman in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before perennial power North Carolina halted the Knights’ bid for a na onal crown. They finished the year with a 16-61 overall record and an 8-0-1 conference mark.

Cromwell helped Team USA claim the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2008.

Year-By-Year Highlights Cromwell and the Knights put together a grueling schedule for 2008, and the results did not disappoint. UCF completed the year at 14-6-3, and went 5-2-1 in a non-conference slate that included four ranked teams. That, along with a 7-2-2 mark in C-USA, helped the it secure an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, where it topped Miami to reach at least the second round for the eighth me in school history. UCF finished 2008 by ranking first in All-C-USA Team selec ons, with Becca Thomas and Nikki Moore leading the way as members of the first team. The 2007 season gave the Knights yet another ring, as the Knights claimed a share of the C-USA regular-season tle and finished 15-4-4. UCF went on to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, where it defeated Auburn and played No. 6 Florida to a 0-0 draw in the second round. The Black and Gold completed 2007 ranked No. 20 in the final RPI poll and No. 30 in the Soccer Buzz na onal rankings.
