STEVE DOTEN Head Coach 10th Year California ’90

Steve Doten enters his 11th season at the helm of the UC Davis men’s water polo program. He enjoyed his best season to date in 2007, when his team won a school-record 22 games, went undefeated against members of the Western Water Polo Association, then advanced to the title game of the conference tournament. For his part, Doten was selected as WWPA Coach of the Year. During that season, UC Davis climbed as high as No. 8 in the national poll, finishing at No. 11. The previous year, the Aggies ascended to No. 6 in the collegiate rankings -- the highest in Doten’s career. The team posted six wins over top-10 programs during that season. Additionally, his student-athletes have enjoyed a parade of accolades during recent seasons. In 2007, David Welch, Nick Arrigo and Mike McGee each earned ACWPC All-America honorable mention and claimed spots on the All-WWPA squad. McGee and Arrigo added third-team All-America honors in 2008. On October 5, 2007, UC Davis defeated 15th-ranked Pacific by a final of 8-4, marking Doten’s 100th career victory. He enters the upcoming season with a career mark of 123-112 overall, including a 76-33 conference ledger. Doten’s teams also have enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom. The Aggies’ composite grade-point average has risen each year since his arrival. In 2006-07, Doten’s squad was a co-winner of the athletics department’s Lysle Leach Award for sporting the highest overall team GPA. Four made the ACWPC All-Academic squad, including the inclusion of Welch in the Outstanding category. Welch also added ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second-team honors. UC Davis men’s water polo repeated as co-recipient of the Lysle Leach Award in 2008 and was one of just five teams nationwide to amass a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0 during the 2007-08 academic year. Furthermore, a total of 10 Aggies captured ACWPC All-Academic awards.

Other key seasons in Doten’s UC Davis career include the 2002 campaign, in which the Aggies tied the school record with 19 wins. That team also posted 15 wins in the WWPA, the highest mark since 1990. In 2001, his first season at UC Davis, Doten was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. He also guided two players, Travis Engelman and Tim Rogers, to first-team All-American status. In addition to his duties at UC Davis, Doten started the Davis Water Polo Club men’s open team in the summer of 2001, for which he serves as head coach. In 2003, both his junior and senior teams qualified for the USA Water Polo National Championships for the first time. In 2005, Doten brought the national tournament to Schaal Aquatics Center, where is 20-and-under team won the bronze medal. In 2008, Doten’s senior national team placed eighth, its highest-ever finish. In 2004 and 2007, Doten was selected as Elite Coach of the Year for the Central California Zone by the USAWP Coaches Committee. Additionally, Doten served as president of the WWPA from 2003 to 2006. Then in 2009, he was chosen for the staff at the USA Water Polo Holiday Camp, an annual event for the Olympic Development Program (ODP). Prior to UC Davis, Doten was an assistant coach with the Cal women’s water polo team from 1995-99. During this time, the Golden Bears finished second at the Collegiate Water Polo National Championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Doten also served as a coach for the Golden Bear Water Polo Club team. He helped lead the team to two USWP national championships in 1998 and 1999. As a player, Doten spent three seasons (1986-88) under legendary coaches Pete Cutino and Steve Heaston, helping Cal to a 91-14 record during that time and NCAA championships in 1987 and 1988. The Golden Bears were national runners-up in 1986. Doten, who graduated from UC Berkeley in 1990 with a degree in sports sociology, earned his master’s in kinesiology and physical education in 1994 and completed course work for his Ph.D. in education in 2000. He and his wife, Lisa, have three children - daughters Kendall and Brooke, and son Trey. The family resides in Davis. All three children play for the Davis Water Polo Club. WAYNE TILCOCK

TOM KURTH Assistant Coach 5th Year California ’05

Former California center and Davis Senior High School standout Tom Kurth returned to his hometown to serve as Steve Doten’s top assistant for 2006. He now enters his fifth season on the coaching staff, having rejoined the Aggies in 2010 after a one-year hiatus. Kurth lettered four years for the Golden Bears, serving as team captain as a senior in 2005. He scored 23 goals during his career, including a career-high 12 in his senior season. Kurth also played club ball for Lamorinda, helping his team capture the bronze medal at the USWP Senior Nationals. He graduated from Cal in June 2006, earning his degree in history. Before his collegiate career, Kurth had been a first-team All-American at Davis High, helping lead the Blue Devils to four straight Sac-Joaquin Section championships. He earned section MVP honors as a senior in 2001, having scored 219 goals during his final two years. In June of 2010, Kurth married former UC Davis lacrosse great Tarryn Furr.

MATT SORGENFREI Volunteer Assistant 1st Year Cal Poly ’07

SCHAAL AQUATICS CENTER On April 21, 1998, former Aggie swimmer Rand Schaal and his father Ted made a $1.4 million donation to the university, $1 million of which was earmarked toward the construction of a new aquatics facility. That contribution, the largest in the history of the intercollegiate athletics department, helped spur the 1999 Facilities And Campus Enhancement (F.A.C.E.) Initiative, which funded the remainder of the aquatics center as well as other campus venues. The complex features an all-deep 65-meter by 25-yard pool with a depth ranging from seven feet to 14 feet (for diving purposes), men’s and women’s locker rooms, four team rooms, training facilities, office space and a fixed-seating capacity for approximately 500. The Schaal Aquatics Center opened its doors during the 200304 season, serving UC Davis swimming and diving, and the Aggie men’s and women’s water polo programs. In its short lifetime, it has already hosted several championship events, including both the men’s and women’s WWPA Championships in 2004-05 and the 2005 USWP Men’s National Championships. The facility also serves as a home course for local club aquatics programs. In May of 2006, Schaal Aquatics Center served as the host for the eight-team National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship (shown below). The event marked the first time an NCAA final was held on the UC Davis campus since the Division II men’s gymnastics championships took place at Recreation Hall.

Former Cal Poly swimmer and current UC Davis Ph.D. student Matt Sorgenfrei joined Steve Doten’s men’s water polo staff as a volunteer assistant in 2010. He serves mostly as a team statistician. An alumnus of Palo Alto High, Sorgenfrei competed in the 400 individual medley and 400 free relay before graduating with his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He then headed northward to UC Davis, completing his M.S. in the same field in 2009. During his time in Davis, Sorgenfrei made his acquaintance with Doten and the local water polo scene as a member of the Davis WPC. Sorgenfrei enters his third year in the Ph.D. program at UC Davis. His younger brother, Mike, faced the Aggies on numerous occasions as a member of the Santa Clara water polo team.

Scholarly Pursuits UC Davis men’s water polo continues to showcase its talent in the classroom as well as the competition pool, with eight studentathletes earning All-Academic honors from either the ACWPC or the conference. The ACWPC awards three levels: Outstanding (3.71-4.00), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40). The WWPA has no such designation, but requires that the honoree ranks in his team’s top 10 in minutes played. The men’s water polo team had the highest GPA of the 2010-11 school year from Fall 2010 through Spring 2011. However, due to a quirk in the methodology, Aggie men’s soccer won the Lysle Leach Men’s Team GPA Award. That honor measured from Spring 2010 through Winter 2011, during which the water polo team finished second. ACADEMICS

UC Davis comprises three colleges (Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Letters & Science), five professional schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine) plus the Division of Biological Sciences. With 103 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate programs, the university offers the most expansive and diverse range of academics among any of the University of California campuses. Additionally, students also have the opportunity to combine majors or customize their field of study by creating an individual major. For those interested in graduate degrees – whether it be a master’s degree or a doctorate – UC Davis offers advising services to help students craft their education toward those goals. An estimated 86 percent of UC Davis students applying to graduate schools earn acceptance to either their first or second choices.

COMMUNITY

With a population of approximately 60 thousand, Davis is widely known for being a safe, active and socially innovative community. The downtown area boasts a multitude of specialty shops, restaurants, theaters and art galleries; while the city’s numerous parks offer recreational opportunities for active students.

ACTIVITIES

On campus, UC Davis students can rally around the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, fraternities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government. For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue. In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the surrounding communities.

GETTING AROUND

Nestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sacramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean’s top beaches. Within Davis and its neighboring towns, both Yolobus and the student-operated Unitrans bus systems offer free transportation to registered undergraduates. The town boasts more bicycles per capita than any other city in the nation. More than 50 miles of bike paths make the entire town conducive to both riders and pedestrians.

Michelle Roppeau Director of Athletic Academic Advising

UC Davis ranks among the leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and Academic AllDistrict/America honorees, and has claimed a record three winners of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Student-Athlete Academic Services deserves much of the credit for these accomplishments. The office has since expanded to include additional academic advisors, an athletic aid coordinator, an assistant eligibility coordinator and an administrative assistant. It is headed by Nona Richardson, senior associate director of athletics. The Student-Athlete Academic Services office provides a range of services to student-athletes on all 26 intercollegiate athletics teams, including assistance with course and major selection as well as interpretation and clarification of eligibility rules and issues.

UC Davis student-athletes typically have a minimum of three academic advisors: an athletic academic advisor assigned by sport, a college advisor, and a major advisor (if the student has a declared major). Although appointments with the athletic academic advisors are not mandatory at UC Davis, student-athletes might choose to see their athletic academic advisor for issues including: • General education (GE) requirements • Dropping/adding courses • Time management/study skills • Assistance completing the mandatory Academic Plan Form • Study hall for student-athletes • Personal issues that affect academic performance • Choosing a major/career • Declaring or changing a major • Exploration of opportunities beyond athletics • Preparation for graduate programs • Preparation and application for NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and other national awards
