At the age of 86, the reign of our Queen has indeed fashioned her as a diamond, formed under high pressure and conditions. As God’s people, and as a nation, let us stand and salute her, to honour her and pray for Her Majesty, and celebrate this amazing milestone. Throughout our nation’s long history the Monarchy has played a leadership role which time, changing traditions, even revolution could not erode. Notorious in their misuse of power, famous in their weaknesses, yet some leading by good example, to this day the constitution of the United Kingdom validates the legal position of the Sovereign as Head of State. As an hereditary monarchy it is by birth that the Sovereign is appointed to fulfil this role. Elizabeth Windsor was born to be Queen and we humbly acknowledge God’s hand upon the family that stewards the royal leadership of this nation, that she was and is, His choice to fulfil this unique role. 4 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday UEEN ETH II BY JULIE BROWN JUBILEE Our Queen is Head of State in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as in 15 other nations including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In all 15 nations she is ‘Queen in Person’, the British parliament having no role whatsoever. In each country and in the Commonwealth of Nations she is a person of tremendous influence. As we celebrate a whole lifetime given in service of her peoples, we thank God that Queen Elizabeth has not wavered in her public declaration of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, remembering too that she is still the only person who can uphold the promises made on June 2nd 1953 in her Coronation Oath, particularly that she would ‘maintain the true profession of the Gospel.’ To stand so strongly can be no easy task and increasingly there is a need to pray for our Queen that she might steward her responsibilities to the greatest possible effect in the days that lie ahead. The scriptures declare that we must acknowledge her authority: ‘Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established’ Romans 13:1. We must also pray for her, ‘I exhort therefore that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men; for Kings and for all that are in authority...for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.’ 1 Timothy 2:1-3. The scriptures also reveal that ‘Love and faithfulness keep a King safe; through love his throne is made secure.’ Proverbs 20:28. As we mark this tremendous milestone, may God’s people lead the way in showing our love and commitment towards Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth that she might fulfil all that God has planned for her, to the very end of her reign. Pray: ‘Father, we thank you for the way our Queen has served us so faithfully for 60 years. We pray that she will be greatly strengthened by the presence of Your Spirit in her life. Bless her with peace and fulfilment within her family and may she experience Your love and guiding hand as she continues to serve as Head of State in our nation.’ Julie Brown worked overseas with Ed Silvoso as part of the Harvest Evangelism team for five years. During this time of training, she became aware of some of God's plans for our own nation, England, and so returned home to intercede and pray for the fulfilment of our nation's destiny in God, and particularly for the Royal Family. ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 5 INTERVIEW BE A PART OF THE 2012 OLYMPICS GAMES REV DUNCAN GREEN INTERVIEWED BY SANDRA SMITH Tell us about yourself and your role within LOCOG. I’m not a keen sportsman but I was off sick when we won the Olympics bid so happened to see it on television. I wondered what the Church was going to do. I had expertise in setting things up and delivering projects so when the post was advertised I was encouraged to apply. I liaise with Government departments and Olympic authorities, work with other faiths, and enthuse and excite Church about the Olympics. The IOC charter states the Olympics should be free from religious and political influence so this is an ecumenical organisation. My role is to ensure the Church is involved in what is the biggest event in the UK for decades. How can the Olympic Games benefit not just the community (particularly East London) but also the nation as a whole? Traditionally, Church is good at being in a different place to everybody else. But with a third of our population belonging to sports clubs or playing sport, plus many more people watching sport, the Olympics is a marvellous mission opportunity which affects the whole country. The Beijing Olympics was watched by over 80% of the country’s population. 6 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday How can the Olympic Games benefit a local church? Most parishes have a variety of sports clubs and there’ll be a surge of sport because of the Olympics. So for Churches this is a chance to establish new relationships, perhaps by holding services as a celebration of sport and inviting sports clubs for non-cringe Christian services. How can the ordinary person at home feel part of, or get involved in, the Olympics? By encouraging their Church to register with More Than Gold - a Christian response to the Games which supplies resources and a list of things they can do. A mission team is also available. Will there be opportunities to reach out to the numerous athletes and their families during the Games? Athlete Family Homestay encourages Christians to offer accommodation to athletes who are unable to afford their own lodgings. Will there be a visible Church presence to spectators visiting the Olympic Park and other venues? No, but local faith buildings and communities around London will respond to people’s needs. Details will be posted at information points around the city. Representing your country is the pinnacle of success for athletes and very demanding. How can we pray and encourage the athletes involved? By adopting a country or individual and praying for them. We should also pray for a safe and secure Olympics. There is a prayer relay going round the country which is the biggest vocalisation of prayer this country has ever seen. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to be involved. From a Church point of view, what are you hoping will be the legacy of the London Olympics? The one thing I don’t want is for ministers to look back with regret after the Games. This is not a flash in the pan. When the Olympics moves on, Church will still be there so it needs to take sports ministry seriously. By changing our attitudes and responding to people where they are, we are in a position to react appropriately when the next opportunity comes along – a national celebration or disaster. We have to recognise the real world and look for opportunities where people are - children’s clubs, sports clubs, even shopping malls – and offer chaplaincies, prayer corners or someone to talk to. The Church must respond to the real world. To survive, Church has to be where people are. www.morethangold.org.uk for More Than Gold and Athlete Family Homestay. PRAY FOR THE GAMES IN THE DAILY PRAYER SECTION ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 7 feature BY TIM COOKE At MJK, our heart is to Make Jesus Known to those people that don’t know Him. Since we started five years ago we have seen God do some amazing things – we have shared the gospel with over 150,000 people and seen hundreds respond to Jesus. But there is still so much more to do! As we look around at the state of our nation today it reminds us of the urgent need for the people of our country to hear the gospel message in a relevant and creative way. Sadly for many people the Christian message is completely unknown or misunderstood. The church is simply not reaching them. that help us to share about Jesus. We have a state of the art mobile sound stage, various inflatables (bouncy castles, human table football) and a cutting-edge rap band. We work in partnership with churches across the nation to run outreach events – from Party in the Parks, to schools missions and street outreach. We have found that the bolder we are about Jesus the more people respond to the challenge to follow him. People in our country are interested in Jesus – we just need to tell them about Him in a relevant way. God has given MJK a unique gift of being able to connect with people on a large scale. He has given us awesome resources One example is a Party in the Park community event we ran in a very deprived area of Salford with no real Christian witness. The ‘not-yet-Christians’ in the community were the ones who initially asked us to come and make Jesus known in their area. At first, the police were very hesitant, as they feared large crowds would result in a riot due to the nature of the area. The outreach was a huge success with over a thousand locals coming and 250 taking a response pack. Since then there has been ongoing discipleship of those who responded and more people 8 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday are giving their life to Jesus. If we as the church will take the opportunities God is giving us, we can see this nation turned upside down! The Bible clearly tells us ‘how can they believe if they haven’t heard, and how can they hear if no one tells them.’ We have seen this to be so true. Vast numbers in our country can’t believe in Jesus because no one has told them. That is where the work of Make Jesus Known comes in – we are telling them in a way they can understand. Can we work with you to Make Jesus Known in your community? Pray for: • Churches to reach out to their communities sharing the Good News about Jesus. • Favour with local authorities to hold outreach events. • God’s blessing for outreach ministries to provide people, resources and finance. Tim Cooke is the founder and CEO of Make Jesus Known and their desire is to make Jesus known to people that don't know him. UCB2GO.CO.UK praying for his presence Preparing to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games JANE HOLLOWAY MORE THAN GOLD PRAYER TEAM As we approach the countdown for the last few weeks before the Olympic Games starts, there is still much work to be done by all those involved in More than Gold. Thousands of churches will be using the Games as an opportunity to host community festivals, sports clinics, holiday clubs, sports quizzes, BBQs etc. Those who have volunteered to be Games Pastors will be in final training in order to be ‘welcomers’ at transport hubs across Greater London, including major airports and train stations. The Athletes Family Homestay team will be doing the final preparations in linking athlete family members with Christian host families. And the many overseas mission teams and performing artists will be preparing to come and work with local churches to share the good news of Jesus in word and deed as we welcome thousands of overseas visitors. Pray during this time under the More Than Gold banner of ‘A Time to Shine’ – a call to pray for communities and nations (taken from Isaiah 60:1-5) – Shine as the Flame Travels. Jesus - you shine in all your dazzling glory: The brightest star cannot compare to your majesty; The hottest sun cannot compare to your power; The fairest moon cannot compare to your beauty. Light our way as this nation prepares to host the 2012 Games: Shine grace on athletes in their training; Shine wisdom on the authorities in their planning; Shine your love in our hearts as we open our doors to welcome guests from many nations. We rejoice in your glorious presence with us, Praying that the light of your love and grace will transform us all. www.morethangold.org.uk Amen. www.worldprayer.org.uk www.prayerforum.org (Adapted from More than Gold prayer resources Shine in the New Year) ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 11 feature CATHERINE BUTCHER a H C N U L G I B FOR THE DIAMOND JUBILEE How will you celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee? A record number of people are expected to take part in the fourth annual Big Lunch on Sunday 3 June 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee. HOPE - the national mission initiative - is encouraging churches to take a lead. Roy Crowne, HOPE’s Executive Director, said: ‘This is a calendar moment - an unmissable opportunity to make connections in your area, building up your community and reaching out through our words and actions.’ There are churches in nearly every village, town and city and members of every denomination are already planning creative ways to get involved in a Big Lunch or offer their catering facilities. 12 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday All Souls Church, Twickenham, first got involved with the Big Lunch in 2009. Since then they have helped host the street party alongside their local Residents' Association each year. Roads near the church are closed and they fill the space with tables and chairs, a bandstand for live music, a bouncy castle, free face-painting and hot drinks in the church garden. As the Big Lunch is always on a Sunday, the congregation spills out of the morning service to join other local residents. Everyone brings food to eat and share. The Vicar, Rev Richard Frank says, ‘It's a fantastic way to engage with our neighbours, bless the community and open up the doors of church to those who'd never usually make it, even into the church garden. We'd enthusiastically recommend it for any local church in a residential area.’ PRAY FOR THE MONARCHY IN DAILY PRAYERS ON P7 “ It's a fantastic way to engage with our neighbours, bless the community and open up the doors of church to those who'd never usually make it, even into the church garden. Rev Richard Frank Actions and words As well as giving churches the chance to serve communities with a fantastic party, the Diamond Jubilee gives people links to answer questions about faith. • The Crown Jewels – Have you noticed how many crosses feature on the Crown Jewels? What does the cross mean to you? • Priceless gems – The royal regalia includes the second largest cut diamond in the world but the Queen was given a Bible at the Coronation with the words: ‘This is the most valuable thing that this world affords’. What makes the Bible so valuable? • Sacred anointing – At the most sacred moment in the Coronation, the Queen wore a simple, plain white gown to emphasise that it’s God’s anointing that makes the difference. Did you know that God’s anointing isn’t just reserved for royalty? How do you get God’s anointing? ” • Swords – One of the symbolic swords used in the Coronation was the ‘Sword of Mercy’ which has a broken tip. What has mercy got to do with faith? Pray for churches to put their faith into action and work in unity to host a big lunch event for the local community. Ask God to prepare the hearts of those that will be touched and that there will opportunities to share the gospel. God sees nations, loves them, longs for them, and has calling and purpose for them. He has already acted for nations by sending Jesus to bless them. The word of God speaks prophetically – 'I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.' (Isaiah 49:6 ESV) We must intercede for the nations; we must certainly seek to offer loving sacrificial service and clear witness to the thousands converging on our island, but we must also speak out blessings. As priests of the Most High we have a calling to fulfil as enumerated in Deuteronomy 10:8 - to carry the presence, to stand and serve the Lord, and to pronounce blessings in His name. God seems to be creating a global awakening of the missing art of speaking blessing. We receive many testimonies from people and churches who tell their stories of God’s kingdom powerfully advancing (Matthew 11:12) as blessings are spoken. This is not instead of, but alongside, prayer and witness. There 14 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday BY ROY GODWIN is tremendous power available when we speak in His name. Blessing is both commanded and effective. Doors open. Encounters take place. Hearts change. Churches speak of breakthrough; there is change in areas and communities; lives are transformed. During May 2011, my wife led a 182 mile walk along the Welsh/English border as part of a strategy to bless it and see the Kingdom of God break in with greater power on both sides. Fourteen Houses of Prayer were established on either side and she walked between them ‘stitching the land’ and carrying a blessing which each would use for their neighbouring nation. Just a few months later County Councils and action groups from both sides have signed an agreement to work together to increase the prosperity of the exact region that had been blessed. The kingdom is coming and faith is rising. There is tremendous power available when we speak in His name. How can we bless the nations? We speak in His name. All nations need the blessings of God, the authoritative power and transformative blessing that flows from heaven. So let us speak (not pray but speak out) as follows: 'Nations and peoples, I bless you in the mighty name of Jesus that the glory of God and the knowledge of the Saviour might break out in your midst. I bless you in Jesus’ name that justice and mercy might rise up in your Land. I bless you that prosperity might come and that the knowledge of the Lord might come in like a flood. I bless you that you might arise in favour and Godly purpose amongst the nations.' Don’t forget the individuals either; many not-yetbelievers who would be antagonistic towards offers of prayer find the offer of blessing hugely attractive. Finally, be blessed as you bless others. May the wonderful blessings of our Father flood your heart and whole being now and forever. 'But at the same time I thank the Lord.' 'I was born and raised in an Islamic culture but I never found true peace in Islam. I feel great fear about declaring this. Until now I haven’t told anyone here what has happened with me because the fear fills my heart that anyone would discover that I have become a Christian.' Ahmad is one of many Saudis who have become followers of Jesus Christ through Christian satellite TV. God is clearly doing miracles in Saudi Arabia. Sometimes people come to know God through a TV programme and frequently God reveals Himself in a vision or a dream. Fadi*, another Saudi, tells Open Doors worker Bruce his story. 'About a year ago I started watching the Christian TV Channel. The programmes are powerful and impacting and they taught me about the teachings of Christianity, which are about love and forgiveness to others. I found that the message of Jesus also gives assurance of salvation and eternal life.' 'I saw myself in the dream in a mosque; there was darkness. When I left the mosque I saw a light, brilliant and strong.' After Fadi became a Christian the dream became clear. He says, 'I understood that I had been transformed from darkness into light. I am very happy with my new life. I am sure that Jesus is the true light and I ask you to continue to pray for me.' In many countries of the Arab world, choosing to follow Jesus means risking rejection by family and society, imprisonment, even death. But like Ahmad and Fadi, many continue to make the brave decision to follow Christ. Open Doors is strengthening Christians in the Arab world to prepare the way for the gospel by providing Bibles and discipleship resources, and giving them sanctuary, security and support. This light brings with it a hope of peace and reconciliation, stretching back to the very first games in 776 BC (ii). This message of peace is being rejuvenated as nations want to bring meaning again to the Olympic Truce. As the 2012 Olympics are hosted in our home nation we have the opportunity to take hold of this longing for peace by being shining beacons for Christ in our nation. This means both celebrating the positives of the games whilst recognising what the games can mean for those vulnerable to exploitation. Since London won the bid in 2005 the country has been readying itself for the arrival of the games, with the city 18 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday preparing itself for the massive influx of tourists. With this comes an accusation of the games causing an increase in trafficking for sexual exploitation. Statistics on this are hard to come by, leaving it difficult to decipher the extent of truth behind such claims. Nevertheless, it is important to be aware of the possibility that trafficking for prostitution might increase, and that due to the influx of people the sex industry will be in great demand. We should not allow this to deflect from the reality that whatever day it is, many women are being taken advantage of and are trapped in an exploitative system of prostitution. This is not a story of numbers, but a story of lives. As the body of Christ we have the opportunity to stand up against this injustice, with the Olympics acting as a reminder that sexual exploitation is something that continues. As we approach the 2012 Olympics we want God to stir up We need to be shining light on to these areas of darkness, that are often left hidden and unnoticed our hearts for those exploited through prostitution and trafficking. We need to be shining light on to these areas of darkness, that are often left hidden and unnoticed, acknowledging the harsh reality that sexual exploitation is happening in every town and city in this country. ‘Beyond the Streets’ in partnership with CARE have produced ‘Gathering Voices: A Journey of Prayer’, with the hope of gathering a network of voices to intercede into the injustice of prostitution and trafficking. This prayer resource is designed to lead people along this journey of prayer, focusing on a different theme each day. At the heart of the daily responses are prayers of intercession written by women whose lives have been directly affected by the trauma of exploitation and have now found freedom. As the 2012 Olympic Games approach we invite you to join with us on this journey of prayer. As we ask God to break our hearts and expand our vision to see a country where people are free from sexual exploitation. We pray that we can bring the light of Jesus into our nation, striving for justice and peace for all, in all times: now, during and beyond the Olympics. PRAY ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN DAILY PRAYER ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 19 how to pray HOW TO PRAY FOR YOUR FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK By the time you read this, Facebook will undoubtedly have 1 billion or more users. That’s impressive but it is only part of the story. By the sovereign hand of God, Facebook can also be used as a powerful prayer tool. Think about it. If millions of people pray for the hundreds of friends on their Facebook friend list—well, Facebook suddenly becomes an unimaginable tool to blanket the world in prayer! If you are excited by this vision of earthsaturating prayer, here are a few things to remember when praying for Facebook friends: 1. Pray for all your friends, not just the ones you feel comfortable praying for. Each person on your Facebook friend list is a person that God has sovereignly introduced into your life. Your friends are likely to be people from all walks of life. But the one thing they all have in common is that God gave you influence in their lives. 2. Pray consistently and systematically. You can’t effectively pray for all your friends every day. But you can choose a few friends each day to pray for specifically by name and by need (if you know it). In a relatively short time, you will have prayed for all your friends and you can begin again. 3. When you pray for a friend, encourage him or her with a notification or personal message. God may already be at work in their hearts, and your message may have eternal impact. 20 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday A Helpful and Easy Way to Pray With this vision of using Facebook to cover the world in prayer, your prayer efforts can be made even easier through an innovative tool called Praybook. This free website (www.praybook.com) interfaces with Facebook. It divides your friend list into a manageable, daily prayer list. By simply clicking a button, you can then notify your friends that you prayed for them. You can also send a personal message. There’s even more to discover at www.praybook.com Prayer through Praybook has already touched many lives around the world. One woman struggling in her faith prayed that God would make Himself known—a Praybook notification was God’s hand reaching to her. Another woman in Africa wrote to say how Praybook is encouraging her to pray for her friends. Relationships have begun healing for another man. Yet another woman suddenly found herself with open doors to share with spiritually antagonistic friends. One international prayer leader states that he believes this is ‘one of the most important breakthroughs in filling up the nations in prayer.’ Many others have shared how Praybook has revitalised their prayer lives. You have an amazing opportunity to have eternal and geographically boundless impact because of the social media of Facebook and the power of prayer through Praybook. Reaching unreached peoples may be as close as your Facebook friend list. Praybook will help you be faithful, consistent, and encouraged in your prayers. Join this movement of lifting up the world . . . one friend at time. Tim Lehmann is the founder and Chief Steward of Praybook (www.Praybook.com). He is deeply humbled and honoured with what God has purposed through Praybook. ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 21 WHAT PRAYER MEANS TO Whilst the losing boxer lays bloodied and beaten on the canvas, the winner tells reporters he attributes his win to God’s will. The footballer scores a goal, looks up and thanks God by making the sign of the Cross. Is it really God’s will that one wins at the expense of another? I don’t think so. Prayer isn’t a way of getting God’s help to gain an advantage, or favouring one over another. It’s simply communicating with God; a conversation with someone you love and respect above all other. I didn’t pray when trying to make a living playing tennis because I didn’t give my life to God until ten years later. But during my career I suffered greatly from the fear of losing and I let myself 22 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday down many times and rarely played to my true ability or fulfilled my potential. But after becoming a Christian, yes, of course I prayed when competing on horses! Eventing is perhaps the most dangerous sport in the world. I prayed the most powerful prayer in the Universe. The Prayer of Relinquishment: 'Let Your will be done not mine.' This released me from fears of injury, of losing or not doing as well I was able. It didn’t mean I won any more than I deserved, but I nearly always had fun…and I never had a serious accident of any nature in twenty years of competing horses – remarkable! As a sportsman, that’s the most important thing of all. Perhaps the prayer of every sportsman should be: 'Lord, let my performance honour you in every way, in victory or defeat.' Chris Lane played competitively and coached tennis for ten years and was Head of PE Department at Emanuel School, Battersea. In 1985, Chris built his own indoor tennis and health club. In 2002, he sold it to the David Lloyd Group and subsequently opened up Kidsports, the first sport club for children in the U.K. Currently Chris is developing a company that focuses on mentoring CEO’s and Senior Management. Pull-out this prayer map of the Olympic sites, put it on your wall or pray over it during the events using the prayer points below: • Planning and delivery of the Games, that everything will run to time, budget and God’s will. • Each place touched by the Games to be places where people find the presence of God. • That all participants will compete honourably, and encounter the living God. • For the UK church to seize every opportunity to get involved in the Olympics, standing together as one. • Pray ‘your kingdom come, your will be done’ over every aspect of the 2012 Games. THURSDAY 10TH MAY HAB 2:14 REVIVAL IN EUROPE SATURDAY 12TH MAY MATT 10:32 PRAYING FOR UCB Europe was the first continent to embrace the Gospel but she is losing her faith. Lord, place Your arms of love around Europe and draw her back to You. Heal her wounds, calm her fears, and cause her to stand firm on the truth of Your Word again. We pray for the team which commissions programmes, that You will give them divine connections with potential programme suppliers, and that You will guide them as they put together programme schedules. FRIDAY 11TH MAY ISA 60:1-3 NATIONS ON MY STREET SUNDAY 13TH MAY GAL 6:7 PRAYER & ME: CONSEQUENCES Lord, I pray a blessing on my neighbours who come from other countries and cultures. May they find love and acceptance in our local community. Lord, give me opportunities to get to know people from other countries, and help us to live together in harmony. Are you facing the consequences of a bad choice? God isn’t gloating, He wants to help. Lord, I choose to bring that uncomfortable situation into my prayers today: not avoiding it out of shame, but humbly asking You to help me face up to it and move on. DP3 MAY THE GAMES MONDAY 14TH MAY MATT 5:14-16 CASCADING LIGHT As this nation follows the progress of the Olympic Torch, an ongoing cascade of prayer will blaze across this land. WEDNESDAY 16TH MAY PSALM 119:105 GUIDING LIGHT As Christians pave the way for the Torch Relay by prayer walking the streets of this nation, we pray that every step will be guided by God’s Spirit. We also pray for the 8,000 torchbearers carrying the Olympic Flame, asking God to bless each one with His peace and joy. THURSDAY 17TH MAY LUKE 24:50-53 ASCENDED LIGHT Jesus, as we remember that You ascended in order to send us the Holy Spirit, we pray that the Olympic Flame will be surrounded by signs of Your Spirit in action. Pray that we will know how to continue to develop the vision and content for the publication, and increase its readership. Through our email, online and social media presence, pray that more people will be encouraged to pray. SUNDAY 20TH MAY JUDGES 17:6 PRAYER & ME: ACCOUNTABILITY Nerve-wracking though it can be to pray with others, our prayer lives are healthier when we’re in relationship. Pray that God’s Spirit will give you a word of encouragement for a prodigal today, and take time to pray for them throughout the day, that they will turn back to God. WEDNESDAY 23RD MAY JOHN 6:69 EXAMPLES AT WORK You have the privilege of demonstrating Jesus in your workplace - not because you’re perfect but because you’re His friend. FRIDAY 25TH MAY 2 COR 4:1-7 WITNESS ON MY STREET I pray for everyone on my street who is yet to know You, that their eyes, blinded to the knowledge of You, will be opened. Give me opportunities to share something of my relationship with You with my neighbours, whether that be in word or in deed. SATURDAY 26TH MAY ISAIAH 58:8 PRAYING FOR UCB Many of UCB’s staff have jobs which involve a large amount of travel. Pray for them, that God will protect and sustain them as they drive or use public transport to travel long distances. Give them discernment to know how to balance their work life with their family life. SUNDAY 27TH MAY 1 PET 2:21-23 PRAYER & ME: CRITICISM It’s Pentecost ... the day when we remember God’s generous gift of His Holy Spirit. Lord, it’s easy to pray Pentecost blessings on those I’m at peace with, but I choose today to pray that You will pour out Your most beautiful, powerful blessings on those who have criticised me this week. As Team GB and the other national teams continue their training in camps all over the British Isles, let’s pray that they will be protected from ill health in these final weeks before the Games. Pray for comfort and strength as they spend many weeks away from home and family. Around 20,000 broadcasters at the International Broadcast Centre will bring the Games to an estimated four billion people worldwide. THURSDAY 14TH JUNE ISA 60:4 VISITORS AT THE GAMES Pray that we will truly be a hospitable nation, with Christians in every community proactively welcoming the thousands of visitors from other nations. Pray that each one will find its way to the right person, and that many will find a relationship with Jesus as a result of receiving it, especially those from ‘closed’ nations. Christianity is distinct among other world religions in that it emphasises God as Father. God, forgive us that we, the human race, have allowed such an evil trade to grow so strong in Your world. Deliver all those who have been taken captive for the pleasure and convenience of others. People usually end up being trafficked as an escape from poverty, either for themselves or their families. Pray that children living in poverty will be protected from the lure of the traffickers. Pray that the family of God will reach out to meet their needs so they don’t look elsewhere. Pray for your own local community, that the commercial sex trade will completely close down, so that there is no longer any market for trafficked victims. Pray for our national Government, that it will make just and compassionate decisions which make trafficking more and more difficult in this country. Lord, may my street be a place where no lies or false allegations take hold; a place free from envy and jealousy, where people respect the property and privacy of others. Lord, may every street in the UK be marked by a culture of sharing time, possessions and respect. This week, UCB will send out copies of Prayer for Today and The Word for Today. Pray that those who read these booklets will be inspired in their walk with God. Pray for stamina and fun for those doing the practical work involved in sending out thousands of envelopes. Our sinful nature often shouts loudest during our prayer times. Don’t waste time on a conversation with it. Just feed your new-creation nature instead. A battle against loneliness in our neighbourhoods, against hatred, antisocial behaviour and community breakdown. A battle against spiritual blindness, fighting for the victory of seeing our streets transformed. We are aiming to recruit 2012 churches to join us in the first wave of this battle, armed with prayers for neighbours and love, and a gift of blessing! Our weapons of ‘prayer guides’ and ‘neighbour challenges’ have been carefully crafted and many new resources can be found on our website. We have worked hard to provide a ‘menu of ideas’ for churches, recognising that every neighbourhood and community is different. We welcome feedback. In 2012 through to 2022, we are aiming see every street in the UK covered in Christian prayer. Let’s hope for thousands of miracles, as people pray for their neighbours and show the love of Jesus. Miracles of elderly people no longer feeling lonely; single mums and asylum seekers feeling part of a supportive community; depression and anxiety rates falling; antisocial behaviour decreasing; people getting to know God. Do you think that's worth praying for once a week? Start a miracle today, register your street or church. At the heart of this 70 day cascade of prayer will be a chain of blessing which will be started off by church leaders in Cornwall who will travel from Lands End to the next evening’s stopping place on the route (Plymouth) bringing prayers of blessing (and handing on a prayer baton) to Christians gathered for prayer there. Leaders in Plymouth will then do the same so that this takes place each day until the torch reaches the Olympic Stadium in London. The aim is to see individuals or groups of Christians stopping to pray wherever they are when the torch passes through their area, e.g. praying outside homes, offices, along streets, in parks and in workplaces. The hope is that church bells will be rung along the route. We want to encourage creative prayer during this time by all ages e.g. prayer driving, prayer vigils, days or weeks of prayer as well as prayer events and services to take place. Our hope is that this cascade of prayer will prepare the way for all the service, mission and hospitality that will take place in hundreds of communities during 2012 and beyond. as funerary games in Mesopotamia and by the time it got to Greece it was highly competitive and the loser was killed in sacrifice to Zeus. The flame of the Olympic Torch relay acknowledges Zeus as God, as it is lit by priestesses on the site of ancient Olympia. The Olympic hymn to Zeus is sung at every opening and closing ceremony. This is why the focus for prayer is for the light of Christ to be seen in our communities and nation in 2012 through the body of Christ working together in unity to share the Good News in word and deed. It is indeed time to ‘Arise, shine, for your light has come’ (Isaiah 60:1). Jane Holloway is the National Prayer Director for World Prayer Centre and leads the More Than Gold Prayer team. Some love it. Others don’t. So why does the environment get its own Sunday? What is the environment? Environment Sunday celebrates two amazing aspects of God’s creation. First, the physical world - the earth, air, oceans, rivers, clouds, sunshine, wind and rain. Second, all the living things. Why should we care? Jesus highlighted two commands that include all the others (1). Love God with everything we have. And love our neighbour as ourselves. Both relate to the environment. Firstly, God ‘owns the earth and all it contains.’ (2) If we love God, obviously we should care for what He made, sustains and loves. What’s more He actually told Adam to care (3) for creation. Secondly, people, particularly the poor, depend on the environment for life’s essentials, including food. If we love our neighbours, obviously we shouldn’t damage their life support. So caring for the environment is a high priority for normal Christian living, but sometimes we forget. Environment Sunday is an annual reminder. What to do? 1. Celebrate Environment Sunday in your church as a reminder to ourselves and a witness to others. A Rocha UK produce great resources (http://www.arocha.org/ gb-en/resources/) 2. And, of course, pray continually. Climate Prayer is a good starting place. (http://climateprayer.net) 5 June is World Environment Day. We read stories every day This year the World Weekend of Prayer, about children who are suffering, abused, facilitated by international children’s hungry and afraid. And Jesus tells us that, charity Viva, is going back to basics, in this world, there will be no end to this exploring why and how we should pray for suffering (Matthew 26:11). So what is the children at risk. And you can get involved! point? It can be really hard to pray for children we have never met, in situations we don’t understand, especially if we will never see the results of our prayers. What should we ask God to provide for them, when we don’t know what they need? Well, Jesus actually offers us an answer to these questions, in the form of the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4). This prayer is a guideline for how we can pray not only for ourselves, but for others, including children at risk. It 48 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday The World Weekend of Prayer is an opportunity for churches, prayer groups, and individuals to gather together to pray for children at risk. The event has taken place over the first weekend of June for the past 16 years and sees hundreds of thousands of Christians coming together at venues around the world to pray with and for children. But you don’t have to wait until June! Here is a simple activity to get you thinking about how and why we can pray for children at risk… Write out the Lord’s Prayer on a large piece of paper. Think about how each verse could relate to children at risk. For example, the first verse is ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy’ – this could stir us to ask God to give children the strength to praise him, even in really tough situations. Write or draw all your ideas around the verses, like a mind map. If you have children, you could ask them to help you think of ideas and decorate the poster. ‘And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’ John 14:13-14 (NIV) If you would like to get involved in the 2012 World Weekend of Prayer, download a prayer guide (or order hard copies) from www.viva.org/wwp, where you will find plenty of creative prayer ideas for groups or individuals, young and old, as well as stories from Viva’s networks, and lots of other food for thought. An international Christian charity, Viva is helping people work together to keep children at risk safe and healthy, giving them opportunities to learn and empowering them to play an active part in shaping their own futures. To find out more about Viva and the World Weekend of Prayer visit www.viva.org Every year we hear amazing stories about children coming to faith and being healed, and church communities being released to make a real, practical difference in their lives. Prayer works – so add your voice! So why do we pray? CHURCH ON THE STREET GAMES PASTORS BY WENDY THOMAS, NATIONAL PRAYER COORDINATOR, STREET PASTORS Matthew 5:14-16 tells us that we are all called to let God’s light shine through us and show other people the way to God through Jesus. For some people the only time they will know what God is like is by the way we live our lives. Street Pastors are obvious to the world through being out on the streets every weekend and showing God’s love to the people they meet both in words and deeds. With the 2012 Olympics coming up, the Olympic torch is an image we carry in our mind. Are we a torch for God, shining His light in the world? Many Street Pastors will be volunteering as Games Pastors during the Olympics and will be showing God’s love to those visiting the Games. So far we have over 150 volunteers from among the Street Pastors but it is hoped this number will increase to 500. Street Pastors is in the middle of a ‘Year of Prayer for our Streets’ and prayer helps us to show God’s love to the world. It’s always so encouraging to know someone is praying for you. Please join with us. Would you like to pray on a regular basis for Street Pastors or your street? Street Pastors use ‘Adopt a Street’ as a way to pray for your street and also recommends Neighbourhood Prayer Network www.neighbourhoodprayer.net as a way of praying for your community. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM... LL WHO CAN YOU CA UCB Prayerline is a confidential service where anyone can call a local-rate number for prayer every day of the week. The phone lines are operated by a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers spread throughout the UK from Arbroath in the north to Plymouth in the south, including five groups in Northern Ireland. These groups, or satellites as they are known, operate out of church buildings in groups of between 4 and 23 volunteers on a rota basis, so that as much of the day as possible is covered. From small beginnings, Prayerline now has 27 satellites and receives over 110,000 calls a year with prayer requests on every subject from addiction to fear, from salvation to those on the verge of suicide. To assist the volunteers there are a number of staff at UCB who train, guide and coordinate the satellites in every aspect of the work. Each of the 360 plus volunteers goes through a full training procedure to ensure they know how to deal with every type of prayer request, no matter how difficult or distressing. Over the years we have seen many people come to Christ through Prayerline, thanks to the caring compassionate work of the volunteers. We receive letters every day thanking Prayerline for simply being there when no one else is. Prayerline also operates on Facebook and via the UCB website as an email request, taking prayer into the 21st century. 'God answers prayer so fast and so amazingly - I praise Him for His willingness to hear our heart cries, and I thank you again for being there and standing in the gap with your amazing prayerline. THANK YOU!!!' Deborah ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday 53 testimony New India: Are The Rich Getting Richer And The Poor Staying Poor? BY SIMON HAWTHORNE I received an e-mail recently that states that, according to starvation.net 1.5billion people are overweight and 500 million are obese. This is at a time when 35,000 children each day die of starvation, 85% of them under the age of five. These statistics graphically emphasise the massive inequality between rich and poor. At a time when a quarter of the world eats to excess - 1.2 billion go hungry and live below the poverty line. For 20 years, I have been working in India amongst the Dalit community which epitomises the rich/poor divide and is largely brought about by India’s caste system. It is easy to visit the major cities of India with its modern airports, fine hotels and excellent restaurants and feel that caste is a thing of the past. But 80% of the population live in rural India where caste discrimination is very much a reality today. Many people are beginning to question why the UK currently sends £295 million of aid per year to India when they have a space programme and nuclear weapons and are tipped to be a future Super Power. But it remains the case that 1 in 3 of the world’s poor live in India and it has more cases of malnutrition than the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. There are 50 million child labourers in India, of which 15 million are in bonded labour, a form of modern-day slavery. Poverty has forced parents to sell their children, usually 54 ucb.co.uk/prayerfortoday girls, who are most vulnerable due to their low status in Indian society. 1.2 million, almost 10% of those in bonded labour have been sold on, trafficked into the sex trade. In Mumbai, there are now more millionaires than in London. Yet of the city’s population of 17 million, 7 million live in slums and 5 million don’t even have a toilet and instead make use of open sewers or the streets. Quite simply, the booming wealth of India is limited to a few who were born with the benefit of high caste status. Very little of India’s new found wealth trickles down to the low caste or those who are born outside the caste system. They are known as untouchables, but who prefer to be called Dalits, meaning downtrodden or oppressed. Life Association is a charity that builds schools and children’s homes for orphaned Dalit children. The children in their care receive an education, health care, clothes and a loving Christian home. 85% go on to further education as they break free from the bonds of caste oppression. The cost of all this is a very modest 70p a day. To raise awareness of the plight of the Dalits we have launched a range of beautiful hand-crafted clay pot candles that are made by Dalit potters in the Daharvi slum in Mumbai. All profits go to support our work amongst orphaned children in India. To see our range visit www.dalit.co.uk Please commit to pray for those caught in poverty and slavery in India, or why not visit our projects in India. We run trips in March and November, in partnership with SoapBox trust, which are often life-changing experiences.
