2014 UAlbany Volleyball Media Guide 2013 Year in Review Coming off an America East title match defeat last season, UAlbany had a very young squad with eight freshmen and two juniors to compete in 2013. The Great Danes looked to defend their streak of six-straight regular season America East titles and go for their fourth conference championship. The Great Danes played four tough non-conference invitationals, playing a number of nationally ranked teams including UCLA, North Carolina and Penn State. At times playing a full starting lineup of freshmen, the team had a rough road up to conference play, but that experience helped get the Great Danes ready for league competition. On September 29th, a healthier UAlbany squad began America East play, shutting out reigning-league champion Binghamton at the University Gym. After a win against Hartford, defeats to Providence and UMBC put the Great Danes at 2-2. UAlbany surged forward and took three-straight, defeating then first-place New Hampshire to claim the top spot in the America East. UAlbany went 4-3 the rest of the way in America East play, including a shutout road win over Stony Brook, securing a tie for second place in the league after a three-set victory at UMass Lowell to earn a 9-5 conference record. The road to the title would end after the next match, after UAlbany fell to UMBC in three sets in the America East Tournament in Durham, New Hampshire. UAlbany finished its season at 9-19 overall, earning its 12th-consecutive appearance in the America East Tournament. Viktoriia Stroilo earned America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, the sixth-year in a row UAlbany has won the honor, after leading the league with 4.96 digs per game. Amanda Dolan was honored as America East Rookie of the Year, hitting .268 with 189 kills and 91 total blocks. Samantha Brostrom was America East All-Conference First Team after getting 185 kills and 222 digs, with Stroilo and Dolan each earning All-Conference Second Team. Dolan was joined by Mikala McCauley, a setter who tallied 636 assists, 20 aces and 247 digs, on the America East All-Rookie Team.

The University sponsors 19 varsity sports for men and women. Club sports, an intramural program, and recreational opportunities are also offered. A member of the America East Conference since 2001, 17 of the school’s 19 varsity teams are eligible for conference championships and NCAA post-season competition. Women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, enters its first year as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013 after competing in the Northeast Conference for the past 14 seasons. UAlbany has won 66 conference championships and produced 27 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I in 1999. Celebrating the school’s most successful year in Division I history in 2012-13, UAlbany won a record nine conference championships, while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Great Danes also won the America East Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in school history, as field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, and men’s lacrosse captured conference titles. Football also won its sixth NEC championship and had two players sign NFL Free Agent contracts. The Great Danes won eight championships in the 2010-11 academic year, including field hockey, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, softball and all four track & field titles. The lacrosse program, among the top 10 in both national polls, won its first-ever league crown and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Volleyball, field hockey and softball also made the NCAA field. In 2006-07, the Great Danes had a breakout year as a Division I program with conference championships in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s indoor track, women’s volleyball and baseball. In the spring of 2007, men’s lacrosse and softball became the first UAlbany teams at the Division I level to record victories in NCAA postseason competition. In 2005-06, men’s basketball produced one of the most significant achievements in the school’s intercollegiate history with its first-ever NCAA Division I berth. UAlbany won the first of two consecutive league titles. The program’s storied turnaround resulted in a strong NCAA showing against No. 2 Connecticut. UAlbany was awarded the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup, which annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East. In 2008, football won its fourth Northeast Conference championship and the Gridiron Classic. UAlbany has an athletic history that dates back to the late 1890s when the first known intercollegiate teams arrived on campus. UAlbany competed at the college division level prior to the NCAA’s restructuring in 1972. The athletic program moved from Division III to Division II in 1995-96. The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three

basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004. In addition, SEFCU Arena contains a fitness center; four racquetball/ handball courts and four squash courts; athletic training and rehabilitation facilities with three whirlpool baths, a musculoskeletal evaluation device and other therapeutic machines. Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio. SEFCU Arena and Physical Education Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership. Additionally, UAlbany’s air-supported structure, fitted with a brandnew covering with minor interior renovations in the spring of 2003, is located to the east of the Physical Education Building, and may be utilized for tennis, basketball, and indoor football practice. The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 2012-13’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-theart 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue. There are also 12 lighted tennis courts and numerous fields for football, soccer, softball, baseball, lacrosse, field hockey, and other events. The practice fields on the Western Avenue side of campus were renovated in 2012 with 263,000 square feet of two-inch-thick athletic sod and the irrigation system was refurbished. UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two allweather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.

2014 UAlbany Volleyball Media Guide A Quick Reference for NCAA Rules and Regulations Concerning Representatives of Athletics Interests (Boosters), Fans and Alumni Relative to Recruiting Q: My son is a current student at UAlbany. I own a suite at the football stadium and often give my son five tickets to invite his friends to watch the game with us. He is friends with one of the UAlbany student-athletes. Is it okay for the UAlbany student-athlete to join us in the suite during the games? A: No. Allowing the student-athlete to attend the suite at anytime during a competition is considered an extra benefit as this constitutes preferential seating to an athletic contest. Since suite seating is not available to the general student body this would be a special arrangement provided by a booster and would result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible. As a result, the student-athlete would be required to pay back the cost of the benefit received (e.g. if the cost of the ticket is $500 the student-athlete would have to pay that amount to a charity of choice). Dependent upon the value of the benefit received, the student-athlete would be required to sit out of the prescribed number of competition(s). The student-athlete’s eligibility would not be reinstated until repayment was made and the game suspension fulfilled. Even though the student-athlete may be friends with your son or daughter, the NCAA student-athlete status supersedes friendship in regard to the NCAA legislation. UAlbany may provide its student athletes with admission to all regular season home contests in sports other than which the student-athlete participates however the following criteria must be met: • Admission is provided via a pass list • Proof of identity is provided. • Seating is only located in the general seating area of the facility. Q: Can a booster contact high school coaches or guidance counselors directly regarding a prospective student-athlete? A: No. This contact would constitute recruiting. Q: If only UAlbany coaches, athletic department, and/or institutional staff members may recruit a prospect how may a booster help? A: A booster may: • Attend as many athletic contests as you desire to evaluate talent, provided you are not making contact with the prospect or any individual associated with the prospective student-athlete to encourage the prospect’s attendance at UAlbany • Call, write, or send newspaper articles to the UAlbany coaching staff regarding outstanding student-athletes in his/her area • Feel free to offer assistance such as lodging or meals to members of the coaching staff who are recruiting in his/her community Q: As a booster, if I attend a prospect’s athletic event, may I talk to the prospect’s coach after the event? A: No. A booster may not contact the coach, the prospect or family members, the principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate a prospect. Q: What if a booster attends an athletic event and finds himself/herself sitting next to the parents of the prospect? A: Do not initiate conversation with the relatives. If conversation is initiated with the booster, respond in a civil manner but do not discuss the UAlbany Athletics Program with them. If they ask questions about the program, remind them that the NCAA prohibits a booster from discussing the program with them. Encourage the family to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department directly. Q: As a booster may I visit the prospect’s school to pick up transcripts or videotape/film to send to a college coach? A: No. A booster may not visit the prospect’s school to pick up transcripts or

videotapes/film pertaining to the evaluation of the prospect’s academic or athletic ability. Q: May a prospect call a booster? A: Yes. A booster may have a telephone conversation with a prospect only if the prospect initiates the call. The telephone call may not be prearranged by an institutional staff member, and the booster is not permitted to have a recruiting conversation with the prospect but may exhibit normal civility. The booster must refer any questions about the institution’s athletics program to the athletics department staff. Q: May boosters entertain relatives and friends of a prospective student-athlete at any site off- campus? A: No. Q: May a booster make a contact with a prospect and/or his or her guardian during an official or unofficial visit to campus? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to pay costs incurred by an athletics talent scout in studying or recruiting a prospect? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to provide free admission to UAlbany’s away contests to prospects, their relatives, or friends? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to pay in whole or in part the registration fees for summer sports camps? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to be involved in the on-campus entertainment of a prospect and/or his or her guardian during an official or unofficial visit? A: No. Q: During the recruitment of a prospect or prior to a prospect’s enrollment, may a booster be involved directly or indirectly in making arrangements for a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or friends to receive money, financial aid or equivalent inducements regardless if similar financial aid, benefits or arrangements are available to prospective students in general, their relatives or friends? A: No. Other types of inducements that are prohibited include, but are not limited to: • The use of an automobile; • Signing or cosigning a note for a loan; • Special discounts or payment arrangements on loan; • Cash or tangible items (e.g., clothes, cars, jewelry, stereo equipment , even a soft drink); • The promise of employment after college; • An employment arrangement for a prospect’s relatives or friend; • Purchase of items or services from a prospect or the prospect’s family at inflated prices; • Free or reduced -cost housing arrangements; • Free or reduced-cost services or rentals of any type; • The promise of financial aid for post graduate education; • The promise to pay or arrange payment of transportation costs incurred by relatives or friends of prospective student-athletes; • The use of UAlbany’s athletic equipment (e.g., for a high school all-star game); or • Sponsorship of or arrangement for an awards banquet for high school , prep school or two year college athletes by an institution, boosters, or its alumni groups or booster clubs.
