Traffic officers conduct citywide scholar transport blitz The traffic situation around schools often leads to much frustration for drivers especially when inconsiderate parents choose to break the law. It is for this reason that City of Cape Town traffic officers conducted a scholar transport blitz last week in an effort to ensure that learners arrive at school safely. Special emphasis was placed on scholar transport vehicles which transport learners to schools and

creches across the city, during the operation on Thursday morning. Officers also concentrated on parents who, while dropping their children off at schools, cause major traffic congestion through their general disregard for traffic laws. During the operation in Table View a total of 62 offences were recorded. Six motorists were arrested for not having the necessary permits and their vehicles were impounded

– one driver was only 19 years old, had no professional driving permit, no valid driving licence and was operating an unlicensed vehicle on a public road. One suspect was arrested for driving with a false licence token and number plates, while another was arrested on six warrants of arrest valued at R5 000. While four of the city’s marked patrol vehicles were outside Table View Primary School and the offic-

ers were conducting enforcement operations, a motorist drove on the wrong side of the road while a young girl was crossing the pedestrian crossing. The motorist then parked in the bay facing oncoming traffic to drop off her passenger – another school-going child. The motorist – who only had a learner’s licence – was charged, along with her grandmother, who allowed her to drive. A further 318 traffic fines also were issued in Bottelary Road,

Kraaifontein (61), Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River (56), Musica Lane, Macassar (37), Thlati Street, Helderberg (76) and Spine Road and Mew Way, Khayelitsha (88). Drivers who transport school learners for reward must be in possession of a valid driving licence, a professional driving permit, and an operating licence. All scholar transport operators have to comply with the provisions of the National Transportation Act.
