On Saturday night, crowds of people will be dancing in the streets of Brooklet after enjoying the day at the 25th annual Brooklet Peanut Festival. The festival, organized each year by members of the Brooklet Community Development Association, will be held this Saturday, Aug. 16, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. in downtown Brooklet. To kick off the event, people will be up and running at 7 a.m. as the 5K Peanut Run/Walk gets underway. Then, at 10 a.m., a parade through downtown Brooklet will showcase dozens of entries to be televised on Savannah's Channel 11. The festival traditionally draws a large crowd, with visitors from all over the state. There will be plenty of food vendors offering delicious snacks like donuts, barbecue, pancakes, ice cream and lemonade, blooming

onions, kettle corn, funnel cakes and, of course, peanuts of every imaginable kind — boiled, roasted, Cajun flavored, fried and baked into treats. A variety of crafts vendors also will be there to present all sorts of items for sale, such as live plants; homemade sauces, dips and soup mixes; handmade purses and accessories; clothing; jewelry and more. Free live entertainment from dance groups, bands, soloists and choirs will be offered all day long, beginning at 11:30 a.m., following the conclusion of the parade. Most performances will be held at the main festival site. Wrapping up this year’s festival, the street dance will take place from 7–10:30 p.m. and will feature the Variations. For more information on this year’s festival, visit www.brookletpeanutfestival.com.w

Clear your calendars

Alex Brown breaks down the Eagles' upcoming game schedule

With only two weeks left until game week, let’s run a quick overview of Georgia Southern’s upcoming football season. Over the next two weeks, we’ll discuss each opponent. I may even throw out a prediction or two before it’s all said and done.

Aug. 30 @ North Carolina State

Raleigh, North Carolina – 12:30 p.m.

The Wolfpack is looking to bounce back from a rough 3–9 season a year ago. They lost their final eight games of the season and were winless in ACC play. Some may think NC State is ripe for the picking for Georgia Southern after the win over Florida, but this is a strong program with no shortage of talent. Second-year head coach Dave Doeren has won everywhere he has coached, so I wouldn’t anticipate another bad season for the Pack. Georgia Southern also has a ton of questions to answer with a new coaching staff, new offensive system and plenty of talent to replace from last year’s squad. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it sure won’t be easy.

Sept. 6 vs. Savannah State

Paulson Stadium – 6:00 p.m.

The first Georgia Southern home game in the newly expanded Paulson

Alex Brown

Stadium will be against familiar opponent Savannah State. The Tigers will open their season at Middle Tennessee State before meeting the Eagles in

Statesboro. Savannah State is coming off a 1–11 season and lost last year’s season opener to Georgia Southern 77-9. The Tigers’ lone win came against Fort Valley State 27-20. I’ll go out on a limb and predict a Georgia Southern win in this one.

Sept. 13 @ Georgia Tech

Atlanta – 12:00 p.m.

This is a game Eagle fans have been waiting for. Southern has played Georgia several times over the years, but Tech has never scheduled the Eagles. Of course, many Eagle fans fondly remember the Paul Johnson era, which brought two national championships to Statesboro in his five seasons as head coach. Now he’s going to be on the opposite sideline. Last season, the Yellow Jackets finished 7–6 and were very inconsistent. They had blowout wins and blowout losses. They started the season winning three straight, then lost three in a row, then won three straight again. They lost three of their last four, including a Music City Bowl matchup against Ole Miss. This game should be very interesting, given all the ties between Southern and Tech, and I certainly don’t want to make any predictions

until I see these two teams play a few games. Tech opens against Wofford and travels to Tulane before hosting the Eagles.

Sept. 20 @ South Alabama

Mobile, Alabama – Time TBA

Thursday night showdown at Our House. I’m not sure I need to write much else about this one. But I will. The Mountaineers will be hungry. They had a bad 2013 season with a 4–8 final record. Much like Georgia Southern, they knew they had no postseason or championships to play for — so motivation may have been an issue. But they smoked the Eagles 38-17. Motivation shouldn’t be a problem this season. And this game will be huge.

Oct. 4 @ New Mexico State

Las Cruces, New Mexico – 8:00 p.m. Georgia Southern’s first Sun Belt game will be at South Alabama, another relative newcomer to the conference and FBS. USA joined the FBS in 2011, but have done pretty well considering they did not have a program at all until 2009. Last season, the Jaguars finished 6–6 but won their last three games in blowout fashion. If they can build off that success, they may be a sleeper to make some noise in the Sun Belt. South Alabama opens its season at Kent State and then hosts SEC member Mississippi State the week before Southern comes to town.

Sept. 25 vs. Appalachian State Paulson Stadium – 7:30 p.m.

Our old friend App State comes to town for a nationally televised

Georgia Southern makes the long trip to New Mexico the first weekend of October. The Aggies are coming off a 2–10 campaign in 2013 and are fellow first-year members of the Sun Belt — kind of. New Mexico State played in the Sun Belt from 2001–2004 before leaving for the Western Athletic Conference. Now that the WAC no longer sponsors football, New Mexico State has joined the Sun Belt as a football-only member. The Eagles may catch a bit of a scheduling break as the Aggies have to travel to LSU the week before Southern comes to town. The Eagles will have a long week to prepare after the Thursday night game against App. Next week we will break down the second half of the season. Kickoff is getting closer, folks.w

Brittani Howell Okay, not really. As we all know, actually interviewing Elvis would be impossible for obvious reasons. But we've got the next best thing: an interview with Statesboro's very own resident Elvis, Russ Lanier. Lanier will be appearing at the Averitt Center this weekend in a two-hour show featuring hits from the King's 1970–1971 concert tour, with a live eight-member band to accompany the King's lyrics delivered in Lanier's uncannily similar voice. The proceeds of the event will go to benefit the Averitt Center for the Arts, of which Lanier has been a longtime and dedicated supporter. Ever humble and respectful of his source material, Lanier hesitates to call himself an Elvis impersonator or tribute artist. As he said as a caveat to his interview, "There will only ever be one Elvis," but he tries to bring an authentic mix of Elvis and himself to the audience. However, he did graciously agree to give an interview to Connect Statesboro — while in character. And so, without further ado, we would like to present the man who truly needs no introduction: the King, the legend, Mr. Elvis Presley. Connect Statesboro: Thanks for

sitting down with us, Mr. Presley. So, this show features songs from your 1970–1971 concert tour. What made you want to revisit this particular point of your musical career? Elvis Presley: Honestly, this was a time when I was able to recapture the sense of rebellion that made my music so powerful in the 1950s. I had just completed 10 years of movie contracts that left my fans wondering what the heck I was thinking. After the TV special aired in December of 1968, I realized that I still had a great audience base out there, so I decided to give the fans what they deserved — musically. CS: What songs will you be performing? EP: We have worked up a nice mix of hard-rockin’ stuff from the early days along with some new versions of "Suspicious Minds" and "Love Me Tender." We also have favorites, such as “An American Trilogy” and “My Way.” One of my favorite segments of our new show features some Southern gospel. CS: Who will be playing with you? EP: “DTB … the Dream Team Band, LLC” is a streamlined version of our huge Vegas show band. Band members include Casey Dunham on vocals, who also opens our show; Mandy Fowler on vocals, Jackie Skinner on lead guitar, Mike Crews

A lot of folks never get the opportunity to travel and see a big show, so we thought it would be nice to bring the big show to the folks. CS: What happens after this show? Do you head back to Graceland, or do you have any more shows coming up? EP: We will also be at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Aug. 29. After that, I will be taking some time off for some fun in the sun! CS: You've been out of the spotlight for several decades now. James, a familiar face in the Boro's music scene, released his first EP at a release party at Locos on Friday, Aug. 8.

Vince Garrett

'Cowboy Casanova' releases first EP Statesboro native Coty James may be working on a new sound for country music, but he’s got his roots in classic country. He has various family members who have been in and out of Nashville, the epicenter of country music. One of those family members is Gerald Smith, known as the “Georgia Quacker.” Smith has written country songs for decades and had a stint on the classic country base “Heehaw.” Still, Coty doesn’t let it go to his head. He’s been a spectator of the music business long enough to know better. He spent this past weekend putting the final touches on a party for the release of his official EP, Cowboy Casanova.

The six-song EP is very diverse and shows the range of James' ability in his music. There is music inspired by Jason Aldean, Garth Brooks and others to appeal to every part of the country music fan base. He played his first show at Retriever’s and slowly worked his way up to becoming a regular bar staple around the Boro. He performed covers until he met a girl who inspired him to write his first song. That song became his recent single, "Cowboy Casanova." The content of the song has a new generation appeal, but the sound of the song is classic. You can hear the influence of his two inspirations, Luke Bryan and Chris Young. Since

SPECIAL TO CONNECT he began to write music, he has been slowly on the rise. He was even a contestant on the hit NBC show The Voice. He gives his family a lot of credit for his progression. It is not only their connections that have

gotten him this far, but their expectations of him. “They let me know that I still have a long way to go and that I have to pay my dues," James said. "That’s why I’m still working hard right now.”w

SPECIAL TO CONNECT and compliment the game well. I found the controls easy to master but the targeting system was a bit simplistic, allowing you to cycle between enemies or targets at the click of a button. However, the game falls short on a few things. I would have liked the story to be deeper and give me a stronger tie to the characters and main protagonist. Also, the missions get kind of repetitive after a few hours of playtime.

Although simple and repetitive, this rapid space simulator can give a welcomed change of pace from a gaming era filled with first-person shooters. Transforming into a huge mech in game to destroy multiple enemies will give players a huge feeling of satisfaction. Strike Suit Zero delivers a fun experience that blends simulation and arcade game play into an enjoyable space flight combat.w

Feed the Boro to host benefit golf scramble Local charity Feed the Boro is forging ahead with its first-ever benefit golf tournament. The J.C. Lewis Ford Feed the Boro Golf Scramble, presented by McDonald's, will be held Aug. 29 at Forest Heights Country Club. Feed the Boro is a local charity dedicated to delivering Thanksgiving meals to the less fortunate in the Bulloch county area. They serve organizations like the Bulloch County Family and Children Services, Safe Haven and Pinewood Mental Health, and public service personnel such as the Statesboro Fire Department and the county sheriff’s office. Many of the meals are obtained from forms sent home with the children at local schools. No one who approaches Feed the Boro is turned down for a Thanksgiving meal. Recently, the organization came under the umbrella of the Statesboro food bank, Food Bank Inc. The organization has been serving families in Bulloch County for over

20 years, but this is the first time it has held a golf scramble as its primary fund-raising event. “We decided to do a fundraiser earlier in the year so we could reserve our time and energy on the actual planning closer to Thanksgiving,” said program director Robin Aspinwall. “We enjoy playing the game and thought it would be an enjoyable way to raise funding.” Several teams have already signed up to participate in the scramble, including Cannon Deloach, owner of the local Firehouse Subs, who will be competing with a team of four. “Whenever we have a chance to help somebody raise money, I always try to do that,” Deloach said. “It’s a fun way to do it. It’s a lot better than somebody coming up and asking, ‘Hey, can you donate?’ You get something out of it.” Competitors will be getting quite a bit out of this tournament. The cost of entry alone covers 18 holes of golf,

Robin Williams, comedy star, dead at 63 The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — Robin Williams, the Academy Award winner and comic supernova whose explosions of pop culture riffs and impressions dazzled audiences for decades and made him a gleamy-eyed Robin laureate for the Information Age, died Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63. Williams was pronounced dead

at his home in California on Monday, according to the sheriff's office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff's office said a preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a Williams suicide due to asphyxia. "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I

SPECIAL TO CONNECT lunch and a cart to ride in for the day. Thanks to Dixon Golf, who joined the list of sponsors last week, competitors will also receive a dozen golf balls, a Dixon Golf hat and a 50 percent discount on all Dixon Golf merchandise for an entire year. Dixon Golf and other sponsors will be donating plenty of other prizes for the winners of various challenges, including cash prizes for the winners, airplane tickets and a trip to Las Vegas. As a courtesy, drinks for golfers will be provided by local venue El Jalapeno. Of course, the main incentive for competitors is the chance to contribute to a good cause and provide meals throughout the Boro on Thanksgiving.

“Our goal is to shut the golf course down,” Aspinwall said. “And that takes 22 teams.” Those interested in competing still have time to sign up for the event, which will take place on Aug. 29. In order to sign up, call or call Walt Garvin at (912) 764-9817 or Robin Aspinwall at (912) 596-9542 and visit https://bit.ly/feedborogolf for more information. For those who don’t play golf or cannot make the event, but still wish to contribute to Feed the Boro, T-shirts with the organization’s logo can be purchased at http://teespring. com/feedtheboro. am utterly heartbroken," said Williams' wife, Susan Schneider. "On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions," Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV show Mork and Mindy, through his standup act and such films as Good Morning, Vietnam, the short, barrel-chested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement. Loud, fast, manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs. He was a riot in drag in Mrs. Doubtfire, or as a cartoon genie in

Aladdin. He won his Academy Award in a rare, but equally intense dramatic role, as a teacher in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He was no less on fire in interviews. During a 1989 chat with The Associated Press, he could barely stay seated in his hotel room, or even mention the film he was supposed to promote, as he free-associated about comedy and the cosmos. "There's an Ice Age coming," he said. "But the good news is there'll be daiquiris for everyone and the Ice Capades will be everywhere. The lobster will keep for at least 100 years, that's the good news. The Swanson dinners will last a whole millennium. The bad news is the house will basically be in Arkansas." Williams also won three Golden Globes, for Good Morning, Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire and The Fisher King. His other film credits included Robert Altman's See Williams, page 19

'Turtles' is just as awful as you expected There have been many iterations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles since they were created in the '80s, all of which are Saturday morning cartoons. There was much controversy when Michael Bay, who produced the film, revealed that he would be proceeding with the movie. Most people were leery after the Transformers films and rumors about changing the Turtles’ origin story. This film was directed by Jonathan Liebesman, who is more known for Battle: Los Angeles, and the sequel Wrath of the Titans. Both were reviewed negatively by critics. This movie just may be added to that pile. This rendition of the Ninja Turtles is a little darker than previously known Turtles, which fits in that “make it applicable to the real world” theme that most modern superhero movies have. It revolves around ambitious reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox), who is investigating a recent crime spree against the advice of the television network she reports for. She’s investigating when she happens upon a mysterious group bent on repelling

the efforts of the criminal organization known as the “Foot Clan.” In her search to figure out who these mysterious guys are, the vigilantes find her and lead us on a race against time to stop the plans of Shredder. To begin with the many things that are wrong with this film, the story changes the familiar origin story that many people know for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The story takes a Frankenstein turn. To stay away from spoilers, the Turtles aren’t aliens, but the story does no justice to the way they were created. In this film, April’s discovery of the Turtles is disrespectful to the franchise in general. Next, there were characterization flaws in the movie, and none worse than that of Megan Fox as O’Neil. They took a strong and smart character and made her into a bombshell who gets in the way more than she contributes. Her dead eyes and emotionless face during her line delivery are almost as hard to sell as her simple-life, bike-riding persona. Third, the design of these Turtles takes liberty with stereo-

The Associated Press Megan Fox plays April O'Neil, an ambitious journalist and the Turtles' closest human ally — or at least, that's who she's supposed to be. In this update, she's more vapid than clever and constantly gets in the way. So much for strong female characters! types we've tried to break out of for years. Michelangelo is dressed as a puka-shell-wearing surfer dude and Donatello lurks the streets with “ninja stealth” carrying a giant computer on his back. He wears the cliché nerd glasses with the obligatory tape every costume shop would sell. Splinter looks like someone skinned Chuck E. Cheese, and Shredder’s design obviously came from what was left from shooting Transformers: Age of Extinction. All in all, if you are a diehard Turtles fan, this film will disappoint. If you are a casual viewer, certain scenes will make you chuckle — especially those involving Michelangelo — but that does not

save this film. The dialogue is campy, the effects just barely cut it and the story is mediocre. There is one scene involving a chase on a snowy mountain that will entertain, but there is not much else that will make you tense up in your seat. This one may have set the Turtles back a few years. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the next rendition. There are some who will try to explain away the quality of this movie with the “it’s giant talking Turtles” argument. With the recent trend of comic book films, there is no reason why this film shouldn’t be judged on the same scale. Two stars. If you really want to see it, don’t pay theater price. Wait for RedBox.w

The four TMNTs have always been defined by one caricatured, overblown trait, but the stereotypes the writers used for this film made for insultingly simple characterizations.

Popeye (a box office bomb), Steven Spielberg's Hook and Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. On stage, Williams joined fellow comedian Steve Martin in a 1988 Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot. "I dread the word 'art,'" Williams told the AP in 1989. "That's what we used to do every night before we'd go on with Waiting for Godot. We'd go, 'No art. Art dies tonight.' We'd try to give it a life, instead of making Godot so serious. It's cosmic vaudeville staged by the Marquis de Sade." Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams would remember himself as a shy kid who got some early laughs from his mother — by mimicking his grandmother. He opened up more in high school when he joined the drama club and he was accepted into the Juilliard Academy, where he had several classes in which he and Christopher Reeve were the only students and John Houseman was the teacher. Encouraged by Houseman to pursue comedy, Williams identified with the wildest and angriest of performers: Jonathan Winters, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin. Their acts were not warm and lovable. They were just being themselves. "You look at the world and see how scary it can be sometimes and still try to deal with the fear," he told the AP in 1989.
